No Hyper-V on windows 8.1 - any alternatives?

Dear All,
I have recently upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 and noticed that there is no Hyper-V with this. Hyper-V is available only with 8.1Pro, which is confirmed by MS Tech Support guys. The only option they gave me is to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro for $99.99.
I tried to search if there are any other alternatives - and tried VirtualBox & VMWare - but facing lot of issues and not really working.
Is there any other better alternative tool (like Windows VirtualPC2007) that can play Virtual Machines?
Many Thanks,
Sridhar

You do not state what issues you run into. Oracle VirtualBox and VMware Workstation are the only real competitors of Client Hyper-V. If you do not wish to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro, then Oracle VirtualBox is the cheapest solution.

    Hi ,

    thanks

Previously it has been blocked to install Windows Server in the VM and then add the Hyper-V Role.
However, it has always been possible to install Hyper-V Server inside a VM. (the free Hyper-V Server SKU)
The Hyper-V Server VM is fully manageable, but it cannot start any VMs.

I have had a few virtual machines that built fine... one I’ve been using to test with works about 33% of the time and fails with the same error other times.
I have tweaked the RAM and the # of Virtual Procs and nothing seems to consistently fix it.  Specifically I've disabled dynamic memory, set the RAM to 8GB and the number of procs to
    4. I've also downloaded the SharePoint ISO from multiple sources (MSDN/TechNet/Trial) thinking the installer was possibly corrupt - same issue.
At this point I'm thinking it is either an issue with Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 + SharePoint or else something specific to my hardware but it is terribly hard to troubleshoot an error that
is intermittent. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Cannot enable hyper-v in windows 8.1(EFI from bootcamp)

    Hi Guys,
I wonder whether anybody has the same issue as me.
Use boot camp assistant to follow the instruction to install windows 8.1 and failed at last step said windows cannot write into boot configuration data something
Find one remediation solution to delete the partition created by boot camp and create it from disk utitlity. everything went smooth and get windows 8.1 installed(Bios), can even enable the hyper-v without any issue
Find another thread talking about EFI boot. So try it with the way(need use gdisk to do some patching and finally need recreate bcd record). windows 8.1 installed without any issue, not sure whether it is EFI boot. But I cannot enable hyper v anymore. after tick the option in windows features and it restart twice and nothing happen. The hyper-v option still remain in windows feature.
Anybody has the similar issue and provide your valuable advice? Thanks a lot.
BTW, the hardware is rMBP 15", i7 2.3GHZ, 16G RAM and 512G SSD

    Hi TeddyIsSam
Encountered the same problem on my 27" iMac Mid-2010 (CPU i5-2500s)
I tried for hours/days and could not enable Hyper-V.
If i enabled hyper-v, windows would boot to black screen and could not be repaired without disabling hyper-v.
Found the problem. installing bootcamp from USB with always use latest EFI boot and hyper-v doesnt like it - at least on my old iMac.
Installing windows with old bootcamp style - BIOS emulation (or whatever apple call it) works OK.
non-EFI (or old bootcamp) is when you get 1-2 second of cursor flash in the top left before windows boots.
Unfortunately, i had removed my super drive DVD from iMac... so i could only install bootcamp from USB and this requires EFI boot only.
To remedy this, i used this process which was very, very time consuming, costs $ for winclone and not for beginners
    http://huguesval.com/blog/2012/02/installing-windows-7-on-a-mac-without-superdri ve-with-virtualbox/
However, i can confirm i can now happily run hyper-v with Windows 8.1. great performance. It boots in old non-EFI mode which doesnt seem to have any downside? except the 1-2 cursor flash and i had to manually install latest graphics drivers from ATI as bootcamp drivers we buggy.
Hope this saves someone a lot of time!!!
im assuming later generation Macs happily run hyper-v with latest EFI.

  • How to install hyper-v on windows 8 ?

How to install hyper-v on windows 8 ?
I want to install virtual PC but after some research I came to know that windows 8 no longer support virtual pc and it has been replaced by something called hyper-v.
    I just bought a Windows 8 laptop.
I tried looking into windows on / off features (in control panel) and there is NO hyper-V.
I know why I don't have hyper-V because after doing some research it seems like it is only available on windows 8 PRO.
    Here is comparison chart:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions#Comparison_chart
I have Widows 8 on my laptop (NOT Windows PRO).
Now in this situation, how to install hyper-v on my laptop ?
Also, will I be able to run windows 7 virtually on my windows 8 laptop using hyper-v just like virtual pc ? like switching in windows between OS ? If I cannot do this and hyper-v does not work like virtual PC then I don;t think hyper-v will be useful to
me at all and i don't wanna figure it out if it is not useful in any way ?

    Hi jeffcarter,
To enable the Windows 8 Client Hyper-V feature, our computer needs to meet the following requirements:
    1. Hardware supports Second Level Address Translation (SLAT)
    2. 64-bit Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise.
    3. 4 GB or above of RAM.
Therefore, it seems that your computer cannot install Hyper-V. Also, Windows Virtual PC cannot be run on Windows 8. Thanks for your understanding.
In addition, regarding how to configure your BIOS to enable Intel VT-X, you can refer to your motherboard’s operating manual or query the vendor support for help.

basicly saying you should try copy the iso, and mount that copy.

  • Hyper-V on Windows 8 why SLAT requirement?

When I saw that Hyper-V will be available for client OS I was very excited, and that would be my "No.1" reason to upgrade to Windows 8.
    Reading the Microsoft article
Client Hyper-V and their "declarations" like
"Client Hyper-V provides the same virtualization capabilities as Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012."
    or
"Because Client Hyper-V is the same technology as in Windows Server 2012, IT pros and developers do not need to learn any new tools or commands"
I thougt - Wow, I finnaly would have a single operating system to boot that would be a "desktop operating system" and all the facilities to work with Virtual Machines with server features... but this seems to be my biggest dissapointment
and I could not find any reason for this requirement as long as Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V will work without any problem on my old notebook without this SLAT requirement...
Is there any workaround, patch or any other way I could use the Hyper-V on Windows 8 without using third party software like VMWare or VirtualBox? or I have to continue to use mutiple boot OS'es depending on what I need to test... because I would like to
use an "desktop operating system" but I HAVE to use Hyper-V for my virtual machine environment... :(

I don't care about hypervisor type, I only care about the end objective to running another OS or two effectively responsive and effortless, while runnning a main host OS.
As for hypervisior type of Hyper-V, it's academic, ref
    http://virtualizationreview.com/blogs/everyday-virtualization/2009/06/type-1-and-type-2-hypervisors-explained.aspx
I would have love to see hypervisor in Window 8 for me.  I have long been using microsoft products as much as possible. I believe tehre is still a large base of users like to migrate to W8 from vista or W7 using existing Core 2 Quad PC ( still
    farily powerful and reliable platform)
Now that I resort to Virtualbox, it just means I would not likely be back in microsoft market for future Virtualization need.
I may not count much, but for sake of microsoft, losing entrance customers would not help grow its enterprise nor small business market.

  • How to specify only possible owner of the VM in Hyper-v cluster (Windows 2012R2)

    Good day,
We want to prevent the migration of
virtual machines between the cluster nodes in indows 2012R2 Hyper-V cluster.
How to specify only possible owner of the VM in Hyper-v cluster (Windows 2012R2) ?
    SQL clustering

    Hi Al_leont,
I ask if your using FOCM or SCVMM as you configure possible owners in different places. As well as possible owners you can also configure preferred owners, affinity and anti affinity groups and placement rules.
To configure possible owner in FOCM you select the VM you want to configure, then in the bottom window select the resources tab (change from summary tab). Right click the Virtual Machine Resource, then select the Advance Polices tab of
the popup window. You should then see the hyper-V nodes as Possible owners.
In SCVMM you just right click on the VM and select properties, then settings form the popup window.
Preferred owners, affinity and anti affinity groups, placement rules are configured in other locations or by PowerShell.

  • Hyper-V V2P Windows 2012 DC

    Hi All,
Currently my Primary DC and additional DC are running on Microsoft hyper-V, can i V2P Windows 2012 additional DC from Microsoft Hyper-V to physical server?
    Any preparation or concern?

Interesting - I don't find any references to V2P in the URL listed above.
My recommendation is to simply create a new physical if you really want to have a physical.  If you are following DC best practices, there should be no problem with DCs being virtual, though.  But in the amount of time it would take to convert
and fix up a V2P (I have not heard any good success stories about a clean conversion - always lots of post-conversion cleanup required), you could easily have a physical DC built.

  • S7-392 issue with Hyper-V and Windows 10

Hi, I upgraded my S7-392 to Windows 10, and as soon as I enable Hyper-V in Windows 10 and reboot, the screen gets stuck at the boot logo. The progress ring is spinning and nothing happens after that. I can login in safe mode and disable the Hyper-V, and the system boots normally. I tried this many times. Everytime I enable Hyper-V, I am unable to boot into windows again (until I disable Hyper-V). I also performed a clean install of Windows 10 pro on my S7-392, and the same problem persists. Any solution to this. This is really urgent and important. This is my primary development machine, and I need to run Windows Phone Emulators in Visual Studio. Thanks and appreciate quick help. Naweed

  • Is possible to install Hyper-V on windows 7 Enterprise ?

Is possible to install Hyper-V on windows 7 Enterprise ? if yes 64bit or 32bit?

    Hi Velavan,
Hyper-V is only available on Windows Server, Windows 8 and above or as a standalone Hyper-V server. However the client version on windows 8 and above will not allow clustering and so
on and is  great for development or training environments but not production.
If you are just looking to manage remote Hyper-V hosts on a windows 7 client you can download the RSAT tools and install Hyper-V manager and Failover Cluster Manager which will allow you to manage
    your remote hosts or clusters.
