No iDVD on my imac

I've just bought an iMac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53) but there is NO iDVD on it. So how can I get it or how can I burn a movie onto a disc without iDVD? Thanks

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are NO realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.  ( NOTHING else comes close.)

How do i reload only iDVD on my imac without the rest of ilife. I only want to reload iDVD on my imac and not all of Ilife. How can I do this?

Use the iLife disk and select to do a custom install, then choose just iDVD.

After using iDVD, can my iMac burn a DVD ?
I mean how do I know whether my disk drive can write/burn DVD ?
Mine is a 24" iMac bought some 5 months ago.
    Thanks

Assuming your mac has at least 25 GB's of available hard drive space on the boot volume and an S-Drive as opposed to a combo drive; the latter only reads dvd's while the former both reads and writes to dvd, then you should be able to, yes.
But follow the iMovie> iDvd Tutorial/s first.

Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.

  • I do not have iDVD on my iMac  and would like to create a DVD

when I purchased my iMac at Christmas there is not iDVD on it.  I want to know how to burn to a DVD from iMovie.  Is it possible to ge iDVD installed ?
If not then please guide me how to burn to a DVD from iMovie 11.  Thank you

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • Cannot find idvd only new iMac

cannot find idvd on my new imac, have looked in apps.

    Good question, shame it's gone.
It's possible to re-install it if you've got a Snow Leopard back-up, although I haven't tried it myself:

  • Where is idvd on my iMac with lion?

I can´t find iDVD on my new iMac with preinstalled Lion.
How do I make DVD´s from iMovie?

You don't have an iMac PPC if you have Lion.  Lion only works on iMac Intels.
And yes Kenneth is correct.  The only way to get iDVD on a Mac that shipped new after July 20, 2011, is either demand it from the place you bought it, demand it from AppleCare, or purchase iLife '11 on DVD.  It is not available on iLife from the App Store either.   Apple stopped selling Macs with iDVD prebundled on that date.  Link to

  • How to install idvd on new imac

My iMac did not come with iDVD pre-installed. How do i download it either from the apple store or from some third party site?
    Please help me out thanks!

There is no way to download it. If you want it, you can buy the retail iLife 11 disk version which includes iDVD - either at the Apple store or online resellers. I purchased it because I use iDVD extensively and wanted to make sure that I'd have a way to reinstall if necessary.

  • Dual Layer Dics from iDVD on iSight iMac

on the iLife page it says that iDVD supports dual layer disc on a Powermac. but Since the new iMacs have dual layer burners does this mean iDVD will happily burn dual layer dvd's?

You do not have to make your movie size smaller. As long as the content of your movie, the iDVD menus and submenus is under 120 minutes, and you choose 'High Quality' or 'Professional Quality' setting in iDVD's preferences, you can burn to a single layer DVD. iDVD automatically compresses the data to fit.
Be sure to use a good brand of DVD disk, such as Verbatim, Maxell, Taio Yuden. Many people have had problems with store brands, TDK and Memorex.
Burn at a slow speed of 4x or less.
I have burned many movies to DVD; most were around 25-30 GB in size, but some were 60-100 GB. All were under 120 min, and all burned fine.

  • HT1338 Having trouble installing iDVD on my imac G5.

I have the iLife 05 DVD that contains iDVD. I have a imac 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 with a DVD (read only) drive. I have an external LG Super Multi DVD Rewriter. The external DVD drive works with the imac but in the system profile says under burn support "yes (not supported)".
Any ideas on how to get iDVD to load?
    Thanks.

Hello, can I assume it's Installed, but just won't Burn because the Internal Read Only?
Two ways to go, use iDVD to burn to a Disc Image first to later use Disk Utility to Restore it to a DVD.
Or try the HPfurz.sit.hqx hack here...

Thanks for the information! Take to make another question: assuming that locate a copy of iDVD /, what software can perform a similar function to that of iDVD7?
In reality - there are no option.
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • I can not find Idvd on my iMac, and I have Apple USB super drive

Where can I get IDVD from, I can find updates but not the original file. I bought my iMac last year with the Superdrive but was never given the IDVD programme

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • IDVD on new iMac

I just purchased a new iMac and much to our chagrin there isn't iDVD.  We create slideshows and want iDVD back.  I have the iLife '08 install disc from my prior iMac.  Can I do a custom install?  When I try to do so, it still looks like it will not allow me just to install iDVD.  How do I go about getting just iDVD?

  • Can I copy iDVD from my iMac to a Macbook?

My son deleted iDVD on his laptop, I have the application on my iMac, is there some way to copy from my computer to his computer?

The problem is iDVD 'parts' (like the themes) are located in several locations on your hard drive. If the missing iDVD version is exactly the same as the version on your computer - you MIGHT be able to make it work but simply copying the application.
What happened to the install discs that should have come with your son's computer?

  • I burned home movie in idvd on 2010 iMac and plays fine there but not on 2008 macbook pro. someone mentioned vlc and codex needs?

I created a movie in imovie and burned it to -R disk on my 2010 imac. It plays well there. But when I tried to play it in my 2008 macbook pro it would not play. what I got was two folder icons that said audio and visual and when i clicked on those it brought up several lines I couldn't understand. I did get the audio but not the video.
Apple said the Pro was beyond applecare which I knew but I thought it was iLife issue. They said it was not---that it was a Pro issue. I heard something about needing download of VLC and something about a codex. Not having much of an idea of what I was doing I downloaded a VLC thing and the disk played audio and video. Once. Today it will not play. So that is where I am stuck. Can anyone help please?

    Hi
Does the DVD play on a standard DVD-player ?
If so - then the Pro doesn't need anything. Most probably the problem is due to
    • Cheap brand of DVD used - Memorex and NoName known problem makers - I use Verbatim (only)
    • Burn Speed not set down - I do to x2 - and to select BEST is not a good choice at all as this will be same as Highest = Lot's of burn errors
If DVD plays OK on the other Mac - make a Copy BY USING Disk Util tool and do not forget to set down the Burn Speed !
