No image - screen is black
I just installed iLife 08. I opened an existing project, and the screen is black. If I play the title, I get audio, but no file shows video. Any ideas what might be wrong?
I also just bought iLife today and installed it, and am having exactly the same problem. When I go into the map, I see all my stuff there, but there is no picture or buttons on the main menu - only sound.
If I replace the background movie with another movie, I still get the same thing. Sound with no picture.

If I touch camera icon, the screen turns black instead of capturing image. Let me know how to troubleshoot?
Try closing the Camera app:
1. Double-click the Home button to reveal the Task Bar
2. Hold down the Camera app for a second or two until you see the minus sign
3. Tap the minus sign to close app
4. Tap area above Task Bar to return to Home screen
If the above doesn't solve the problem, do a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider -

I am running Arch on a Dell Latitude E6500 with Xorg, nouveau, and Gnome 3. The graphics chipset is identified by lspci as "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98M [Quadro NVS 160M] (rev a1)". So far, everything has gone swimmingly with the integrated monitor. Today, I tried to connect an external monitor via DisplayPort. I initially connected the monitor with the system booted and logged in graphically. The external monitor did not receive a signal, so I ran xrandr in an xterm to see if it was being detected. As soon as I ran the command, the laptop screen went black. On a reboot (this time with the DisplayPort cable plugged in from the start), the boot process stopped at the end of the systemd messages (ie, the boot was successful, but X did not appear to start). Connecting to the system via ssh from another machine, I set DISPLAY=:0 and ran xrandr:

So, X does appear to be running, but isn't actually rendering to either monitor. I noted that there is no "*" next to a graphics mode for DP-1, which I took to mean that no mode was selected.
I then ran "xrandr --output DP-1 --auto" in an attempt to wake up the monitor. This had no effect on either monitor (I still had the boot messages on the integrated monitor, and a blank screen on the external), but running xrandr again showed that the default 1920x1200 mode was selected:

Googling has turned up a number of people having issues with DisplayPort, but in these cases the external monitor simply needs to be enabled (xrandr --auto, a BIOS setting, etc). Has anyone experienced this situation, where the working primary monitor stops working?

Last edited by Gavster (2015-01-25 17:00:50)I got a displayport -> HDMI cable to try the laptop with my television. This worked seamlessly, with X auto-detecting the new monitor and correctly enabling it with a default of 1920x1080 (interlaced). I also was able to change it to 1280x720 (progressive) with xrandr. Since the monitor I originally tried with straight displayport also has an HDMI input, I tried the new cable there and again was met with success. I'll mark this as solved with the likely culprit being something very strange with my displayport cable (I had ruled the cable out since the EDID was properly reporting the monitor model and supported resolutions).

Screen goes black on 867 Powerbook . . .
Looking for some advice.
I have an 867 titanium PB which was running 10.5.6 when my problem started. Yesterday the screen went black, although you can see a ghost image of the desktop in the right light.
Things I have tried:
Rebuilt permissions
Verified disk
Zapped the PRAM
switched to another user account
Booted off an OS X install disk
Hooked up an external monitor to the PB and found that the second display works fine, so the PB video board seems to be working.
Updated to 10.5.7 (no difference)
I also tried to boot off an OS X install disk to access the hardware testing tools, but the PB screen is too dark to tell what is going on. Don't want to accidently erase the drive trying to run a diagnostic.
When I hook the PB up to an external monitor and turn on "Mirror displays" I can revive the PB screen by changing its resolution to the normal setting. Then, both monitors will work fine. And the PB screen is at its expected illumination.
But when not hooked up to a second monitor, the PB screen will go black at some point. If I try to reset its display resolution without a second monitor, all I get is a brief flash of the screen at full illumination, then it returns to black instantly.
Question: Am I dealing with a system corruption issue, a failed monitor backlight, video board, failed clock battery which can't hold onto the monitor illumination settings, or something else altogether?
(It's actually my teenager's PB now so he'll be bummed if I pronounce it dead . . .)

ThomasI think your inverter board might've flown south. Thats what happened on my PB the screen would go on for a few seconds and the it would go dark, so I would say that is most likely the problem.

I updated a program today everything was working fine yesterday and now today I was updating PLAY a music engine program it seems to have caused the mac to go crazy. I also updated VE PRO 5 another music program. Everything has gone crazy. It turns on but then then the screen goes black after a while 5-10mins. I managed to get the crash report.
Why is the graphics card all of a sudden effected by program updates.

Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...

Adobe rep tried to make Premiere CC (2014) work on my PC and now my screen remains black!!

I am trying to solve this issue that Adobe Representative Sarthak Girdhar has caused. Approximately three days ago, I used Adobe's online chat service to help get my trials of Premiere CC 2014 and After Effects 2014 working on my Windows 7 Ultimate operating system. I had a friend build the computer for me and it's fully specced out to handle 4K, 64-bit software, etc.
BEFORE I reached out to Mr. Girdhar, I updated my Windows 7 Ultimate operating system. It was only when that didn't work that I reached out to him!
To make a long story short, Mr. Girdhar had me connect via TeamViewer so that he could run some tests and what not. Since I am a sole-proprietor, I continued doing work on my laptop while I waited for him. Towards the end of the online session, he said he was going to do something to the drivers for my GPUs (I run dual ASUS GeForce GTX 780Ti 3GB GDDR5 GPU (x2) in SLI Configuration) and, the next thing I know, the screen is black. I know the computer is on and running because I can see the fans spinning and a number of lights on on the motherboard. As per the attached image, Mr. Girdhar claims that I need to contact Microsoft "and along with it install the updates for your OS because I saw that your OS didn’t even have Service Pack 1 installed."
What do I do now?!?!@Try:

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Yesterday stopped working camera application turns on but the screen is black. It does not work too flashlight. It is gray in the control panel. Maybe somebody know what happened if I need to return my phone service warrants.

To troubleshoot issues with your iPhone camera, please follow the steps below.
Camera
Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

Green images pixelated with black when opening in CS6
Hi there,
I have just come across a puzzling problem.
I am editig some images of furniture I have taken. All images are OK apart from green ones? When I open them in PS CS6 they are havily pixelated on screen with black. When I save the image for web, the preview that opens up, then image is fine again. It seems to be just an on screen, in PS problem.
Any idea how to solve this, it's very annoying!

JohnIt's AMD that have been doing the tweaking/correcting. Catalyst 13.1 can be problematic for any version of Ps that uses OpenGL although you may not have exposed the problems until yesterday. Your example image shows the bug where a pixel with red component of zero is displayed as completely black.

Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice. Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily. From what I understand, this is due to bad capicators????? Found a reconditioned 2005 eMac on line. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned eMac without problems???...with regards to software applications. Old eMac is running 10.4.11 and reconditioned on runs 10.5. Suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Might want to make sure both units are not affected. This is the range of serial number from the now-defunct Apple Repair Extention Program for USB 2.0 eMacs:

A "collapse" is more indicative of a video cabling issue, but the bad caps produced such a wide range of problems that it's hard to sort through them.
If the old eMac is a USB 2.0, which a 2004 unit should be, the HD should exchange with the new one. As the last of the eMacs shipped with Tiger, the new computer should have no probelms with a 10.4 boot volume on the old drive. You can upgrade to Leopard one you have hte new disk in place.
NOTE: Takeapart and reassembly on the USB 2.0 must be done "just so" or you can permanently damage the power switch. Instructions for the USB 1.1 takeapart are slightly different , and the power swtich damage is usually caused by people using the older instructions on a newer eMac.
If you are not up to the takepart nor can you find a local computer tech who knows these. consider taking the drive out of the dead computer(won't make much difference if you damage that one as it's dead), buy an external Firewire enclosure, and put the old drive on it and use it to move data to the new computer. Then you can leave the external attached as a backup drive.
Is the new one a 1.42Ghz model? They have been practically trouble-free around here. We have one and it's been rock solid since we bought it as a refurb in Jan 2006. The 1.42G has the advantage of a Core Image-enabled video chipset, the ATI 9600.
And all USB 2.0 eMacs can, with modern memory modules, support up to 2G of RAM. -

I'd like to save the light meter image screen in a jpeg or tiff file.
The exemple "Light Image metter" is great but i can't save the colored
image screen of emission, when i save the output image, it's always in
black and white.

May be you can post a example, because i'm lost. When I right-click on my image indicator, i create a methode, then GetImage but the cluster is only a cluster of numeric (whitout image wire type)

Iphoto screen turns black--- sometimes

I'm using Iphoto '11
version 9.2 (626)
MAC OS X Version 10.6.8
Some of the images don't show up at all but come up with a gray dashed border around white background. When I double click this, instead of an image appearing, the screen in iphoto goes solid black. In looking at the slides on the bottom nest to the "info", 'edit", "create" links, I can see something, at least a small image with some color but can't make out what it is; but there is something there. Then I scroll down in Iphoto and arbitrarily chose another (summer 2006 Feb 14 2006-Jul 20, 2006). In this photo, I double click and the iphoto screen goes black. Another from the same camera, taken same day will appear, I click on "edit" and the image remains and is editable. The screen is black but I can see the image in that slide bar at the bottom of the screen. I scroll along the images at the bottom and most react as expected but every now and then I click on an image and get the screen black.
Now within these same photos the mystery continues. In most of the "normal" images I can select and drag onto my desktop or put in a folder on my desktop (or anywhere else I designate). But, with these particular images that turn the Iphoto screen black I cannot move them. I tried to email them, they did not appear when the email was received and opened. No photo.
Any help will be most appreciatedOption 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

After installing the BIOS on Hp G72-a10EM screen is black.
Hello everyone. I have a problem on my laptop. When I upgraded the bios and successfully installed the laptop rebooted but the screen stayed black while everything else seemed to be working normally. I tried to connect an external monitor to the VGA output on the external display I've got a normal image and the windows are raised normally.
I tried to get back into BIOS setup by default but i still do not get a picture on the screen of the laptop.
If someone had a similar problem or can help in solving this problem, I would be very grateful.Hey @Zhiksy ,
Did you check the inverter or LCD cable connection page 133 of your manual. As if it is showing on a monitor it is not the processor graphic card or Ram.

IPhone 5 screen is black, when I connect to ITunes it says "to allow access please respond to your Iphone". Impossible with a black screen, does anyone know what the prompt is?
