No ip with router in bridge mode

i am running a 2009 mac pro, os x server, with some minor and ultimately forgotten changes to unix level services like PHP.
it's been customized, but everything works. Except for one thing, under peculiar circumstances, and I really need help to fix the problem.
here it is as quickly as I can describe it:
I am running an airport extreme router off of my brand new FIOS router (wifi out of the airport). The FIOS router wants the airport in "bridge mode" (if you do not know what bridge mode is, you probably cannot help me,) When I set the airport to bridge mode, my computer cannot get an ip address. it can't see the router, and it doesn't seem to be able to see it at all.
I have 2 computers in addition to this (older mac pro, and a brand new Macbook Air) that don't even need to be nudged. they just work.
I have 3 iDevices that work without complaint as wel.
I also have a wii, a PS3 that, again, without any prodding, accept the change to bridge mode, and get on with it.
can anyone out there suggest any possibilities here?
the only things that are majorly different is that the airport extreme is changed over to bridge mode, and the IP address list is different. (1.92.168... vs the 10.0.1....)
I can work without being in bridge mode, but it robs me of performance, and I like to follow the rules.

Grant, the only true statement was the first one.
the APE is smart enough to do all of the other things you suggest, automatically.
I know that I mentioned that there are a lot of other devices and that They do not have any difficulty when the router is switched into bridge mode. Let me be more sussinct...
No other internet appliance on the network (and there are quite a few) has any difficulty connecting to the internet automatically and without even the slightest adjustment, once the APE is put into bridge mode.
but since I am trying to figure this out, I have more information.
first, my mac pro does seem to have an ip address from the router, in that I was mistaken. It has an IP and it cannot connect to the internet.
second, I decided to try to connect to the FIOS router's wifi directly, to try to determine where the problem is, and it appears that I have the exact same problem directly connected to the Fios Router's wifi.
any inspiration would be appreciated, but I think I might know what is going on. the Mac Pro wants one specific IP address. I think I might have given it a static IP years ago, and there might be some Unixy things I have to do to undo that.

  • How to Configure Transparent caching on Cat 6500 with CSM in bridge mode?

    hi.
I found How to Configure Transparent caching on Cat 6500 with CSM in routed mode.
    But,
I need help How to Configure Transparent caching on Cat 6500 with CSM in bridge mode?
Please let me know sample configuration.
    thanks.

    Hi,
I wrote the document you mentioned and I also wrote the one below.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/modules/ps2706/products_configuration_example09186a00802c1201.shtml
The one with the SSLM is a bridge mode config.
If you replace the SSLM with a cache [or a farm of caches] it would be a similar config.
Replace the SSL21 vserver with an HTTP vserver [most important is to keep the vlan configured on each vserver]

  • Time Capsule with Extreme in Bridge Mode

I want to connect a Time Capsule (latest version) to an Airport Extreme (latest version) in bridge mode.  Is it possible to have a guest network with this configuration?  If so, how do I configure the stations?

I currently own the latest version of Airport Extreme (not in bridge mode) and was thinking about adding a Time Capsule for extending the network in my home and for data backups.
OK, got that. You asked about a Guest Network earlier.....does the AirPort Extreme currently provide both a "main" and "guest" network?
I wanted to make the T.C. my main router and wire it to my existing Extreme (after a factory reset).
Here, I am confused.....since you just noted that you wanted to add the Time Capsule to extend the AirPort Extreme network?  In that case, the Time Capsule will extend the main network....and the guest network provided by the AirPort Extreme.
But....the Time Capsule will not be the main router in this type of setup. It will be the extending device.....unless.....you mean to say that you plan to swap roles and locate the Time Capsule where the Airport Extreme currently is located and vice versa.  Is this what you want to do?
From what i've read on Apple sites, I should set the A.E. in bridge mode, correct?
You don't need to set the extending router in Bridge Mode.....AirPort Utility will do that for you automatically during the setup.
It sounds like you may be reading some older support documents and thinking that you must manually configure Bridge Mode. This is no longer required. The extending device will be configured in Bridge Mode by AirPort Utility.  You do not have to worry about doing this yourself.

I have a linksys WRT 54G router that I wish to have Bridge Mode capability. How can I determine if this router has that capability.
Linksys Article ID: 24583 describes the procedure to turn a unit that is bridge mode capable into bridge mode, but which numbered ports of the router have Bridge Mode capability.

WRT's Linksys firmware doesn't support bridge mode. You will need use a 3rd part firmware like DD-WRT.

  • Using a Dlink router in bridged mode with Airport Express

I have a broadban connectiond via a Zyxel P-660 wifi modem + router.  I have connected the Airport Express to this modem via ethernet and set up a wifi network. The wifi on the Zyxel has been turned off.
Since the wifi signal is weak in the other rooms, I am planning to link up a Dlink DIR-600 router running on the DD-WRT firmware on the bridged mode with the AE.
What settings do I need to have on the Dlink ?

I am planning to link up a Dlink DIR-600 router running on the DD-WRT firmware on the bridged mode with the AE.
If you are planning to have the Dlink device pickup the wireless signal from the AirPort Express and then "repeat" that signal, it is extremely unlikely that this will work.
Apple uses proprietary settings for their "extend" feature, which will only work with other Apple routers. It is....as far as we know....not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.
What settings do I need to have on the Dlink ?
All you can do is try to follow Dlink's instructions to setup the device as a "repeater" or "relay". The DD-WRT Forum might provide some tips. As you might imagine, there will not be much chance of a Dlink user ever seeing your post on an Apple forum.
    DD-WRT Forum :: View topic - D-link DIR-600
There are no settings on the AirPort Express to adjust for this other than the obvious setting to check the box next to "Allow this network to be extended" on the Wireless settings page.
    Good luck

  • Routed or bridged mode + licensing question

    Hi Cisco ACE gurus,
I have the following questions and I would be grateful if anyone could answer them.
    1) As we know the basic license for ACE limits its throughput to 4Gbps. What does it mean? Does it mean that only load balanced traffic is limited (policed) to 4Gbps? Or any other traffic passing through ACE is limited to 4Gbps (from what I know ACE is a cef720 linecard having 20Gbps to a switch fabric)?
My question comes from the following scenario. Let's say ACE is deployed in routed mode and it has 1 client vlan and 2 server vlans. There are VIPs, serverfarms, rservers defined etc.... Now there is a need for a rserver from vlan1 to communicate with a rserver from vlan2 (directly and not through a VIP). In this scenario def gateway of both servers points to ACE (ACE is doing inter-vlan routing).
So in this case in order to allow for that communication I would need to create ACLs and apply them to ACE interfaces.
Does it mean that the traffic would be limited to only 4Gbps?
    2) let's say I have 2 DC (2 different geo locations). ACE is located only in one of them. Real servers are dispersed in both of them. ACE is deployed in routed mode. Is it possible to configure ACE in such a scenario (to server VIPs for clients when rservers are in 2 different DC)?
My assumption is that it is possible and in order to do that I would have to use NAT (and source NAT client traffic) so that traffic sent from client to a VIP could be src natted and go to the other DC (through client vlan), reach the rsevers in the other DC and come back.
Is it possible to also do that while ACE is deployed in bridged mode?
While reading about ACE and NAT I came across the sentence "ACE is not able to NAT bridged traffic". What does it mean?
    regards

sorry Marko but I am lost. We are talking now about one-armed mode of deployment. There
are 2 contexts and the same vlan is used in both of them (that's why it is shared). In this case I don' understand what you wrote "you have server A in the shared VLAN of context A, you can not reach a VIP from context B" ... that is the same vlan so I can't see any problems..... unless you are describing situation for bridged mode deployment of ACE.

  • Guest Networking with Time Capsule - bridge mode?

    Hi, hopefully someone can help.
I'm trying to set up guest networking with my time capsule but it's currently set up in bridge mode so it wont let me.
When I try it in public IP address mode it says 'The DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Airport wireless device'
I'm completely new to networking and have no idea what most of these terms mean, despite googling them all!
Can anyone advise on what I need to do to get it all set up?
Thanks in advance, any help much appreciated!!
    Andy

Is there no way I could switch off part of the router so it just becomes a modem (or are they completely different things)?
It might be possible to convert the gateway to function as a simple bridge only modem, but that would involve checking with the support folks for the device. I doubt that your service provider will provide any assistance with this, because they will likely claim that this type of configuration is not supported.
So, look to see who actually manufactured the device and check with their online forum or support site to see if the conversion to a simple bridge only modem is possible.
You don't indicate whether you have cable of DSL service, and that will of course affect things as well. If you need to go to a simple modem, the best choice is always a device offered by your service provider, so that you will be supported in the event of Internet connection difficulties.
If you try an off-the-shelf modem and have any problems, your service provider will offer little or no support. Often, you can get a free modem from your provider in return for a commitment of a year's service. Might be worth checking that out.

  • PBR with ACE in bridge mode

I have one ACE configured in bridge mode.
for proxy users : they have the VIP as proxy so the traffice from the client with destination the VIP
but there are some users without proxy so we used the Policy Base Routing and it is working and can see the connections on the ACE
but with destination IP of the websites so the traffice is not comming back as show below
    BC-LB1/BlueCoat# sho conn | include 10.1.50.10
    1782765    1  in  TCP   210  10.1.50.10:52052      67.195.160.76:80      SYNSEEN
    1355728    1  out TCP   210  67.195.160.76:80      10.1.50.10:52052      INIT
    BC-LB1/BlueCoat#
in the PBR , we used the VIP as next hop address.
please advice what is the problem?
    thanks in advance

    Good afternoon,
As you mentioned, it seems the return traffic is not coming back through the ACE. You should review your PBR configuration to ensure that also the return traffic is matched and sent to the ACE

  • Airport Extreme ethernet routing in Bridge Mode

i had(!) the following scenario Airport Extreme (5th Generation) .. via WAN connect to the modem, Ethernet to serval switches, WiFi acting as WDS Main
the WDS Slaves are 3 small Airport express and one Airport Extreme (1st Generation)
due a cabeling problem i had to move the WAN Modem .. and connected it to the 1st generation airport extreme created a Joined network (not WDS) enabled DHCP on the same device.
the new Airport extreme (5th generation) and the Airport Express joined the same network and running in bridge mode.
everything works just like before .. all networks parts can connect to each other, anywhere else including the internet.
exept of anything connected to the ethernet ports of the (now slaved) airport extreme (5th generation) anything connected there seems not to be routed at all ..
they have a physical connection (link show on the Airport and on the Switch. but there is zero data going trough ... no DHCP adresses assigned. manually assign a IP in the same network results in the same effect (can't even ping the directly connected Airport Extreme.
    is this a Bug ?

oh ic ... thats why it worked before the other way arround ...
well does still not make any sense to me .. but you are 100% right ..
enabeling WDS on the Airport Extreme (1gen) and doing slave the Airport extreme (5 gen) works fine .. but the connection times are about 10 times slower than in a joined network.
which makes the whole show extremly slow ...
it takes some times 5 minutes and a million time clicking (assign new) to just get an IP adress ... even if the dhcp running on the same Airport where the client is connecting to ..
if the 5gen APE is WDS master .. and the 1gen is WDS Slave (my old setup) .. this problem is not existing ...
but then ican't connect the WAN modem to the slaved Airport since the slave is always bridged and the master requires internet connectivity trough the local Wan port
any idea to get arround this ?

  • Problems connecting airport express a1264 to bt homehub 3 router in bridge mode

I cant seem to get this to work. When i had sky i could bridge my airport express to their router and create a new network so i could extend the network upstairs using another airport express.
I just cant seem to get it to work with the bt homehub 3. can anyone help?

Althrough have no experience of the device this Netgear extender has apparently been used with Home Hub (Ver 2) with success.

Every "free Netgear router" i have received from ISPs in the past has been slung in a large box and forgotten.
Much prefer Cisco or Apple with the ISP device simply being a modem.

  • Using an AE as a router? (Bridge Mode?)

We're attending a trade-show in Vegas next week, and the internet is VERY expensive. We're purchasing one "Wireless Code" which means that we get a code to their wireless network. We have 2 wired Mac Minis that we're planning on using. I have both an Airport Extreme, and an Airport Express that I can take with us to the show. My question is, if I'm not connecting to an Apple base-station, am I going to be able to connect the router to the Hotel, and then use the Wired network with the two machines?
I've been playing with the setup, but it looks like I need the MAC address and a few other things I may not have access to.
    Thoughts?

If you've got an airport extreme and express, you should be able to get this to work.
You should be able to set your extreme to connect to a wireless network. It will then share the connection to computers on the ethernet port. The only problem I see is that it turns off NAT/DHCP so the airport and the two minis will be requesting IPs from the wireless connection. This may or may not work.
You can probably then attach the express to the extreme and it will give out NAT/DHCP addresses wirelessly to the minis (if necessary).
One other way to get around this without using routers is by connecting just one mac mini to their wireless network. Then choose to share the internet connection over ethernet to the other mini. This will work if they're close. If they're not close, you can connect the express to the first mini's ethernet port and create a new wireless network that's using the mini's shared connection.
Of course, test all this out by connecting to a wireless network somewhere else before going. You should be able to get it working right

  • HH 4 & TP-Link nano router WR702N (bridge mode)

I wonder if anyone can assist. I am trying to set up the tp-link device as a bridge, however whilst my hub recognises it as a device within the home network devices when I try to connect to the bridge it doesn't work.
I have set up the bridge with a static ip and can amend the bridge settings accordingly from this. Having followed the instructions from various sources I'm at a loss as to what I'm doing wrong.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Does Bridge Mode Work only with Apple Router?

Can I use an Airport Extreme Router, in Bridge Mode, as a wireless bridge in a network that does not use an Apple Router?
Situation:  Wifi Hotspot from Smartphone connects to Dlink Wireless Bridge in other room allowing Wifi access to printers having only Hard-Wired Ethernet connections.  Trying to do the same with an Airport Extreme, with same network name and password, in bridge mode, to provide a PC internet access through the Ethernet connection to Airport Extreme.  Cannot seem to get the Airport Extreme in Bridge Mode to function as a wireless bridge on this network.

Are both of your AirPort Extreme models the "ac" version?
So Base Station (2) would be set to bridge mode, hard wired to Station (1).  Base Station (2) - I believe in this configuration will broadcast the wireless signal from Station (1), the router, with all DHCP addressing handled by Station (1).
No, Base Station 2 would not broadcast the wireless signal from Base Station 1. Base Station 2 would broadcast its own wireless signal, which it derives from the Ethernet connection coming from Base Station 1.
You don't have to worry about "bridge mode" if you use Apple's "wizard" to set things up in AirPort Utility.
If the wireless on Base 2 is configured to use the same wireless network name and password as Base 1, then Base 2 will act like an "extender", and it will seem as if you have one "big" network. This type of setup is called a Roaming Network.
Base Station 2 would only broadcast the wireless signal from Base 1....IF....Base 2 was connecting using wireless. But, you changed the question to ask about Base 1 and Base 2 connecting using Ethernet.
