No HDMI Audio, Failed to Play Test Tone, Can't Change Default Playback Device

Hello, I'm experiencing some real trouble with my HP Pavilion dv6-2160us (with the i3-330M, no dedicated graphics) Windows 7-64 bit, SP1 PC, and I would greatly appreciate some assistance.
I've created a new thread because, despite the fact that many other people have experienced a problem similar to this and have posted what worked for them, nothing has worked for me.
The Problem(s):
My main problem is that I cannot get any audio to play from my PC to my HDMI HDTV.
When I plug my HDMI cable into my PC and TV, the TV is recognized in Playback Devices, but nothing can play to it.
When I try to test the TV in playback devices, I get a "Failed to play test tone" error.
Additionally, I'd like to mention some other odd behavior that I think may be a part of the main problem.
In Playback Devices, I cannot change anything. I can't disable or enable a device, I can't set default playback or communication devices, and I can't save changes inside device properties. Every time I try to change something, like the default playback device, nothing happens or the changes are immediately reversed.
The Question:
How can I get audio to play over HDMI on my PC (It's not a problem with the TV, my other HP machines play audio over HDMI to it just fine.)?
What I've Tried:
I have tried:
Changing the default playback devices, which I'm unable to do
Running the Windows 7 Audio Playback troubleshooters from within a clean boot state
Uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel(R) Display Audio driver
Uninstalling and reinstalling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Uninstalling the IDT PC Audio program from Programs and Features
Disabling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Nothing has worked.
The drivers I have are the latest issued by HP
How can I get this working? I would really appreciate some assistance.
I'm at the point where I'm ready to try pretty technically-involved suggestions, so, please feel free to post those.
Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

  • Sound has stopped working; failed to play test tone; format not supported by the device (Vista x64 Ultimate)

I can no longer hear any sound from my speakers/headphones. This happened suddenly yesterday without any hardware changes or noticeable software updates.
-- The sound is not muted and the volume is set to full.
-- In the device manager, my SigmaTel HD Audio device has no warnings or errors.
-- I can't find any related messages in the Event Viewer.
-- The primary audio device is selected as the default for playback. The mixer shows my media player as being mixed properly to the device.
-- In the sound control panel, under Playback > Speakers/Headphones > Properties > Advanced:
     - I get the error message "failed to play test tone" when I try to Test my Default Format (dvd quality)
     - I get the error message "format not supported by the device" when I try to change my Default Format

    I followed the following steps:
        * using regedit, go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\AutoLogger\Audio and change the “Start” value from 0 to 1.
        * Reboot the machine
        * Try to play an audio file.
        * Post a link to the generated log file which you can find in: %WINDIR%\system32\LogFiles\Audio

Dell confirms it's an OS issue after troubleshooting with me for a couple of hours (wow)
Is there a way to look at this EVM file _without_ installing the Windows Driver Kit??

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Windows Vista Forum.
Upon your description, I see that you have done a lot of research and tests. Unfortunately, none of these troubleshooting works.
Based on my experience, this issue related to "failed to play test tone" can be related to several reasons. It also includes hardware defect. I am confusing why Dell confirms that the issue is related to Operating System. Could you let me know what operation Dell had troubleshot with you?
Meanwhile, here I just provide more troubleshooting except what you performed. If it doesn't work, I may also need to recommend that you contact Dell for support.
    1. Microsoft has released a Hotfix to troubleshoot related to "Failed to play test tone".
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930883
    2. Make sure that these services are started.
    Windows Audio
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Remote Procedure Call
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
    3. I noticed that this issue occurred not long ago, I may need to suggest that you perform a System Restore to the previous restore point when the computer without any problem.
    System Restore
    ==============
    1)     Please click on Start and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Windows Backup.
    2)     Click Restore on the left pane.
    3)     Choose Basic Restore.
    4)     Follow the wizard and click Next.
    5)     If you would like to restore everything in the backup, we can check the box “Restore everything in this backup” on the top of the window.
    6)     We can also browse and choose certain files and folders to restore. Then, click Next.
    7)     Then choose the folder to save the recovered files and click Next.
    8)     When we see a “Restore is complete!” message, click Finish.
Meanwhile, as I know, I'm afraid that there is no other way to look at EVM file except Windows Driver Kit. Maybe there are some third-party software that out of my mind can look at EVM files, you may need to perform more research on Internet.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Failed to play test tone

When ever I try to play any sound, nothing happens.  When I go into the control panel and double click on the “sound” icon, it shows my speakers.  And when click on my sound device or speakers, and hit test, the message I get it "failed to play test tone".
    Now for some background.
    1. I had a different soundcard that was doing the same thing, but I thought maybe it just "went bad", so I bought a new one.  I’ve installed it with no problem.
    2. Yes, all the drivers are up to date.  I've run Windows update numerous times and I've double checked the driver version against the one on the manufactures website - they are the same.  Everything is up to date.
    3. The device manager can see my speakers/sound card and it says its working.
    4. I started out on another forum "Media foundation development - Re:Vista/No Sound/Failed to play test tone" and read the whole thread, did everything it told me to, and I even e-mail Microsoft to get a hotfix.  I installed the hotfix, to no avail.  Nothing has changed, my sound still does not work.
    5. The posters/answers at the above thread said they weren't really audio experts and were directing everyone to this thread.

  • "Failed to play test tone&qu

Ever since I installed the new drivers I get this error " Failed to play test tone"? Has anybody experienced this problem. Please help me get my older drivers installed. Everytime I try to uninstall the beta drivers and restart, DEVMgr instantly reinstalls the drivers. THANKS

I don't know how to solve the test tone error, but to prevent device manager from installing the same drivers again, do this:
After uninstalling all Creative products via the Control Panel -
    go into Device Manager
Find your Sound Blaster entry - right click -> uninstall -> check box to delete driver software -> OK -> restart computer.
Those drivers should now be gone from your computer; your OS my install default generic audio drivers, but the Creative ones should be gone.

  • [SOLVED] ATI HDMI audio fails when playing videos... fine otherwise.

On a fresh install of Arch Linux, despite being an amateur at best. I'm using ATI HDMI audio using the open source driver, on GNOME 3. I'm switching to Catalyst after posting this to see if that might help, somehow.
After adding the radeon.audio=1 to the bootloader, audio on the system began working just fine as long as I restricted myself to audacious (haven't tried another audio player) or the system sound tests. When I try to use VLC, or mplayer2 for that matter, not only does it not play the audio associated with the video but NO audio will pass through the system at all. I have tried changing the audio source in VLC, although default should work... nothing works. Changing the audio in VLC will cause the system's audio to max out. Changing it back to something else doesn't help, but I can change the volume after closing the video programs, and after a few clicks it will go back to the "bloop" sound that confirms volume changes. Everything works fine again.
I have been at this all day and I am at wit's end. My google searches are getting way too long to be of any help. Any pointers or obvious things that I've missed in my caffeine haze would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
...SOLVED by switching to Catalyst drivers from open source.

if you're not getting an error message, describe what happens when you try to transfer songs to the ipod as best you can.

  • HDMI audio fails speaker-test, Radeon Richland

I've just put together a new machine and installed Ubuntu 13.10 on it. The system has an integrated AMD Radeon Richland APU. The Onboard audio is working fine (tested with headphones). The HDMI audio is enabled in BIOS, and it's listed in aplay -l and in the Sound Settings dialog. But it's not making a sound, and after many tests and possible fixes, I'm at a loss what to try at this point.
Perhaps the most telling indicator about the problem is the error message I get when I run speaker-test:
    speaker-test -l 4 -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:0,3
    speaker-test 1.0.27.1
    Playback device is hw:0,3

    Things I've tried already:
Ensure HDMI is unmuted in alsamixer
Update alsa to latest daily build. I'm now running oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms - 0.201402110705~ubuntu13.10.1 downloaded from launchpad
Update video driver from radeon to fglrx (catalyst 13.12). Had to write a custom xorg.conf file for this (see below)
Checked volume and settings in PulseAudio Volume Control - set HDMI audio to be the fallback output.
Updated grub as per this thread: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/864735

  • Upon startup multiple audio sources begin playing. I can't find the tab to kill them!

Having pages begin streaming audio upon startup AND not being able to find out where audio is coming from is frustrating almost beyond words ... it is hard for me to imagine this wasn't addressed with the first "tabbed" version. Sometimes I'm almost tempted to see if another brower has this handled. PLEASE FIX IT OR LET ME KNOW OF AN ADD-ON TO ADDRESS THIS. If the latter, I suggest you co-opt that feature into the next major release. AWOL sound is maddening. 3 youtubes + 5 podcasts + lastfm should NOT be playing at the same time BY DEFAULT just because the tabs were open on last shutdown. Further, I suggest *ANY* source of audio should easily found and jumped to to kill or mute.

If pages have embedded audio, it is not always easy to stop it. I have a bookmarklet that allows me to stop embedded audio if I click it on the page in question. If you are having Firefox open with the tabs from the last session and several of those pages have embedded sound, either turn them all off one by one or do not save a session with embedded sound in the pages. The bookmarklet is this:
    javascript:(function(){function%20R(w){try{var%20d=w.document,j,i,t,T,N,b,r=1,C;for(j=0;t=["embed","iframe"][j];++j){T=d.getElementsByTagName(t);for(i=T.length-1;(i+1)&&(N=T[i]);--i)if(j!=3||!R((C=N.contentWindow)?C:N.contentDocument.defaultView)){b=d.createElement("div");b.style.width=N.width;%20b.style.height=N.height;b.innerHTML="<del>"+(j==3?"third-party%20"+t:t)+"</del>";N.parentNode.replaceChild(b,N);}}}catch(E){r=0}return%20r}R(self);var%20i,x;for(i=0;x=frames[i];++i)R(x)})()
Add a new bookmark, copy that code to the location, and name it "No music or iframes".

  • How do I get Independent Headphone to be the default playback device in Beats Audio?

In the Beats Audio control panel (I own a Pavilion dv7-4051nr) the only option listed for Independent Headphone is default communication device. The only time I have been able to enable Independent Headphone for sound playback was through Windows Media Player (Tools>Options>Devices>Speakers>Properties). I thought the audio was superior and played louder compared to using the Speakers and Headphones as playback device for headphone listening. However, the next time I logged on and attempted to play a CD with Independent Headphone there was no sound output despite the fact that the Independent Headphone volume control on the taskbar indicated it was working. When I switched to Speakers and Headphones, sound was delivered to the headphones as normal.

Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • Known issue: Cortana does not play audio through the default playback device (Windows 10 Insider Preview SDK and tools, April 2015 release)

When getting audio feedback from Cortana on a device with multiple playback endpoints (e.g., a device with a headset and an internal speaker), the playback may occur on the incorrect device. For example, Cortana may not send audio to the default device

  • How can I change default iCal alert tones?  Basso is awful!

I am running iCal on a MacBook Pro using OS X 10.9.4
I've looked at previous threads and tried their suggestions of altering the default in the Library or using Terminal.   Neither of these seem to work in the new OS X, as the files have been restructured for iCal or placed in other directories.
Please help - I do not want to receive alerts with the horrible 'Basso' tone.   I can customise new events as I create them, but events from the cloud use the default sound (which is 'Basso') and I want to change that.

Make sure "All Day" is not checked and you can do it.
Update: I now see you want that as the calendar Events default. Sorry

  • How can I change default audio / sound output or remove the displayport audio option?

I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and while I don't have any of the number of issues that see to accompany that move, I've discovered a different one that is not necessarily related to it, but is irritating.
    2014 Macbook Pro Retina
I use a thunderbolt to displayport (AKA just displayport) cable to attach a Dell monitor to my mac at the desk.
Prior to this update, the mac ignored the display as far as audio was concerned (the Dell does NOT have audio built in).  But now it seems to think it does.
Moreover, it continually switches back to that Sound output in the preferences whenever I plug or unplug an audio source from the audio jack.  This is Annoying!
Is there any  way to either
    1) set the default to prefer the internal speakers / headphones instead of the DP?
    2) remove the Sound output for the DisplayPort connection (which is a false connection since the Dell doesn't actually have AUDIO)
    Thanks much

I found the com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist and Com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist, but can't make sense of either enough to feel confident in altering any entries there.  here's the SystemSettings one that seems like it might have something you could change, but...

  • I have an iPhone 5 and when I'm playing music I can't change the song or start and pause on any of the shortcuts, what can I do ?

When I'm playing music and am on other things and swipe the shortcuts up, I am in able to change the song or pause and play, the same thing happens when I have locked my phone.
I have to keep unlocking my phone and going into my music to change the song, this is very frustrating!
I've gone onto settings but I am unable to find anything that will change this?
    What can I do?!

I never use than switch and I had forgotten it existed but yes that was the problem.
Thank you I would have gone nuts. As they say there is no fool like an old fool.
    Thanks again.
