No external audio

On my MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz Intel Core Duo: The internal speakers and headphones produce sound when expected and test OK. External speakers connected through either USB port or through the video port (in the case of a projector) no longer produce audio. The programs that I know are involved are iTunes, QT and iDVD but I suspect that any program producing audio will have the same problem. The problem started some months ago, but I cannot tie it to a specific event.
External USB speakers show up and are selectable in System Preferences/Sound, but selecting them only kills the internal speakers. Balance and volume controls have no effect. I've restarted applications and the laptop, restarted in simple troubleshooting mode to rule out some sort of program conflict, and reset the PRAM. No effects.
Any suggestions?

No 2.16GHz MBP sends audio out through its dual-link DVI video-out port. The DVI protocol doesn't include any provision for carrying audio. To send audio to your projector, you'll have to run a separate audio cable from your headphone port (or possibly from a USB port, if the projector is equipped for USB audio input).
As for your USB audio problem, do your USB ports work with other (non-audio) devices? If not, you might try resetting the SMC and see whether that reactivates the USB ports. If they do work, I don't know what to suggest.

I am using earphones, but the external audio of my mini ipad is still on. How can I turn off the external audio while listening with my headset/earphones?

Other than iMovie, GB always incorporates the audio files into the GB package. So just save or move the GB project to the external drive, and you're done - anything you import, edit or record will be saved to the external drive.

  • Can I select an external audio source?

I have  iMovie09 ver 8.0.6.  I'm using a Panasonic video camera (it uses miniDV tapes) connected to my MacBook (white plastic 07) via firewire.  When I have the cable from the mixer going into the camera and recording to tape; when I transfer the tape to MacBook, I get the external audio source great!!!  However, when I plug the cable directly into the MacBook, it still gives me the audio (BUT) from the built-in mic of the camera.  When I open GarabeBand and record the audio, its the external and its great.  However, I don't want to have both recording at the same time only to overlay the GarageBand audio onto the video clip.  Yes, I've selected the 'in-line' option from 'System Preferences'.
Is there a way that I can select the external source while in iMovie??  Looking at some other negative posts, I don't want to upgrade to iMovie 11 either.

I came across a much older post which I believe solved my issue.  I connected everything up first, then booted up the MacBook; then I selected 'built-in audio' from the 'voice-over' option within iMovie.  It recognized it right immediately.  However, now I'm not sure that the audio is in fact coming from the 'hot' microphones that I'm receiving from the mixer.  But that's just troubleshooting.

  • No Audio Out Of Headphone Or External Audio Output Jacks

We have a Rev. B Bondi iMac that I recently put in my wife's 4th grade classroom for her to use. When trying to hook up external speakers I discovered there is no audio output from the side audio output jack or the front two headphone jacks when listening to the CD player. (I also checked using headphones)
The internal speakers sound fine and normal. I do hear something very distorted and weak from the external audio output jacks but it is so distorted the only way I can tell it is coming from the CD player is by pausing its playing. I have been into OS X now for about 15 months and am starting to forget everything I knew of OS 8.6 which is in the Bondi.
I checked the sound portion of the Monitors and Sound Control panel and all seems set correctly. Is there some other setting that I have forgotten? Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Herb Mesler...
Other than exercising the jack-ports with a plug from a headphone, it may need some expensive repair. However I do have a trick for you to try first.
    Here is my trick;
Computer must be off! Because there is some light voltage applied to the ports they can slightly arch, spoiling the trick. Arching is the root cause of electrical resistance thus not allowing for proper contact and sound will not pass through to the device.
Next take a plug "softly and full travel" through each port in the side and on the front. I repeat them about 5 times. (any proper spec/type of plug, like from a headphone can work. If it from something that is powered, like from speakers, do not use it)
Boot up the computer and test by avoiding the side ports, using only the front ports. Quite frankly I found the use of the side ports to be somewhat the cause of the problem. Mine has been taped off for about 6 years now and I never have had to repeat my trick to date.
Give it a try and post back if there is any questions. Also, I would like to hear your results.

  • How do I get Logic to sync to external audio device?

Here is what I am trying to do:
I have a Big Ben which I want to use to sync everything together. I have Lynx Aurora converters on the way but for now I need to use a 002 rack with a Presonus DigiMax for audio i/o. So basically, I want to connect BIg Ben to 002 with SPDIF cable and to Digimax with Wordclock cable and that all seems to work fine when Logic is off. However I can't get Logic 8 to sync to the Big Ben through the 002 which is used for ins and outs. I can get everything synced by setting Logic to Internal sync and then sending SPDIF from 002 to Big Ben (which syncs externaly to that) and then connecting wordclock out of Big Ben to Digimax. There has got to be a better way.
I have tried setting Logic to external sync ( not exactly sure which method to use since nothing in the manual says that a particular setting is to be used with the i/o except maybe External or Free in Core Audio under Audio Tab on Sync settings - anyway this didn't work). I can use Digidesign CoreAudio Manager to set 002 to SPDIF but whatever I do, Logic doesn't not reflect changes to the clock rate. I someone could guide me on getting Logic to respond to Clock changes from 002R, I can probably get it going from there.
    Thanks,

This is what I have figured out so far. If I turn off Logic, the 002 and Digimax clock just fine from the Big Ben. When clocking Logic from an external audio source (by using external or free under the audio tab of Sync preferences), that when I change timing of Big Ben, the audio changes to indicate it is receiving word clock. Logic throws up errors saying that there is a mismatch from external sync to project settings or some such error message. I can then change the clock in Logic to match what the Big Ben reads and errors go away and things indicate that it is clocked correctly. This seems to work, I am just used to other programs that when I change the clock setting on the Big Ben that they reflect those changes right away.
And yes I can synch the 002 to the Digimaz but it still doesn't work correctly until I manually change the clock setting in Logic as well. I just wonder if this is how things are supposed to work in Logic or if I am doing something wrong? The 002 is just a temporary solution to get me through a session tomorrow. After then I will have a Lynx Aurora 16 connected with the Firewire option and then use the Lynx AES16 PCIe when it is available in a few week (or hopefully not months). I am just trying to get a handle on how Logic syncs to an external converter. And while Syncing and wordclock are maybe not the same thing, under the sync menu is the only spot where I have found wordclock even mentioned (at least it is in the manual when describing what some of the options allow).

  • Connect external audio + internal audio in the same time

    Hello,
how I can connect my bose companion 2 and permit to operate at the same time the integrated speaker and the external audio speaker? I can with usb-rca cable. where I should bay?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I do not know anyone who has figured out how to do that! You can either use the external speakers or the internal speakers, but not both at the same time.

  • How do I get the sound to go to an external audio system?

I am having trouvle getting my sound to go to external audio system from Logic Pro?

You need to put in a bit more information about what you're trying to do, and what sort of equipment you're using.
Are you using some sort of audio interface?  If so, is the driver installed, and is it selected as the Output Device under Preferences/Audio/Devices?  Then check under Preferences/Audio/Output, that you've got the desired output selected for your audio interface.
If you're not using an interface, then you want to select "Built In Output" under Devices, and you should be able to run a cable from the headphone jack to your external audio system.

  • External Audio Sync Problem

I have video captured at 23.98 fps and I'm trying to match up external audio to the source audio on the clip. The external audio is a 48kbps wav file. When I match the beginning of the clip, the end goes way out of sync. If I try to alter the speed and get the end to match, the middle is still out of sync. I don't have this problem with video captured at 29.97 fps. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Tom, I'm having the same problem. Start with an AVI 30fps clip. Export to DV standard everything at 29.97. All works well. Then match up some sound taken at 48k on a very reliable, stable set of tools - used them before with straight DV from a Canon DVX 100A with zero syncing problems - and the movie and it's sound come up too short by a second or so over fifteen minutes. We should not be having this problem. Did you ever get it solved? Im on FCP version 6.
    Thanks.

  • External Audio/Video in FCP

OIn FCP, external audio plays fine, but the external video yields only a still image. Am running FCP6 with EXCam HD.

Through DVI to an HP monitor, but I get the same response when I view it on the MacBook. Identical. I can view it in the Canvas at nearly full-frame too, but there is no movement in "External MOnitor--All Frames" --only a still.

  • Connecting external audio interfaces?! Issues, help needed!

Ok well basically i'v always used a pc to do music using cubase and a variety of hardware including a steinberg mi4 external audio interface connected via usb. Now on my pc which is actually less powerful than my new macbook (the 2.2ghz model) the interface works with out fault no latency, no distortion.
However once used on my new shiny macbook, for which i'v purchased logic pro as opposed to cubase (felt like a change) when trying to use my interface via usb on the mac through logic i seem to have issues with recording and all sound comes through distorted with a great deal of latency. I'v tried altering the sample depth and the bit rate and nothing seems to work?
I have downloaded mac specific drivers for the hardware so i'm sure its not a driver issue?
Anyone with any suggestion, cos i'm a bit gutted really?
P.s. Does anyone know if you can change the graphics card in a macbook?
    Ben

Hi, im having the same issue, using garageband and logic pro. I used pc to make music with no problems at all with my Zoom g9.2tt guitar fx usb interface.
Now with mac i get distorted and lots of latency.
One way i found that can make this work with garageband is use the internal sound card to play sounds and the usb interface to record this helps a lot. This trick makes it for garageband but not for logic pro(still getting distortion/latency).
By the way i used to have an emachines laptop with 512 ram memory and a 1,6ghz semprom processor, believe or not, easier to record on that one, with no latency and no distortion.

  • Lenovo g580 do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice ?

Hello,  If anyone could help me please ?, I am wondering do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice onto my lenovo g580.?
My friends have said that good laptops have audio interface's built in... but I cannot see how this could work as I am trying to build a home recording studio. Do they mean that I just need to have a mixing desk ? As the audio interface is already in my laptop, ?
Another question I have is... I have bought a microphone to record with a studio mic. But when I plug it into the headphone socket, it works as a speaker and not as a microphone. Please can you tell me how do I make it work as a microphone, and record on ableton. Thanks. I live alone with two cats so I'd really appreciate some help !
Thank you very much, best wishes.

I'm preparing to expand my studio from a 1 man songwriting system,
to add the capability to record a complete live band, with 16 separate
simultaneous tracks recording. Am I dreaming?
Nope. I've been recording live bands with up to 56 channels at 24 bit 48kHz for three years now.
    1) Does my computer have enough native power to handle such a task?
Yes. The actual recording uses the hard drive buss, so you need to make sure you have fast drives and a dedicated FW or SATA buss for them.
    2) Is there an audio interface device that could help shoulder some of
    the cpu load?
No. CPU is used only for routing audio, effects, etc. An audio interface is used to route the audio in and out of the computer, and as such does not process effects at all.
    3) is it possible to use my multiple, fast internal drives to help?
Yes. Although with Logic Pro you can use only one drive at a time for recording. HOWEVER, I have been able to use SATA drives to record up to 56 tracks AT ONCE. So there is plenty of power there.
    4) If not 16, what's the highest realistic track count I can hope for?
Again, I have done 56 tracks. 16 is a walk in the park in comparison to 56. I would recommend you invest in Apogee AD16X and DA16X, since in one interface you get ALL 16 inputs, and the other gives you the 16 outputs to go to, say, a mixer. And the sound quality is very very very good.
    thanks in advance
    You're welcome.

  • Sept 2014 is external audio I/O STILL crashing w/ Flash?

So ever since 'updating' to Mavericks, like many 1000's of people I'm still getting regular semi-random, hard, force-shutdown freezes when using an external audio interface at the same time as Firefox, Safari.....basically any browser. I'm a professional, I have clients, I have private work, it's simply a HUGE pain in the backside. Occasionally a browser will be left on in the background and just kick in and grind everything to a halt or I simply have no choice but to work in a browser for a transcription project. Trying to force quit various processes always seems to point to something Flash related.
I've searched and searched and found suggestions of various workarounds but nothing that really works for me.  My system is lean and I'm using latest versions of everything alongside top-flight audio hardware from various makers with excellent drivers.
This has been going on for nearly a year and unless I've missed some kind of solid workround is just....appalling.

'Unabated' generally meant I was using it and had to leave it briefly or had been using and would return soon. I was under the impression that Flash was required for Youtube etc. Until Mavericks this problem hadn't existed....anyway, though I don' really use Safari due to needing certain Firefox add-ons I had a look at your suggestions then went hunting again in Ffox add-ons and added Flashblock which so far....fingers very crossed, after a few hours of normal use, trying sleeping the Mac and also restarting seeeems (tentative with fingers very crossed) to have prevented any problems.
So, many thanks whatever happens and fingers crossed it sticks.

solved whith the old driver vom archive of vendor: "DMX6Fire_USBMac.1.00c.dmg" thats for 10.5.x for me works.
The newest from the vendor delivered driver 1.22 (marked for 10.5 and 10.6) seems to not work under 10.5.

  • Buzzing in external audio when charging

I have a fairly loud buzzing sound coming through my external audio when my MBP (mid 2010) is charging. I've tried switching speakers and headphones, outlets, between the two and three pronged chargers, and between individual chargers themselves. Nothing I'vetried has fixed it.  The only thing that helps is my own physical contact with my MBP.
    Anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like some problem with grounding your laptop. Sometimes peripherals will create a hissing sound when they don't have the same ground potential. Maybe try getting a new adapter cord, as the ground prong (The big round one if you're in the US) may be broken. If you go to an Apple store and be extra nice, they may give you a new cord for free, and save you 60 bucks.
