No Entry Sign on booting
Ok so i have a old eMac, and its not booting.
Its just sits with the apple logo on start up, makes the chime but does not move.
I held the option key, and got the option to boot of the mac HD.
But as soon as i click on it, the apple logo dissapears, and then there is a no entry sign.
I have tried to rebuild this machine, and its starts to load off the disk, but then the no entry sign pops back.
Please can someone help, its driving me crazy
Hi celeben,
I asked " Have you tried to repair the disk?" an you said you had, " I have tried both, but to no avail "
But by the sound of it maybe you haven't.
In Applications/Utilities open the Disk Utility. Selecting the hard drive, there will be displayed S.M.A.R.T. status for your drive. it should say verified.
From that same application, you can do Repair permissions and Verify disk.
If the disk needs repairing then these are the instructions.
The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive. Simply loading the install disk is not sufficient. You have to boot from the install disk.
To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart, then hold down the C key until you hear the chime.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to First Aid or Disk Utilities, depending on the system and navigate to the Disk Utilities app.
Then you will be able to Repair Disk on the start up drive.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
Then run Repair Permissions.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.

hi
i have all of a sudden started getting a no entry sign on boot up. I have tried repairing the permissions but still no... has anyone else got any suggestions of how to fix this pleaseTry resetting NVRAM/PRAM by holding down cmd-opt-p-r on restart. Keep holding until you hear the startup chime twice.
If it reboots normally, all is good. If it doesn't, you'll probably need to reinstall the OS; however, it could be that your hard drive is dead or dying.
Boot into Recovery HD by holding down cmd-r immediately after the startup tone. Let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD (if you didn't rename it), and go to the Firt Aid Tab. Click Repair Disk. If it finds any errors and repairs them, run repair disk until it comes up clean.
If successful, Try to reboot normally.
If it fails to repair the disk or it doesn't reboot normally, you will need to boot into Recovery again and reinstall the OS. If you don't already have a backup, make one before you reinstall. If you have another Mac, you can boot up in Firewire Target Disk Mode to mount the bad Mac's hard drive on your other Mac. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
You could use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make the clone. You also may be able to just copy your data from the bad Mac to the good Mac or another disk attached to the good Mac. -
Why won't DiskWarrior boot up my mac? (no entry sign when booting from DW)
I get a "no entry" sign (black circle with a diagonal line through it" when I try to boot from the DW dvd. I'm not sure which type of macbook I have but it was bought in January 2007, and before my file system got corrupted my OS was 10.4.11 . I can boot perfectly find from a Data Rescue 3 DVD (and have already used this to backup all my files) and from the OS X install DVD, so why am I getting this error when booting from DiskWarrior? The apple sign appears and the cog spins for a minute or two and then the no entry sign comes up and stays there...
It's DiskWarrior 4.2.is this a disc which was mailed to you or one you burned? sometimes their downloaded "upgrades" are just for install only, you have to contact them for the disc...
if this is suppose to be a genuine boot disc, it could just be a bad burn. the boot DVDs should be apple partition map. -
After 10.8.5 i get a no entry sign on mac mini late 2012
After doing the10.8.5 update from the ap store i get a no entry sign on mac mini late 2012
my macbook pro (2011) went ok and the 3 Mac pro towers i have used have gone ok
a second mac mini did exactly the same from the 10.8.5 combo updater
a save / format and re-install via target disk mode gives me a no entry sign on boot and booting to the recovery partition does the same.Hi everyone I have fixed it !!!!!!
I had gotten to the stage that the screwdrivers were on the desk and i was ready to remove the hard drive from the mini to lowlevel format it on a "PC" not an easy task on a silver mac mini.
But............
I used carbon copy cloner (trial version so free !!!!) as part of the cloning process in 10.8 it asks you to create a recovery partition on the destination drive.
so I booted in target disk mode whacked ccc on my mac pro and when selecting a clone of the 10.8.5 system from the mac Pro it said the recovery partition on the mac mini hard drive was corupt and re-created it !!
As if it was magicly re-born my mac mini is now operating as if nothing had ever been wrong!
Does anyone know if there is an app for repairing the recovery partition? may need it on the other mac that "died" doing the 10.8.5 combo updater. -
The parents G3 has suddenly come up with a "no-entry" sign when booting up !!
Any ideas ?106805-Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts

'No Entry Sign' on Macbook Boot-up with new SSD
Hi Everyone,
I'm a first time poster looking for some help.
I recently installed a new SSD (Samsung 830 128GB 2.5") in my white Macbook (2,1).
After buying the SSD I did a clean install of Mac OS X Mountain Lion, however, due to not having a physical disc, I performed the install using my iMac, the Mountain Lion DMG, and the new SSD in an enclosure. The install seemed to go fine and my iMac will boot up from the SSD with no problems, but when I try to put the SSD in the Macbook, I get a 'No Entry' sign and no sign of life.
I have tried putting the SSD in an enclosure and tried to boot it with the Macbook by holding 'Option' to choose my start-up disk. When I do this, it reads both the 'Macintosh HD' and the 'Recovery HD' but when I click on either option to boot, it shows the 'No Entry' sign. Is there anyone who could suggest anything - any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mr FlollopI have now managed to get Mountain Lion working on my Macbook - even though as Mike has correctly pointed out, it is not in the system requirements.
I believe the problem lay with installing Lion on the SSD via a different machine than the one the SSD was meant for - though this should not have been the case.
I ended up installing the SSD in the Macbook and booting Mountain Lion install from a USB stick - it worked and Mountain Lion is running well on my machine. -
Macbook Pro Does Not Start Up - Stuck at "No Entry" Sign
Hello,
I've been dealing with this hours, so at last I decided to get help from the community.
Let me explain the issue first.
I have checked Software Update, and there was two updates. First one was Java and the other one was EFI Update 2.7. I don't remember the Java update version. After I applied the update, the MBP rebooted itself as it should do; bu the problem occured at that reboot. OSX tried to start up three times, like as it was failing to install the updates after reboot. And at the fourth time, after a few minutes the Apple logo turned into a "No Entry Sign". And it stuck like that. Now, the MBP cannot boot normally, I can only run it on safe mode.
I have reset PRAM.
As far as I read about the issue over the boards, the problem occurs to be an HDD problem. Yet I can run the OSX in safe mode, which bugs me. So I downloaded SMART Utility to check the HDD. It says there is 1 Pending Bad Sector, and 1 Removed Bad Sector.
What do I do now, any solutions you can offer?
This is the log export from SMART Utility if you wish to check it.

If you have a backup, no worries.
If you do not have a backup, you could try to reinstall the operating system and get the disk to a state in which it will at least mount. Then, copy whatever information remains intact to another disk. I would be inclined to replace the drive now, install the failed one in an external enclosure, and attempt to extract whatever information you need from it. -
My iMac won't start up (no entry sign/folder with question mark)
Hello,
I recently updated the mac software through the App Store and it is now unable to start up.
When it starts up it has a white screen and a folder icon with a question mark in it. However, sometimes it has a 'no entry' sign instead.
I've found a few solutions online involving using the installation disk and holding certain buttons and going through safe mode but I'm not sure whether the mac is picking up my wireless keyboard. I've replaced the batteries and tried the wireless keyboard from my other mac but nothing has worked.
Can anyone help?
According to the box it is an iMac 27"/3.06/2x2GB/1TB/4670
And it's running Mountain Lion- I can't be too sure exactly which version because I can't get to the system information.
Thanks
JamesHave you tried booting into the Recovery HD and using Disk Utility to check/repair the drive- restart holding Command + r

Why do I have no entry sign apper when I log in
When I turn my iMac on the log in screen appears, when I select my (or any for that matter) user accounts, I am prompted for password, which is accepted and the system goes through the start up process, rather than starting the apple logo in the middle of the screen turns to a 'No Entry' sign - how do I over come this and what is likely to have caused it?
How do I tell if it is full?
If some basics are there and functioning, you may boot into Safe Mode (see point #1 in the linked doc), or into the Recovery System, from where you could launch the Disk Utility to look at and work on your HDD.
Uhm, just in case: You do have a backup, yes? -
Macbook pro crashing and now no entry sign on start up.
Please help! I have a macbook pro with snow leapord, 2 years and no problems. Since yesterday it has been crashing with sbbod and now I am just getting a no entry sign on start up and getting no further? What do do???
You must back up first, if it's still possible, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data. -
No Entry Sign when trying to netboot new MacMini to Mountain Lion Server
My company just purchased a new MacMini i5 2.5 GHz and I am trying to netboot it to my Mountain Lion Server 10.8.2 but I am getting the No Entry sign when it tries to boot to the server. I tested my other Mac computers that are in my environment and they are able to netboot to the server fine. It just seems to be an issue with this latest Mac Mini.
As part of my troubleshooting, I created a new netrestore image from the new Mac Mini using System Image Utility on the Mountain Lion Server. The server successfully created it and I set it as the new default image in the NetBoot server. After taking these steps, I am still getting a No Entry sign.
I checked the log on the server to see what is happening when it tries to boot and this is what is displays:

I have a lab with several variants of minis up through the last generation. One of those minis is a NetBoot/DeployStudio server. I have it hosting a 10.8.2 NetBoot image, which works for all of the other lab minis but this new one.
I have tried 3 different methods for NetBoot:
Holding the 'N' key at boot
Holding option and seeing my NetBoot disk in the selectable options
Booting into the restore partition and selecting my NetBook disk from the Startup Disk preference pane
All 3 options result in what is described above - the Ghostbusters (minus the ghost) no entry sign. My particular mini then shuts itself down shortly thereafter.
My NetBoot server log looks similar to the above, where my BSD INFORM messages have sysid=Macmini6,2.
I have confirmed that - on the restore partition at least - the shipping OS on the new mini 6,2 is 10.8.1. It's likely a custom edition for this new hardware. It's possible that a component of a 10.8.3 update would fix it, but I'm unfortunately leaning toward this being an EFI firmware issue. I've noted on another site that these minis seem to have issues with VMware's ESXi, where the suggested course of action will be an Apple firmware update: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/423099
As the lab is hoping to purchase 40 of these systems, NetBoot support is rather critical. -
HELP!!!!!! iMac "No Entry" sign
Hi all,
My G5 recently started behaving strangly, i.e. not responding when I double clicked on things etc.. and so I did a re-start. When I boot it up, the apple appears and then it is followed by an image of a No Entry sign (rather than the usual log in screen). I have re-booted several times and nothing. I have tried zapping the perameter ram and booting from disc but nothing works.
It is only 1 year old!
Any ideas?

NO ENTRY SIGN ON START UP :(
Hi all,
I have a mabook pro on snow leaopard. I purhased this new in 2009, when I now start up I get a no entry sign after about two mins of the apple grey screen.
I have put my mac os x install dvd in and booted holding down c, this brings up the disc, however, when I go to reinstall there is not a location to install it to its just blank, when I go on disk utilities the only thinks to select are the dvd drive and the cd
Please help someone, I would be so greatful.
Thank you in advanceEr, it looks like a "No Entrance" sign. It's OK the cats at The Genius bar understood - they call it a "No Entrance" sign too. It basically means you're screwed and need to get a new internal drive. Luckily I managed to make a rushed back-up so things are not too severe (just expensive).

Mac Pro Displays No Entry Sign: Won't Start
I came down this morning to find my MacPro with status lamp flashing and display power light on, but screen black and computer totally unresponsive.
Nothing else would work so I shut down the mains supply, disconnected everything except the display and switched it on again.
Got the grey screen with the Apple logo, then the turbine. Then the Apple logo turned to a kind of "No Entry" sign, a circle with a back-slash across it.
Tried switching off power and restarting holding down the Alt key, and it let me select my backup boot, but again I got the "No Entry" sign.
I haven't had any trouble like this before, and haven't done any software updates of late, so it's a complete puzzle - malware attack??
I'm 100 miles from nearest Apple Store: any suggestions what's wrong and/or how to get it going?
TIA
JimIt might pay to run your Apple Hardware Test also. See if it flags the drive.

Strange noise on start-up followed by no entry sign
My Macbook Pro (pre black keyboard) started making a strange noise on start up - a very loud grating noise.
Now I get a 'no entry' sign on start up. I cannot progress any further than this sign.
Any ideas on a fix, please?
Thank you.Karl:
Sounds like you are due for a HDD replacement. Try booting from the install disk, launch Disk Utility in the Utilities menu and see if the HDD appears in the sidebar. You can also boot from the Apple Hardware Test and run the extended test. However, from your description it sounds very much like the HDD. Hopefully you have an up to date backup.
Please post back with an update or further questions/comments. Also include detail or your computer (processor speed, RAM, etc.) in your profile and/or response.
