No Internet with Airport Express - Internet with ethernet

I have achieved frustration.
I have searched and searched the forums for the answer to this, and all I find is "reset the modem"
iMac
OSX 10.6.1
Airport Extreme
Airport Utility on iMac
Arescom Netdsl 800 modem
Qwest ISP
I can connect to the Airport Express, seamlessly with the Airport Utility.
However, I do not have Internet.
If I take the ethernet cable out of the Airport Express and plug it directly into the iMac, I have lightning fast Internet.
Can anyone help me out? Can anyone point me in a direction?

I don't see anything unusual with the modem information that would prevent a normal installation.
Try a factory reset on the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) as follows:
Pull the power for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the AEBS back in to power
Release the reset button after approximately 8-10 seconds
Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN (circle icon) port on the AEBS and use AirPort Utility to reconfigure the device. The main settings that you will choose are Connect Using "Ethernet" and Connection Sharing would be "Share a public IP address"
It's possible that you may get a Double NAT error notice. You can click to ignore this warning.
See if that might help.

Hi, I run a small motel and I am trying to extend the wireless network from the office to the rooms in the next building.
I have an AirPort Xtreme connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it works fine. I have then connected an AirPort Express to this in the next bulding wirelessly (as i cant run an ethernet cable outside) which extends the network over all but the last 2 rooms in the next building. There are bick walls so it sruggles over the distance. I realise I cant connect another airport express wirelessly to extend the network further but can I connect another Airport Express using and ethernet cable to the exisiting Aiport Express to extend the network that extra distance?

You can do this, but as you might imagine, that is going to place even more of a load on the weakest link....the wireless "hop"......between your AirPort Extreme and the current AirPort Express.
So, things will slow down even more. Whether or not that will be acceptable to your guests is open to question. Light browsing and email should be OK. Someone trying to download a large file is going to be waiting longer than they might consider normal.
Things like this, you simply cannot predict in advance. Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy if the new Express puts more of load on the network than is expected.

Connecting Airport Extreme to Airport Express as an ethernet receiver

1. I am using an airport express to send out my wireless signal.
2. I want to receive that signal using my airport extreme
3. Then I want to be able to extend my airport express network to ethernet connected computers on my airport extreme
4. Then I also want to extend the wireless signal of my airport express using my airport extreme
I currently can NOT get the airport extreme to share the airport express network through the ethernet ports.
The airport extreme says "This base station is setup to extend a wireless network, but the network it is attempting to join does not have 'Allow the network to be extended' selected." (I can't find that select box in the airport express manual setup anywhere!)

That is an 802.11n feature. Since the AirPort Express (AX) is NOT 802.11n capable, the AX does not support that feature.
Instead you must configure the AX and AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to connect using WDS. Ensure that your AEBS is configured to operate in an 802.11g compatible mode.

Internet radio through a Yamaha amp connected to a airport express using a ethernet cable

I am trying to connect my new Yamaha amp to my 5 year old "g" airport express to access Internet radio via ethernet cable, my internet runs from a adsl modem to a 5 gen airport extreme "n" then wireless to the express, both hooked up together ok but can not get the Internet working through the Ethernet cable, I have also tried other devices on the same ethernet cable with no success. Do I Need to upgrade to a new generation airport express for this to work??

Yes. The older Express does not have the Ethernet feature that you need.

Can I share internet from a airport express via the ethernet port

I have a older airport express that I am trying to you to share the internet with a Marantz AV receiver. I used to be able to share the internet to a PS2 a few years back.
I was able to set up another network parallel to my normal wireless network with an older moonbase style airport extreme using WDS.
I am unsure if this is the limitation that apple has introduced to the unit, or it is a Telstra firewall issue.
Is it possible using a combination of Airport Etremes or expresses to share the internet to a wired unit?

I have a new airport extreme that I use all the time. I was using the older airport express for airplay.
The older airport extreme I just pulled down from the cupboard trying to get the AVR connected.
Since posting I have able to use the Airport extreme to connect the AVR via the ethernet port.
Still curious why I cannot connect using the airport express.
Interestingly the older airport extreme pushed the new airport extreme into WDS mode. Tried to hook up the express and it did not work.

I have DSL to my tower with an 802.11N Airport card, I used the Airport Utility to 'make a new network' with an Airport Express 802.11N connected to my home theatre, and it works fine streaming iTunes.
The cable co. makes you register the MAC address of the machine that will be served by the DSL modem, and allows up to two other addresses if phoned in otherwise any other MAC address attached direct to the DSL will not get a signal.
I have made the network 'closed' and WEP2, then used the MAC address exclusions in Airport Utility to add a bit of extra protection.
Under this set up I was under the impression that the tower would still serve DCHP addresses wirelessly to the Express to anything that knew the network name and password.
The previous generation of Express used to be able to allow you to plug in a PDA with an ethernet card and be serving the ethernet, what is the problem with continuing that on the newest version? I see no point in being tied down to where ever the cable co. installed the modem just to use my PDA on the net, or cart the tower around the house to PDA connect to.
The stupid Express was a great solution for that previously...walk to a wall socket plug in establish the network and connect something to the ethernet port.
With previous Airport Utility software it was fairly clear as to whether you have turned on the ethernet port of the Express to serve an internet connection, with the latest AU software it is not.
I CANNOT serve any DSL signal through the Express no matter what setting I have tried. Turning off the firewall settings, MAC addy exclusions, 'closed' network to open, and attempting to reset the Express with something other than the bridge configuration makes no change (or functional) signal service to the Express.
I even imagined I would have to go through System Preferences and turn on Internet Sharing (sub selections, Share your connection from: "Built-In Ethernet" and further selection "To computers using: Airport"
The only thing I didnt try tinkering with was the Web Proxy (HTTP) protocol selection as Glimmerblock uses that to help do its job, but that also doesnt make sense to downstream blocking the ethernet port from serving a web connection.
If I try the other Simple Setup selections under AU software, I royally lose detection of the Express and otherwise does not do any favors for making this work. Someone here told another person to use the setup assistant chosing "Join existing network" but thats wrong, the tower cant make the network with just the Airport Card alone, it needs the Express available to 'make a new' network... you cant even access any panels of Airport Utility without the Express being reset and ready for programming with the AU software.
Is there a way to make the port serve outgoing internet signal grabbed wirelessly from the tower?

No no, not an unsecure network, Im saying once the basic Assisted setup was followed in the previous OS 10.4 for Airport, you could go back in manually and set things to WDS which supposedly was the only way to go CableModem~Tower~Airport to Express~out express ethernet port to wired only machine.
Ive tried doing it that way for this newer Airport Utility and its frustrating as blankity, the only way to make a wireless network is between the tower's airport card to the express, you cant make just a network with the built in Tower Card at all. Then you could force the express to join it, otherwise it wont work.
I tried the WDS Main/Remote/Relay settings both ways with the Airport ID addresses for the tower AND express, switching them hoping one works, all I get is infinite loop of having to reenter the airport setup password when the express is updated and rebooted.
It wasnt this intricate before, is all Im saying. All it took was setting to WDS mode after going thru basic setup, checkmarking the box, updating the unit, restarting and there, the express served the wired client through the ethernet port.

How to extend range of my wireless network with an Airport Express connected by ethernet with Airport Utility 6.0

I have AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Gen) firmware 7.6.1, that is connected to my main wifi base station (a TimeCapsule) by ethernet. I would like to extend the range of the Wifi Network but am not clear on how to do so using the new interface of Airport Utlity 6.0.
Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?

Many thanks for the tips. I have downloaded 5.6 and have set my Airport Express in the "Extend a wireless network" mode. I was still having a few problems with the quality of the wifi connection in different parts of my apartment (by no means a very large one, but walls seem to be made of extra dense concrete here in Singapore) and went out and bought a few powerline adapters by TP Link (http://www.tp-link.sg/products/details/?categoryid=1862&model=TL-PA211#spec).
If you don't mind a slightly long post, I would be very grateful for any tips:
My setup is now as follows:
Main room
Time Capsule - connected to a Cisco DPC3925 Modem (http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/modem_DPC3925.html) both connected to a TP Link adapter 1.
iMac - connected via Ethernet to TP Link adapter 2 and wifi enabled
Airport Express 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1) used to stream audio to a stereo that doesn't have an optical cable input. Since it is an Ethernet connection, I have wifi turned off.
Apple TV 1 - connected by Ethernet to TimeCapsule (and thus TP Link adapter 1)
Bedroom A
Airport Express 2 - connected via ethernet to TP Link adapter 3
Bedroom B -
Apple TV 2 - connected by Ethernet to a TP Link adapter 4
After following the tips on setting up the extended wifi network, I find that when I use a wireless client (e.g. iPad, Macbook air, etc) in either Bedroom B or Bedroom C (both don't have wifi in the room) the connection is very poor. Even more odd is that the connection in Bedroom A, one that does have Airport Express 2. To be clear when I mean very poor, I mean Skype/facetime skips frames and freezes... this doesn't happen when I am in the main living area.
I would be very grateful for tips on how to set up the most robust network given the configuration above. Specifically, I am wondering about:
When I select Extend a wireless network option on Airport Utility 5.6 the summary page states that it is connecting using "Wireless Network" vs what I would expect it to say "Ethernet connection".
Is there any advice on whether to enable 5Ghz network and if so, should I try to use that for the various wifi clients?
Does anyone know if I can somehow use Apple products to extend the reach of the Cisco DPC3925? Frustratingly the signal is quite strong (compared to Apple routers), but I cannot properly stream audio/video if that wifi network is used (as my iMac that hosts the content is on the Apple one... and I'd have to walk over to switch it to the Cisco one).
Any other tips would be much appreciated!

Airport Express as an Ethernet Bridge....Can it be done?

I have both a Airport Extreme Base Station and a Express Base Station. I need to connect my TV to the internet (TV has no Wi-Fi, but is internet capable). Can I use my Express Base as an Ethernet Bridge? I already have both "Stations" on one network allowing me to play music from my computer through my home theater system and use the internet at the same time.

If you have the newer Airport Extreme with "n", not the flying saucer style, then you would probably be better off in the long run to buy the newer "n" version of the Airport Express.
That way your network would run faster overall then the older b/g series.
I sold all 3 of my older Airport Express units on eBay and replaced them with the newer "n' models.

How can I use Airport Express (2004 version) ethernet port?

I am using a Time Capsule to access the internet. Now I would like to use my old AE to "root" that internet connection via the ethernet port to my WD HD TV Live (or Notebook w/o wifi).
I know that it is possible with the newer airport express version coz a friend has it setup. But I could not make it work with the AE 2004.
The latest available firmware is 6.5.3 while on the AE 2008 it is 7.5.2
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, your older version of the AirPort Express does not have the capability to "extend a wireless network", so you'll need to use the 802.11n version of the AirPort Express to do what you want to do.

Airport Express acts as ethernet connection?

I have an older Airport Express (~3 years) that I've been using to stream iTunes to my stereo. That was working great until iTunes version 8 and the 6.3 Airport update, but that's a different post.
My question is this: Is the ethernet port on the airport express only used to update software from your computer?
What I want to do is connect my new Sony BluRay player to it so it can access BD-Live (I think that's what it's called) and the Internet.
The BluRay player doesn't recognize it.
Thoughts?

In order to enable the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port to provide Internet access, the AX will need to be reconfigured as remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

Yes. The following setup will work in most hotels:
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your choice
Radio Mode = 802.11n (b/g compatible) is a good choice
Channel = Automatic
Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal or WPA2 Personal
Password = Your choice
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings. Plug the Express in at the hotel (or into one of the LAN ports on your router if you want to test it) and power it up. Open your browser and the hotel's log in page will appear so you can agree to terms and pay the fees.
Important...some hotels will not allow more than one computer at a time to connect, so for example you may not be able to have your computer and iPhone connected at the same time. Unfortunately, no way around this.

Airport Express Constantly Wants Ethernet connection

I'm just trying to set up my express to hook up to my usb printer. It is constantly flashing amber... I have downloaded new firm ware, but it still is flashing and constantly asking me to hook it up to ethernet, which I don't want to hook it up to the internet. I just want to plug it into the wall, with a usb printer and work... It's driving me crazy!

Don't let it drive your crazy - just ignore it, becuase that is all you can do.
If your Airport Express is not connected to another network, either by cable or wirelessly, then it won't be able to obtain an IP address - and that is all the flashing amber status light is trying to tell you. In the mode you are using your Airport Express, a flashing amber status light is always going to be normal and expected.

Airport Express and Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini Home Edition

I recently bought a Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini - Home Edition. I have it all set up on my home network when all of a sudden my Netgear router bites the big one.
I am looking into getting the Airport Express for its wireless streaming capabilities. My question is:
- Can I hook my cable modem through the USB port on the Airport Express for internet use? If so, can I hook my Disk Mini into the Ethernet port on the Airport Extreme to access my drive? If not, I spose I can buy a regular linksys switch to split the lines?

1. No, the USB port on the AirPort Express is solely for printer usage.
2. With the latest AirPort Expresses you should be able to access your hard drive via ethernet, but since there is only one port you will have to have another wireless router to broadcast your internet. And you can't just have a router to split the port on the Express, it either runs in WAN mode (which is for a cable or dsl modem) or LAN mode (for accessing your hard drive). It can't run in both at the same time.
You could buy a cheap Linksys router but I can't guarantee how well the Express will work with extending the wireless network. It really sounds like you need to get the AirPort Extreme Base Station.

Airport express and the ethernet port

Since January, I've had my older g/b model of airport express set to "join the network," which is an 802.11n airport extreme connected to my cable modem. Until last week, the ethernet port of the airport express could be used to connect in my DVD player or TV. I could do software updates on the DVD player, and watch youtube on the TV, etc. The connection became slow last week, so I decided to reconfigure the airports. Since then, the ethernet connection to the airport express is no longer recognized.
Please note, although the airport express is not an "n" model, this set-up did work just fine! The DVD or TV was automatically able to display my IP address. The express has a green light, it has no errors in Airport Utility, and AirTunes still works just fine — it's only the ethernet port that has become completely inactive.
Any thoughts?

Not sure how you managed to do this with an 802.11g AirPort Express unless you had it configured to extend the wireless range of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme in a WDS. As far as I know, the ProxySTA (wireless Ethernet bridge) capability is only available with the 802.11n Express.

Can i use an airport express as an ethernet print server?

here's my situation: i have a belkin wireless g router connected to my cable modem and my G4 desktop connected to the belkin router. i need to access an epson 3000 printer with only an ethernet port in another room in the house. i was told my the tech guy in the local apple store that i could use an airport express to do this but for the life of me i can't make it happen using either airport setup assistant or airport admin utility. so is it possible? and if not, what would you suggest i do so i can access the printer?
