I just got an Apple TV (the newest black one) and I have an older Pioneer HD TV.  I noticed that I don't have a HDMI port on the TV and only a USB connection.  My question is, can I still hook up the AppleTV to my TV with other connection wires and will it still allow me to use my ITunes music, photos and Netflix with the same picture and sound quality?

The Apple TV will not work over USB, the only type of connection supported is HDMI.

  • Best Method For Connection - JDev Team Help

    Hi,
We are using a couple of different methods for obtaining a connection and pooling. I'm wondering what is the best method, though...if there is a preferred approach?
One approach is getting the ApplicationModuleRef from the request. We then release the amref as true/true or true/false (pending of if we need to maintain state), but we definitely try to release true/false whenever possible.
The other approach is using createRootApplicationModule. We then either release it back to the pool false or destroy it immediately w/ true.
Is there a preferred approach between the two? We are constantly struggling with inactive sessions that are not getting cleaned up when they reach our timeout limit which is causing severe memory issues with our application. Is one of our methods for obtaining the connection and releasing perhaps causing our pooling issues?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Andy Hamilton - TUSC

That is exactly the problem and with 100+ users on the system at one time our connection count gets large quite rapidly. The issue only occurs though with sessions released true/true...they are never reused, just new connections piled on top.
We are actually turning connection pooling on in hopes of it resolving our connection issues. Any idea though why if you release an amref true/true and then attempt to do a session.invalidate you would get this error:

  • What is the best method to connect Gateway FPD2185W External Monitor

    Hello,
I just bought a new Macbook. I would like to connect it to my larger Gateway FPD2185W external monitor. The monitor is maybe three years old, and has VGA, component, S-Video, and DVI inputs. Which type of connection would work best? I have a mini-DVI to VGA connector from Apple, but the display doesn't look the greatest. I'm still new to using the MacBook, so help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

There are some settings on the monitor that might be affecting how it looks when running from VGA. There should be a "tuning" function, also known as clock phase adjustment. There is an AUTO button located on the side of the monitor. Press it and see if it helps the picture quality. Also under the Video Adjust menu are settings for Sharpness and Noise Reduction. Those settings can often interfere with good picture quality, so you might try playing with them as well.
Of course, you could always switch to the DVI input for the best image quality, but that would require buying another adapter from Apple and also a DVI cable if the monitor didn't already come with one.

So "no" you don't need any more software on the Mac. Set it up like this:

Best way to connect my ATV?
My home theater system does not have any "video in" ports. The guy at Best Buy told me I could run a HDMI cable directly from the ATV to my tv for video and also run an optical digital cable from the ATV to my home theater for sound. Will this work?

Audio will come from both the receiver and the tv if you set your system up the way you suggested, you simply need to turn your tv speakers off (or down if you don't have an off setting)

When using a HDMI auto switch to connect two devices to a HDMI TV, the

Cable : HDMI switches expand the number of available HDMI ports on a high definition television allowing connection of cable boxes, Blu-ray players, and game consoles. A side benefit is that cable clutter is also eliminated by running a single HDMI cable to your HDTV from a switch and relocating the HDMI ports to a concealed location. The problem with most HDMI switches is that you have to either get up to push a button, or hunt for the remote control, to switch sources. The true mark of any great switching component is an ability to perform its function and remain transparent in its operation. This automatic HDMI switch is a plug-and-play away from offering everything you are looking for in an HDMI switch. Select a single output from up to three devices for signal delivery to your HDTV. Smart operation provides complete control for connect-and-forget operation. Powering on a device gives it output priority over the other devices. By powering down the device in use, output priority is returned to the last powered on device. Note: Auto switch function only works for components that do not output continuous voltage over HDMI port when turned off.

  • What Is The Best Way To Connect Ipod To Stereo Reciever With High Quality?

I recently purchased an 80 gig and am a newbie. I ripped all my music at around 280kbps to retain good audio quality when playing in my car and home theatre system. There are tons of accesories out there (docks, jacks, etc) which is the highest quality to connect my Yamaha receiver. I would think a connection to the bottom of my ipod would be of a higher quality rather than using the headphone jack. Any suggestions would be great. I was thinking about using the monster itv link but mostly for audio. thanks

OK - So now that you have all completely ignored the original question - in hopes of proving your manly-hood....
Does anyone have an answer to the original question....
"What is the best way to connect to a high end home stereo to retain the best sound?"
For sure any connection going through the headphone jack will be a big step back - enough so that you would easily hear a sound quality loss in doing so.
For the few of you who would like to argue/bicker/rant on the nominal sound quality loss....keep on doing so, but for those who actually have some respectable advice we would love to hear it.
For the record, I tend to hear just outside the normal human auditory range...
To help myself put it to rest already... a few years back I decided to conduct my own little listening test.
I took 6 different common ripping modalities (from lossless - to - 128kbps in both MP3 & AAC.... then transfered all of them in order to a blank. Used the same song for each - the song chosen opened with a few clean crisp bars of high freq. music, followed by an instant explosion/drop into a tight & low bassline.
The final cutoff that was achieved before I was unable to detect an audible difference was 198 VBR AAC. Having convinced myself that there was the ever sooooooo slight difference b/t 198 & 256, I went with my current ripping status of 256.... Just incase my audible range should become finally honed with age (yeah, like that is really going to happen) !
This test was run over a Yamaha DSP receiver, running at a constant 110w per channel (w/a max of 220w). The speaker setup was a full surround set of Klipsch Reference Series..... each speaker housing 2 x 6.5 woofer (each housing 2 x 1" Titanium tweeters) And sitting along side the 5 surrounds was/is a 150w continuous 12in. Subwoofer.
Now I am hardly stating that I have hearing as good as some of you extremely technically profound music enthusiasts out there, but for the majority of people making comments about sound quality, and lack there of - when played over a $120/40w Audiovox radio.... I'm sorry, but I would have to side on that of......"Hogwash, that you can hear a difference!"
So.... if possible would someone please offer some advice on a dock or cable connection that will allow us to enjoy the music we ripped at whatever
    so-called range we did!

  • HDMI Port not working on Lenovo G460 Win7-64bit

I've been trying to solve this for some months now.
I bought my lenovo G460 with nvidia M310 (with hdmi) this year and have not been able to get the hdmi port to work.
I have two lcd displays one in our lab and another one at home (LG 2361V-PF) which have hdmi connections in the back.
In the beginning I was able to get my notebook to work on the display in our office. However, now both displays (work+home) are not working.
I have tried to reinstall latest nvidia drivers as of 2010-11-02 (ver. 8.16.11.8990) from lenovo, completely restore Operating system and tried different hdmi cables.
I have even tried to use original drivers and also downgrade that to a lower version all with no luck.
I have even taken my LG LCD display to the LG After Service Warranty office and have found no issues wrong with the Monitor itself.
I am sure I have taken all the trouble-shooting methods into consideration so a simple question is...
    Is the hdmi port defective?
I will take my laptop into the Lenovo After Care service center this week, but before then is there anyone who has had this issue and solved it?  -->or is it just a hardware problem easily fixed with warranty replacement parts.
    Thank you

    ::Update:: ----------> Partially SOLVED
    Lenovo After Service Center Report:
       1. hdmi connection is fine
They said that it could be a software problem and that they would try to update the driver.
    Partial Solution:
Use Lenovo Original Drivers, for some reason NVIDIA newest drivers conflict with hdmi port on Lenovo G460 .
I restored my laptop to factory condition and tested the hdmi connection and it worked for a few seconds ...
my lcd screen started to flicker and my laptop flickers now when hdmi is connected....(A sign that hdmi is not really broken)
Will update solution when i get it to work 100%

  • How to connect TV with limited HDMI ports?

My Panasonic Plasma TV has 2 HDMI ports. I have been using HDMI 1 for a DVD Recorder and TV linked through HDMI 2. This gave me upscaled 1080p resolution on both.
I want to move TV to the Component ports to allow me to attach a Cinema system to the HDMI 2 port. This will give the neatest solution for the TV/DVD/Cinema remotes.
Is it possible to connect a Cinema system (5.1) to HDMI 2 as I understand that this will "disable" the Component Ports.
Prior to getting the Cinema System, as an experiment I have attached TV with component cables but the picture resolution is poor, I suspect it is only 480p. Is this to be expected?
I would like the Cinema sound for normal TV and for iTunes music etc. Is this set-up possible and how is it best to set it up.
If not how best can I meet my needs?

If you connect devices to the two HDMI ports you have on your tv it should not disable your component ports on the tv, although obviously you can only select one or the other. I don't see any reason that your component only uses 480p (since you are in the UK this would actually be 576p) unless the tv's component input is limited to this resolution. Have you tried changing the video output mode from the tv.
One other option would be to employ an HDMI switch, but be aware HDMI can be troublesome when ported through a switch, if you choose this route, ask here on this forum for anyone with experience of the switch you are considering before purchasing, not all work properly. I have heard the extrememac switch is OK, but I personally have no experience.
I thought that switching TV off for a while it would reset and set up on the newly found connections. However I have invoked the Video output scan from the  Remote unit. This went through all the options from 480p, 576p, 720p, 720HD and 1080p, which were all OK. There was one hiccup when the picture exceed the Plasma height but re scanning reset this.
The pictures are now in the highest quality and all the thumbnails are now visible.
I was experimenting with alternatives as I wish to avoid HDMI switches and also by using Panasonic Cinema system means all the remotes are compatible, if not exactly interchangeable.
I will now have to decide which units give me the best set-up.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Best Way to Connect MacBook Pro (without Mini Display Port) to HDTV?

    Hello,
Although I am fairly confident that I know at least one answer to this question, I thought it would be best to pitch it to the members of Apple communities, just to see if there is a better way to get to where I need to go. I have a MacBook Pro that I bought in July of 2007 for college. At this point, I know that it is fairly out of date, but I'm reluctant to throw down another three grand for a new one until I absolutely need to. Anyway, I want to connect it to my HDTV to play movies, games, etc. As this is an old model of the MBP, the Mini Display Port is not available. I do, however, have an Apple DVI port, as well as the (then included) Apple DVI to VGA cable/converter. Now, I know that VGA cannot transfer sound, but I think that DVI can. So here's my problem. If I create a bridge of wires to my HDTV, would sound come through? My idea is this: connect Apple DVI to VGA, then have a VGA to DVI converter, then have a DVI to HDMI cable, which connects to my HDTV. With all of those connections, however, I'm worried that something will go wrong along the way, and it won't work out. What I really need is an Apple DVI to HDMI cable, but I'm pretty sure those do not exist.
Anyway, I was just looking for any feedback that anyone has. Thank you in advance!
    Best,
    Daniel

    Hey tjk,
    Thanks for the response.
Do you have any recommendations for a potential set up? The audio output and Apple DVI are on different sides of my MBP, which is alright, I guess I can get two long cables to handle each. I was hoping to just have my MBP closer to where I use it, with a cord nearby plugged in on one side to the HDTV and resting near where I keep my MBP for when I want to use the HDTV as an external monitor.
With a converter like this, you can run video out of the MBP's DVI port, and miniToslink (optical) audio out of the 3.5mm stereo mini jack to the converter, then it will combine the two and output audio and video through HDMI to the monitor.
    http://www.supermediastore.com/product/u/apogee-dvi-to-hdmi-converter-spdif-opti cal-toslink-coaxial-input-output?utm_source=cj&utm_medium=aff&utm_content=HDMI+A ccessories
Otherwise, depending on the TV's inputs, for video you could run DVI to DVI on the TV, or DVI to HDMI to the TV. For audio you could run 3.5mm stereo mini plug from the MBP to RCA adapter on the TV. Toslink/optical is also an option.
