No Keep in Dock option

Hi, new user here. We're running eMacs in a small school computer lab (15 total), on 10.4.11. When I log in to any eMac as a workstation (where I log in with administrative rights), I'd like to add applications to the dock. However as I drag the apps over to the dock, they are not accepted, they only bounce back to where they originally were. I tried to open the apps I want to keep in the dock--when they are there and opened, I control-clicked on the icon so get the "Keep in Dock" option but it wasn't there. It only says "Show in Finder" and "Quit." I'd love to get this sorted out. Many thanks in advance!

It's not totally clear from your description what the set up is... But am I right in thinking you have an administrator account on each eMac plus a managed "workstation" account for students?
If correct, log into the admin account (logging out of workstation first) and go to System Preferences/Accounts. Unlock the padlock icon. Click the workstation account icon, go to the Parental Controls tab, check Finder & System, hit Configure button... In the tab that comes up, check "Modify the Dock" button.
Log into the workstation account; you should now be able to drag applications to the dock.

Have you tried 'reset home directory permissions and ACLs' on your home folder? Apple has a tool to do this. it's in the reset password utility, located on the install disk that was included with your computer.
To see how to boot to the install disk, and access the reset password utility check out steps 1 through 4 of "Resetting the original administrator account password" in Mac OS X: Changing or resetting an account password do not do steps 5 though 8.
Instead, use the pull down menu "Select a user of this volume to reset their password" to select your account, and then click on the "Reset" button at the very bottom of the window.
then perform steps 8 through 10.

Some Apps Won't 'Keep In Dock' or Alias

I have have posted before regarding an app, MarkSpace NoteBook, that refuses to 'Keep In Dock' and stay where I place it in the dock.
I now have the same issue with Parallels Desktop. It does exactly the same thing.
Opening the app is OK, it appears in the dock but it ignores the 'Keep In Dock' option and keeps moving itself to the last icon on the right. Closing the app causes it to disappear from the dock.
For some reason I can also not create an alias for the Parallels app.
I'm not that new to Macs but I do not have much experience with problem solving. Things seem to have just worked up until now.
I have just reinstalled all my old apps onto my brand new MacBook. Never had this issue before on my old MacBook, only since I have installed this app on my new MacBook so I think its related to something on the new machine rather than the app.
Uninstalls and reinstalls don't help. Neither does removing the dock preference files.
Any ideas appreciated as I'm starting to get concerned over the stability of my new machine.

Yes I have tried that as well.
I now believe it MAY be related to me sync'ing my dock through .Mac and then stopping the dock sync'ing.
I am currently trying to reset the .Mac stuff across my 2 machines and ensure the dock stuff is not sync'd.
Any other ideas appreciated though I will post an update if I get around it.

How do I keep the dock on my main monitor?

Hi, I'm running OS X 10.9 on my MacBook Pro which is connected to a larger Multisync LCD monitor 90% of the time. I like to have the monitors set up so the larger one is the main one that has the menu bar and dock. When I upgraded to Maveric I cannot figure out how to keep the dock on the main monitor. Sometimes when I'm working it will disapear from the main monitor and show up on the laptop monitor. If I reboot the doc goes back to the larger main monitor but I cannot figure out how to do this while I'm working. Rebooting is not an effective option.

In System Preferences > Mission Control > UNcheck "Displays have seperate spaces". Your second monitor will now function the way it did in 10.8.

Safari will not "keep in dock"

Recently Safari (v3.1.2) has refused to stay in the dock. If I drag the icon to the dock from the applications folder, it disappears in a few seconds. When the application is open, it's icon sits on the right hand side of the dock, just like any other application which is not normally in the dock. Whilst it's there, I've tried selecting "keep in dock" from the right-click menu. But when I quit, it disappears again. Also, whilst Safari is open, if I try to move the icon from the far right to any other place on the dock it zips back to the right hand side after a few seconds, and then disappears when I quit.
I have searched this and other forums and it seems like I'm not the only person to encounter this problem. The only "solution" I have found posted is a complete re-install! I have tried deleting the dock.plist and dock.db files. After I restart, the default collection of dock items appears, including Safari. Seconds later, however, it disappears. I just cannot get it to stay where I want it and it's driving me mad! Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

"Keep in Dock" not there

I want to keep icons in the dock. When I hold down the mouse (even tried control-click) the "keep in dock" choice isn't there. I deleted the plist for the dock, didn't fix it. Any ideas? My "test" account which hasn't had any changes to it at all, does the same thing. I thought I saw a keep in dock choice before.
I recently installed ONYX but don't know if the "keep in dock" didn't show up before that.

"Keep in Dock" will only appear in running applications that are not already chosen to be in the Dock. Launch an application from the Application folder that is not in your Dock and then either click & hold or right click and you will see it.

It's a weakness in how the new interface calculates positions of docked items. Maybe it gets fixed/ changed for CS5. I have my own peeves with the system, but in Dreamweaver. We all have our small burdens to bear, I guess. ;-)

How to keep the dock always on the main screen?

I have a Wacom Cintiq as my secondary screen, positioned below the main monitor of MacBook Pro
The problem is, that with this positioning, the Dock always jumps to the bottom of the Cintiq screen. I don't want it that way - I need to use Cintiq only as my drawing space, and keep the dock at the main screen. How can I do that (without repositioning the screens in the prefs)?

How do I remove the "Dock" option from the Apple Dropdown Menu

I work for a school district where I am continuosly having to go back into Mac labs and reverting the settings on the dock back to normal. Students are changing the size, position and content of the dock, as well as hiding the dock. These computers are used by students k-6 and the younger children are getting confused when they com in and they cannot find the dock or its not where it is supposed to be. I have been able to lock the sizing, position and content of the dock but am not finding a way to elimante the hiding of the dock. Preferably I would like to remove the "dock option from the Apple dropdown menu. Please help!!!!

This question was asked quite a while ago and the suggestion was to use Server Admin Tools, which I know nothing about. You'll have to look into that. If these Macs are running off a server, then this might work for you. I'm seeing that Server Admin Tools from Apple is still current.

How to keep drop down option to one field in a ztable

hi all,
i created one ztable in this table i have two fields
fieldnames are matnr and indicator.
now my requirement is i have to keep drop down option for indicator field. when i click on this field it has to show three vales 'X' OR 'Y' OR 'Z'.
anybody can tell me how to do this.

Declare the field value on the selection screen as shown below.
PARAMETERS: p_matnr LIKE ztable-field AS LISTBOX VISIBLE LENGTH 10.
and maintain those 3 values(X,Y and Z) at the domain level in that field of the Ztable.

Openbox Dock Options [solved]

I'm running OpenBox here and it hasn't a panel, which is ok for me. But when I run obconf, there is a place to set options about a 'dock'. What is this 'dock'?
I would notice the diference only if I was running something like pyPanel? Strange, because when I run xfce panel, changing the settings in obconf don't alter anything either.

Every window under X has a type assigned to it: most of them, as you'd expect, are "normal", but others are "dialog", "desktop", etc. It's so that the WM can treat these appropriately: a desktop window is always underneath everything else and doesn't have decorations, for example.
Openbox's "dock" options will affect any window whose type is "dock". I don't know if pyPanel is one of those. In my (limited) experience, a surprising number of these standalone panels aren't (at least, the Openbox prefs don't seem to affect them, so I assume they aren't - maybe Openbox is broken ).

Docking Option for the new Yoga

I just bought a ThinkPad Yoga. Very new to all of this. I would like to know if there are recommendations for a KVM switch so I can use the Yoga with my desktop and I am very interested in docking options. Can I use the enovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Docking Station (0A33970) with the Yoga effectively?

The ThinkPad Yoga uses OneLink and OneLink Pro docks. The ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock is compatible with ThinkPad Yoga, but I would go with the OneLink due to less driver issues (however currently there is some hardware issue with network on the TPY + OneLink, and Lenovo is looking into the issue).
