No keys working on 2011 MacBook Pro Keyboard

No keys work. Completely defective
Haven't SPILLED anything on the keyboard, but I did windex to clean and wipe the screen and decided to do the same on the keyboard to clean it. Didn't think this would cause any damage but could this be the reason? That's the only thing I can think of that could've caused the keyboard to be defective.
None of the keys are sticky though, and when you press them, all the keys feel as they would when the keyboard was functioning normally.
Looked up solutions, and in system preferances, under accesibility, mouse keys, slow keys, and my shortcuts(speak selected text when the key is pressed)  in dictation & speech is all disabled.
I've been using an on-screen keyboard so typing is significantly slower (using a different computer now)
Seeing if anyone has any last-ditch solutions that I could try before taking it to the apple store/getting a keyboard replacement.

steppJ,
did you spray Windex directly on the keyboard, or did you spray a cloth and then use the cloth to wipe the keyboard?

  • 2011 Macbook pro Keyboard Unresponsive

    Hi,
I have a 2011 17" Macbook Pro. I'd left it in a cupboard - working - for a few months, as I got an iPad and didn't use it so much.
Now, when I try to use it, the keyboard is moreorless totally unresponsive. I can use a bluetooth keyboard.
The only keys that seem to work (occasionally) are the 0 key - but this is registers as F9, and P and -. Sometimes when I press 1 of these keys, i can see from the on screen keyboard that it thinks all 3 are being pressed and held.
I know this seems like a hardware issue, but I'm really hoping someone can tell me it's not. I can't do a SMC reset at the buttons won't press.
    Any ideas?

    Hi DanBrown180,
Based on the information you have provided, it appears your MacBook Pro needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

  • Early 2011 Macbook Pro keyboard noise

My Macbook pro's keyboard has recently started making an aweful platic sound. My usage of the mbp has been very limited since I got it .
So, I contacted Apple Care and was directed to approach their Service Center which I did.
The service center fellows told me this was a "non-issue" and "normal". I contacted Apple Care who got in touch with the particular service center and gave me the same response.
I offcourse donot believe this to be a non issue and therefore I've uploaded a video in which you can hear the particular sound.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_hmJ8BY_No
So, what I'd like to know is that, is this 'noise' normal?

Yes! Exactly the same noise as I recently have! I hate this noise. I feel mad on hearing this noise in a silent room. I don't think it's normal, because I don't remember I have heared this noise months before.
I'm now using an apple bluetooth keyboard, on this keyboard the space bar makes a different noise, larger, but not so ----- sticky. And I find the thinner keyboard has the larger noise. My old PC keyboard has no noise at all.
I can endure this noise, if it is not so sticky.
And my Mac is the Macbook late 2013.

  • Keyboard letters mixed up, enter key not working - early '11 MacBook Pro

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro. The keyboard randomly stopped functioning correctly, some keys didn't work at all and others would type in different symbols that I've never seen before. I reset the language it seems to have fixed most of the problems (5 keys weren't working but now they all are). The Enter key inserts a hyphen instead of its normal function and certain keys will still type in random letters. If I press shift and the ENTER key it now puts an underscore instead of a hyphen. The question mark slash button also puts a hyphen or an underscore, as does the original hyphen button. The  plus sign and equal sign button now puts a square bracket, etc. You get the idea. I have already reset the PRAM, but the problem still persists. Approximately how much would somethin© like this cost to ©ix (© replaced the f and ©©©© keys now). f and ©©© keys now.

Try using a usb or wireless keyboard to verify that your built-in keyboard needs repair/replacement.
I don't see how anyone here could give you a price for that, these are user/user help forums.  Take it to an Apple service facility.

  • I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro and zxcv keys are not working?

I have late 2011 Macbook Pro and the zxcv keys are no longer working. Once I connect USB keyboard I can utilize these keys. Do anyone have solution?

How did you try to use Acitivty Monitor?
Open Activity Monitor, choose "All processes" from the list, and sort processes by CPU usage. More likely than not, there will be task using up good bit of CPU.
You could also try resetting SMC:

  • TS1381 My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).  I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, test all other keys with keyboard view (all others work)  - HELP!!

My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).
I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, & tested all other keys with "keyboard viewer" (all other keys work except for the arrow).
In addition, I have gone thru all the recommended checks with universal access and have booted from snow leopard dvd and the left arrow still does not work.
I have tried using the left arrow key in all of applications I use such as: excel, ms word, address book, calendar, iphoto, terminal, & highlighting an icon and using the arrows to move to another selected icon.
Here is the kicker!  In addition, I purchased a logitech solar bluetooth keyboard and the arrows work fine with my ipad but do not work when paired with the macbook pro. All other keys work fine on the macbook pro using the bluetooth keyboard.
I believe this says that the problem is not in my macbook pro keyboard. So where can it be?
Can anyone think of any other rabbit holes I can search?
    thanks and regards
    vats3

I would also like to add that I've reverted the two cd drive and hard drive mods I did and the laptop is back to factory hardware and there is 0 corrosion or mold visible.

  • Macbook Pro Keyboard and Trackpad Not Working

few days ago, my Macbook Pro keyboard and trackpad started to act very oddly.
Basically, the keyboard doesn't work at all. I press down the keys, and all I get is that error message sound. The volume and display brightness keys seem to work, but almost all of the others just won't type anything. it-s like any key command or alt would stay pressed so when i click any key its trying to perform other function instead of just typing the letter. that-s probably the reason why the trackpad is also being very odd. When I first turn on the laptop, it seems to work as normal. I can click on an application, and it opens. But about one minute after the laptop first starts, it's like anywhere I click on the trackpad is a right-click. To open an application, I click like I normally would but instead of opening, a menu pops up as if I right-clicked. This happens in Finder and everywhere else that I've tested (for instance, I can't drag any Finder windows to different positions on the screen, because it acts as if I right-clicked instead of left-clicked), no matter whether I tap or click the trackpad.
I have reset my permissions, but that didn't fix anything. I verified the hard drive and it said there were no problems. A big issue is that I can't do anything that requires me to type in my password, since I can't type anything. I tried to reset the PRAM, but I don't think that it even registered me pressing the Command-Option-P-R keys when I booted up, so i just removed the battery for a while, i am not sure that did anything at all.
i tried to reinstall the os, i had mavericks and i installed a fresh mountain lion but the problem persists. i recently installed virtualbox and the keyboard seems to work right as long as i do not press any of the following keys command, alt, shift, etc.. if i press any of them same thing happens. i found that if i connect a usb keyboard everything works, but when i use the inbuilt keyboard the problem is back and a i have to connect disconnect the usb keyboard to be able to type or use the trackpad normally.
    any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) backlight keyboard not functioning properly?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and for some reason, the automatic backlight keyboard will not funtion as it should. When I have the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option enabled in settings, and I turn on the lights, my backlight keyboard stays at full brightness. Then, when I turn off the keyboard, then the lights, the keyboard does not turn on! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that this was a feature in the MBP lines.

Try a SMC reset.   Shut down the computer. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. Press the power button to turn on the computer.   Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Only part of my macbook pro keyboard backlight works

only part of my macbook pro keyboard backlight works , all settings and f6/7 keys work ok but only a triangle in the centre lights up, so the rest of the keyboard is dark.
    Pleqase someone shed some light.
    Bought in May 2012

It is likely a hardware defect.  If you bought it in May of 2012, it is still under warranty.  Take it back to the store or mail it in to be fixed.

  • My MacBook Pro keyboard doesn't work to log in, but lets me type if I'm logged in as a guest. What do I do?

My MacBook Pro keyboard doesn't work to log in, but lets me type if I'm logged in as a guest. What do I do?

    OK, some more info.
I have re-installed os/x and applied all of the updates.
I have tried to migrate my existing accounts and the problem consistently manifests as below:
    1. In a new user account, I can log in and use the keyboard then logout
    2. If I log in to the migrated user account, the non-numeric keys on the keyboard do not work. If I then log out, and try to log in to another account on the same machine, the non-numeric keys continue not to work.
This would seem to suggest that as the profiles being migrated are on a machine with the same version of up to date OS/X, the issue lies with either the Macbook Pro (other people have also had keyboard problems) or with the migration assistant not working properly given that the current profiles work fine on another mac.
    Any more ideas anyone?

  • The dash key has stopped working on my macbook pro

help!!the dash key has stopped working on my macbook pro mid 2010 and its amazing how much i need to use it has anyone else had this problem with keys and would they be able to fix it at the genius bar at my apple store

Well if you took it completely apart and couldn't get it to work by operating the silicone "cone" then the trace or contactor must be corroded or discontinuous. The only repair is to replace the keyboard. Sorry.

  • Which keyboard should I buy to use keys as replacement for macbook pro?

I have an early 2011 macbook pro and some keys are sticking and broken. I tried buying the newest aluminum wireless keyboard from apple in an attempt to replace the scissor mechanisms, but they are different types and sizes. Does anyone know which keyboard has the revision A type mechanism I could use to replace them?
Note: individually replacing 22 keys would cost close to 200$ and replacing with another keyboard would be better.

It's probably not under warranty anymore to be honest. I found the previous model of the keyboard I had tried.
(A1314) MC184LL/A might have the right type but I can't find any information on them

  • Problem with macbook pro keyboard - MID 2011

Hi all, I have problems with my macbook pro keyboard.
I have several keyboard letter that bother me, the letters are e,y,d,h,c & n
When I hit letter 'e', it will come out as 'ey'..
When I hit letter 'y', it will come out as 'ey'..
When I hit letter 'd', it will come out as 'dh'..
When I hit letter 'h', it will come out as 'dh'..
When I hit letter 'c', it will come out as 'cn'..
When I hit letter 'n', it will come out as 'cn'..
    please help me out..?

If it turns out to be a hardware problem with the keyboard and the repair is done through Apple, be prepared for a sticker-shock price to fix it. The problem is that Apple considers the keyboard as an integral part of the top-half of the aluminun enclosure (it's called the top case & is CNC milled and quite complex)...to Apple, it is considered one-piece and one part number (top case). The keyboard is held onto the top case with many (~60) very tiny screws and this entire top case is the part that will be replaced. They will NOT replace only the keyboard.
I had the power button quit on my Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13". To fix it through Apple would've cost well over $500. The power button is part of the keyboard assembly (it's not removable from the keyboard and uses the same flex cable assembly) so the keyboard itself needs to be changed. I found the exact replacement keyboard on eBay for ~$30 and changed it myself. There is absolutely nothing trivial about replacing it. It was a huge pain in the butt, especially swapping the keyboard on the top case with all of those teenie-tiny screws. It took me the better part of a day to do it but I've had experience with this type of work for at least 20 years now. If I need to do it again for some reason, it will likely be quicker.
Just beware that a repair could cost some big bucks, even if it's only "just the keyboard".

    1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth on the device.
    2. Hold Power button of your keyboard until the light stops blinking.
    3. On the Mac, go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Set Up Bluetooth Keyboard.
    4. Turn on the keyboard. If it doesn't connect to the Mac, press any key of the wireless keyboard.
