No iPad mirroring

I have an iPad 2, iPhone 5 and 3rd generation AppleTV.  The iPad and iPhone have iOS 8.1.2.
The iPad doesn't have a mirroring switch when I select AppleTV but the iPhone does.  I can watch videos using the iPad on the AppleTV but the video screen on the iPad is blank.  I can't see the desktop or email or anything but videos on my TV from my iPad.  Of course, am able to do everything I am supposed to with my iPhone.
I have had the iPad and AppleTV checked out by the Apple Genius Bar but they couldn't figure it out.
Does anyone else have any ideas?

There was another thread about this issue that had a solution:
>>My uncle had this issue today with his iPad. The solution in his case was quite simple.
When you touch the AirPlay button on your iPad you have to pull it up to see the mirroring option.
I can show you a video if you still can't get it working.<<
Bingo!  This is the solution.  The mirroring switch wouldn't appear when I selected Airplay>Apple TV on my iPad 3rd gen or Mini.  However, on my iPhone 5 it was right there as soon as I selected Airplay.  On the iPads only iPad and Apple TV showed as choices.  But when I swiped up in the box (I didn't have to select Apple TV then swipe) the mirroring switch was visible and the Airplay enabled speakers were, also.  On the iPhone, however when I selected Airplay all the choices were in view immediately.
It's amazing they made this change and didn't tell anybody.  I've spent two months and repeated messages on the communities boards trying to get help.  The latest guidance from Apple are articles for iOS 7!  Come on Apple, update your instruction articles.

  • Problem using iPad mirroring with an Apple TV and 4:3 Projector

I'm a teacher and I've been using my iPad 2 in the classroom for about a year and a half. I would use Apple's VGA Adapter to connect to my projector, which worked fine. I just didn't like being tied down, and the dock connector would come loose very easily and lose connection to the projector, which interrupted the flow of the lesson.
So this summer, I got an Apple TV and a projector with an HDMI port so I could start using Airplay Mirroring to get the iPad screen onto the projector. But I'm having trouble with the aspect ratio. Forgive my drawing, but the genius at the Apple store had a hard time understanding my explanation, so I'm hoping this will help show what I mean.
My projector (ViewSonic DLP PJD5133) can be set to either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio (4:3, 800x600 is the native resolution). My projector screen in the front of the classroom is 4:3, so when the projector is set to 4:3, the image fills up the screen (which is what I want - it needs to be as big as possible so the entire class can see it clearly; plus it means all the output pixels are being used). When the projector is set to 16:9, the image is letterboxed (not ideal unless I'm showing a widescreen video or image).
The Apple TV's native aspect ratio is widescreen, and the iPad's native aspect ratio is 4:3, so if you use Airplay mirroring on a widescreen TV, the Apple TV will pillarbox the image (add horizontal black bars on each side), so that the image will not be stretched/distorted. (I know that it will show widescreen videos and a few widescreen-ready apps without the pillarbox, but the apps I use in class - Keynote, Noteshelf, etc. - don't fall in that category). The effect on my projector screen is a tiny 4:3 image taking up half the area it would have taken if I had used the VGA connection.
So in the Apple TV, I went to Settings>Audio & Video>TV resolution, and chose 800x600 60Hz (the max 4:3 resolution for my projector). Since the Apple TV is natively widescreen, it seems to accomplish this change be stretching the image vertically; but it basically works because the Apple TV home screen fills up the projector screen. However, when I turn on Airplay Mirroring on my iPad, the image does not fill up the screen. The Apple TV still puts a pillarbox on the image, so I end up with a distorted, square image of my iPad screen. It's the right height - the max 600 pixels for my projector - but it's not as wide as it should/could be.
Is there a setting that I'm missing? I understand that the Apple TV has to stretch its home screen image to accommodate the 4:3 resolution, but I think it should be smart enough to realize that if it's receiving a 4:3 image from the iPad and sending it out to a 4:3 TV, it doesn't need to pillarbox the image.
Before you answer - this is not a problem with the projector settings, and my Apple TV is not defective. You could simulate what's happening on your Apple TV, even if it's hooked up to a widescreen TV. In the Apple TV settings, change the TV Resolution to 800x600 as mentioned above (or any other of the 4:3 options). Now go to the Apple TV home screen, and note the amount of space the image is taking up on your screen (on a widescreen TV, it will be pillarboxed, and it will look like it's been squished horizontally). Then turn on Airplay mirroring on the iPad, and you'll see that the iPad image does not have the same width as the Apple TV home screen and it looks square/squished.
Also, while my projector does have a zoom function, it will not magnify the small iPad mirror image correctly (if I were to leave the Apple TV and projector on a 16:9 setting). It cuts off the top and sides. But even if it didn't crop the image, it's a digital zoom, so that option still won't fix the fact that I'm not getting a full 800x600 image on the projector. The same problem would apply if I were to move the projector farther away from the screen (so that the widescreen image takes up the full height of the projector screen, while spilling off the sides). I'll still have a lower resolution image, which isn't ideal since I'm often showing text on the screen through Keynote. Also, widescreen videos wouldn't fit on the screen, and I can't move the projector easily because it's fixed to the ceiling.
Sorry for the long explanation. Any ideas? I'd really appreciate some insight.

We have the same problem, and not only with ipads. Macbook Air is doing something similar. it can only use airplay with 1080 and 720 resolution, so the image is squeezed on a 4:3 projector. We use AppleTV 3 and Mountain Lion OS. We use ATVPRO from Kanex.
Apple must get its act together and fix this, they promise gold and green forests, but nothing works.
    DO SOMETHING!

  • IPad mirror shows up in 4:3 aspect

why doesn't apple tv show ipad mirror in widescreen and only in 4:3 aspect ratio - the advertisements clearly show photos in full screen - am I missing something or is this misleading advertising

    Hi,
It is not false advertising but it is app dependend though; i.e. an app can take advantage of your whole 16:9 real estate like Real Racing or Apple Video app while others app may not have been designed for that.  Most video playback apps will be full screen.
Mirroring your iPad app pages will be in 4:3 as it is the aspect ratio of the iPad.  It wouldn't make sense to present wider pages as it wouldn't match what you are seing on your iPad.

  • IPad mirroring in the classroom problem???

A quick question - I am a teacher using a 3rd gen Apple TV with an iPad to allow wireless mirroring in my classroom.  It works brilliantly. However, how do I prevent other iOS devices from connecting to the Apple TV when the iPad is being used?  For example - imagine a student had an iPod touch or iPhone connected to the same WiFi network - what could we do to prevent them trying to take over the screen in the middle of a lesson?  I know that I can pair a remote to stop other Apple remotes from controlling the Apple TV. Surely there is a way of doing this in terms of iPad mirroring?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Setting an airplay password, we'll restrict use of the Apple TV to only those devices where the password has been entered.

  • Ipad mirroring on Apple TV getting black screen after os upgrade to 7.0.3

Ipad mirroring works in 7.0.2. After upgrading to 7.0.3, on mirroring the screen goes black. Do we need to upgrade Apple TV or is this something else?

I have the same problem since my upgrade to iOS 8. black screen, no mirroring. It worked perfect until the latest iOS 7 version on my iPad 2

  • Aspect ratio of iPad mirror is not 4:3 when mirrored with Apple TV

Hi Everyone - I have just bought an Apple TV 3 and installed the device yesterday. I am using an LG HDTV and an iPad3. Everything works fine except one thing: When I mirror my iPad in landscape on the TV it appears with a wrong aspect ratio. This means I am NOT seeing a 4:3 picture of my iPad content on the screen, it rather looks like a 1:1 ratio. So the picture is "pressed together" from the left and the right. Any ideas how to solve the problem?
Before you answer - I am not talking about the black bars that appear when you mirror the 4:3 iPad on a 16:9 TV screen. This is not my problem and I know that black bars will appear eventually. I just do not get the proper aspect ratio of the iPad 4:3 on the TV screen - it rather appears as a square on the screen. This is only when I select mirroring - using airplay to see movies, youtube etc work perfectly fine.
Thanks very much for the help.

I have now reset my TV but unfortunately the problem remains. I also do not have the possibility to set the horizontal / vertical stretch of the TV when the input signal is via HDMI - so also no option.
I could actually live with the wrong ratio presentation when mirroring the iPad.
What I find really annoying is that my photos do not scale properly. When I start a slideshow on Aple TV from the iPad, the photos, which have been taken in a 2:3 aspect ratio, do not come up properly on the TV screen. They are pressed together from the sides, so people are too thin (well - some may like it but that is a different topic ).
Apple TV works totally fine with all other applications, ie YouTube videos. These are presented perfectly! This is why I think it has something to do with how photos are sent to Apple TV - this must be different from videos and maybe somewhere there is the reason.
If you have any other ideas I would appreciate your help. Thanks

  • Ipad mirroring or streaming for quality

I now have two ways of streaming music and movies from my ipad and i phone.to my speakers and tv.
    Both use appletv.
One is to connect using airplay and the other is to use mirroring.
Is there any difference in the quality of media when these methods are compared?
    Thanks

Video buffering can be adjusted at client side within your
    SWF file,
    which plays FLV.
    >Streaming on the other hand will calculate
    >the speed at which the visitor is trying to
    >connect
It is easy to do the same using special bandwidthmeter. I saw
    several
such SWF-based tricks, which all loads a file of known size
    and
measure downloading time. Then you can switch between
    different video
sources depending on the the calculated bandwidth value.
    >and serve up different quality (size) videos
    >depending on client connection.
And this is also doable by simple PHP script, delivering
    video file to
your client. Just create a file reading cycle with short
    pauses within
it, defined by the average delivery bandwidth preset value. I
    use such
method and it works really good for a more or less stable
    cable
channels. The only disadvantage relatively to true streaming
    is that
such method works not so good with VBR streams. Because it
    has no
information about real bitrate of each portion delivered.
    Therefore
you need to add some extra bandwidth portion for some
    unpredictable
delivery issues. E.g. if your video has 256 kbps and your
    audio has 64
kbps it doesn't mean that your total bandwidth preset value
    should be
320 kbps. It should be done a bit greater, for example 350 to
    380
kbps. That will work for any case.

  • IPad mirroring issue

    Can anyone help?
To mirror an iPad to my TV works well but as soon as I try to start to stream on-demand tv from an iPad to the TV the connection between the TV and iPad is lost. Why this happens?
I have tried with two iPads. I haven't upgraded to iOS version 7.1. or newer.
    Thanks for any help!

app developers can choose to block airplay mirror from working with their app if they so choose
    no way around that

  • Multiple iPad mirroring woes

    Hello,
We have multiple AppleTVs in classrooms throughout school, with teachers mirroring their iPads to them.
Teachers report that the mirroring is very inconsistent and it drops very frequently, forcing them to reconnect constantly and it is becoming a real obstacle to using their iPad.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be the cause?
    Thank you in advance,

  • My iPad mirrors, and then quits.

My iPad 3rd Gen. mirrors through Apple TV on my flat screen for about 3 songs on Pandora, and then it just stops.  The iPad keeps playing, but stops mirroring.  It was working fine a few days back.  I can't figure out what changed.  Anybody got thoughts?  Thanks.

There are no iPad viruses or malware, unless you jailbreak your iPad.
Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • IPad mirror lock

Maybe a simple answer....Would like to use AirPlay, reflection, or  airserver to mirror Mac computer with iPad.  However as the Mac computer is connected to projector/apple TV  in classroom and students using iPad, I only want iPad to mirror computer, and not be able to change screen. Thoughts?

Some apps work in both landscape and portrait mode, so requires using the iPad side switch to lock to that orientation. If this is what you mean, as you have given little info to what you ate experiencing.
If you are using the iPad side switch to lock to the page orientation and this does not work, you need to go into settings tap general and then tap Lock rotation. When you cihoose Lock Rotation, toggle the screen-rotation switch on the side of the iPad to expose the orange dot, and your iPad will stay in either landscape or portrait.

  • Is there any plan to develop secure iPad mirroring over common ports?

We're very interested in offering our faculty the option of projecting their in-class lectures from their iPads. Unfortunately, the lack of security and the special WIFI ports required are making this very difficult for our facilities and security staff to implement in our wireless infrastructure. We feel there is a real potential benefit in new, more interactive lecturing styles that could come out of this practice. Is Apple aware of the desire for this, and if so, is there any sense of when a secure solution might be available?

AirPlay is only using pretty standard ports - 80, 443, 554, 3289 and 5353 - so it's not something most sites would have blocked or other normal network functions from most platforms won't work either. Hence is really shouldn't be a security issue. If you're blocking those ports, you may want to revisit that and see if it's really necessary. If you must block those, then AirPlay probably just isn't going to work for you. Changing would probably require Apple to revamp much of its networking structure and use even less common ports.
A more common issue in large institutions is the problem with dealing with multiple WiFi access points and the need to have the iPad and the Apple TV on the same subnet. Those are often more difficult issues to solve.
    Regards.

  • IPad Mirroring with HDMI - 1 works, 1 doesn't

    Hi-
I am trying to get my iPad to show up on my TV.  I have the HDMI adapter and 2 iPads (both are iPad 2).  Using the exact same connection, HDMI input, etc. one iPad works just fine and the other gives no on the TV.
I thought maybe there was something wrong with the connection in the iPad that's not working, but it charges just fine from the same slot.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi Judy,
Just to confirm that lately came the new strange "two-emails-thing", to my account too.
    Also:
"Why do I get the message in the first place that says the discussion has been updated when it still has the same number of questions and responses?"
The New Discussions software (Nov 11, 2005) is still worked on, working better and better every day.
Subscriptions though, have not gained much and are still close to unusable IMO...
I guess the "two-emails" new behaviour is part of some testings and attempts?
