No Fringe Correction in Aperture?

After using ACR and PS for quite a while, and playing with Lightroom versions here and there, I finally got Aperture (v.1.5).
While there are many things worth discussing, here's just a quick question:
Is there no tool for correcting fringing in Aperture?
It does its magic in ACR and LR, and I assumed that the fact Apple isn't putting it on Aperture's feature list is because it's just to be considered a standard tool in a RAW imaging application.
But, hmmm, I can't find it...
Am I missing something?

Distortion correction functionality similar to PTLens/PTMac would be a handy feature for the next version of Aperture.

  • Can I do a geometric correction in Aperture?

I have a photo, taken of a house, which was take from too low a point on the ground, looking slightly 'up'. The result is that the house appears to be 'leaning backward', not sitting straight up. Is there something among the powerful tools provided by Aperture that can assist me in correcting this? I dont want to shoot a negative and get out my enlarger and set up a dark room to take care of this simple problem.

Or you could purchase a plug-in for Aperture. See the link: http://www.apple.com/aperture/resources/plugins.html. I use PT Lens for lens correction. It works extremely well and has the benefit of keeping your workflow within Aperture. There are scores of plug-ins available. I have also found Noise Ninja to be very effective at reducing noise.

  • Lightroom 4.1RC2 no export color fringe correction to CS5 Camera Raw 6.7RC

The new colorfringe correction method in Lightroom 4.1 RC2 works fine even for difficult longitudinal CA when used with care. After basic adjustments I normally export my raw file to CS5 for further editing.
However found out that even after the Camera Raw update to 6.7 RC my Lightroom colorfringe adjustments were not transfered to CS5.
I sincerely hope this is not true: but do we require to buy CS6 with Camera Raw 7 to open the raw image with Lightroom corrections for colorfringes maintained?

I just confirmed for myself that the defringe adjustments do not transfer to Photoshop when you tansfer via an "Edit in Photoshop."
Hopefully this is very temporary (until we get ACR 6.8 for CS5), since I regularly bring raws into PS via the "Edit in" route.  I find this is useful to see if further improvements are possible.  A good percentage of the time the answer is no, in which case  I leave the image as a space-saving 16-bit raw, rather than a  bulky 16-bit tiff.
As things stand now, I''l have to first render my images as Tiffs in LR, then erase those that don't benefit from PS processing.  Yuck.
That defringe is a really nice tool, though!

  • Lens Correction in Aperture?

Does Aperture have a database of every brand and lens? Or must a user designate the lenses he owns in the setup procedure.

I just downloaded the trial sample for PTLens. It will take a bit of learning to have confidence to work the adjustments. For instance, when finished with an adjustment of an image, do you hit the Return key on the Mac, or hit the Reset button in PT Lens?
At a cost of only $25, I am impressed. It is sad that I already own DxO, which cost $150. But, isn't that why God created eBay. :-)
I am more impressed reading the comparison of DxO and PT Lens in the DP Review website.
Just to be curious, what camera and lenses do you own? I have a modest collection, a Nikon D7000 (crop sensor) with 4 lenses and 3 flashes. When I was a photojournalist working in Tokyo, my company would buy Nikon equipment directly from the Factory. It is funny that, not until I got a DSLR did I ever use a zoom lens. Now I have two.
Thank you for the wonderful intro do PT Lens.

  • Printing correctly in Aperture and too dark in everything else.

New to photography and purchased LightRoom 2 on a friends recommendation. I really like the program. However, no matter what I tried it printed too dark. All sorts of profiles, printer driver color mangement yes/no and while I could get just a slight raise in brightness and color, it was no where near acceptable.
Did a trial on Elements and Aperture. Elements also printed dark which shouldn't be surprising both Adobe.
Last and what proved to be far from least is Aperture. While it may not have the features of the Adobe gear at least it prints right. I can now get a very nice print with my Epson 4880 with one of the built in profiles (as it should be in my opinion).
I understand the need for a proper ICC profile for best results but it seems to me you should at least get a reasonable foundation to work with. I just could not get good color saturation or proper brightness level no matter what I did. From what I read on the net I'm not the only one. Interesting how Adobe must work extremely well with millions of other Macs and PC's but not mine.

I'm no expert in color management
An expert in colour management engineeri can fail in configuring any two ICC-enabled applications for compatible assumptions. Understanding the architecture is one thing and understanding the current conditions for configuration are another.
In such situations as this, the best bet is to ask the Apple ColorSync Users List.

  • Could Aperture use the PTlens database for corrections?

One notable missing feature in Aperture is automatic lens-specific correction of, e.g., distortion. DxO Optics Pro handles this superbly, and there is some support in Adobe Bridge. There is a PTlens plugin for Aperture, but it would be far better for Apple to license the crowdsourced PTlens database to provide automatic correction in Aperture. It wouldn't cost much for Apple, but would add a huge amount of functionality and eliminate the need to use a plugin.
    Aperture 3.5, please?

The only Apple-approved way to request product enhancements is via "Aperture➞Provide Aperture Feedback".  Let Apple know you want this enhancement.

  • Is it possible to correct converging verticals from within Aperture?

Need to correct converging verticals can it be done from within Aperture 3.5.1

Need to correct converging verticals can it be done from within Aperture 3.5.1
    Sorry, no.
Aperture does not support lens correction or perspective correction.
Aperture can however be extended with plug-ins or use external editors for this kind of correction. You can do lens correction with the PT Lens plug-in, or correct converging  verticals with external editors like Photoshop or Gimp.

  • Incorrect Photo Orientation - Aperture 3 to Apple TV 2

About a year ago I imported my iPhoto library of about 23,000 photos to Aperture 3.  The iPhoto library had some small corruptions in it and I was hoping the more robust nature of Aperture 3 would fix these, but the import made the corruption issues significantly worse.  Old Events from iPhoto (now Projects in Aperture 3) were randomly split up all over the place, duplicates of many photos appeared and many photos seemed to have lost the EXIF(?) data indicating which way photos were taken (landscape or portrait mode). As a result of the last problem many photos were on their side or upside down.  Applecare were no use at all, claimed they had never heard of such a problem and had no idea how to solve these issues.
After laboriously fixing most of the problems by hand over the past year, all the photos in my Aperture 3 library (now around 25,000 photos), display the correct way up.
However, I still have one problem I can't fix.  When Apple TV picks the photos up from Aperture (on my iMac), via my WiFi network, it displays around 20% of them on their sides rather than the correct way up.  Rebooting everything multiple times hasn't fixed it. My guess is the Apple TV is reading the corrupted EXIF data associated with these photos, and ignoring their orientation as they appear (after manual correction), in Aperture.
Does anyone have a fix or any ideas please?

I believe that iTunes/Aperture keeps a cache for the photos shared with AppleTV. Those need to be updated. If you can figure out where the cache is and delete it, iTunes/Aperture should regenerate it in the correct orientation. Unfortunately I don't have the time now to figure out where it is.

  • Using Aperture and IPhoto together for RAW

    Hi All,
I have just received my MBP and will be using Aperture to edit my RAW files from a Nikon camera.
I was wondering if Aperture works the same as IPhoto in regards to the library function or do you still use IPhoto to arrange, tag your images etc...
If that is the case how do you do that if you are using RAW files? Does IPhoto recognise RAW images?
I would like to hear your workflow on a MAC.
    Cheers.

Sad to say Richard but you are close but not quite correct. Aperture has a much reduced set of RAW support vs. iPhoto. Of this I can personally attest, but they're both covered on the Apple site.
To add to some other points you address...
iPhoto is still needed for simple integration with other iLife apps., as Aperture has no iLife integration. There is an Aperture2iLife script available (Lightbox software) which automates an export and import process. If you carry an iPod around with photos, then you'll need to maintain iPhoto for that purpose. Welcome to the land of duplicates!
iPhoto does indeed process the RAW and all image work is performed on a JPEG version therafter. The RAW is never used, but is stored in the Originals folder (along with any original JPG or TIF files from the camera if these were shot vs. RAW).
Aperture's RAW converter is markedly superior to iPhoto, and the control and editing options likewise. As noted, Aperture does not change the original RAW (or other imported file), but saves the edit instructions (akin to adjustment layers in Photoshop) for rebuilding the image viewed from the original. Enhanced book and Web Gallery options exist vs. iPhoto ... so integration to iWeb isn't quite as important, though would be very useful.

  • Aperture vs Adobe Camera Raw

    Hey,
So, lately I've been shooting in RAW and have finally found some time to process some of the images. I am a Mac user, so I have the option of using either Aperture, or Adobe Camera Raw (Lightroom). Can someone please explain to me the main difference between the two programs, in terms of their ability to retouch/edit RAW images. I've had experience with Adobe Camera Raw (through photoshop cs6) and believe it is an excellent piece of software, does Aperture provide the same kind and quality of tools. The reason I am asking is because while I need a program to help process the RAW files, I also want to organize them in a library where I can see my edits. I am currently using iPhoto and I like the way it works.
So to summarize the question, is aperture as good at processing/editing RAW images as Adobe Camera Raw? If not, why, what are the differences?
    Thanks!

So to summarize the question, is aperture as good at processing/editing RAW images as Adobe Camera Raw? If not, why, what are the differences?
Much of the difference between the two has to do with the way brushes work (for local adjustments) and some features.
    Brushes:
In ACR, the adjustment brush works as a multi-parameter brush where you brush in strokes and can adjust quite a few parameters after adding the brush stroke (e.g., exposure, highlights, shadows, sharpening, noise reduction, clarity, saturation, etc.). ACR adds a 'pin' for each new adjustment which can then be selected to change the parameters of that adjustment.
In Aperture, you use what is called a 'brick' which is a panel dedicated to the type of adjustment (e.g., enhance, highlights & shadows, edge sharpen, noise reduction, etc.). In this case, you use each 'brick' (or panel) to change the brushed in parameters for that specific type of adjustment.
In summary; you can add or change more parameters in ACR with one brushed adjustment than you can in Aperture, but both can add or change the same parameters (with the exception of exposure, which Aperture doesn't currently do as a local brushable adjustment).
ACR has arguably better sharpening and noise reduction control. ACR also has a gradient tool and lens distortion correction which Aperture currently lacks.
I do find that brush speed is about the same with a lot of adjustments added, with Aperture getting better marks overall.
All that said, I would be surprised if Aperture didn't receive some of the tools it currently lacks in the future.
As far as RAW decoding goes, Aperture relies on the OS X camera RAW compatibility feature to render RAW files, so you will already have a sense of what that default render is like with iPhoto and Preview. Aperture can alter those parameters either as a RAW fine tuning preset that you create or with the adjustment bricks.
FWIW, I have been using Adobe ACR at work (on Windows) since it's inception; and while I like the results with some images with regards to highlights, shadows, sharpening and noise, I can get there faster with Aperture. I also don't agree with Adobe's new rental policy for the CC line, so won't be investing in their products anymore. I quite like the 'App Store' paradigm.
    Hope that helps.

When does this error occur? When you ctrl-click images in Aperure's Browser and use the command "Share > Facebook"? Or when you try to open your Facebook albums in Aperture's "Shared" section?
    What is your Aperture version?
When I just tried to visit my Facebook test album from Aperture from the "Facebook" drop-down menu
I also got an error message.
That vanished, after I signed directly into my Facebook account using Safari. Then I opened each album on Facebook and checked the settings.
After that, FB uploaded the albums again correctly from Aperture.

  • Photo Orientation in Referenced Aperture Library

I am taking my Managed Aperture Library and moving it to Referenced. As I do so, I am noticing that many of the "portrait" shots in the library don't seem to maintain that orientation in the Finder. The portrait orientation shows up correctly when I look at the photo in Aperture, but when I go to "check" on the original file in the Finder, the icon of the photo and the photo itself when I open it with Preview revert back to "Landscape". Any thoughts as to why?
I have also noticed that when I export the "version" then the orientation is correctly saved with the file. When I export the "original" the orientation is NOT saved with the file.
Ideally I would like the "originals", which are referenced and consequently simply stored in the Finder, to correctly reflect orientation when I view them outside of Aperture, for example with Preview.
I am also aware that Aperture does not modify the original photo. But when I take a photo in "Portrait" orientation, my camera (and most modern digital cameras) record the orientation in the EXIF data in the photo. It is my understanding that this is how the Finder/Preview or any other application knows how to display the photo from an orientation perspective. Indeed, if I take a portrait photo straight from my camera and place it on the Mac Desktop, the orientation is correctly displayed. When I them import that photo into my referenced aperture library, the photo's orientation appears correctly in Aperture, but  if I look at the original in the Finder or Preview, the orientation is lost.
    Hopefully this makes sense.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I just ran into this issue and found your post from a search. Maybe too late for you, but for anyone else who finds this, here is the solution:
In the export dialog when exporting "Originals...", select "Don't Include IPTC" for "Metadata".
The behavior doesn't make any sense, but that's how I fixed my exports!

  • Load GPS log into Aperture : why altitude is lost ?

    Hello,
I was trying to get rid of the external programs I used to join GPS information to my photos by replacing them with the "places" function of Aperture.
After a bit of headscratching due to poor results, I found a Feb.2010 discussion where user mvanderbilt posted this :
    --- quote ---
This is how I got Aperture 3 to assign correct locations to my photos using a GPX file (in my case, from a Garmin GPS device)
    1) Import the GPX track data. You should see a purple line on the Places map.
    2) Pick one of the photos in a project for which you know the location.
    3) Drag that photo onto the correct spot -- Aperture helps you by showing the difference between the photo time and the GPX time. The clock on either of those devices may be off, or in the wrong timezone, and this first photo placement calibrates the timing for the rest
    4) After you choose the location Aperture 3 will ask if you want to assign the locations of the other photos based on time. Click on "assign location" and the rest of the pictures will be placed relative to the location of the photo you located in step 3.
I wish the manual was more clear on this. It took a while to figure out what Aperture was doing, and my photos were often assigned to incorrect locations (but in retrospect, Aperture was doing what I told it to do).
    -- unquote --
Well, tried with these instructions and apparently now everything is fine but........ where is the altitude data ?
I mean, my GPS logger duly write in its NMEA0183 file latitude, longitude AND altitude : why Aperture seems to recognize only latitude and longitude and NOT the altitude ?
I am sure of the logger because if I still use GPSPhotolinker all data are correctly transferred so, either I'm still doing something wrong or Aperture do not recognize the information.
    Any hint / help ?
Many thanks to everybody & have a nice day.
    Marco

Writing the elevation data is quite simple, so I do not understand why Aperture is not able to do it.
Personally I think the best software available out there is Exiftool, and if you want  a more user friendly application that uses exiftool and does a good job at geotagging, try photolinker
    G'day jgcmac
I've been trialling photolinker to add geotagging data to images before importing into aperture. It's really good however the altitude data won't show up when manually tagging the images. Does this only work if you've got a log file (GPX) from a data logger?
