No Genius Mixes with Manual Management?

I have an 8GB iPhone, and considerably more music in iTunes. For this reason, I have manual management of songs and videos enabled, but it appears that, under iTunes 9, I can't have Genius Mixes (mixes, mind you, not playlists, playlists are fine) on my iPhone. Is there something I'm missing?

there is a work around. You will have to sync your playlists rather than manage your music manually and at the same time control what tracks go on to your iphone.
I usually create a playlist in itunes called "iphone" which I use to keep track of music I want to put on my iphone. You can then select all the music in your itunes library and Control-click to bring up the contextual menu then select untick selection. Then go into the "iphone" playlist in itunes (which will have the music you want to put on your iphone, and select all the tracks there then go tick selection. So your iphone music will be ticked and all other music will be unticked. You then select "sync only ticked songs and videos" from the info page in your iphone set-up section, its right above "manually manage music". You then sync the playlists you want: the "iphone" playlist you created and whatever Genius mixes you would like. when you sync, you will have created Genius Mixes on your iphone that are limited to the songs/albums you want to have on your iphone (the ones that are ticked in your itunes library) without the fear of copying the songs that you don't want on there
Ofcourse, if you then "manage music manually" and apply, you will not erase the music from your iphone but you will lose your genius mixes for some reason. if you want to go back to syncing using playlists, then you sync to that iphone playlist again and your music will not be erased and reloaded again.
I manage music manually myself and would like to be able to do that and still retain the genius mixes. apple should sort this out! In the past, I have found it to be a good idea to occasionally sync my music using the "iphone" playlist I created and then change to manually manage music and delete the playlist from the iphone in the devices section, which deletes the playlist but keeps the music on your phone. I did this believing that the genius database information would sync properly this way, because genius database info is not linked to tracks you would manage manually and therefore would not update everytime I synced my phone. I also came across some issues with losing album artwork and ratings not updating when I only managed things manually.
I hope that hasn't been too confusing for you. If you play around with it, you should get the hang of it

  • Genius Mixes with 120GB Classic?

Pretty self-explanatory. Since the hardware is exactly the same (save for the hard-drive, of course) as the 160GB, will this feature come to the 120GB via a software update?

I would have thought that the Classic would be the ideal choice for the Genius Mixes feature since it is the one model with the largest capacity. The Classic is getting the back seat for sure. I am one that likes to keep all of my music with me . I do not listen to my music through iTunes on my computer only through my iPod through different avenues making the genius Mixes feature totally useless.I use iTunes only to manage my music. Apple missed it big this time around. Needless to say I am very disappointed. There will always be a market for the larger capacity iPods. I hope that Apple reconsiders and adds the feature to current 120 gig and the new 160 gig model.

  • ITunes Match, problems to sincronize the Genius Mixes with my iPad and iPhone

It's pretty simple, meanwhile in iTunes of my Macbook Air (with iTunes Match activated) I can have the genius mixes that I wish, but in the music of my iPad and iPhone (with iTunes Match activated too), only I've got 4 mixes; I do not why and I've really tried everything, I mean, activate, deactivate, synchronize manually, etc. In spite of all I didn't get the genius mixes in my devices. ¿What is it the weirder? It's in the beginning all worked wonderful, I mean, when I activated for first time iTunes Match everything was OK, there wasn't any problem if I sincronized, but suddenly, one day stoped to make its work, ¿Can anybody help me? I really I'd appreciate it. I've more than two thousand songs and the genius mixes are very easy to listen music. thank you.

Ok, I see. Keep in mind that the Genius mixes in iTunes will not be exactly the same as the Genius mixes on your iOS devices. I don't know why this is, but I suspect it is because they are locally generated. So you simply may not get more than 4 mixes on your devices.
I think, though, the best trouble shooting step is to disable iTM on the devices, launch the Music app and let the content clear out, then re-enable the service on the devices. See if that gives you any better results.

  • HT1535 Problem with manual management - I need help?

When I click on the "Manually Manage Music and Videos" box, I am informed that my iPhone is synced with another library - and it wants to delete everything on this phone an replace it - I don't want that!

You cannot toggle between Manually Manage and Sync. You choose one or the other and stick with it. The easiest solution is to leave Manually Manage unchecked. Create a playlist, put the content you had intended to manually manage in the playlist, then add the playlist to the content to sync on the Music tab on the iPhone screen in iTunes.
Note that you also cannot sync OR manually manage the iPhone with more than one computer. If you change computers you must start over.

  • Problem with manually manage songs and videos  on my iphone !

So, I accidently deleted Itunes from my cumputer. I downloaded it again but my library "Charles" was now "Itunes" , so it wasn't my Iphone's "home" library anymore ... And the case " Manually manage songs and videos" wasn't selected , but when I clic on it and put "Apply" a windows appear and tell my I have to Sync. with the new library because I can't do it with more than one library ... The result is : I can't manually manage songs from my cumputer to my iPhone with Itunes, If I sync I loose every songs and videos I have on my iPhone ! I need some help to be able to manage manually my songs without sync first !

a very good explanation given by the great wjosten
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from her phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your GF's computer, her phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to her phone or music ripped on her own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from her phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book, iCal) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect her phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on her phone will be in her itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore her itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding her contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

  • Help with manually managing music on iPhone

I set up my iPhone on my pc and just got a macbook. I want to manually manage music and video so I can use both, but when i set it up to do so on my pc my mac wants to wipe everything. How do i set it up to manually manage music on a mac and a pc?

An iPhone does not support want is called disk mode which is required for this.
An iPhone can be synced with iTunes content on a single computer only, and the same for manually manage music and video. You can sync contact information, calendar events, and bookmarks with multiple computers, but not with iTunes content, and the same for photos transferred from a computer to an iPhone.
If you want to sync iTunes content with your MacBook, you need to transfer your iTunes library from your PC to your MacBook.

  • How to prepare for phone upgrade with manually managed music

I have an iPhone 5 and I am strongly considering upgrading to the iPhone 5s. The trouble is that I have manually managed all of the music on my phone: I dragged and dropped every song I wanted from our iTunes library to my phone. I like to keep my phone private, thus I don't sync my photos, books, or ringtones in iTunes either. There are also a lot of extraneous contacts and such on the computer that I wish to avoid deleting from my phone. How can I retain my information when switching to a new phone?

    Hi,
In my case I installed AP3 and honestly no crashes or major issues other than some slowness in AP3 but I see it's been solved with the updates and my workflow maybe helping too.
I run a managed AP3 library on a fast external drive connected via eSATA card to my MBP.
In your case I would say add more RAM (never hurts) although 2GB should be ok for now.
Leave your AP3 Library on the main drive and reference your files that exist on the second internal drive.
When importing, you have a choice as to leave in current location(so referenced)
    or have AP manage library.
As far as the size of your library at 286GB, it my be a good idea to install another internal drive in the Mac Pro.
    So
drive 1) Boot drive with OS and all your apps.
    drive 2) AP3 Library
drive 3) Original RAW files that your AP3 library can reference-as long as you tell AP to reference the files upon import.
eventually maybe a 2 TB external drive (usually made of 2x1TB drives in one enclosure)
and this external can be used to back up your AP3 library on one drive and your original RAW files on the second drive.

I hope this helps but lets see what others may advise.

  • Problems with manually managing songs after 1.2.1 ipod update

after I updated my ipod to the 1.2.1 version, I can no longer view or edit all the songs that are on my ipod. beforehand I could view them like the library but now I don't know how to remove certain songs from my ipod. is there any way to fix this?

So, when you connect the iPod and click on the little disclosure triangle to the left, you don't see a list of your music currently on the iPod?
If the iPod is still set to manual, the music should be shown in bold type and be editable.

  • Manually manage music and videos? Not if iTunes is involved.

I don't do automatic syncing or music libraries, I run a recording studio and at the end of the day, I like to chuck a mix onto my phone and listen to it on the way home. Then when I get home, I might want to add some other stuff and compare it to the mix I added earlier.
As far as I can see (and I have trawled the web for hours today,) iTunes is not prepared to let me do this, even with "manually manage music and videos." Is it the case that should I want to just add a tune to my collection from a secondary computer, that iTunes will insist on blanking my entire mp3 collection before it lets me do anything?
Surely that can't be right, can it?

If by "phone" you're referring to an iPhone, unfortunately that is correct. An iPhone, unlike most iPods, can only by synced to a single computer for media content.

  • Updating and iPod that has preferences set for "manually manage songs..."

I have my iPod set with "manually manage songs and playlists" so that
    (a) it won't try to update every time I connect it; and
    (b) so that I can see all of the songs from my iTunes application, as I don't store my music library on my laptop computer.
But sometimes I do want to do a full sync of the iPod to my music library. I'm not sure how to do that. If I select "update ipod", it says "iPod update complete", but doesn't really do anything.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

Hi, Michael, and thanks for your help.
I realize I can change the options to "automatically update..."
But the whole point of my inquiry was to find out whether there's a way to NOT have that preference set, as I
    (a) don't want the iPod updating every time I plug it in; and
    (b) want to be able to see its songs on other computers when I'm not seeking to update it.
What I want is a command that I can initiate that will say "act as though the automatically-update preferences were on and do a full update just this once".
I suppose I can go in and turn the preference on, do the update, then turn the update off, but it seems like lots of steps. I might have thought that there would be a control+click command that would accomplish this all in one click.

  • Manual managing music on 2 computers?

with my ipod I can manually manage music on multiple PC's
on my wife's Iphone it goes to auto sync on the 2nd PC
    am I doing something wrong?

Since disk mode is required for this, probably for security reasons which is not a concern with an iPod only without internet access.
what would be the purpose of manually managing then?
Good question, since the primary benefit when doing so with an iPod is transferring iTunes content from an iTunes library on more than one computer. Some habits are harder to break than others and for those who prefer manually dragging songs to their iPod, the option to do the same with an iPhone is available event though this can be done with an iTunes library on a single computer only. If you are manually managing music and video with an iPhone and the iPhone is restored with iTunes if wanted or needed, you must remember which music and video was available on your iPhone and manually drag it back to the iPhone. With syncing, when restoring your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, your selections under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes are pre-selected since this is included with your iPhone's backup When purchasing music direct with the iPhone, the music will be copied to your iTunes library automatically the next time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so. No so with manually managing music videos. Manual means manual all the way.

  • Itunes genius mix

    Hello,
i got a question concerning the itunes genius mixes. i dont have my whole library on my ipod classic, so i cant synchronize the genius mix with the ipod. my question is, if i can select different playlists, which the itunes would use to create the mixes ?
    thx

    Can you run Update Genius?
This looks similar to my problem (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/22875572#22875572), I also have/had TuneUp installed though I found it didn't really affect anything since iTunes also crashes with the program cleanly removed.

  • Music appears grey with a sync symbol on iPhone 4 (iOS 6.0.1) on iTunes (newest version as of 11/20/2012) and will not play on iPhone. It is set to manually manage music.

So I got a brand new iPhone 4 from a Sprint retailer, and it came with the software that was available at the time of the release. I left it that way for a while and put music on it through iTunes (latest version as of 11/20/2012) with no problems. Then I updated the software on the iPhone to iOS6.0.1 and when i tried to put music on it through iTunes like normal the songs showed up in the library of the iPhone (still on the computer) however they were grey and they had a syncing symbol to the left as if it were still syncing the music. I waited and waited but it would not go away. then I clicked the arrow at the middle top of iTunes where it shows you what song is playing and everything else iTunes is doing, and it did not say that it was syncing the music like normal. Basically the library indicated the music was still syncing but iTunes was not putting it on. I currently have it set to manually manage music. I do not want to switch it to automatically sync or reset my iPhone because I will lose my information. Any immediate help would be greatly appreciated!

When I went to restore my phone, I may have found the cause of these problems. I never deleted all of my original synced songs before enabling iTunes Match.
When I just went to do the restore, I figured I'd delete all of my songs, then disable iTunes Match. After deleting about 3.5 GB of music and disabling iTunes Match, I ran the sync to backup my iPhone. It said there was still 2.2 GB of music. I checked my phone just in case and there was 2.2 GB there, probably the original synced songs that I never removed.
Anyway, I'm doing the restore now just in case and will respond tomorrow with how everything is working.
