No icmp reply from my catalyst 2950 switch

My switches is still operating but when i ping the switch, there isn't any reply. Expert please advice.

David
There are several things that might produce the symptoms that you describe. Without some more details it is difficult to know which one it might be. Some of the possibilities include:
- the switches may not have an IP address assigned. The switch will still do an excellent job of forwarding frames at layer 2, but without an IP address it can not respond to ping.
- the switch may have an IP address but there is some error in configuration of the address (perhaps a misconfigured mask, or a keying error in the address). This would not impact the switch ability to function at layer 2 but would not allow it to respond to ping etc.
- the switch may not be configured with a default gateway (or configured with an error about the default gateway). This would allow the switch to respond at layer 3 within its own subnet but not able to respond to anything outside its subnet.
- the switch may have its IP address assigned for management purposes, but the address may be associated with a VLAN which has no active ports and therefore is inactive and can not respond.
- there might be an access list assigned somewhere that is not permitting the ping.
There could be some other things. If you can provide some more details, like what kind of switches are we talking about, and some details of how the switches are configured we may be able to find better answers.

  • Catalyst 2950 switch

    Hello,
I am using a catalyst 2950 switch and connecting machines which have the operating system as TRU64 UNIX 5.1B (HP make DS25 servers) and WINDOWS XP Professional. The WINDOWS machines are getting connected on the network ( I am able to PING each other), but the UNIX machines are not getting connected on the network. The port LED on the switch is normal (GREEN). The netstat -r command on the UNIX machine shows default as defgw (/etc/routes) and the IP of defgw is defined in the /etc/hosts file. But there is actually no such gateway.
Please help me to get the UNIX machines connected on the network.
    Thank You very Much
    Best Regards
    S R Vijayan

I wonder if the Windows machines are configured to use DHCP? If they are configured for DHCP and there is a DHCP server that is reachable, then it explains why the Windows machines have reachability to each other. If there is not a DHCP server available then the Windows machines are probably taking addresses in 169.254 (which is the default for Windows when it can not acquire from DHCP). This would also explain the ability of Windows machines to communicate with each other. Can the original poster clarify what IP addresses the Windows machines are using?
Then the question becomes how are the Unix machines configured? Are they supposed to use DHCP? Is so is the DHCP server reachable? If not how is the interface on the Unix box configured?
I also think that the suggestion about verifying whether the switch is configured with more than one VLAN is an excellent suggestion.

  • SNMP on Catalyst 2950 switch - possible?

How can I add SNMP to my Catalyst 2950 switch? and what will this give me with regards to network monitoring etc. A lot of my networks go through this device and I what to get stats on port etc. I really hope you can help here.

    Hi Chandru,
Here's what you should do. Firstly, go to the following site which will give you a list of MIBs supported on the 2950:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00800d84cc.html
Then, open up the Cisco SNMP Object Navigator at:
    http://tools.cisco.com/Support/SNMP/do/BrowseOID.do?local=en
Within that, click on 'View and Download MIBs' and then select the MIBs you are interested in to download/view them.
As an example, you can get counters on memory pools from the CISCO-MEMORY-POOL-MIB
Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

  • Catalyst 2950 Switch flash_init error

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Cisco products and have a small home lab set up. I have a Catalyst 2950 switch that I would like to restore to factory defaults. Here is the issue I'm having and can't figure out.
I pull the power, telnet into the console port, hold the mode button and restore power. The boot loader (Version 12.1(11r) starts and says the usual message the system was interrupted prior to flash initialization (Paraphrasing here)
I get to the switch: command line, enter flash_init. Flash states it initialized and then all I get is a < with an underscore under it prompt. Anything I try to type comes up as bizarre characters and I can not get back to a switch: prompt unless I reboot the switch manually. Unsure of what to do here.
    Thanks in advance!

  • RARP Server for Catalyst 2950 Switch

Is there a RARP Server capability for the Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch? I know that Cisco Routers support an "ip rarp-server" command. Do Cisco Switches support RARP?

To the best of my knowledge, the RARP protocol is working with cisco 2950 switch and also it supports in most of the cisco products.

Well, I finally figured it out.  When trying to receive text messages from my iPhone pals, I would get a failure message and a suggestion to update my profile.  When I selected that option, the phone would sit for a long time trying to connect and then fail.  I went into my settings and was able to force an update.  Lo and behold, all of the backed up text messages started to down load.  It seems as though when I received the texts from my friends, the system was aware that I had not received then and they were held somewhere in the cloud.  Then they were continuously resent until I fixed the problem at my end.  They all downloaded over night and the problem has been resolved.

  • DHCP on Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch

    Hello
I need to configure my cisco catalyst 2950 series switch in order to act as DHCP server for devices connected to its ports.
Please say me, how to do that ?
    Thank you
    Narek

Please find the sample DHCP configuration for one of the VLANs.
    Interface Vlan1
    description Cisco DHCP
    ip address 10.10.2.1 255.255.255.0
    ip dhcp pool cisco
    network 10.10.2.0 255.255.255.0
    default-router 10.10.2.1
    domain-name mydomain.com
    dns-server 10.10.2.10
    netbios-name-server 10.10.2.15
    lease 7
A 24 hour lease is the default if left out and the netbios-name-server is WINS in the Windows world.
If you want to use DHCP server for other VLANs as well create similar DHCP pools and assign the DG to the corresponding VLAN interface IP.
    HTH, rate if it does

  • ICMP reply from network address

I've run into something interesting that I've not seen happen before. When I ping one of my network addresses 172.29.0.0, I get a reply. The source is an IP on another network, say 172.28.0.1.
I expected to see something odd going on with arp, but then got onto the router for the 172.29.0.0 network, and tried to ping the network address from there. The odd thing was that I got responses from many of the hosts on the network.
    Something like this:
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.29.0.0, timeout is 2 seconds:
Reply to request 0 from 172.29.50.102, 4 ms
Reply to request 0 from 172.29.4.1, 4 ms
Reply to request 1 from 172.29.50.102, 1 ms
Reply to request 1 from 172.29.4.1, 1 ms
Reply to request 2 from 172.29.50.102, 1 ms
Reply to request 2 from 172.29.4.1, 1 ms
Why is this working the way that it is?

This is documented in section 4.2.3.1 of RFC1812:
    (2) SHOULD silently discard on receipt (i.e., do not even deliver to applications in the router) any packet addressed to 0.0.0.0 or {, 0 }. If these packets are not silently discarded, they MUST be treated as IP broadcasts (see Section[5.3.5]). There MAY be a configuration option to allow receipt of these packets. This option SHOULD default to discarding them.

  • AAA with Catalyst 2950 switch

I have a Cisco ACS 4.2 running on Windows 2003. Authentication is working fine for various cisco devices like routers, VPN concentrator etc.
Today I added a 48 port L2 switch as a AAA client, the authentication works fine. However I see many failed login attempts from this L2 switch with the user "C"
    Message-Type: Authen failed
    Caller-ID: async
Authen-Failure-Code: External DB user invalid or bad password
    NAS-Port: tty0
What is causing this failed login?

If the console port on the switch generating the spurious login errors is connected to a device offering remote access to the console port, then it's likely that some output from this device is causing the bogus login attempt.
If this device is an IOS router with a bunch of asynch ports add "no exec" to the line connected to the switch console port.

  • Block adding domain from the catalyst 4500 switch

Is there a way for me to block people from creating a workgroup domain from the switch? I only want one domain on my network. I do not want other people to connect to the switch and create a little workgroup.

short of blocking the TCP/UDP ports required for Windows browsing, there is no way to have cisco devices keep a user from connecting a PC to your network and configuring a new workgroup/domain. and this wont even stop them from doing it, this would just stop it from advertising and communicating with other workgroups/domains.
you could use 802.1x for authentication to connect a PC to a LAN switch port. this way only authenticated systems could connect to the network.

  • Cluster Management Software on Catalyst 2950

    Hi There,
I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to provide me with some help on getting the CMS software running on a Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch. I have followed all the instructions I could find on getting the software to load from the Switch, but it will not load. Can anyone help me?

  • IP Accounting on catalyst 2950

    Hi all,
Is there a way to find out traffic information from source IP to destination IP, like ip accounting used on routers, on the catalyst 2950 switch. My switch has the standard image.
Also what performance impact would it have on the switch, if possible to implement.
    Thanks,
    George

    Hi dukenukem,
no there is no way of interpreting flow information that way on a c2950. A c2950 is a L2 Device. Normally it doesn't really care about ip adresses.

  • Catalyst 2950 trouble

I have been trying to get a Catalyst 2950 switch to work for over a week now. I received the switches with no box or packaging and I was told that there were no previous setup attempts on it. I tried performing the express setup but the lights on the server don't seem to behave the way the instructions explain. I also was never able to make a connection between the linux server I am trying to use to configure the switch and the switch. All i received was the switch and nothing else. I have an AC power cord and I also found an RJ45 - DB 9 adapter if needed. I have looked through alot of the manuals on the cisco main pages and nothing seems to be working or clicking. Please help!

Results of pinging from switch to linux box and switch to switch were both 0%.

  • Catalyst 2950 bandwidth limitation

    Hello,
please, can anyone tell me if it is possible to limit bandwidth on Catalyst 2950 switch on per VLAN basis.
    Thanks in advance.
    Maxime Frolov

    Hello Amit,
I'll try to clarify my problem. I have a 2950 (Standard Image) with a giga uplink to a 6500. On the 2950 I have a VLAN composed of 4 ports. I' like to limit the use of the uplink link of this VLAN or at least of one port to 20%. Would it be possible on 2950 SI or I'll have to upgrade to EI whitch implyes hardware changes ? Or it just impossible on 2950 and I'll have to migrate to 3750 ?
    Regards.

    Any thoughts on this?
