No iDVD menu on desktop

When I double click on iDVD icon ( in Dock or in Apps folder ) iDVD shows
on Menu Bar at top of screen and window opens with "open project"
"new project" and "open tutorial" choices. But when I select any of those
three, the window goes away but nothing else happens, no iDVD menu
appears. The program doesn't freeze, I can still pull down 'file' and select
"new project" etc, but with same results. I have sucessfully used iDVD 3 or 4
times in the past few months, the last time was about a month ago. This is the first time I have tried it since then. I have tried two things: I put the iDVD preference file from the library folder in the trash. And I copied the iDVD
application from my Mac HD to my internal 200 GB drive and tried opening it
from there. No change. I am a novice so I am flailing around here. Any help?

My standard list of things to do first...
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Reboot your Mac.
Yours is certainly a new one!

  • Image size and dpi for iDVD menu custom background?

I created a custom background for my iDVD menu. When showing
on my TV, part of the words and image is cut off on each side, even after adjusting my tv picture between wide screen and standard screen.
What is the correct size and dpi to make a photograph to use as a background
image in the menus? This may have been answered before, so I apologize for posting the same question, if so.

iDVD will try to downsize the image to work, but your TV often will overscan with the result being edges clipped off. The amount of clipping can vary, so the "TV Safe" settings will typically be the center 80-90% of the image. So, if you add a border that makes the image 10-15% larger, that should display the whole image. For example, if you had a 150 dpi image that was 640x480, you could put a 10% border on it so the final image was 704x528.

  • Is there a way to get my iDVD Menu to the beginning of my movie on the DVD?

Is there a way to get my iDVD Menu to the beginning of my movie on the DVD?

Go into the Map mode and make sure there are no items in the far left hand bin.
If there is something in that bin drag it out, save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.  To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good and you can then burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    Help?

Try adjusting the start and end point in iTunes Info window for that particular track:
However, before committing to a disk burn save it as a Disk Image and play it with DVD Player to make sure the edit in iTunes was carried out in the final product.  It doesn't in some instances.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • After upgrading to OS 10.10 some fonts appear blurry. Specifically top menu bar, desktop icons, mail

After upgrading to OS 10.10, some fonts appear blurry. Specifically top menu bar, desktop icons, mail and Safari. This only occurs after the computer has been running for awhile, not immediately after startup. I'm running an iMac, 20 inch, Mid-2007 with the following graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB.
It's not a huge problem, just darn annoying. Thoughts anyone?

    Hi,
Please note that this upgrade related problem would very likely be what has been covered by the support document at the link below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537
If you also find any files named to include MessageSorting (which would mean you once have upgraded from a version of OSX earlier than 10.4, which is clearly the case for you), remove those, also, but never restore those.
Often this is all that needs to be done, but you might then need to force an overall reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index. Note the special instructions when forcing the reindexing of IMAP or Exchange accounts in the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
This will force the reindexing of all the POP mailboxes and all On My Mac mailboxes. With regard to any IMAP accounts if you have any, the practical result of this action of removing the account folder, is that with the IMAP account still set up in the Preferences, Mail will connect to the IMAP server and create a new account folder, and while doing so will index the messages in the mailbox folders of the IMAP accounts on the server.
    Keep me posted.

  • Putting multiple chapter-marked movies under one IDVD menu

I am currently making various instructional videos for a company and I want to fit 4 separate imovies that are chapter-marked under 1 idvd menu so I can fit this in 1 Dual layer DVD . Any answer can help. Thanks
    Macbook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I assumed the OP had tried that and it failed..
I asssumed he was using the 'Export from iMovie' approach that only gives you a way to add one movie to an iDVD project.
Anyway, we should have him covered.

  • IDVD menu items greyed out? Help!

Hello, i recently bought an external DVD drive for my mac mini ( unfort, I bought it used for good price, and didn't realize until later that the mini didn't burn DVDs. Its a combo-drive unit). Anyhow, after installing my external DVD drive, I figured id try out iDVD for the first time. I opened up iDVD '08, and for some reason almost all my menu items are greyed out!
The items i can access through the menu bar are: New, Open, Quit, and the 4 buttons ( create project, Magic iDVD, etc)
The items i CANNOT access are pretty much everything else! : About Idvd, Preferences, Check for updates. It seems to me if i cant access "Preferences", something is seriously wrong.
Any ideas why these items would be greyed out? Maybe some options aren't available until i get rolling, but "About IDVD" and "Preferences" should be available at any point.
    Thanks in advance
    Darren
P.S. A little more info: The external DVD drive ( LaCie d2 16X DVD-RW Firewire, Product # 301120R) does apparently work. I was able to burn a simple test disc with a slideshow. So I do know the DVD drive works and can burn discs. Anyhow I'm wondering if IDVD somehow checks the computer drive ,sees its a Combodrive that my mac mini has, and therefore glitches somehow? Only thing I can think of?

Thanks for the tip. Now i realize i have another problem. There is no icon for my external DVD drive, like yours shows in the screenshoot. If i go to SYSTEM PROFILER, and look under Hardware>Firewire, sure enough the LaCie drive appears there. So the Mac is apparently aware of it. But there is no icon on my desktop. I unplugged both the power and Firewire cord and then replugged it in, and still no DVD icon appears on the desktop. My external Harddrive appears on my desktop..i wonder why the external DVD drive would not?

  • Can i add a recorded imovie voiceover to idvd menu

I recorded a voiceover in imovie and want to add it into my idvd theme menu.  Can I do that?

Yes, this can be achieved by exporting just the audio from iMovie (but this will export ALL the audio, not just the voiceover). You can also copy the voiceover from the project's package contents folder. I'll explain both methods for you.
    Export the audio only:
From iMovie's menu select Share > Export using QuickTime
In the panel that opens, for Export choose Sound to AIFF
Give the file a name and save location (say, Desktop)
The exported file can now be used in iDVD (I'll explain how later)
    Copy the voiceover:
In Finder, locate your project in the Movies/iMovie Projects folder. On an internal drive, these are in your Home folder. On an extenal drive they are at the top level of the drive.
Right-click (or Control-click) on the project name and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu
The voiceover recording will be listed in the package contents folder, named Voiceover Recording xx.caf (where xx is the number ascribed to the recording)
Copy then Paste the .caf file to your Desktop
I need to open iDVD to refresh my memory on the layout and naming of items, so will post back shortly on how to use the voiceover in an iDVD theme.

  • How to add more drop zones or movies in an idvd menu

I was building a dvd in idvd and ran out of drop zones to fill but I couldn't figure out how to add more drop zones.
I tried different templates but I could find none that had more than 12 drop zones.
Then I was adding movies to the main menu and idvd refused to allow more movies added when I reached 10 movies. It said that the template did not accept more movies.
I tried a few other templates and could not get it to accept more.
I don't want to add submenus because the movies being used do not lend themselves to being put into different submenus.
Is there some way to add more than the default drop zones in an idvd template and to add more movies in a menu without having to use submenus?
    Thanks for any advice.

I couldn't figure out how to add more drop zones
Sorry, the templates 'are what they are'.
I don't want to add submenus because the movies being used do not lend themselves to being put into different submenus.
You need to figure out how to work with what is available.
If you want more freedom, buy Apple's Final Cut Studio and learn to use DVD Studio Pro.

May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • No drop down menu in Desktop & Screen Saver

I just transferred everything to a new Macbook Pro (2011 model) from my old one (early 2010) model, and when I access Desktop and Screen Saver to look at my background images, there is no longer a drop down menu for fitting the images to screen, even though I could do so on my last Macbook Pro with the same custom images I'm using now.
    Any ideas?

Okay, it's resolved.  For some reason, having the Custom Wallpaper folders in my actual Desktop & Screen Saver library directory did not work, so I moved them to my User/Library/Pictures directory and now it works fine.
But it would be nice to be able to keep desktop backgrounds in the same default directory as all of the other backgrounds...

  • Can I use an iDVD menu theme w/ toast 7.0 video content?

    Hi:
I am fairly new to making DVD’s. I recently had some super-8 movies converted to iDV format. I imported the footage into iMovie and was able to align an existing soundtrack and get everything exactly the way I wanted it. When I converted the movie to a best-quality QuickTime movie, it looked great too! However, when I tried to burn a DVD on iDVD with this same QuickTime file (not using the 'Share' button), the movie came out very pixilated during scenes with any motion whatsoever.
However, using toast 7.0, a dvd I made looked quite excellent in comparison, using the same QuickTime file.
My question: would it be possible to use the nice-looking toast 7.0 conversion of the video file in iDVD so I can use one of the themes I like in iDVD? What I would like is one of the older iDVD themes where the menu has a projector showing some clips on a screen.
I am wondering if this would somehow be possible by burning a disc image and swapping the video data. I appreciated any response from a knowledgeable source. I suppose I could just use the toast program without the theme I like as a worst-case scenario.
    Thanks!,

What I always do is first edit the movie as you do in iMovie. Then pass it to iDVD to add the menus etc. Then I always press 'save as a disc image' which puts a rendered file on your desk top. Then when ever I want to put that film on to DVD I just drag that image into Toast and that puts a copy on DVD. I'm not sure why you need at any time to convert to quicktime.
ps. - 'Save as disc image' is under file in iDVD.
I think this is what you are looking for. Sorry if I have mis-understood the question.

  • Second iDVD menu

How can I add a second menu in iDVD.
    Meaning this is the order:
    Video
    Main-Menu
    Video
    Sub-Menu

    Welcome to the forums.
Just to be sure we understand what you want to do; iDVD can do these things:
    - you can autoplay a video when the disc is first inserted into the player.
    - after the autoplay, it will return to the main menu
    - you can create a sub-menu the user clicks to access a second set of videos
    - a user can manually click the videos on the sub-menu in the order they choose.
    - menu buttons and the menu background can contain video.
