No file locking in office 2004 with local user

A user shares his home folder on Mac OS X 10.5.8. This user has a Excel file open in Office 2004. When an other user opens the same file using AFP file sharing there is no message warning the user the file is being modified by the local user.
All software is up-to-date. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
This problem does not occur in Office 2008 with 10.6 clients.

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Office 2004 is not compatible with OS X Lion.
You can upgrade to Office 2011 or use the free LibreOffice. Compatible with all major competitors' file formats. You can easily import files from Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and many other formats, and can easily save to Microsoft Office and other formats when needed.

File Locks and SMB shares with ML

I've been doing a lot of research on SMB and the way it locks files during access. I've made a lot of ground work in my research but could use a little further assistance from this support community.
The symptom is simple to explain: Users are occasionally being prompt for a username and password when attempting to rename or move files and folders.
After doing some research on this topic, I have discovered that there is a direct relationship to files being open on the server at the time the user is attempting to rename or move the folder. The following thread, albiet old, appears to have nailed the problem on the head http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=24558131. In particular, there appears to be file locking happening when preview is turned on through the finder. I've had all users remove preview from their Macs and this appears to have helped reduce the occurances of the password prompt, but has not completly solved the problem. This is also a work around, not a fix.
I've been using a series of command to help me trace the problem including openfile.exe on the Windows 2012 Storage Server (sharing the files via smb only) to discover who has what files open on the server, and the lsof command on the client workstations to discover what process has the file open. So far, the finder is consistently the only thing with the file open... even with the finder preview turned off. I've also found that the "open file" is simply the fact that the offending users Mac has a finder window with just the folder open (none of the files within the folder or previews open).
Is the real solution to simply close all finder windows when you're done working in a folder, or is there more that anyone can think of to help me find out exactly what is holding the file lock? Is this a known bug in the SMB implementation of ML? Can we expect to see a fix with Mavericks which will now be using SMB2.0?
Any help or information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I have a bunch of documentation on this issue and would be happy to share. Please let me know if anyone needs any additional details.

Hello all - many apologies for my delay in posting here; and Squiggle, thanks for the second-hand nudge. As Stephen said we have been testing a solution concerning a setting in Finder's view options for the last few months, and these seem to have solved the issue in hand.
Essentially, we found that Finder was holding files open whenever the 'Show Icon Preview' option was set, on any of the four folder views, on any client machine accessing the share. Below is a piece of documentation I wrote up for our Service desk explaining how to diagnose and manually fix this issue on the client:
        - In Finder, open any folder
        - Click on the cog icon and select 'show view options.' Check that, in the dialogue box which appears, the 'Show icon preview' box is not checked. Click the other three Finder views and check it's turned off here too.
        - Click 'Use as Defaults'
In order to make this change remotely on multiple machines, you will need to change the clients' com.apple.plist files, and set every instance of the <showIconPreview> key to <False>. This is nested within several key / dictionary pairs in com.apple.finder.plist, once under <standardViewOptions> and thrice within <standardViewSettings>. As Stephen has already mentioned, the fact that this key is nestled deep within compound dictionaries seems to render them untouchable by defaults, though I would be very happy to be corrected on this.
How you push this change out will depend on your management system. We had been using Casper to
to create a managed preference pertaining to <standardViewOptions> and <standardViewSettings> within com.apple.finder.plist. These contained as values the entire dictionary associated with these keys, with the value for each <showIconPreview> set to false. This was then applied at a User Enforced Level (running every logon after Finder has set up the system defaults).
As a side note, I have found that certain machines (Such as the 10.8.3 machine I'm working on now) contain a key named <FK_StandardViewSettings>, which I have been unable to ascertain the purpose or origination of. These don't seem to affect the fix, so we've left them alone.
Irritatingly, Casper has dropped support for custom Managed Preferences in their latest release, so this problem has now resurfaced. I will keep this page updated with any fixes or workarounds I find.

SSO for application systems with local users?

Hi all, I'm new to Oracle Identity Management. My company is going to implement SSO for inhouse applications. However, some applications have their own local users (e.g. admin, guest, etc.) who have to login to the application system through the same interface. We put all organization users in an Oracle enterprise Directory server, which is the authentication backend of the Access Manager. After implementing webgate, such local users can't get authenticated. I'd like to know if it's possible to configure particular users/applications to bypass SSO and use local authentication? Thanks.

Possible solution is to create a new entry point for local users. Create two proxies one for actual user entry and another for local user. You can restrict n/w access to proxy with local login so that only few hosts based on your requirement who needs to access system with local accounts. This way you will have two web sites for single application.

How can I share MS Office products with all Users on my Macbook Pro?

The other 3 user accounts on my Mac Pro do NOT have access to Word, Excel, etc. How can I "share" these Applications? They don't show up in my admin user's 'Applications'. I'm new to the Mac (love it so far) and I don't know how to do some basic things yet. Thanks in advance

Problem with local users printing to the printer queue

We have just upgraded our servers to 2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon which is running OS X 10.5.6
I have set up the printer queue to the network printers, through LPD.
Open directory users are able to print to the network printers without any problem however when a user local user to a machine (all 10.5.6 but different models) are not able to print.
The printer pauses and does not print.
Any solutions?

I am not quite sure of your setup based on your posting so apologies if my reply is not appropriate.
Are you saying that when the Mac attempts to print directly to the network printer (rather than via a queue created by selecting an Open Directory printer) the printer queue pauses?
If yes, then I would ensure that the LPD protocol was selected and the correct queue name was entered - as this can often cause the spooler to pause.

Secure External LDAP with local user provisioning in a org.

To all:
I'm working with 05Q1 or as some say v3. I was able to successfully set up user authentication with external ldap and dynamic creation of users with in local org and ldap and map over attributes for storage into local ldap. Now I need to try and make it a secure external ldap authentication. Without disturbing any of the other orgs with in the local system.
Is it possible without turning on security for all? Where would the certs be stored for the secure external LDAP that I am authenticating against?
Help would be appreciated.
If anyone is trying to do the same thing let me know if your having trouble. I sure did, just getting to the point that I am right now.

Will Office 2004 work with Mac OS 10.4.11?

I'm currently running Office 2004 with Mac OS 10.4.2 but will soon be upgrading to Mac OS 10.4.11. I'm wondering if the Office currently installed on my computer will work with OS 10.4.11.
(All the component apps of Office are marked as Version 11.2, except Entourage, which is marked as Version 11.2.1.)

Shouldn't be any problem. I used Office 2004 with 10.4.11 for quite a while until I bought Office 2008.
You might want to update your Office apps, though, with the latest security updates and bug fixes. My Office 2004 apps are all 11.3.something versions.

I can't understand how the MS Word is related with DivX and QuickTime at the file saving stage... The problem appears with any file's content and even with empty file

It appears that the DivX encoder is Intel only and installs itself at a low level in the OS. That is causing PPC applications such as Office 2004 to crash. You would probably only see crashes in PPC-only applications such as Office 2004. There could have been some issues when you upgraded to 10.5.3, but those problems are entirely due to your 3rd party system extension, not 10.5.3.

ACL's + File Locks

Hi,
We have recently installed a replacement Xserve with 10.5.4 all is fine apart from a few issues. I have created user and group accounts and assigned posix permissions. When a user saves a file to the Xserve I want all in that group to have read/write permissions as we as the author. However as it stands only the author has read/write with all others having read only. Do I need to use ACL's to avoid this?
I also have an issue with file locks, for an unknown reason multiple users can open and work on a single file, how can I stop this!

Apart from the command line (which you've tried without much success seemingly) you can inspect the Protocols tab in Workgroup Manager. If 'Inherit Permissions from Parent' is not grayed out then you don't have ACLs enabled.
Whenever enabling or disabling ACLs for any volume you must restart the Server. On successful log in the option that was not grayed out before will now be grayed out. It's a common mistake that most people make and if your browse this Forum you will see it mentioned many times.
From the command line issuing:
fsaclctl -a /serverbootdrivename
Should result in a return that looks like this one way or antoher:
mylaptop:~ user$ fsaclctl -a /
ProcessVolume: processing /
Access control lists are not supported or currently disabled on /
Where / is the boot drive. Sometimes ACLs don't take because of drive/directory issues. Troubleshoot these first using whatever methods seem appropriate to you. Occasionally a format may be required to 'cure' persistent problems.

Microsoft office 2004 for mac installation problem

Hi there,
I initially download the microsoft office 2004 trial. I bought the student & teacher edition and install it in my macbook. There was a uninstall button on the trial software that I press and I don't know if that removed the trial version. The problem is "this product is license to office 2004 test drive user, my name and product ID number" are all showing initially when you press any of the office 2004 icon. Having the test drive user showing up makes me wonder if the trial version was totally deleted. If the trial version was not deleted, will it slow down the program and how can I remove it without re-installing the full version that I bought.
