  • How does Internet access work once I leave home?

Do I need to subscribe to a wireless broadband deal- such as BT's Openzone- in order to access the Internet on my macBook when I'm away from home ... or can I depend on dialling my ISP via a phone socket? How does Internet access work once I leave home?

BT Openzone looks a lot like T-Mobile wireless here in the States. I've got a T-Mobile account and password. When I go into a location that has TM, I open up my MacBook and look under my AirPort menu icon to select the TM network. Then I enter my account name and password and go.
Of course TM isn't everywhere, just as BT's service isn't. When I'm in a location that doesn't have it, how I connect depends on what does exist. I always travel with an ethernet cable because many hotels don't have wireless but do have ethernet connections. I've not had to resort to modem service is more than 5 years.

  • No Internet Access with Windows Mobile 6

I am running a wireless network in my home. I have been unable to get my new AT&T Tilt running windows mobile 6 to access the internet. The Tilt does connect to the wireless network, but no internet access is available to the phone. The wireless router is a BEFW11S4 V2. Any ideas on what I need to configure to allow internet access?

  • Time Capsule - how to gain "over-the-internet" access from Windows 7!

    Hi guys,
I've been fighting for such a long time with my Time Capsule. I have no idea how to gain access "over-the-internet" on a PC (Windows 7) which is running on  another network. My Time Capsule is set up with my Macbook Pro at home running Lion OSX, and i have internet connection. My brother who also uses Macbook has no problems connecting to my Time Capsule - through finder (connect to a server). But how do I gain "over-the-internet" access to my Time Capsule through a PC (Windows 7) from my office? Is there please someone who can guide me step-by-step, how to gain connection to my TC through a PC? Or maybe just an explantaion what has to be done on the PC before this thing can work out! This was the main reason to why i bought Time Capsule - besides of the Time Machine function. I also have an iCloud account (earlier Mobile Me), if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

There is no way to do it from windows direct to the TC.
It only presents AFP to the WAN side. And most ISP block SMB from internet access due to risks. There is AFAIK, no suitable AFP protocol utility for windows at the moment. If you google and find one, be aware it probably will not work to your satisfaction anyway.
You must use a Mac to access AFP but even then it is not a secure protocol and I would recommend against it anyway.
So basically if you had have asked before purchasing, I would have said, TC is unsuitable product. It is a backup drive for a Mac. It is not a NAS.. it is not designed for remote access by any computer other than a Mac. It does not support any other file protocol to the WAN interface.. and no secure protocol even there.
A NAS with Time Machine extensions from QNAP, Synology, Netgear all are designed for web access and are far more suitable. Researching a purchase beforehand is always worthwhile.
Anyway, your choices are.. return the TC and buy something more suited to the job.
Or if return is now impossible sell the TC on ebay.. etc and do the same thing.. buy a more suitable NAS.
Or buy a cheap mac mini (even second hand) and use that for communications with home.
Or, replace your current router with something that includes vpn. This is actually a good and commercially sound decision. VPN is generally used by business to connect to remote locations, because it is secure and will allow the greatest flexibility of connection. How hard or easy depends on the current setup. I would recommend a combined modem router with vpn server if you have adsl. Or for cable you can find plenty of routers with combined vpn. You can also use those for adsl if your ISP allows pppoe with bridged modem. The TC will have to be bridged as well. For other broadband it might be harder to find the right kind of box.
Once you setup a vpn you can access it from work using the appropiate vpn client in your work computer.

  • TS1398 my wifi is showing connected but i am not getting internet access.  When  in the settings wifi settings  you can see the wheel or timer spinning but never a check mark like my other iPad.

my wifi is showing connected but i am not getting internet access.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Welcome to BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Do you have a data plan with your wireless provider that supports internet browsing and messaging?
If you do, is your signal uppercase or lowercase when you're having this issue? Have you tried reinserting your battery?

  • Accessing my windows pc from home on my Mac pro

    Hi,
I have a new mac pro and have worked out how to connect to works VPN. However I am now stuck. I want to be able to access my work pc (windows) from home (mac). I know how to do this using windows to windows, but would be grateful to know how to do this from a my mac at home to windows pc at work via the vpn.
When I say access my work PC, I mean I would like to be able to have a window on my home mac that shows my work desktop and then access files, applications etc as if I was sitting in front of it in the office.
    Many thanks in advance.
mac pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Fantastic! many thanks for the info. Im so close I can almost smell it
I am connected to the works vpn and have entered my works computer name in RDC, however when I click connect I get the "the client could not connect to the computer". I have read some destructions regarding putting the domain name in after the computer name etc. However I have no domain name, just a work server address. I have even tried adding the vpn on demand domains to see if that helps but it doesnt. Have I missed something? Is there another step I need to do as its via a vpn?
Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  • How to configure Redundant Internet Access on WIndows Server 2008 R2

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine running in my basement.  I have an application installed on it that calls a web service out on the open internet on a periodic timer.  Everything works great until my ISP goes done.
For redundancy I got a second connection into my basement from a different ISP.  I want to now configure my service to use the first ISP until it goes down and then automatically switch to the second ISP.
I have installed a second NIC card into the server.  However, I need some help in configuring the redundant set up I am after.
For example it isn't clear to me  if these separate NICs should be configured on the same subnet?
The other complication is that this server is infact the DC for my domain.  Not sure if that complicates things or not.
I do RDP into the server remotely currently, so there is another potential complication (would need to enable that through both ISP router/nic.  However, please note that other than the inbound RDP traffic, I am only interested in having the "outbound"
web service traffic redundant at this time  - that is I am only using the machine as a client in this scenario).
I have read up on Multi-homing and just feel this is overkill for what I am trying to accomplish.  All I want is for the internet to still be reachable from the machine via automatic switch over if my primary ISP goes down.
Thanks in advance for any and all help in configuring this correctly.

    Hi Rob,
    Thanks for posting here .
TMG could help to implement internet redundancy feature with using maximum two ISP connections:
Planning for Internet service provider high availability

We can get more detail introductions form TMG/ISA forum If are interesting in this feature.

Deploying other dedicate third party devices that support this feature is also a good choice .

  • Watching Rented iTunes Movies in Locations with No Internet Access

After I rent/download movies from iTunes onto my MacBook Pro, will I be able to access/watch those movies if I bring my laptop to a location that has no Internet access (no hotspot, no wi-fi, no nothing)? I know the rentals are good for 30 days and I have 24 hours to finish a movie once I start it, but I'm not sure if I need to have continuous Internet access to watch them even after I rent them.

You only need an internet connection if you're going to transfer the rental from your computer to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod.  You can watch it without internet access, like in an airplane without WiFi.
Any other questions are probably answered here:  iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ), http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657

  • IPhone 4s connected to home wifi but won't allow connection to internet etc...

We recently received a new modem from the cable/internet company and although the iPhones indicate they are connected to home wifi they won't connect to facebook, yahoo, google, update email. Basically we are using our data in our home with a working internet. The computers are working fine. I have spent a few hours with the cable company and the phone company trying to solve this issue. They both say it is an issue with the other party....we have not update to the new OS yet... could this be a setting issue within the phone not responding to the new modem? Should we try updating the phones OS?
my kids are running through their data...any advice would be helpful. I have already had to pay for the unsuccessful help of the cable company.

  • New to Networking - Verizon Wireless Broadband Internet Access

    Hello,
Just setting up my home network with a router and printer server.  However, when I went to set it up, it is looking for a cable to connect from the laptop to the router.  I use a Verizon Broadband wireless card that I insert into the pcmia slot on the laptopr, therefore, no wires involved.
Will this work with the router or do I need the cable connection for it to work.
Also, in the setup it asks not only for the IP address (which I think I found) but also a subnet, gateway, dns, etc.  Any suggestions on where I can find this info.
Or is this all just explained somewhere in an easy guide when using a wireless internet access card.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the info.  Since I live in a rural location, the only options I have are either slow dial up with MSN or the broadband access card in my laptop with Verizon so I guess I will be limited to the internet only on my laptop if I want faster access.
One thing, though, when I open the program for the verizon card (VZaccessmanager), it shows a symbol for linksys as an available network even though I didn't provide the ISP, etc. answers.
The router that I am using is the WRT54GS and and a WPS54G print server.
And, yes, the ISP question was being asked during the final stages of router installation, along with the gateway question, etc.  Now that this isn't going to work with the access card, do I need to answer these questions?
Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • "Unidentified Network" -local access -- when connecting vista 64 bit to WRTP54G router

Windows Vista will not connect to wrtp54g router (9 outta 10 times). States that it is an "Unidentified  Network", and i have no access to the internet, or xbox 360. I cannot enter the router settings either
There is no problem connecting directly to the modem and then the internet.
Device manager shows no problems with Nvidia network controller.  Xp Pro had no issues connecting to internet or home network.
I reset the router, no help.  ipconig/release  then- renew -- no help.    (vista has all updates),  Firewall on / off-- no difference
tried another wrtp54g -- same problem
    Please Help ?

I got into the interface -- turned off firewall-- allowed local network, but no internet--so no use.  I dont have a wireless card in my desktop -- so didnt connect wirelessly.  Have xbox 360 running on wired connection also -- it has always connect without problems.  No changes in interface cured the problem.
I did try the registry entry fix, givin in another help window - supplied by microsoft-- called "Windows Vista cannot obtain an ip address from certain routers or from certain non-microsoft DHCP servers". (Article ID :928233 - link  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233)--- have rebooted 3 times and has connected and recognized the router every time. Crossing my fingers that its a permanent fix.
Hopes that helps others out there

  • Unidentified Network appears Windows 7 pro reboot and stops NW access

I have a Dell T3500 workstation  which had Windows 7pro problem is whenever  I reboot NW access fails. In Network Sharing there are 2 networks "Local area " and "public Network". I have to disable the NW Adapter and enable
each time to get rid of the "public  Network" and recover NW access.
    How can I fix this?

    Hi viren84,
Please first take a try with the network troubleshooter:
Using the Network troubleshooter in Windows 7

Regarding Unidentified Network, that because the network are indetified as public, which is not safe enough:

  • Unidentified Network appears every Windows 7 reboot and stops NW access

I have an HP Pavillion PC which had Windows Vista Home Premium with all patches up to date. I upgraded to Windows 7 last weekend and ever since every time I reboot NW access fails. In Network Sharing there are 2 networks "Network 2" and "Unidentified Network". I have to disable the NW Adapter and enable each time to get rid of the "Unidentified Network" and recover NW access.
    How can I fix this?

    Hi,
You can also try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
    1. Bypass the router and connect to cable modem directly for a test. Do you need disable Local Area Connection now? If so, please let me know. Otherwise, please upgrade the router firmware and then connect to router again.
    2. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine and router (If it has).
    3. Upgrade the NIC driver.
    4. Restart the computer to Safe Mode with Networking to check the result.
    5. Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically
    =======================================
    a. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter".
    b. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties".
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    c. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties".
    d. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
    e. Click "OK".
    f. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties".
    g. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
    h. Click "OK".
    i. Reboot the computer.
    What's the result now?
    Thanks,
    Novak
