No Internet Access For Four Hours!

Hi Folks,
Yesterday afternoon at approximately 2:00pm, I lost my internet connection. I thought it would just be a 'blip' that would correct itself in a couple of minutes. How wrong I was! My connection was down for just over four hours!! Because of some critical work I had been doing beforehand, I went into panic mode. I checked the loss of connection on two separate machines and the problem was for real. Incidentally, if it hadn't been for Network Magic Pro installed on both PCs, I would not have known what had happened. I used to rely on the flashing blue icon in the system tray but that only indicates network activity.
The longest I've ever lost my internet connection before this occurrence was about one minute and this was caused by interference from a neighbour using the same wireless channel as me. Easily remedied.
Although I live in Bracknell, I suspect this problem was more widespread but I have no way of knowing.
Did anyone else witness this problem?

    Rcshnoor nailed it, everything will depend on how they manage their data connection once the laptop is connected.  It is perfectly feasible that they will have no issues with this new connection.  However, there is nothing stopping the user from going above and beyond the data usage cap currently sufficient for the phone by itself.  We cannot presume that any estimations on new usage will be accurate either.
    Users should always be aware of the reality that revolves around data usage and the devices that consume them.  Its no different than installing a 2nd waterline/hose on your house.  Sure the hose will be fine if you remember to turn it off when you are done, but no one is going to stop you from letting it run all night if you forget.

    You're saying you don't back up your phone regularly? You should ALWAYS back up before updating your phone. That said, try resetting first: hold down the home button and the power button for at least 10-20 seconds until you see the Apple. Hopefully you can then try to perform the update again. Start doing backups if your data is important to you.

  • No internet access for vlan devices

    Hey folks, 
    I'm new to cisco and have only recently started study for my ccna. In preperation for this i've gotten my hands on a cisco emi 3550-48 port switch so i can play and test some scenario's. 
    Now, I've setup a couple of vlans (200,201 and 202) and i've assigned them to fa0/3, 0/5 a0/7 respectively. i suppose it's irrelevant which ports are assign, they are just the ports i've assigned while typing this. 
    I know the cisco forums are full of people saying the intervlan routing isnt working and it just turns out to be the static route on the router in the end but i have set all that up and i can not get internet access on my vlan networks. The wierd thing is the switch itself can ping the internet no problem. 
    Here is my setup : 
    I've assigned ip addresses as follows :
    vlan 200 - 10.10.200.254/24
    vlan 201 - 10.10.201.254/24
    vlan 202 - 10.10.202.254/24
    I then enabled intervlan routing by issueing "IP ROUTING"
    At this point I configured the VDSL modem/router (zyxel F1000) on IP Address 192.168.1.2/30 and I configured interface fa0/1 with the following commands : 
    interface fa0/1
    no switchport
    ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.252 
    no shutdown
    I then set the default route using : 
    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.2
    Finally I configured three static route's on my Zyxel F1000 modem/router to send traffic back to my three vlans using the gateway 192.168.1.1
    As i said above, If I plug into fa 0/3 (vlan 200) and lets say I give myself an ip address of 10.10.200.20, 255.255.255.0 and gateway 10.10.200.254. I can ping the othe vlns and devices on the other vlans no problem but bot for love nor money can i get onto the internet. For clarifications sake my dns is set to 8.8.8.8
    Stranger still is the fact that the switch can ping hostnames and ips on the internet no problem. Has anyone got any ideas what could possibly be wrong?? I'm completely stumped.

    Hey guys,
    Thanks for the speedy replies. I have been trying this for about 2 weeks now and last night after posting this message to the cisco forums I got my hands on an old Sonicwall router. I decided to test the connection using this as I suspected that Zyxel router is buggy. 
    I setup a PPPoE connection on the sonicwall and set that up as my default route matching exactly the ip settings listed above and it worked immediately. 
    I knew the setup I had ran above was right it was just tormenting me that it wouldn't work. Turns out its the piece of crap Zyxek VDSL modem.

  • Internet Access for PDF Question

    Hello,
    I was using IE until an auto update last week. I am now using Firefox. I have a business site that I go on to complete report 'tasks'. When I click on the task, it should open the report in the same page. Now it is opening the report in a new PDF window. I can fill in the report, but when I click on 'submit', it goes no where. Saving the report and emailing is not an option as it needs to be submitted through the system. I have repaired, checked for updates and unistalled/re-installed adobe reader 11 as well as updated the adobe flash. The switch from IE to Firefox was recommended by the business site's support. Chrome/Safari are not available options. I have 'enabled' the adobe add-on in Firefox and allowed access to all sites in Adobe preferences. Any suggestions on how to 'enable internet access' from the site to adobe would be appreciated... thanks

    On Firefox, the adobe reader plugin for the 'portable document format' is set as default. I just changed the three adobe acrobat tabs under applications from 'use adobe acrobat (in firefox)' to 'use adobe reader' (default). The issue is my task/the pdf link is not connecting to the internet to send the data back. The task opens and I can fill it in, just cannot submit it back. This is the 'security warning' info that comes up:
    'This document is trying to connect to:
    file:///index.cfm?event=event.testPDFCompatibility
    If you trust this site, choose Allow. If you do not trust this site, choose Block.'
    Obviously, I click 'allow' but then this pops up:

  • No internet access for laptop when another device is using wifi

    we have both an airport and an at&t "2wire" modem. The airport is plugged into the wall outlet, the modem is connected by a wire to the airport. The modem has a wifi network and that's the network that we connect each of our apple devices to (laptop, iphone, a couple of ipads). when the ipad or iphone is using the wifi, we can't get internet access on our laptop. we just get an error message like "another device is currently using your wireless." any idea why this is happening? the only way to then fix the problem and get internet access on the laptop is to turn off the wifi on the other device, unplug and then plug in the airport, and restart the laptop. 

    Thanks for the update. If you want to use the AirPort Express to extend the range of the wireless network provided by the 2Wire modem (actually a combination modem & wireless router or gateway) that is possible. What you would have then is a single network with greater range to cover your entire home (hopefully.) This should also resolve the issue with not all of your network clients being unable to connect.
    Since you have the two network devices already interconnected by Ethernet (wire), you just need to configure them both for a "roaming" network. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details.

    GuysNeed some assistance on providing internet access at a branch site for clients. Any thoughts and suggestions welcome and appreciatedWe have a number of branch offices connected over ISP managed MPLS network, any-2-any. I am looking at implementing some kind of internet access at the branch offices, either wired or wireless. We manage all the L1 and L2 connectivity at the sites, and the L3 side at our hub offices, of which we have 2, mainly for internet traffic etc, which isnt provided by our MPLS ISPCurrently all internet traffic for all sites goes to our data centre and is routed out through our firewall. Routing isnt an issue here, its more the best way to set this up securely.My initial thoughts were to set aside a whole bunch of ports on a seperate PVLAN that would connect the clients to the network (I am not conerned about the clients talking to each other, as long as they cant reach the local vlans). But the problem may lie at the firewall end, as I will need to specify specific hosts for port 80, 443 traffic only. Would a seperate DHCP scope, of say a /28, allowing 16 hosts only be an idea? Then I wouldnt have to mess around with firewall changes for different hosts all the timeThanks

    I bought a touch for a friend for Christmas - he does not have tv/internet/telephone service - he gets internet on his Toshiba laptop through a Verizon aircard thing he plugs into a USB port. I could not figure out a way to get wifi to work on the Touch, or to even get the Bluetooth working so he can have wifi while near the laptop. Is there a way to just purchase internet access to the ipod so he can have access anywhere he goes? Or does anyone know a way to get the bluetooth to work from the Toshiba laptop to the iPod Touch?

    The iPod will not tether via bluetooth to a computer for internet access. You should be able to turn the laptop w/aircard into a wireless access point (like a router) so the the iPod can connect via wifi to the internet. Just Google "laptop as a wifi hotspot" and you will get many hits.

  • I use linksys to get internet access for laptop; can I easily hook up my linksys to a relative's computer so I can use my laptop at their house?

    I was thinking I could use an ethernet cable and do the same sort of hookup on another person's PC as I have done on my own PC to allow me to use my laptop when I visit.     The only way I know to disable it is to go to Help>Check for updates.... Let it do it's thing then click the "preferences" button and deselect "Automatically check for Adobe updates."
    I'm not positive what happens if you try this without internet access...

    How do I remove any internet access from my kids accounts?  That's not an option in parental controls.  I'd like it to only be available in our account that we have to let them in.

    I do not use parental controls (no minors in my home) but application and internet controls are available in parental controls on my system.
    That's not an option in parental controls.
    I assume that blocking access to the browser(s) would do what you wish.
