No internal microphone levels in garageband

Would anybody know why I sometimes get no internal microphone levels in garageband? It seems random. I can open a file that registered internal microphone levels one time, and it may show nothing. I'm just trying to do a basic voice recording for a podcast. I'm clueless about this one.

Is the track record enabled?

When I'm using skype, it is impossible for me to adjust the level of the internal mic. In fact it is going on its own to the max level every time, which creates an echo on the computer of the people I'm talking to.
When skype is off, I can then set the mic level where ever I want .

I wish I had an answer for you. The reason I'm responding is that I am having the same exact issue. What version of Skype are you using? I'm using the latest Beta version. The only reason I am using that is because I wanted to try out the iSight with my mom and she has only a PC.
Anyway, I am wondering now if it's a Skype issue. Does anyone have any clues?

open garageband, select new project, click on any track (piano,etc,) when the window opens, drop down track and delete the track that is there. Then drop down track and select basic track
go to system prefs>soundselect input, select internal mic, and use the slider for level control.
go to out put and check mute to keep from feeding back.
unclick output mute to lisyen to platback
youcan then burn to disc under share, or send it to Itunes, and burn a disc or put it on a flashdrive

MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 - Internal Microphone Not Working

Hey everyone, I've been having trouble with my internal microphone on my 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro every so often. In the Sound preferences, Internal Microphone (Built-in) has been selected on the Input tab, the input volume is on full and the audio port has been set to Sound Output so the internal mic is the only input source. However, there is no signal detected by the input level bar. There's also no input on Skype, which is the main thing I use the internal mic for. I do have an external microphone by means of a headset, although I have to set up a small mixer to have a headphone and microphone input and this takes some time, which I do use but sometimes, for convenience, I'd rather just be able to use the internal mic and use some headphones in the built-in output.
I can't figure out why it doesn't seem to activate, usually a restart activates the mic but I haven't had much success doing this today, and really, the mic shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
If anyone can shed some light onto this, please do!

You may try a PRAM reset. If that does not resolve the issue, make an appointment at the Apple store Genius bar.

My new iMac's internal microphone is not being recognized by other applications (such as Skype or rosetta stone)?

I just bought a new iMac. I'm having trouble with the internal microphone. I went to systems preferences> sound, and checked the input levels. The computer shows recieved sound from internal microphone and a USB connected microphone. However, no one on Skype can hear me, and microphone isn't recognized while using rosetta stone. Does anyone know what could be the problem with my internal mic?

I did get an answer to my problem. It was specifically with skype and Rossetta Stone. I had to re-install the apps and then do the general upgrade. It fixed the problem. Works fine now.

I use my internal microphone on my MacBook Pro very often, especially in programs like GarageBand, Audacity and Photo Booth. However, yesterday after attempting to use Skype (for the very first time) my internal microphone does not work properly in any program. The only time it responds is when I tap the area directly above the microphone.
- I've already checked the settings in System Preferences
- I deleted all files associated with Skype
- I've tried holding the "option + command + r + p" while starting the computer
- I've delete the "com.apple.soundpref.plist" file in the user library
Has anyone else encountered this problem and knows of a definite fix, or can someone at least offer any other suggestions that may work?

Sounds like a hardware problem. Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. If you have Apple Care or your computer is still under warranty, call them up and let them deal with it.

The drivers for the laptop are located here. select Vista and Driver-audio. The Vista driver should work. You can uninstall the driver from within the Device manager. Start --> type devmgmt.msc and the device manager will open. Locate the HD audio device and right-click it and update the driver.
After that is done go to Control Panel and Sound and the recording tab up top. Check to see if the microphone is grayed out. (not grayed out means driver is properly installed). The microphone should also have a green checkmark next to it. It is now a matter of selecting the microphone then selecting Properties to enable the microphone and then test and adjust the input level. Look at the tabs (listen,levels and advanced).
Had you considered trying Windows update or the Realtec website as a drivers source?

Looking at your system information you could have one of two possible audio cards:
Conexant HD audio or the RealTek HD Audio
The fact that you couldn't install the RealTek HD audio driver indicates to me that you don't have a RealTek audio card. Check your device manager and look at your sound card and check to make sure which audio card you have.

If you in fact have the Realtek audio card, I would download and install the latest, greatest HD driver directly from the RealTek site:
Accept the agreement, download and install the first one on the list. Maybe it has been updated to fix the issue you are experiencing.

Not something I've ever done, but I found a 9-year-old article from MacWorld -> http://www.macworld.com/article/1041790/tapetocd.html - that explains it a bit. Apparently the only software that you need is GarageBand and a hardware interface. Just Google "copy audio cassette to mac" and you'll get tons of hits.

First check System Preferences/Sound - check all the settings to make sure mute is not selected.
Repair permissions & restart.
Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
Open up GarageBand if installed then, open a program (optional).
Quit out of the GarageBand app.

Internal microphone not working on iMac

My Inernal microphone is not working and I have tried the usual remedies:
1.) Reset the NVRAM/PRAM by doing the Command+Option+P+R
2.) Checked the Sound Preferences to make sure the Internal microphone is selectyed, Mute is unchecked, etc...
3.) I tried to do the Apple Hardware test (AHT) but that did not work. It just booted up normally when I held down the "D" key.
4.) I don't have Skype or Garage Band operational and I am not using any external microphone.
Any suggestions? I saw a post about deleting the "plist" but I left the post and couldn't find my way back to it again.
If I jack up the Input volume all the way I do see bars registering (on and off) on the Input level scale but no amount of shouting at the microphone generates any new bars. I just had the hard drive replaced with a new Hitachi hard drive but the iMac seems to be working fine other than the internal microphone. This al started when I tried to do facetime but the other party could not hear me.

It looks like your mic has really ended its life, however that happened. The bars you describe indicate that the mic input is open (and subject to interference, but no good signal from the mic itself).
You will easily agree that any - costly - repair won't be worth it. See if you can get an inexpensive external USB mic, or one of these external USB sound "cards" that offer an analog mic input, plus a mic.

IMac (Late 2009) internal microphone not working

My internal microphone is no longer working in any applications. Under System preferences and Sound I have selected Internal microphone and the input volume is set to max but I get no readings from the input level, it's dead. I have no external microphone installed or anything else connected to my iMac. I installed Teamspeak client on my iMac the other day and when I did the microphone calibration I got for some reason readings on the input level when i gently knocked on my iMac, but for some reason I didn't get anything when i tried to speak...go figure.
Any ideas?

No Internal Microphone

Ever since installing Leopard, my iBook's internal microphone has not worked. Though not the reason for doing it, I've since reinstalled Leopard, but the problem persists. For reference, the mic worked perfectly while Tiger was installed.
I've checked System Profiler, it sees my microphone, as does the Sounds preftab. However when in the "Input" tab, there is no response in the Input level field.
Can someone please assist in troubleshooting this problem? Thanks!

I have the same issue regarding the internal mic. It worked intermittently for a while after resetting the SMC (shut down, take out battery and hold down the power button for about 10 seconds, then restart), but now it's completely shot. I ran a hardware check that returned no problems. The weird thing is that when I plug in a USB mic I can pick up audio. What is going on?
PS- Oh and the latest 10.5.4 update did nothing to help the situation
