No joy with AOL chat

Hi
New here, I set up my neice's Webcam (Logitech) tonite on the PC they are running XP. I have an iMac g5 isight , we both have AOL AIM accts, but when we tried to connect she recieved a message stating" XXXXX is not using a client that supports AOL Video Messenger.
Any ideas, I have searched some of the forum, but cannot find anything close to this issue.
Thanx in advance and Happy Holidays

I noticed that I am running AIM 4.7 on my mac, would this also be an issue????<<<< YES is does not work for video on a Mac use iChat.
Are you using AIM 4.7 or iChat to talk to your niece.
Tony
But Tony,
iChat doesn't work on comunicating with a PC does it? I am trying to set up my web cam on my PC and I'm running into the VERY same issue.
Can anyone clearly list the steps adn protocal required to have a Mac comumicate with the PC
Cheers!
Brian

  • IChat behind NAT can't video chat with AOL IM

I've been trying to get iChat to video chat with AOL IM for a month, with intermittent success. iChat to the apple test accounts works perfectly, but with AOL IM it always says I didn't respond. I finally used a packet sniffer to debug the protocol communication, and found the problem.
My problem is my mac is behind a NAT firewall. iChat doesn't properly detect my public IP address. When it negotiates the video chat with AOL IM, it gives the local, private IP address only useful behind the NAT, not the public IP the NAT uses. I can see it right there in the video chat request packet.
Apparently, when talking iChat to iChat, the programs ignore the IP address given in the negotiation, using the source IP address of the packet instead, which avoids the NAT problem. AOL IM on the other hand, ignores the source IP of the packet, and believes the (incorrect) address in the request. So AOL's attempt to set up a video channel goes off into the weeds. Opening ports is irrelevant.
The reason it works for me part of the time is, my NAT happens to implement the "DMZ" functionality by giving the computer inside the same IP address as the public IP address. So it works for me if and only if I put my mac in the DMZ. In that state, iChat gets the right IP, the one addressable from the outside world.
The NAT firewall that works (provided I put the mac in the DMZ) is a 2wire homeportal 1800. I've also tried with a DLink DI-524. It doesn't do the IP address trick, so no luck at all with it.
It would be great if iChat would use a trick like http://checkip.dyndns.org/ to get the real, external, public address of my computer, and use THAT to negotiate the video chat with AOL IM.

    Hi Jim,
On devices that do not have UPnP then yes it is either Port Forwarding with all 29 ports if doing Jabber, Bonjour and AIM or Port Triggering with fewer entries if you have that.
If you have either UPnP or Port Triggering then you can effectively keep DHCP as they allow multiple computers and the entries or turning it on in the case of UPnP do not point to a specific computer.
Staic addresses are best with Port Forwarding as there is a possiblity that the IP address will change with DHCP.
The pics on this site show only Port Forwarding.
There are however several versions of this router and also variations as to numbers in different countries so in fact you may have UPnP. Firmware updates from Netgear may also give you UPnP.

  • Does AOL  AIM work with I chat

    Ok
lets say i go to AOL AIM and sign up as Coffeehouse Schmuck
can i instant message AND recieve instend messages from my dial-up Aol buddies with I-chat on my Mac
None of my freinds have MACS
but i still wanna IM them

No, iChat will work with AIM and you do not need to download AIM for Mac to get it to work.
To remove one of your buddies, select it in your buddy list, then in the Menu Bar, choose Buddies > Remove Buddy...
iChat also supports the Jabber IM protocol, and it seems from your post that iChat tries to connect to your buddy using Jabber instead of the AIM protocol & network. Why, I can't explain. Maybe you can get more help in the iChat forum.

  • Bizarre activity with AOL Mail

Suddenly today, all AOL mail upon opening flashes for less than one second, thereupon a search page for Bing appears. I have disabled the Search Toolbar, restarted, installed the blocking app for www.bing.com.
    No joy.
AOL Mail works swell with Chrome, so this is an annoyance not a disaster. Still...

    Hello, Welcome to discussions.
AOL on iPhone should be setup as an IMAP account. It seems like your account on the iPhone is acting like a POP account.
You want to ensure when you add an AOL account to Iphone you go to
-Settings - Mail,Contacts,Calendars- Add account - AOL Mail - Type in your info. And save. This will save the account as an IMAP account.
You may also wish to check your iPhone Software version and update if it has not been updated in awhile as there has been some mail improvements.
You can check your version by connecting to iTunes on the Summary screen or via Settings-General-about.

  • NX Ultra with AOL IM- Windows 95

I just bought my parents a webcam for Christmas. They are trying to install it down in Florida. They are able to see themselves via the camera on their computer (so at least that part is working), but they are not able to use it in conjunction with AOL for live Video chat.
They have an old machine running Windows 98. I think I saw somewhere that you needed Windows XP to do Video IM, although I am hoping that there would be a way around this? My parents rarely use the computer and don't want to upgrade (I don't think that Windows XP would run well on their machine), just want to see their grandchildren on the webcam!
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...
    Frank

    Hi Colin,
Just had another thought on the matter...
By 'not supported' do you mean that it could/does 'work' but Cisco won't support (TAC) issues with it?
I had a look at this article here:
    http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/microsoft-announce-windows-live-messenger-xmpp-access
Which indicates that Live Messenger is now open to the public via XMPP. Is this a case that Cisco Jabber needs to be coded specially to connect with Live Messenger? Or is it simply a setting of values somewhere?
I do recall that pre-Cisco Jabber was able to communicate with MSN folk.
    Your thoughts? (officially/unofficially)
    Cheers,
    Brett

  • The kind of help you get with HP Chat...it's a real good way to spend an hour on your weekend

I copied my recent session with HP Chat so people may see how inadequate out-sourcing to other countries is.  After nearly an hour, this professional tech agent thought it would be helpful to have me create a file in my C: drive to see if it got there.
This problem is a widespread problem, as I have found that many people are having an issue with their D: drive getting full even though their computer is new.  My hard drive has 6GB, and Memory 1 TB.  There is no way that a stay at home Mom, who only sends an occasion email should have a full D: (recovery) drive.
Some people suspect that this is a defect within the system, that it is letting in files, or possibly duplicating them into this Drive.
    I Got Nowhere in nearly an hour....here is the Chat Session;

I see some people are so desperate that they go to help forums and actually take a strangers advice by changing settings and what not.  One person with this same problem took someone's advice and changed the "D:" drive to another letter, now it won't show up and he cannot restore his system now.  Sad.

    kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • Mac Mini not working with AOL Cable modem

    All,
I just bought a brand new Mac Mini but it not working with AOL. My windows XP PC working well with AOL but not with mac mini. Any suggestions? thanks
    Hung

I just found an interesting thing that i brought my mac mini to Apple store where i bought it. Hook up with store cable, it can go thru to internet with out sign on AOL. ALso I can connect to AOL very easy. Brought it back home, I tried to open browser w/o sign on AOL like i did at Apple store, it did not work. I also tried to sign on AOL alone, still not work either. The weird thing is, my other Windows XP computer is working well with AOL. I called customer service of AOL for help, who takes care the Mac computer, asked me to follow the simple procedure that I already did before i called them like unplug cable modem, restart computer...etc. Nothing new, and then they transfered me back and forth between Mac and Windows specilist with no help. I was on phone with them for 2 hours yesterday. I'm very disappoint with AOL customer service with the way they serve the customer. I'm thinking to cancel membership with AOL where i stay with them more than 10 years, and look for another cable or DSL ISP. Now I'm packing the Mac Mini back to box and bring it to Apple store to return it. Next thing, is search around which ISP, who supports the Apple comp. I'm living at Los Angeles area where's very easy to find a local ISP Verizon, Earthlink, Road Runner... I'll be back to buy a new Mac when i get the internet ready. I love Apple computer, and i want to have it.

I am setting up ipads for use in an elementary, and I would like the "home screen" to be the apps, rather than the default with the chat, mail, etc icons.  how do I change that?

Depending on exactly what you want to do, there are a couple of ways of handling this. You may want to access teh user guide for some ideas: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf
In particular, check the sections on Customizing iPad and Settings > Restrictions.

  • I cant get my wireless or any internet to work with AOL

I have a Motorola Modem and a Linksys router. I get my internet through Roadrunner but i access it through AOL, my Macbook says the Airport is connected to the internet but Safari wont allow me to open a webpage, it says the server stopped working. Additionally when i try to log on to AOL it Warns me that I need to log into my ISP first before AOL.
    Please Help.

Once your RR modem has been setup properly, either computer should be able to connect directly through it to the internet. OK?
    read carefully...
Then, putting the router in place, connecting ethernet from modem into WAN port on router. Reboot both of those devices. With me?
Now. plug mac via ethernet into router LAN port 1
Plug PC via ethernet into router port 2...OK?
Reboot mac and PC. (go ahead).
What happens now? anyone, or no one?
No one?...power down modem. power down router. wait. Power up router, then power up modem. Go into router's admin panel, and confirm that it's getting DHCP from Internet modem. Refresh, Renew.
Now then, what does all this have to do with AOL?
Why do you need AOL with RR high speed?
Chek AOL mail at aol.com (check mail, look for the mail link)
Leave the AOL software alone for now.

  • When will Firefox version 27.1 be compatible with aol toolbar used with my iMac OS version 10.7.5? I cannot install version Firefox 27.1 until fix is in place

I have an iMac desktop Operating System version 10.7.5.
Current Firefox Version 26 allows me to use AOL toolbar.
When I went to download / install updated Firefox version 27.1, message that appeared
said this version was incompatible with AOL toolbar.
Installation could only be complete if I disabled AOL toolbar which is NOT an option.
Please advise when this Firefox version 27.1 incompability issue will be fixed.
    Thanks in advance.
edit: removed your mail address from public display, since the only thing it will attract are spam bots. you will be notified per mail once somebody replies to the thread. (philipp)

The message likely said it was the toolbar that was not compatible with Firefox 27.0.1. It is up to the Extension authors to make their Extension compatible with Firefox not the other way.
Unless the Extension is ties with a application with a binary like with Antivirus toolbars, the majority of Extensions that have been compatible since say Firefox 10.0 should still work for example.
Have you checked for updates for this Aol toolbar extension?

  • Built in iSight not working with Google chat?

    Hi all,
I recently updgraded to Mac OS X version 10.7.2 for my Intel based iMac.  Since then, the built in iSight camera does not work with Google Chat. It does work with iChat and Photobooth though.
I reistalled the Google chat plug in (or I guess I installed it again).  I ran a check, and my software updates are current.  I tried the power down, unplug the power cord, wait 15 seconds routine, and that didn't work either.
When I go in to Mail Settings in gmail, click Chat, and then Verify your Settings, I don't see anything in the window next to it - just black.
Does anyone have any good ideas to help?  Using google chat is just a lot more convenient for me than using iChat...
    Thanks!

    Hi,
For some time now the Google Web Browser Video Chat plug-in (Also and automatic part of Installing Chrome) has been an issue in relation to going to Video Chat sites that use the Flash Plug-in.
My Flash Plug-in in Lion is version 11.1 r102
I don't have the Google one so I could not tell you the latest from them.
I am not sure that Google are moving very fast, if at all on this matter.
It could be as soon as either Flash makes an update it ruins the progress Google have made.
