No internet connection sometimes at night?

sometimes, so far we have noticed only at night, my boyfriend and i have a problem connecting to the internet on our macbooks. i wonder if it has to do with the connection or our computers?? as far as we can recall this kind of problem really hasn't happened in the day time. would it have anything to do with 2 macs trying to find a connection?? we connect wirelessly via a cable connection. no settings were changed between the day and night. no settings were change at all for that matter, so i don't want to have to explain what my settings are and what not. bottom line, if nothing has been changed why would it be different at night?? that makes me think it is the connection. tonight when we restarted the modem and router it worked. anyone else have this problem in NJ with verizon (i think...maybe OPTonline)? seems to be since there were two macbooks in the house....he just got his last week. previously he had a pc laptop.
anyway....just curious if anyone has any theories as to why this might happen...some suggestions if it continues to happen so we don't have to restart the modem everytime. any input would be appreciated.
thanks so much.
--Carlee

Carlee, I have noticed that many Internet Service Providers will sometomes have problems in the early evening because of the amount of traffic on there servers. This can sometimes be caused because they just need larger servers or less customers.
Normally Dial-up is by far the worst, followed by
DSL and Cable is the best of the 3 mentioned.
It may be neccessary to reset your system when this occurs.
Shut of your machines, pull the power adapter from both your ISP's Modem and your Router. Wait 5 minutes and then in order.
Plug in your ISP's Modem and wait 1 minute.
Plug in your Router and wait 1 minute.
Now you can restart your computers.
We all have this problem from time to time, I have it when I get Automatic Updates and it requires a restart and it will sometime cause this issue.

  • Internet connection (sometimes) slow to come back after wake up

    Hi all,
I started having a strange problem few days ago. First time it happened my husband gave the iBook back to me after using it, and I logged into my user account - and internet connection was gone. I checked the airport settings, the bars were there - went and checked internet connection from the other computer and it was ok. Rebooted, twice, fiddled with the internet connections - and suddenly, without changing anything, the connection was back.
So I though it was weird, but since my iBook has been fine since I got it 7 months ago I didn't think more of it. Then it happens again - this time I opened it up from sleep, and again no internet connection, couldn't even contact the router although bars were there and it claimed that it was connected to the network. This time I didn't even change the settings, but just looked at them, and after 5 minutes or so the connection came back. Then it happened again, same symptoms and same solution - wait for 5 minutes and it will sort itself out. But of course it doesn't happen every time - yesterday it was fine.
Anyone has any ideas what's going on, and possibly even solve the issue?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    12" iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi.
Sorry that the simple fix doesn't do it. There are other things you can try, since WiFi can be cranky in many ways. First, are you running an Airport base station or some other wireless router? If it is "other", then you might try changing the broadcast channel on it. WiFi operates on 11 different channels in the 2.4 MHz band, and you might get more reliable connections on a different channel.
The Airport base station is smart enough to switch itself to the best channel, but you may have to do your own adjustments with other routers. Most use channel 6 by default; if you are in a neighborhood with lots of other WiFi access points around all running on channel 6, you can get significant interference. Try switching to channel 1 or channel 11. Other devices in the 2.4MHz band can also be a problem: garage door openers, cordless phones, or baby monitors.
Note your own router could have strong signal, but it would be fighting all the other signals coming in. If you are in an apartment building or in a block of houses fairly close together, such noise could be an issue. My neighbor was having WiFi connection outages, and it turned out that he had five detectable signals from his neighbors, all but one running on channel 6 along with him (I was on channel 3).
The location of your router can also be important. According to experts on the web, it is better to have your base station higher than your iBook. My neighbor had another strike against him when he put his base station into the basement while he tried to work in the bedroom above with a laptop.
Anyway, there are many things that can go wrong. You may indeed have a hardware problem, but let's rule some more easily fixable problems first.
    Good luck.

  • Intermittent Internet Connectivity Problem. Sometimes freezes Windows XP. Help please, anyone?

We switched from Comcast to Veriozon FIOS about a month ago.  Everything has been fine with the internet connection until recently.  I have two computers running Windows XP SP3, hardwired to the Verizon wireless router. One has Norton and one has AV Antivirus programs running.   Computer 2 suddenly started strange, occasional symptoms.  Click on a desktop shortcut icon (any of several, such as Yahoo or Ebay).  Intenet Explore begins to load and then freezes.  Entire Windows seems to lock up.  Use Windows taks manager to try to stop NOT RESPONDING IE.  Sometimes successful, sometimes we had to just shut down and reboot the computer.  Retry internet by clicking on the tray E for IE icon....no problem getting on line.  10 minutes later, leave internet.  Try again...XP freezes up.   In many cases a short cut icon to internet would not work twice.  Sometimes Computer 2 would go days WITH NO **bleep** PROBLEM.  Now for the last week, computer 2 is running properly, but today, good old reliable No 1 is acting up the same way.  All OK 70% of the time...big headache the rest of the time.   I even noticed a report from AV antivirus that internet connectivity was lost.  Then apparently restored.
Anyone have a clue what's going on?

Thanks for the first two replies.
    1.  Norton and AVG antivirus ran last night.   No problems.  Spybot also was run.   So I don't think the problem is related to Arun's ideas.
    2.  I have a MI424WR Verizon router.   The WAN light is on solid green, all the time. The Internet light flashes.
The router is fed by coax.
I dont know what bit torrent is.   Computer 2 is only used for Pogo on line simple stupid gaming (I am whining about wife's activities).   My Computer 1 is only used for ebay and simple web activities.
I tried resetting the router once today...helped nothing.
Just now I could not get connected via shortcuts.   BUT---I can always get on line through Outlook Express.  And I got here via an email link.
    go figure

  • Internet connection keeps dropping at night

I'm having a bit of a weird problem with my internet connection. I connect via an ethernet cable and the connection keeps dropping. It generally starts after 7pm and seems to be every 40 minutes. I have changed the microfilters and ethernet cable but I'm still getting this problem. The really weird thing is that all four lights on the hub are blue but the computer cannot connect to the router. Sometimes the connection will just drop other times it will say limited connection. I've finally had to resort to windows diagnostics and sometimes even that doesn't work. I swapped my black hub with the old white one and  I didn't have this problem of the connection dropping but my connection speed dropped to 1.5 - 2mb.
I was thinking maybe there was something wrong with my ethernet card but now I think it must be something in the black hub because the white one worked. Am I correct in thinking I need a new router?

My Macbook Pro 13" lost Internet connection last night. It's still out today, but my mother's Windows machine still gets it just fine. What happened to my Mac? The folks at Comcast told me it's a problem for Apple to fix. I'm hoping someone here can give me some insight.

  • Internet sharing--sometimes the 2nd computer is connected, sometimes not.

Our set-up: the G4 is connected to DSL via ethernet. We've got the old G3 (for the kids) connected to the G4 by firewire.
Following the instructions in David Pogue's book Mac OS X The Missing Manual, we turned Internet Sharing "on" for the G4, the gateway computer, and set the network settings on the G3 to get internet connection via firewire.
We were triumphant! The G3 had internet connection. Yay!
Lo and behold, it didn't last. The next day, the G3 was not online. We double-checked the settings, and they were okay.
Internet Sharing was still "on", on the G4, and the G4 had internet connection.
The G3 indicated it had internet by a green light next to fireware in the Network panel, however Safari could not load anything and Mail couldn't get any mail.
    Argh!
I ran Tech Tools on the G3, restarted it, checked the settings once again, and YAY!, the G3 had internet. Then...same thing...it didn't last. Safari won't load, Mail can't connect....
This has happened more than once. Sometimes the G3 is connected, and then it isn't.
Ideas, please. Why isn't the G3 staying online?
    M.

If the host machine is allowed to sleep, the connection it shares will be lost.
Perhaps you need to attempt some other means of sharing internet; maybe
a router or other device to share the source between one or more computers.
Mine can use my AEBS (white orb version) to share the internet; they can
also use Ethernet, from the DSL modem.
So seldom do I think about this anymore, I am at a loss for details. Short
of looking online to see for sure what they call the hardware, exactly.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Ok I think it's a problem with my router. I went to my cousin's house and the Wi-Fi worked there perfectly. I was even able to download many apps. So I guess my router probably can't take in more connections. Oh well thanks anyway.

  • Internet connection is fine but sometimes pages won't load and I have to restart firefox before everything is okay why is this happening?

Okay three times now I would go to a page I've already gone to (like my email) and suddenly Firefox will say it can't load it even though the internet connection is fine, the cookies settings are fine, and I can get to the site on Google and I can get to the Firefox Homepage. Everything turns out fine when I leave Firefox and then start it again. I never had this problem before I updated to Firefox 4. I want to know why this is happening and what I can do to stop it.

Power off the router. Wait awhile. Power it back on. Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.
    Restart the computer.

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Internet Connection Keeps Dropping

So for a couple of months now my internet connection has been randomly dropping out. It happens sometimes a couple of times a night, sometimes not at all. When the connection drops out the router seems to power off (all lights turn off, power light turns red). After a couple minutes the router seems to reboot and everything is fine. During this time FiOS TV continues to work.
I have now had 3 new routers and new ONT. None of this has solved the problem. I have tried multiple coax lines and that hasn't solved the issue. I have tried moving the router to a location with better ventilation and that hasn't solved the issue. I have tried plugging the router into a UPS and that hasn't solved the issue. I have tried plugging the ONT into a UPS and that hasn't solved the issue.
I am about ready to drop FiOS all together, a connection that randomly drops out multiple times a night just is not usable. I can't play any internet games for fear of getting disconnected, I can't watch videos without it stopping halfway through. I have a tech coming out Friday but I am not sure what they can do.
    Does anyone have some suggestions?
