No GPS lock in the Dominican Republic

I have installed this version of 3.06 on my Nokia 5230 Nuron
ovi_maps_installer_3.06_11wk7_b11_s60_5.0_nocs_beta.sis
which works very well in the USA. I have no data plan with T-mobile so I do not use any internet connectivity to assist the GPS. I went to the Dominican Republic where I had no T-Mobile coverage (and didn't expect to) for 10 days and just got back. Before I left I loaded the DR map onto my phone. I thought that the GPS should work fine there because it doen't require a data plan and it doesn't require any phone coverage. I could never get a GPS lock or even show a GPS signal while there. Am I wrong about what is required for the GPS to work on these phones?
Thanks.

@gregorycharper
There are no holes in GPS satellite coverage, although the number of remaining satellites which could be brought into service in case of failure are now quite depleted.
As farby pointed out if you relying solely on Integrated GPS as a positioning method, it is like starting OVI Maps application for the very first time again and you need to give it sufficient time to lock on to your new location.

  • When the update to support LTE will be released for Claro in the Dominican Republic?

Claro in the Dominican Republic has launched LTE (since yesterday) and proceeded to sell or give the 4G LTE Sim cards so the users can have the service. I went over, got my new sim card and inserted in my Iphone 5 (A1428), and said to my self "I'm good to go". Turns out I wasn't. Unfortunately, I could not get it working. I even moved around the city to see where I could get 4G coverage.
When I called customer service to argue about the lack of coverage and to discuss that this may be a scam from the company. The customer service person told me to go to settings>cellular> to toggle Enable LTE, and I replied that I did not have that option. Then the customer service clerk argued that I did not have an updated Device. My iphone 5 IOS version is 7.1.2.
After doing some research while on the phone with the customer service representative (it was a 45 min long call) I had to agree with him that maybe apple has to "released" or "enabled"  the service for this specific carrier, just like it happened in Colombia when the LTE was introduced.
Currently there are 3 companies (Tricom, Orange, and now Claro) offering 4G LTE in the Dominican Republic and None are listed in the 4G LTE availability per device per country according to apple.  https://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/.
So my question is: When the update to support LTE will be released for Claro in the Dominican Republic? (it would be great if an apple employee could get involve in this thread, or escalated it to who can do something about it.)

Let me tell you something: no one is saying go and do something illegal to enable this feature on your phone and no one is reporting any confidential information; the purpose of this thread is to clarify some points:
The LTE Network for Claro DO is real, is functional and is not a Scam
The LTE Network works with compatible devices except iPhones, not by decision of the carrier but the manufacturer.
About that the date that when will be available is not a confirmed date, it's an estimate based on previous releases in other countries and information that I received from inside Claro, not a speculation (find the definition). Of course Claro hasn't confirmed because, like other says, is apple decisions and not their (you don't have to be a genius to figure that out).
Forums are to express yourself freely about a specific topic, and to give your point of view whether you agree or disagree with something, but when you do be polite and do it with respect and not with arrogance as you just did hinting others are stupid and do not know what they are doing. Take an advice from some one with a little bit of experience, you don't know when you will need some help.
    Have a good night.

  • I will be going to the Dominican Republic to a resort and would like to know if I need an adapter for my mac and if so what kind and where would I get it.

I will be going to a resort in the Dominican Republic and would like to know if I need an adapter or some kind of special plug for my mac.

You won't need a power adaptor since the AC adaptor auto-switches, but you may need a wall socket adaptor such as in the World Travel Kit on the Apple Store or from AAA or some department stores' luggage and travel section.

  • Can I make purchases in iTunes while I'm at the Dominican republic

I'm in the Dominican republic and wanted to make several purchases in iTunes.  But I keep getting the PayPal account is not verified even though I checked my PayPal account and there isn't any problems with it.  And I checked my iTunes account and there doesn't seem to be any problems with it either.  What can I do to make changes if necessary to make it work.

If you have a U.S. account, the Terms of Sale stipulate you must be in the U.S. at the time of purchase. Certainly, many people have reported being able to purchase while outside of the country. However, others have reported issues.  I suspect that, because your account is funded through PayPalt, it's not going to work.

  • ITunes Store available in the Dominican Republic

    Hi,
We got the iPhones here in Santo Domingo on Dic 4th, just wanted to know when will the iTunes Store accept credit cards from this country? In other words open up the possibility to buying apps and music for the iPhone. Thanks.

Sorry, but we're all just your fellow users here and so have no idea when the App Store will open in the Dominican Republic. Depending on the DR's copyright laws and import and release restrictions, if any, and the availability of an appropriate Internet infrastructure, it could happen quickly or it could take quite a while. Music and video content will quite possibly take even longer as there will be many issues with rights and copyright that Apple would have to work out. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

  • I lost my iphone in the dominican republic but I am technically still covered in the 90 day warranty can I have it replaced or will I have to buy a new one?

I take my sim out of my phone so that I won't be tempted to make phone calls while abroad. I now have the issue of having lost my phone and not being able to find it with the "Find My Iphone". I am still technically under a 90 day warranty but can my phone be replaced or do I have to buy a new one?

The warranty covers defects in manufacturing and workmanship. If your phone is not operating properly and has not been physically damaged, it will be replaced under warranty.
The warranty is NOT insurance against theft or loss.
You will have to purchase a new phone.

  • HT1657 Can I rent a movie here in Canada now on my home wifi and then take my computer to the Dominican Republic and watch it in a few days where there is no internet?

I guess I'm wondering if it will download now and the movie be on my PC for the next 30 days until I start to watch it? Or will I need internet access while I'm away to watch it.
I'd rather rent now and not buy it.

As far as I know rentals can only be downloaded once, I think that it's just bought films that can be re-downloaded (which isn't possible in all some countries).

  • Orange Dominican Republic in the US.

Hello, I live in the Dominican republic and I currently have an iPhone 5 and my carrier is orange in the Dominican Republic. My lock screen button has stopped working and I brought it to my local apple store they said that they would be unable to fix it or replace it. They said that since I was still under the hardware protection that a US store would be able to help me. I am in the US now and I was wondering if I bring it in and they cannot fix it and they replace the phone would they be able to set it up under my carrier or if they would just replace the phone and I would have to set everything up when I go back home?
Thanks in advance if anyone can help me!

Where did you buy your phone?
1). In the DR the Apple dealers are NOT authorized to repair iPhones. Service is provided by the carriers. In this case, as your iPhone is still under warranty, you should talk to Orange.
2).If you bought your phone from Orange in the DR, you might have a problem. The iPhone warranty is NOT international. So I doubt that the US Apple store will replace your phone. You can try, but do not get your hopes up.

  • Trying to call Dominican Republic?

Hello everyone i am new to Skype and was hoping to be able to use Skype to call my family in Dominican Republic. So I purchased the world service for $13.99 I believe thinking that would cover it but I just tried calling my father on my cell phone connected on wifi and I received a message saying I had to add credit? Can anyone help please?

    Hi,
The Dominican Republic is not covered by the Unlimited World subscription.
    Thanks,
    Wiktor

  • Dominican Republic

I wanted to change my SMS from my signin to my phone number, but Skype automatically assigns +1809 as though there is only one area code in use.  Dominican numbers can have any one of three (3) area codes.  Can you all please change this so that it is like the USA, which uses simply +1?

The link (http://blogs.skype.com/2007/03/15/skypein-now-available-for-domi/#fbid=XU1lwMCLtXt)  says that the Dominican Republic has recently been added to the SkypeIn selection.  So It shound be availabal.  However it doesn't show up on the list so we can not purchase a number.  What has happened???  Was it added or was it not added?  can we get a number or NOT??  Would someone please coordinate these things and get the real story our to us.
    Thanks
    Chuck

  • Dominican Republic has two area codes, 1-809 and 1...

I am unable to call family members in the Dominican Republic who have the area code 1-829 as the default 1-809 always overrides it and it is frustrating. Please add the area code so I can make more phone calls. Thanks.

Can you provide steps to reproduce the problem you're seeing? I just typed this number into the dialpad and was able to call it with no problems: +1 829 555 1212. Also, what version of Skype for Mac are you using? (Skype > About Skype)
The skype version I'm using is Version 6.12 (43.  My skype automatically updates (as far as I know).  What I do:
    1. Sign into skype
2.Open the dial pad, the number section is empty and the blue skype logo is where the numbers go.
    3. I type in the #, example 18295551212.
    4. Once the number is typed in the little blue skype logo turns to the Dominican Flag logo.
    5. I press the "call" icon.
    6.  Then it proceeds to call this number 180918295551212.
    7. I've calling it multiple times and it always puts the 1-809 in front of whatever number I am calling.

  • Iphone in Dominican Republic

Anyone been to the Dominican Republic with their iphone? Does the phone work there?

Roaming internationally for data can be much more expensive than phone calls.
Data roaming is off by default with the iPhone, and AT&T has some data roaming packages available.
With the iPhone, you can enable Airplane mode followed by turning on wi-fi access. This will disable all iPhone radios except for wi-fi access. You won't be able to place or receive any calls, SMS, or access the internet via the cellular network, but you will have access to the internet via wi-fi.

  • Safari blocked in Dominican Republic.  Is there a solution?

I have an iPOD generation1 with iOS 4.2.1 and took it to the Dominican Republic while on vacation.  Stayed at the Excellence Resort.  While connected to the WiFi network, my email worked, stock app worked and weather app worked.  Also, if I selected a web site while in e-mail, that page would pop up in safari, however, all of the functions in safari were greyed out and I could not go to a bookmark or even delete the page.  Thought I had a software problem, but as soon as I got back into the USA and connected to a wifi network, Safari instantly became fully functional.
Do other countries block the safari browser?  Could it have been the resort?  We did not turn on our iPhone4 running iOS 5.01 because of fear of roaming charges.  We did take along a Windows7 computer and both IE and Firefox browsers worked OK.
For our next trip, what can we do?  Looking at replacing the iPOD with an iPAD, but now concerned obout travels in the Caribbean and Mexico and not being able to use Safari to browse the internet.  Is there a list of countries that block Safari?

    Hi,
    Change the Port to 443.
You have to now hit enter when you have changed it.
I had to turn SSL on first before mine would work (I Turned it off afterwards)

Try a pram reset;  Power down in the normal procedure, power back up holding the following keys before the start up chime ;  option, command,P,R (no commas)continue to hold these these keys until you hear the start up chimes 2 times, then release. Reboot and see if this helps. If this persists, you should bring the machine to an Apple store, or an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider)  Hope this helps:)
