No iPod is recognized by my iMac

Recently my my iMac stopped recognizing my fifth generation iPod with video. It is not found by iTunes or the finder. This happened after I tried to connect my sister-in-law's third generation Nano. I'm not sure why that would cause this to happen, but that's when things got funny and so I thought I'd put that on the table. My iMac will now not recognize any iPod -my fifth generation, my wife's second generation Nano or my sister-in-law's third generation Nano.
I've tried the usual remedies (the five R's) but to no avail. I haven't actually uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes because I don't have everything backed up and I don't want to lose anything. Can I do this, though? Can I drag iTunes into the trash and then just download and reinstall iTunes? Will that work? Will I lose my library (or anything in it) in the process?
I'm looking forward to getting an iPhone for my birthday in a month, but now I'm afraid that my iMac won't recognize it.
2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 1 GB ram
OS X 10.4.10
iTunes 7.4.2 (4)

No, it would have no impact at all.
You could have a corrupted, or missing, iPodDriver.kext file. 3 ways to replace it:
1. Do an archive and restore
2. Use a 3rd party extractor and get it from your install disk
3. Copy it from another Mac running Tiger.
It is located at System > Library > Extensions

  • IPod not recognized in older iMac

    Hello out there!
I have an older iMac probably 1999 G3 (green and grey) and it wont recognize my 80 gig iPod (1year old). It is using the standard USB to iPod cable. This cable is good since it works on my Macbook. when I plug it in the iPod icon does not appear in either iTunes, the desktop or the HD. I have an older iPod and it uses the Firewire to iPod cable...and is fine??? Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Again, please post the version of OS your iMac is running and what version of iTunes you have. It's going to be really difficult for anyone to offer advice without having basic information about your setup.

  • New 4th gen ipod not recognized by imac

My new 4th gen nano is not recognized by my imac, when i plug it in the message comes up 'Inserted disk contains no files OSX can read. To continue with disk click ignore.' After clicking ignore the nano is not to be found. I have a G4 running OSX 10.3.9, is that my problem? Is there a fix or not, do i have to update to the latest OSX?
    Thank You. Slang3

Yes. Refer to the *Mac system requirements* of Apple - iPod nano - Technical Specifications (or on the back of the box the Nano came in) for the minimum OS & iTunes versions you will need.

  • IPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade

I upgraded to OS4 on Saturday July 10th with no problems. On Sunday (July 11) I used my iPod quite a bit. I was at a friend's house and the battery was getting low so he charged it through his computer. It charged completely and we continued using it the rest of the day. I plugged it in to my PC to charge it Sunday night and it was not recognized at all (for charging OR for syncing) through any of the USB hubs. I asked my friend the method he used to charge it that day and he confirmed it was via computer. Monday night I tried charging it through a friend's iMac. It charged halfway, though it still wasn't recognized. Tuesday morning I tried to charge it on the same computer and I got the "too much power drawn from the USB hub - HUB deactivated" message on ANY of the HUBs. It still doesn't work on my own home computer (though it HAD been working Friday night and Saturday morning pre-OS4 installation).
I'm personally running Ubuntu 10.04 but obviously only was able to charge the iPod on that system. Anytime I want to sync or download music I restart to Windows Vista (and iTunes).
I do also have apps installed, but nothing new from the previous OS - (I know that blaming third party apps is a common cop-out answer for apple techs).
I hope this wasn't too confusing. My real problem is simply described by my subject line: iPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade. What follows is simply everything I've done to troubleshoot. The only thing I haven't tried is restore...because my iPod isn't even recognized by iTunes.
I would greatly appreciate any help or stories related stories/situations. Strength (and hopefully solutions) in numbers!
    Best,
    Dan

Assuming you haven't got the cords mixed up with another, older iPod, it sounds like you have a couple of problems:
    1. Your computer's USB ports have quit working. Reboot your computer and see if they reactivate.
    2. Your friend's iMac generated that message because you tried to charge the device from the low power keyboard USB port. iPods need to be charged off one of the main USB ports or a powered hub.
    3. iPods not being recognized by iTunes can be caused by 1) wrong cable; 2) non-functioning USB ports; 3) iTunes not being the correct version for the iPod OS; and finally 4) Apple Mobile Device Services driver is either stopped, missing, or disabled.
To troubleshoot a problem with Apple Mobile Device Services, see the Apple support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567

  • 2nd Gen iPad Mini stopped working yesterday.  Won't startup under and configuration and is not recognized by my iMac.

2nd Gen iPad Mini stopped working yesterday.  Won't startup under and configuration and is not recognized by my iMac.  I believe it upgraded itself to iOS 8 (????)

    Hey Kenneth,
So it sounds as if your iPad is not responding at all when you try to turn it on, is that correct? If so, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
If you get it to start up and it is still not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, use the steps in this article to troubleshoot that issue -
If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Happy computing,

  • IPod causes long boot to iMac

I have a 5.5 generation iPod 80gig and if it is connected to my iMac (24inch) the iMac will not reboot ... as soon as I unplug the iPod the iMac boots... any one have any advice... thanks... Van

To enable/disable disk mode, plug your iPod into your iMac and open iTunes. When your iPod is recognized by iTunes, click on it's icon in the sidebar of iTunes and click the "Summary" tab at the top of the page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see 4 checkboxes. One of them will say "Enable Disk Mode". Check that box and click the "Apply" button in the bottom right of the window.
Enabling disk mode allows you to put files on your iPod as if it was an external hard disk. You can also put files on your iPod through iTunes when disk mode is enabled.

  • Both  my iPods not recognized by iTunes

    Hi all
I have an old mini and a 1st gen shuffle. Both have stopped being recognized by iTunes at the same time and both are working fine (ie I can charge them on a separate charger and they play OK). I've tried different USB ports - nothing. Just says "do not disconnect" though I see it nowhere on my computer. I tried to download iTunes again but "mounting failed". Should this give me any clues?
I'd appreciate any help - a search on this topic showed many unanswered questions like this.

  • USB Device for IPOD not recognized by Windows, whether ipod connected or no

During the past few days I have received a pop up error message from (I would think) Windows that the USB device is not recognized. I have the USB plug for the ipod connected (as always)but the ipod isn't even connected. It keeps popping up like every few seconds that the usb device is not recognized.
When I attach the ipod itself, the ipod is recognizing it because it powers up. But, it took 10 times just to get the ipod to recognize through itunes. It updated, then immediately upon completion, windows again starting giving repeated error messages that the usb device wasn't recognized.
I have downloaded the newest itunes but I had it on my system for 4 days with no problems whatsoever. I don't think that's it. No other system changes.
I've deleted my temp files and cache. Also did a "disk clean up" and "defrag." It's still doing it.
    Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem. Ever since I upgraded to version 7, iTunes & my PC no longer recognise my iPod, and it therefore won't sync.
It's not the USB port (other devices work in it), I rebooted my iPod and re-installed iTunes, I've tried stopping and starting the iPod Service (but can't see my iPod in My Computer). When I run the Diagnostics it says iPod connection failed. I've even bought a new USB cable but that doesn't work either.
This is driving me up the wall. Is there a glitch with iTunes 7?
Can anyone help me out?? Thanks

  • 1st generation iPod not recognized on Vista - drivers / hardware not found

I have a new PC, which now very unfortunately runs Windows Vista as an operating system - I have installed iTunes latest version 7.4 but still the PC does not recognize my iPod or doesn't find the hardware - can anyone help?

  • IPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs

iPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs. I have about 1400 songs and just got 40 more, and before I bought those 40 my iTunes was wiped out. I still had the files so my iTunes was filled up again. Now, when I connect my iPod to the computer it is recognized and then it says "do not disconnect" then after a few seconds it says "ipod update is complete- ok to disconnect". but it did not upload any songs. How can I make it work?

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
Then restore your iPod to factory settings.

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes when not in disk mode

My ipod nano 6th gen. recently has stopped working.  I am able to charge it for a short amount of time but have to reset the ipod everytime I go to turn it on.  I wanted to update the software but when I plug it into my comp that I have previously updated this ipod on, it says that the device is not recognized.  I followed steps on the support page and discovered that the ipod is recognized as a device and as a ipod in disk mode but when I reset the ipod back to normal mode it is once again not recognized.  I don't have a problem with my comp or itunes when I connect my iphone or ipod touch so I'm trying to figure out how to get the ipod to work.  any suggestions.

I have kind of the same problem with my 60gb ipod with colour display.
everything was working fine up until last sunday when i plugged into my laptop and I got the 'folder with exclamation mark' icon
i reset it and put it into disk mode but when i connect it to my laptop it doesnt turn up on itunes or windows. occasionally it will appear then disappear again so i can't restore it to factory settings.
i did manage to get it to appear in itunes and click on the restore button but i got the message that it couldnt be restored and there was a problem with the 'firmware' but before i could try anything else it disappeard from itunes again.
i have been told that the problem may be with my USB cable so i will buy another one at the weekend but if that doesnt work does anyone else have any ideas as i have tried nearly everything.
i personally think my ipod caught me looking at my friends new 80gb video ipod and got jealous!!!!!

Sorry that your iPod isn't recognized. The following articles should help you sort out what is going on and get your iPod working again. I didn't see if you are using OS X or Windows, so I included the articles for each.

  • Ipod not recognized by Itunes, please help!!

    Hi,
When I connect my ipod to my computer the follwing message comes up-
"USB device not recognized- One of the USB devices attatched to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it."
I've tried everything I can think of... downloading the latest software updates and the latest versions of itunes etc but still no progress.
When I attempt to configure the ipod using the software supplied with it or one of the software updates issued on the site the ipod and computer both freeze and nothing happens.
The Ipod is recognized by my computer but there is no sign of it in itunes.
    Has anyone got any suggestions!?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks, James

    >I should mention that on my second try installing it I was able to upload songs to it, however it seemed that the songs I unchecked made it and the checked ones did not.
Hmmm... it may have to do with the song format?

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes 5.0.1

    Hi,
I recently formated my hard drive to reinstall windows xp pro.
I installed my iPod and iTunes 5.0.1 and now, my iPod is recognized by windows but not by iTunes =/
I tried to uninstall then reinstall iPod drivers and iTunes but nothing changed...
how can i make it work ?
(it worked perfectly before i format and reinstall windows)

Yes, I also have tried to restore using the iPod updater available from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/. I have also tried the restore given to me via hp.com which led me to http://www.apple.com/ipod/hp/download/. Note, I have an hp+iPod 30G Photo. I have found that I could only get it to work using iTunes 4.9. Any machine which had 5.x.x installed would not work. Maybe this is a bug in the iPod software, or the iTunes, iPodService, or iTunesHelper?
