No internet access when Parental Controls are enabled.

I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard(OSX 10/5.8). Until recently Parental Controls worked flawlessly for my kids accounts. Within the last few weeks something happened and now the kids can't get to any websites with Parental Controls enabled. Every URL we try we get a "can't connect to the server" message in Safari. Switching their accounts to standard fixes the issue so it is definitelyt a Parental Controls issue. I created a new account and see the same issue if I make it a managed account. Nothing has changed with our setup. i.e. no software upgrades, router changes etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same issues. I've tried some of the work-arounds that people reported as working for them, but they haven't solved the issue for me. I don't know if this is a good clue, but here is the error log from /private/var/log/apache2

If I disable parental controls, safety mode safety mode will turn itself off. But if parental controls are re-enabled, safety mode will turn itself on. If I then try to turn it off manually, it says that it's been disabled, but it still stays on.
The only parental control that's enabled is the time limits. There are no other restrictions enabled. There is no other filtering software installed. It is doing this on three separate machines.
This is a problem specific to Firefox. Chrome and Internet Explorer do not exhibit this behavior. For the moment, they are using Chrome, as I do not wish to turn off parental controls.
This is recent behavior, within the last week or so. Prior to this, it didn't have any problems at all. I don't have an exact date when it started, but it sounds like it was one of the last few upgrades.
Is there a configuration setting to tell Firefox to not look at parental controls?

IChat stop working with Bonjour when parental control was enabled

I'm wondering if someone could help me out with this issue.
I am running Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
When I enabled Parental Control, iChat stops working on bonjour account, is there a way to fix this or is there a work around.

For some reason at present I can not get Bonjour to work properly between My Leopard computer and my Tiger one.
Having Looked at Parental Controls I do not see that this is an iChat Issue.

WRT1900AC does not block internet access in Parental Control

Hi,My router does not block internet access on my other PC. I tryed "Always" tryed specific addresses, tryed IP addresses and everything tech support suggested. I even replaced the router at their advise. Nothing helped. I realize that the problem is not the router but probably my home network configuration, but I can't figure out what is it. Just thought I'd let you know. Our suspicions were correct, it was the OS. After I installed Snow Leopard (10.6.8) all the problems were corrected. I also updated the RAM from 1 gb to 6 gb. The mac is working all around better. Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. My superdrive had pooped out. Rather than replace it I got an external drive from OWC connected with firewire 800. So far everything is running very well, as far as I can tell this external drive is better than the original superdrive. My superdrive has always acted funny, infact I returned the first mac I got after a week because its superdrive was also malfunctioning. Anyway, all that to say everything seems to be fully functioning again.

I want to change Router2's Operating Mode from "Gateway" to "Router" because I
want to turn off NAT on Router2 so that I can access all computers attached to
Router2 by their individual IP instead of using port forwarding at Router2.
The problem is after the mode change from "Gateway" to "Router", and regardless
whether I disable RIP or enable RIP, and on what interfaces it is enabled, computer
192.168.2.160 does not have internet connection.
Observations:
[0] INTRAnet works as I can reach computer 192.168.2.160 from computer behind Router1
192.168.1.x and vice versa.
[1] ping and traceroute *work* on Router2 itself using the built-in dianostic tool.

This is not expected because NAT to internet should still be done by Router1, no? Computer
behind Router1 with IP 192.168.1.x has internet connection.
[5] It looks like I cannot change the Routing Table Entry on Router2. I do not think I need to change anything,
just an observation.
[6] If I use LAN to LAN connection, then both intranet and internet works. [The internet IP of Router2 can be
anything not in the same subnet of the Router1, and DHCP on the local side should be disabled to avoid conflict
with the the DHCP on Router1].

I have a question. Unfortunately in order to ask my question, I have to have a lengthy description of my setup. Basically, I have a second Linksys router in "router" operating mode with NAT disabled connected to the Verizon router, and I have a computer which is in a different subnet (192.168.2.x) behind the Linksys router. This computer can communicate with computers behind Verizon router in subnet (192.168.1.x), but cannot reach internet. This is a simplified version of my question, full details are in the original post.
If I setup the Linksys router in "gateway" operating mode, which means with NAT enabled, then both intranet and internet works, but there is no easy way to setup port forwarding for 10 compueters in 192.168.2.x network to communicate with 10 computers in 192.168.1.x network.
If I setup the Linksys router in a LAN to LAN configuration with Verizon routers, but this way all computers are in the same subnet, I want them to be in different subnet for access control and things like that.
I hope this makes things a little clear.

Parental controls are blocking an allowed app

I am setting up a second user with parental controls to block out app store and limit the internet. One of my apps (an online trading app called fxtrade) won't launch even though I ticked it in the options box in the parental controls area- and even though I try to give it permission by putting in my password. any ideas?P

There are a variety of Adobe services that need to remain enabled in order for Photoshop to work.
I would log in to the administrator account and make sure anything with Adobe is set to "allow."
Then, log in to the restricted account and test. If Photoshop works as expected, you can turn off one item at a time until you find the one that "breaks" Photoshop's functionality.

When I open a pdf file with PDFXchange reader running in Wine, I can highlight text in the file.
When I open the same file with Adobe I cant even dipslay the highlight toolbar, it says "Only available when document rights are enabled"
How can I fix this?

If by Adobe you mean Adobe Reader, then that would be normal for Reader 9, if you're talking about the Hightlight Text annotation tool. Reader 10 allows you to add text highlights and sticky note annotations without the document having the corresponding usage rights, assuming it doesn't have any security restrictions that would prevent it. Other PDF viewers are free to behave however they want.

I contacted Netflix and they had me install a newer version of their software Silverlight... this did nothing to resolve the issue. They were not familiar with the issue.

Well if your on 10.6.2, you need to software update to 10.6.8
Perhaps you need to adjust the Silverlight (Microsoft DRM video plug-in) sound level itself too
Run a check here to see if your current on your Silverlight (works for all browsers)

ITunes can't access shared library when Vista parental controls are on

I started a thread back on March 1 2008, but it got archived before it could be answered, see:

I'm using 64 bit Vista with iTunes version of 8.0.2.20, but I don't believe this issue has anything to do with the 64 bit versus 32 bit iTunes versions.
The exact message is:
"The shared library "libraryname" is not responding. (-39)
Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
But if I turn off Parental Controls, the shared library is accessible, it all works fine. This has nothing to do with the iTunes store (and potential web site blocking), I just want to allow shared library access while leaving parental controls on.
Any ideas?

This question has been around for almost two years now with no answer...very frustrating and disappointing that no one from Apple can step in and assist. I have set up the port number on my firewalls, both Windows and McAfee, as per the iTunes message and it still does not work...so I am now at a loss.
Turn off parental conrols and it all works perfectly...turn it on and library is visible but not accessible...PLEASE can someone help with this!!!

Dashboard stops working when parental controls enabled

Don't say this is answered because the workaround suggested in another topic does not work. This needs to be fixed soon - very annoying. Here are the steps to reproduce.
1. create 2 accounts.
2. enable parental controls on one of them.
3. set a time limit on the controlled account.
4. login to the non-controlled account when the controlled account does not have access.
5. access dashboard.
6. note that it does not work (no widgets come up and you cannot add them back)
If you try the workaround it is only temporary and you lose all your widgets the next time the controlled account is locked. I think there is more than one way to reproduce this but is the most common. Also, the workaround doesn't always work. I think this is a serious bug that fails the "it just works" test. This was my first OS X purchase and probably my last if these type of bugs continue to go unanswered.

I resolved this by going into the admin account and making a copy of safari then pasting it into the library folders as well as the application folders. You can also paste a copy of safari into the other user accounts (desktop) from the admin account. Once that is done, open the parent controls system (check the applications to allow) Internet tab then check safari. Hope that works for you

IMac...Safari not working when parental controls enabled, even when no safari or application restrictions have been set.

I woke up one morning to find that Safari could only open webpages on the administrator account.
The other accounts had parental controls enabled. However, not all of them even had any restrictions for using applications or Safari content. When I totally disabled parental controls, these other accounts could get access the internet through safari. When I enabled them (without setting up any paramters), Again Safari could not open any web pages. I tried reseting also.
Has anyone had this issue or have an idea of what I need to do to fix it? Thanks!

No Internet access when I use a certain static IP yet other IP's are ok.

Strange IP issue !!!
I have a windows 2003 sevrer with a static IP.
My network has a DHCP server and that Particular IP is in the exclusion range.
When I open a browser on the server I get the error "internet explorer cannot display the webpage"
However if I change the static IP address to a defferent static Ip address everything works fine.
Here's the funny bit.
If I set a different PC to this troublesome static IP I also get the issue.
So the problem is with the Static IP address itself?
On the DHCP server there is no indication that this is a BAD IP ADDRESS etc..
Checkeded the firewall an this is not blocking either.
Any ideas why this particular IP fails to get me internet access ?
