"No iPod Connected" in iTunes under Edit - Preferences

I bought this 20gb clickwheel iPod from a friend as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend... I'm trying to install it on my PC first so I can put some songs on it so it is ready to go when I give it to him.
I do not have the original software that came with it when it was new.
I first plugged it in to my PC, and it just said it was charging. It then told me to go to www.apple.com/ipod/downloads to get the software updated.
Since I didnt have the software cd, i thought i'd need that before i got the updater - how can it update software if I never had it to begin with? But no - I called Apple and the guy said all I'd need is the latest iTunes and the software updater. So i updated iTunes, downloaded the updater...
Then, the ipod said "Do Not Disconnect" for about 30 minutes after the updater said "(Up To Date)" beside Version 3.1. In addition to that, the little picture of the ipod on the left hand side of that update screen is a pic of the U2 iPod, but I don't actually have the U2 iPod. Also, the serial number shown is the same as the one hard-coded in my iPod, so I have no idea what is up with that.
Then, said i clicked "Reformat". Then I Unplugged it and plugged it into the wall. I chose "english" and waited a minute... it didn't seem to want to do anything else, so i plugged it back into my computer. Same exact thing, with the picture of the U2 iPod in the window. Except this time, when I open My Computer, it says "IPOD" under the e: drive, whereas before it just said "removable disk". Also, in iTunes, under Edit -> Preferences and the iPod tab, it says "no ipod connected". I have no idea what to do next.

I just want to clarify as well, that there is no mention of an iPod on the left-hand side of iTunes under "Source". Also there is no icon on the bottom right side of iTunes so that I can disconnect safely. It is pretty much leaving me no options for disconnecting. I just tried reformatting again, to no avail.

You can only sync to one computer.
You would have to transfer purchases, but the apple ID would need to be the same.
Or find a 3rd party app to transfer content.

If it happens again and the reset (home + power buttons) doesn't work, just let the battery drain; you'll know when the screen shuts off. Charge it back up and it should be fine. Frankly, I'm surprised this worked for you. Usually I hear people with this problem say that holding both buttons doesn't work, and they have to do the battery drain.
If the issue is incurable next time, you have a one-year warranty from the date of purchase.

  • My ipod connects to itunes and the computer i'm using but won't let me edit playlists or add/ take away music

I have an iPod touch and whichever device i use to edit my music has the same issue:
i can connect to the computer and my ipod is connected to itunes but i can't edit any of the music through itunes.
    other issues include:
    - unable to view new playlists created through the ipod itself (since the problem occured)
    - unable to use the category tabs to view music by ratings, song names, bands, etc., through ipod (once connected to itunes) but option still available to view through itunes itself
    - unable to change any names etc., for playlists
i've checked for software updates and storage usage but all are fine, data analysis under systems reads as normal (the occassional music app crash but that was months before this problem had occurrred)
two thing that have happened recently:
    - my graphics/ screen thing-a-ma-bob for my macbook has gone funny (this was my primary devices for loading and editing music for my ipod) and has created difficulty in viewing things through my macbook screen. consequently i:
    - recently connected my ipod to the home computer instead as i'm having issues with my macbook (this is a pc but is again well looked after, systmes updates and current programs are all updated)
please could someone help or suggest options for me to try as i'm so confused and would really like to edit my music to my tastes
    thanks in advance!

You can only sync with one computer/iTunes library.
If y oare having problem with iTunes not related to syncing try posting in the iTunes for Mac forum

Otherwise try restoring the iPod from backup

  • One ipod connects to itunes but the other doesn't...?

I have 30GB ipod that works just fine with my labtop connecting to itunes and all. My problem is lately, when I try to connect my brothers nano to my computer, it shows the do not disconnect screen but that's it. I tried restarting his and the iPodService.exe thing but no luck. Why whould one work and not the other?

Have you had any luck with your second ipod? I actually have the same problem - I got one for myself and one as a gift. One of them connected to my network with no problem. The other one doesn't see any networks. I've restored it a couple times but I'm not willing to pay for the new software without knowing if that will fix the problem. I'm about ready to return it.

  • Songs won't show up black (they're gray) when ipod connected to iTunes

When I used to connect my iPod to the computer, the songs would show up as black in the "My Device" section. Now, however, they're showing up as gray. So, where I used to be able to click on one of the songs within "My Device" to play that song, now I have to play it from the Library. I had to reset the iPod (it started showing garbled German...yeah, that's right, garbled German)and, ever since then, it's been doing the aforementioned black/gray thing.
I can use the iPod fine when it's not plugged into the computer, but I'm stumped about how--and why--it has changed. Thanks, kids.

Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to sync automatically with iTunes. If you want to play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes:
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

I used Captivate 4 and Windows Vista when I made the discovery. It took me a while to figure out that this was the cause of my problems. Hopefully this is not an issue in Captivate 5. After what I heard the through away the old source code. Good thinking! Soon my PC will get an update from 4 to 5.

  • Song Name Field Not Showing up when Ipod connected to ITunes

I have one of the first IPOD's (15GB). When connected to ITunes and I click on music to see my whole list, it does not display the "song names". I've been through all the help screens, and they say to "check mark" the song name field. When you bring that up, there is NO choice for song name field. My wife also has the same IPOD and it displays the song names just fine...also without an available choice for song name. I have found a work around and that is bringing up the Get Info on a song and copying the name over to the "sort name" field, which there is a choice to display that. However typing this on every song is way to long as I have 3,000 songs in there. Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks!

That's what I thought also, but when expanding the window, it still doesn't show. However on 2 older playlists, when I first got it, the name column shows, but not on the "master list" of all songs, and also not on new playlists.
When I connect my wifes IPOD, same one, it shows up on every playlist and the master. I have had this issue for about 2 years through different Itunes versions. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that when I first got the IPOD I used "music match" instead of Itunes? Or it could just be an issue with the IPOD. I've resisted doing a restore and wiping everything out as I've switched desktop computers and quite a few of those songs are not on my hard drive. I can work around it, but it's a hassle.
I just figured out how to make the song name show, but using the "sort name" field, but now I'm wondering if there is a way to copy the name to the sort name field in a mass conversion instead of doing it one by one.

i've had my ipod since august and everything has been fine, up until now, i've just connected my ipod, but itunes has picked up the fact it's connected via the usb, it's simply charging...

    Hi dazzy001,
First off, try these five troubleshooting steps, as they tend to fix a lot of iPod connection problems:

If that doens't seem to help, then have you checked out the suggestions in this Knowledge Base article?

  • No iPod recognized in iTunes-either in preferences or Sources.

I hadn't bought any new tunes for ages--maybe a year, so haven't tried to sync my old iPod. When I finally did try today after purchasing some new tunes, I found the preferences showed I had no iPods (or iPhones, okay don't have one) authorized. Obviously on the iTunes side panel there is no "Sources", it just starts with Music, Videos etc. How do I get my iPod reauthorized? The box for items authorized is grayed out, I can't find an "add" command anywhere.
FYI , sorry it took so long to mark my last question resolved. It was answered quickly, and I figured out what I did wrong, but this site is not that intuitive, or wasn't responding when I tried previously. So a belated thank you.
Thanks in advance for this one.
    SSummers

Sorry, wrong verbage. Under preferences /sync/ iPods backed up on this computer the box is empty, and no way to add my iPod, which I had been able to sync previously. I suspect the problem has to do with the fact iTunes has updated several times since last time I synced my iPod. No, nothing shows up when my iPod is plugged into the computer (directly, not thru a hub).
Also, I just realized the iPod freezes when attached to the computer, but is okay when on its own.
