  • HotSpot and Tethering option

So iOS4.3 will have HotSpot function in GSM versions...I talked to AT&T, I currently have a Unlimited Data plan...If I want to get HotSpot/Tethering i will get the 4GB plan for $45...So I asked if I didnt like the HotSpot/Tethering and cancel can I go back to unlimited? They said No you get the 2GB plan...
Is that realy the case? Anybody cancelled their thethering plan?

Yes, that is true. If you change out of the (grandfathered) unlimited plan for any reason, you can't go back to it, ever...

  • IPAD2 ATT Personal Hotspot/Tethering not offered

I just spent three days with ATT pointing out to them that their website stated a Personal Hotspot would be available for the IPAD 2 with the release of 4.3. I directed them to the page that quoted it. It was a press release dated March 10. It shows the prices for Tethering. They are pointing fingers to Apple. I don't believe them! If you want the link I will email it to you. This post won't allow me to cut and paste the link to ATT's Website.
The day before I purchased IPAD2- I also called ATT and Apple to confirm Tethering would be available. Now ATT is denying that it never was in the plans. Apple Care folks are hand tied. They don't quite understand ATT's decision. There are many reasons ATT doesn't want to allow this. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan on my Iphone 4- If I purchase the tethering for my Iphone 4 - I have to forfeit my unlimited plan- GET THE PICTURE!. The Ipad is capable of tethering. I bought the IPAD2 -3G version for this purpose. Extra 130 dollars out the door.
If you had the same in mind- Let ATT know your frustrations. Thanks for listening

Thank you for your response. Verizon offers tethering/ Hotspot on some of their tablets. I personally demonstrated this before I bought my IPAD2. I understand what IOS4.3 offers on the IPHONE4. The IPAD2 is capable of the same. Apple even admitted it to me via phone conversations. They only sympathized with me after an hour of phone patches between ATT and Apple.
I don't want to tether my I phone. I want to keep it available for other purposes and don't want to destroy my "Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan". I do want to tether to my laptop. I don't really have an argument- I may have been mislead by what ATT stated. Let me copy this from their Web site. There is no assumption that one already owns an IPhone 4 or is it relevant. The following is a direct quote:
Let me know if this changes your mind? Thank you!

  • HotSpot Tethering - Bug / Unexpected behavior

I use the hotspot feature on my Verizon iPhone daily. I have an in-car traffic reader (on old iPhone that I've replaced) that uses WiFi to access the internet for traffic data. The iPhone 4 hotspot feature is cuasing me a problem. As near as I can tell, the hotspot broadcasts the WiFi SSID only for a short time, for just a few minutes right after enabling the hotspot feature. So my use scenario/problem looks like this:
    1. Get in car in morning, turn on hotspot
    2. Traffic reader device connects to internet using WiFi hotspot tethering
    3. Drive around and enjoy
    4. Arrive at first destination, exit car. Take phone with me into store.
    5. Phone is out of range of traffic reader, and traffic reader drops WiFi connection.
    6. Return to car
    7. Traffic reader is still not connected to WiFi becuase it doesn't 'see' the SSID broadcast
    8. Open iPhone settings, turn off HotSpot, wait 5 seconds, turn HotSpot back on
    9. Traffic reader reconnects to HotSpot, resumes parsing internet data for traffic.
Continuing to braodcast the SSID would fix this issue. Even if the broadcast were only once per minute, it would be more convenient than turn off and on the hotspot function just to reconnect.

I think you are running into the following issue.
    From: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756
"Note: If you leave the Personal Hotspot screen or put iPhone to sleep, iPhone only broadcasts the Wi-Fi network for an additional 90 seconds. If no devices join the Wi-Fi network during that time, iPhone 4 stops broadcasting your Wi-Fi network. You can start broadcasting your Wi-Fi network again by tapping Settings > Personal Hotspot."
So, if I understand correctly, you can leave your iphone on the the Settings --> Personal Hotspot screen, than it shouldn't stop broadcasting.

  • Will tethering work without tethering "option"?

Will tethering on iPhone 4 work without the more expensive tethering "option" from AT&T?
Isn't it just a cable from the phone to your iMac that does the trick?
I don't have an iPhone yet, just wondering...
    Thanks.

Tethering is a carrier feature and the option to tether will only appear in settings if your carrier supports tethering. Carriers charge for the use of this feature & yes, AT&T charges accordingly. You can tether either by bluetooth or USB cable. So no, its not a simple matter of connecting a cable. You first have to sign up for tethering.

  • Can I use hotspot tethering in iPad mini with wifi??

Can I use hotspot tethering in iPad mini with wifi??

You can use an iPhone (if your carrier supports it) as a personal hotspot for your iPad and use the phone's cellular connection to go online with your iPad - your iPad will see the phone as a wifi network.
If you are asking if you can share an internet connection from a wifi-only iPad then you can't, only cellular models potentially allow you to share its connection with other devices/computers.

  • Get iPhone4 hotspot tethering to iPad WiFi or iPad 3G?

can someone tell me if the hotspot tethering from iPhone to iPad is slower than using an iPad with built in 3G?

Since no one has done so yet since iOS 4.3 has not been released, it will probably be somewhat slower since there will be a wi-fi connection in between - not a direct 3G connection with the iPad, but it shouldn't be noticeable.

  • Lost Tethering option

Hello, first time I looked for the tethering option after upgrading my iPhone 3GS to iOS 4, and this is not available! Please take a look here:
    http://twitpic.com/2358ac
Did the Tethering option move to another menu? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
    Thanks

The tethering option is added/removed by the carrier update (the .ipcc file). On my phone (o2 UK) there was a new carrier update when I installed iOS4 on my 3G iPhone. Has yours installed the carrier update as well?
It is possible to do it manually but you need to download the restore package of iOS4 which includes the carrier file or the actual carrier file on its own... I'm not sure if thats an approved method of updating so I won't tell you where to get the files.
Hold down shift and click update in iTunes to select the location of an update.
    OR
Vodafone Greece have decided that tethering is no longer an option. Maybe contact them directly and see if this is the case.
Also, check if the MMS settings are still available - These were also updates in a carrier file. If these a problem maybe they won't be there as well.

  • 4s Hotspot tethering only works with USB and BT but not with wifi

    Hi,
XP sp3 - iPhone 4s with ios 5.0.1 - on Three one plan
Tethering with wifi works to a friends Samsung phone, wifi on the pc confirmed working with the apple store wifi, tethering with USB and BT works with good connection speeds on my laptop but when i try to tether with wifi it connects to the laptop at 54mbps and all appears well, even claims to have received a small amount of data packets, but no data comes to any browser. The iPhone reports 1 connection to the hotspot and stays connected with a non-pulsing blue bar after the first minute.
In the PC i have tried this http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-the-order-of-network-protocol -bindings
I've deleted my firewall (zone alarm) completely and turned off windows firewall to go naked surfing for a second even though they don't cause a problem with USB tethering, makes no difference
I've deleted the network connection numerous times
    "repaired" connection
    dissabled and enabled the wifi
turned off the wireless with a hardware switch and on again
    disabled bluetooth
    rebooted many times
    reinstalled itunes (latest)
loads more things i can't remember
This is causing me a nightmare. I've been through everything i can find online, been to the Apple store genius bar (genius appeared to have sub zero knowledge / interest as it involved a MS machine), been to a Three shop (legally not allowed to touch my PC apparently) and been to a Sony shop (laptop make, not their fault if my iphone doesn't work). All very frustrating.
Please help if you can! Any suggestion will be tried unless it involves sledge hammers or lakes, and only then for a few more days at most.

Turned off bluetooth on phone, turned off hotspot and on again, phone asked if i wanted to turn on bluetooth or go with USB and wifi only, said usb/wifi only. Still nothing. Rebooted PC and iphone. Turned on hotspot, pc seemlessly connects to network, still no data comes.
One odd thing is zone alarm asks me to "select a security zone for the wireless network at ip address: *******.0" every time and doesn't seem to remember the setting over sessions. When i get the status of the connection the ip address is *****.2 and default gateway is same ********.1 Not sure if that's anything.
Also getting a javascript error about an undefinded component (trustcheckermozilla) since i updated zonealarm but as i said even completely uninstalling zonealarm made no difference. I'll update firefox as well but tried with IE and still no data.

  • No tethering option visible despite being allowed by carrier

I have an iPhone 3Gs on the o2 network in Ireland. Recently, o2 enabled tethering on the iPhone with a selection of plans. As someone who purchased an iPhone 3GS when it first came out, I should be able to tether without adding anything on to my bill plan.
At first, I couldn't get the phone to download the carrier settings update - despite connecting it to iTunes and prompting it to check for updates in every way possible (and despite the carrier settings update popping up instantly with my friend's iPhone, purchased earlier the same day I tried it). Eventually, on the advice of o2 support, I restored my iPhone to try to get the update. After quite a lot of time looking at the screen, my phone finally restored, and the fabled carrier settings update prompt came. Unfortunately, after all that, I still don't have the menu option to tether. I contacted o2 again and they think it may be a handset issue.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas how to solve it?

Do you pay for a tethering plan? They may not be doing anything to 'block' it, but under normal circumstances, carriers have to specifically enable it, which usually requires an extra charge. If you DO pay for a tethering plan, make sure they know you have an iPhone and make sure your line is provisioned correctly. If you DO NOT pay for a tethering plan find out if this is something you need to subscribe to when you have an iPhone and again, make sure they know you have an iPhone.

  • Tethering options

I am nearly ready to buy an E73 and open an account with T-Mobile, but first would like to get some advice on tethering.  I understand that T-Mobile has never blocked tethering, and that the two most straightforward ways of tethering are 1) using a cable with the "One Touch Access" feature in OVI Suite, and 2) using WiFi with JoikuSpot.  As my plans involve a lot more than a single Windows (or Mac) laptop, i.e. desktop OS's that do not support OVI Suite, and may not even support WiFI, I am looking for more creative options.
What I'd prefer is a wired router that accepts the USB connection from the E73, in place of OVI Suite, and lets me attach my various computers via Ethernet.  Might such a box exist?  I'm willing to buy from Europe, or re-flash an existing router with a DD-WRT-like firmware to get this feature.
Failing that, it occurred to me that modern WiFi routers often have the ability to function in a repeater mode where they extend the functionality of an exisiting WiFi router.  So I think that buying a WiFi router with several Ethernet ports, connecting it to JoikuSpot on the E73, and connecting the computers to the router would also do the job, if a bit messier.  Has anyone tried this?
I would appreciate any feedback!  Thanks!

I would hold it here and suggest you to use bluetooth DUN(Dial-up networking), its pretty easy setting up DUN on a Mac and other operating systems. Remaining what you're intended to do is a lot messier and "not heard of stuff" as you have menitoned.

  • Upgrade has caused problems with hotspot, tethering, and "help"

I received notice that my Z10 os had an upgrade available, so I went ahead and upgraded to 10.1.0.2019.  Now that I'm on a new version my wireless hotspot as well as tethering features no longer work.  They worked the day before.  I have an unlimited data plan with data roaming.  Others in my org with the exact same phone and plan but earlier version os do not have this problem.  The error message for both features (hotspot and tethering) is that I need to subscribe to a plan that allows these features.  My plan is already unlimited data with roaming.  After investigation with the provider, they reported that my features had not been "enabled correctly".  They made some changes and these two features started working again.  This is all very suspicious and dubious since the features were working prior to the upgrade.
The second issue is that now I constantly have "help" menu pop ups telling me how to use gestures to navigate on my phone.  I don't want these but don't see where to turn them off.  I guess this is the default behavior of the new OS.  Apparently it introduced or modified some of the gestures.  Until I actually went in and executed each gesture, it continued to display the help menu.
I'd just as soon revert back to the old OS if I have to live with all this new unhelpful stuff.  I don't see a handy way to downgrade to a previous release either.  right now my phone is far less productive a tool than it should be or was prior to the upgrade.
While all has been fixed now, it still points to some unfortunate issues with new OS.

As long as you are using the current version of firefox Firefox 7 sync is part of the browser. If you use the old version Firefox 3.6 sync was an add-on. If you have the add-on it may be removed see [[uninstalling add-ons]]
    * also see [[how do i manage my firefox sync account?#w_adding-renaming-and-deactivating-devices]]_adding-renaming-and-deactivating-devices
Activating sync should not be affecting the look of websites or webmail pages, possibly it is a separate problem.

Have you made other changes such as turning off javascript ?

  • Hotspot Debug Option

    Hi all:
I have been trying to compile Hotspot alone with other part of the OpenJDK with the DEBUG=true option, and it doesn't seem to get me to the source code when I use dbx to debug the custom built java. I notice that there is one option in the make file that states -xdebugformat=stabs, and someone suggests to me that I should change that to -xdebugformat=dwarf. But I believe that -xdebugformat=stabs should provide enough debug information so that I could set a break point in source file. I compiled the openJDK to a different folder than the one source codes resides, should that be a problem?
Thank you for any comment you may have in advance.

Sounds to me like this servlet is executing some native code that does something illegal with memory, like a bad pointer access. That's often the cause of a segmentation violation and this kind of crash report from the JVM.
I would pursue the matter with Oracle, the vendor of your servlet, if you haven't already.
