No Harddrive when booting from OS 9.2.1 CD on G4 MDD 1.25 Dual

I also have a G4, 1.25 GHz dual processor running OS X 10.2.8 and 9.2.1 updated to 9.2.2, 1 GB RAM.
When booting from OS 9.2.1 CD (came with the computer) I do not see any harddrive. Need to reinstall OS 9 for some classic applications.
Drivesetup can not find any disc to format.
Any idea?
PowerBook G3/400   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, kai -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
An OS 9-bootable G4 MDD model requires OS 9.2.2 as the minimum OS. Apparently some models of G4's which require OS 9.2.2 can in fact boot to some OS 9.2.1 Install CDs, but that is all - they can not run the installer or do much else.
Your G4 MDD model originally shipped with a combo set of install disks; none shipped originally with a separate OS 9 Install CD (the last G4's to do so were QuickSilver models). You can ise that set of disks to re-install OS 9 (Classic).
One or more of these Apple KBase articles may help you do that -
Article #106294 - Mac OS X: How to reinstall Mac OS 9
Article #107383 - Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: How to perform Mac OS 9 clean installation with Restore CDs
Article #42929 - Using Restore Discs with Mac OS X 10.2 or later
There can also be an issue with what bus a hard drive is on. As I understand it, in order see a hard drive on the ATA/100 bus on a G4 MDD model when booted to an OS 9 Install CD, the System Folder on the CD must contain the file Mac OS ROM in version 9.5.1 or later. No OS 9.2.1 Install CD (or earlier version) contains that file version.

  • HT1948 Does the macbook use the internal harddrive when booting from usb and when fully booted?

I wonder if the Macbook Air uses the internal SSD drive when booting Mac OSX lion 10.8.2 from a bootable USB stick?
I am suspecting the internal harddrive is faulty because it gives me random system freeze ups during normal use, making me hold the power button to shut it down. So I'm wondering if I boot my macbook from a bootable USB, if the internal drive is used for caching or anything?

    What i'm doing when it freezes is totally random. I am not having any programs open, but for example just clicking on the apple icon or starting up safari, there seems to be no specific program that crashes it. I'm still running without a freeze up after I fixed the drive permissions with Disk Utility. But here is Etrecheck;

  • Ethernet seems to work when booted from Leopard DVD--Not anytime else

Ok. Here is the deal. iMac G5 connected via ethernet cable to router. It will not connect. The airport works fine. I unplug the same cable and plug into macbook pro--it works just fine. Plug it back into iMac.
In network utilities when booted from the disk--I can ping away just fine. So--in network preferences when I boot it up again I attempt to put the IP address, subnet, router yada yada yada in manually and after about twenty five seconds of the program chewing on it--it crashes. Over and over again. Airport works just fine. PowerBook and Mac Pro connected to same network---all check out.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
The internet port is meant for modem, and ports 1,2,3,4 are meant for computers.
After making proper connections reset router for 1 minute, and rebbot it.
Now run easy connect program for configuring router.

  • Error Message when booting from System CD's

Ill advised I put a OSX disk in my hardly used iMac CRT G4 with 64meg of RAM. I did not know about the firmware upgrade required. Discovering my error I tried to use the System Recovery / Install CDs that came with the machine.
When booting from the CD all goes well until about 50% into the boot and then the following error appears on the screen
interfaceLib -- MgmError with a button to reboot the machine and make sure that the C button is held down on the keyboard. BUT the mac is trying to boot from the CD. Holding down the C button makes no difference. Holding down the shift key (preventing the extentions) gets past the error BUT the system restore or system install programs will not run.
    Help! I am really stuck

Not only were you suppose to update your firmware, you also needed to purchase more RAM. The minimum RAM requirement for OS X is 128mb. However, Cat System users strongly recommend 256mb+.

  • [RESOLVED] "Isolinux.bin missing or corrupt" when booting from USB.

Just giving root cause explanation and resolution to closed topic:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=107241
where "Isolinux.bin missing or corrupt" when booting from USB. I hope maybe someone will find it rather than closed topic 107241  :-(
Windows DD and  unetbootin-windows are created for single ISO partition. That's why old Archlinux like 2010-05 will run.
The newest one archlinux-2014.01.05-dual.iso will not work like that because there is UEFI pre-boot (two partitions). That's why it can't find then Isolinux.bin and report it's missing. Of course this kind of issue will appear on old motherboard without / old UEFI support as they can't understand bootstrap and real root fs later.
unetbootin tool is partition driven so it can't do split well 32 UEFI + remaining root.
    Resolution:
If you really don't have any Linux based machine to use Linux DD there is work around:
    1. Install WIndows Virutalbox and extension pack
    2. Download latest Archlinux ISO and run VM from it + USB support map real pendrive
    3. In guest VM booted form Arch ISO just run DD if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/sda (pay attention that SDA is real USB device then).
    4. Wait about 8minutes. halt. unplug usb. Voila.

I am having this exact problem but with dd on Ubuntu 12.04 (my main distro on my main machine).
Perhaps my version of dd is too old?

  • How to use Photoshop CS6 when booted from a different partition?

I have CS6 installed.  I recently created a second partition on my SSD for development in OS X 10.10.  When booted from that drive, I get an error that CS6 was not properly installed and to re-install it.
This is a smaller partition, with just the system and a few development apps, and I'd prefer to continue to run my larger apps from the original, larger partition.
Of course, every app I have tried does this with no issues except CS6.  I usually need to re-enter app serials, but they work.
What files need to be copied from one partition to the other to let the app boot up?

They work fine. I first tried with a clone of my main drive doing an update in place on it.
i guess I will need to boot into 10.9 to use them.
I will mostly use stand-in apps like Pixelmator.

Are you saying you're running Windows in BootCamp or Windows as a Virtual Machine? You can increase the fan speed on the Mac using smcFanControl and use the software OGELTHORPE recommended to observe improvements.
smcFanControl is a Mac application and doesn't work in Windows, but if you set a higher minimum fan speed (which is how smcFanControl works) while running OS X, when you reboot into a BootCamp partition, that minimum speed tends to be carried over.

  • No external disk encryption available when booted from Lion installer

Problem: When booting my Mac Mini from a Lion Installer USB thumb drive, Neither Disk Utility nor diskutil from the command line seems able to actually encrypt an external drive. They both seem to be able to convert the drives to coreStorage, just not actually encrypt the drives.
Background: I was able to successfully preform 3 encryptions from the Lion system on my 17inch MacBook Pro before failing as described above:
    1) I encrypted my main HD in my laptop (using System Preferences > Security & Privacy)
    2) I encrypted my Time Machine backup (Using Time Machine system prefs)
    3) I converted an external 2TB USB drive filled with data (I had a freshly mirrored copy of all this data as backup) using diskutil cs convert -passphrase from the command line
each of the successful encryptions took about 24hours/Terabyte
Here is where I tried and failed, step by step:
    ### Failure 1
I created a bootable backup of Mac OS X Lion on a USB thumb drive. I booted my Mac Mini with it and attached a 2TB external USB drive that I wanted to encrypt. It was a blank drive so I launched Disk Utility from the recovery/installer screen and created 1 partion, GUID, Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Then I went to the Erase tab and chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted), provided a passphrase and erased. It took just a couple seconds and said it was done.
I moved the 2TB external to my laptop running Lion, it asked for the passphrase and when provided the drive mounted just fine but when examined with "diskutil coreStorage list" I see a couple problems (besides the fact I don't believe it encrypted a 2TB drive in 15 seconds)
Conversion Status is NoConversion and it's not listed as revertible - my successful encryptions are listed as "Conversion Status: Complete and Revertible:  Yes (unlock and decryption required)"

Still booted from thumb drive installer, I attached a 1TB Firewire drive with files on it (it is a mirrored copy of an original drive) and l launched Terminal and attempted to use "diskutil cs convert /Volumes/mydrivec -passphrase" to encrypt the drive without erasing it first. Again it seemed to work, it went thru the corestorage step and when mounted on my laptop running Lion I'm asked for the passphrase and it mounts and the files are all fine but again it finished in seconds instead of the 24 hours I was expecting, and diskutil cs list shows a conversion status of "converting" but no progress is being shown in Size (Converted) or Conversion Direction and Revertible says no decryption required

  • Noise when booting from external firewire drive

When booting from a Maxtor drive with OS10.3.9 to the iMac G5 with Tiger the fan makes a lot of noise. Why?
When I reboot into Tiger the fan is normal.
    Reasons?
    Thanks

The fans are controlled by code in the OS you boot from. It sounds like the OS you have on your external Maxtor is older then your iMac G5. As a results it may not have the needed fan control code. When that occurs, the Firmware in the iMac, sets the fans to a high speed to ensure your computer will not overheat.

  • G5 Grey screen (Kernel Panic) when booting from CD

I know there are a lot of posts with people experiencing issues with the grey screen during boot. Most resolutions point to hardware but all state, including Apple's walk through, to boot from CD and run a validation on the hard drive.
My issue is completely different. I get the grey screen of death when booting from a CD/DVD only. I can boot into the OS just fine from the hard drive. But if I try to install another OS, or just boot from the CD/DVD, I get the grey screen.
    What I've done to troubleshoot:
    Reduced RAM to original sticks
    Removed hard drive
    Replaced DVD drive
Tried multiple versions of OS discs (10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.4 server)
Reset the PRAM (Both via keyboard and Open Firmware)
    Replaced the video card
    Replaced the logic board
    Replaced the Processor
Quite litterally the only thing original in this system is the power supply and the memory. However, I only get it when I'm booting from CD so the memory should not be the issue. I've even used a seperate power supply for the DVD drive to see if it was causing an issue.
Any suggestions? I'm looking at possibly replacing the power supply but I'm afraid it's going to give me the same issue.

Thats the thing, I've tried 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and 10.4 server. (CD and DVD) All give me the grey screen. Well 10.2 and 10.3 give me a dark grey square in the middle where the apple should be but then the fans ramp up like it does when you get the grey screen of death.
I've also used two different drives.
It reads the disks fine with no issues. If I boot to the hard drive I can use the system like nothing is wrong. But if I want to boot from CD for any reason I cannot.
If I follow the logic it seems it is something to do with the CD/DVD drive. This is because it works fine when booted to hard drive. If it was the memory or PSU then I'd be getting the problem all of the time and not just when booting from CD/DVD.

  • Why won't DiskWarrior boot up my mac? (no entry sign when booting from DW)

I get a "no entry" sign (black circle with a diagonal line through it" when I try to boot from the DW dvd. I'm not sure which type of macbook I have but it was bought in January 2007, and before my file system got corrupted my OS was 10.4.11 . I can boot perfectly find from a Data Rescue 3 DVD (and have already used this to backup all my files) and from the OS X install DVD, so why am I getting this error when booting from DiskWarrior? The apple sign appears and the cog spins for a minute or two and then the no entry sign comes up and stays there...
    It's DiskWarrior 4.2.

is this a disc which was mailed to you or one you burned? sometimes their downloaded "upgrades" are just for install only, you have to contact them for the disc...
if this is suppose to be a genuine boot disc, it could just be a bad burn. the boot DVDs should be apple partition map.

  • Logic crashing when booting from system drive clone

    Hi,
So I've been copying system drive clones to another drive for backup, but I find when booting from the (internal HD) clone, Logic 9 will consistently crash on me when trying to open various brands/types of plug-ins.
For cloning I've tried SuperDuper, which I own, and Carbon Copy Cloner, which I'm running the 30 day trial of, and had identical results.
Yeah I know it's lame to be using Logic 9, but I have several important projects originally started on 9 that I need to be finishing up now, and those projects don't play nicely with Logic X.
I'd like to update my OS and Logic X versions, but want to have a working system clone before risking it.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks.

Um right after posting the query I remembered what I had learned probably right here back in yesteryear, and that is there is one thing that doesn't translate in the clone.
When doing Get Info on the Logic 9 app, there is a check box for "Open in 32-bit mode". I need to have that unchecked, so I can run in 64-bit mode, but for the "clone", that box gets automatically checked, it is NOT actually a clone, hence the issue I was having with plug-ins causing crashes.
Un-checking that box on the clone solved my issue.

  • Trying to install OSX.4 sys stalls when booting from dvd

I've read many of the discussions on this topic. Some are close but none are exactly like the problem I am encountering. I have a Power Mac G4 that was running OS9.2 and I've been trying to install OSX.4. I've tried every possible combination of starting from the dvd but it dones the same thing at the same point everytime. It restarts from the disk, I get the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel. It will run like this for about a minute or two and then freeze. I can't force quit and I have to restart. I thought it needed a firmware update so I checked the links (I had seen on some of the posts) but it looks like it's a machine that doesn't need one. But I'm not 100% sure how to tell.
I then went back and started with OSX and OSX.2 and they installed fine. I thought it would have to be installed progressively. But I still have the same issue. I am doing an erase and install with each upgrade. The software is a full retail version for each upgrade as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Michel,
Be aware that you can only use an external firewire disk as boot volume since USB is not a bootable interface with MacOS X on PPC-based computers.
The message you receive is o.k. Insert the Install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key. This will boot you directly from the CD to the installer application. Once you selected the language, select disk utility from the MENU, select your External drive and format it as "Apple Extended (Journaled)".
Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation. Make sure you select the external drive as destination!
When you have to reboot you will boot to the internal disk again. That's o.k. Open disk utility and repair the external disk and also permissions on the external. Next download and install the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo). (you are still booted from the internal hard disk, so you will not be prompted for a restart).
Now restart and hold down the Option-key during boot. In the boot-manager you can select the external disk as boot volume. If your computer booted o.k. you made it! Just remember to Repair permissions before and after an update!

  • Hard Drive not recognized when booting from XP CD on docking station

The hard drive on my X60 failed to the point where I couldn't recover and reinstall the image. I have backups of all my data and a docking station so I didn't sweat it. Bought a new drive and installed it and this is when the trouble began.
I created an XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed in to make sure I have the latest drivers. I boot from XP CD and everything works until I try to install Windows. According to the installation CD there is no drive installed!
I reinstalled the drive to make sure and this time I booted off of Ubuntu Linux which installed flawlessly. That leads me to believe that  there is a driver problem with Windows.
I need help! I would like to install Windows on the machine but nothing I've tried works.

    You have two options:
Go into the T60 BIOS and switch the SATA controller mode away from AHCI to "IDE" mode (or pehaps its "legacy" or "compatibility" mode - I forget what specific term is used in a ThinkPad BIOS).
Find the SATA device driver for XP (it's probably in the Intel Chipset driver download) on the Lenovo X60 support web site, download it and install it using the additional driver installation option which is offered right at the start of an XP install.
If you chose option 1, remember to switch the SATA controller back to AHCI mode in the BIOS after you have installed the SATA device driver.
    Cheers,
    Bill
