No launch of iPhoto 11

Hi, after installing Mac OS X (10.6.3) I also installed Life 11. Since I can't launch iPhoto.
Anybody has an idea why? Thanks

I tried opening with a new library and again I am get the iPhoto (not responding) error message. I got as far as the menu you described. The only thing I can do to sort this problem normally is a restart but that is hardly satisfactory.
The other main problems I encounter are iPhoto crashing when I am using the Share function to e-mail photo's.
The other problem I have is that iPhoto never picks up my camera automatically despite it appearing correctly in Finder. I have to manually import a coupl eof photo's and then it seems to pick up the camera.
Does that point you in any direction ?

  • Preferences not launching in iPhoto 08

I've installed iLife 08 twice and also applied the update for it. The preferences window will not launch in iPhoto. All the other options seem to be work. Any one else have this problem? Thanks in advance.

I too have experienced the same loss of the preference dialog etc. Not pleased.
Have tried everything in past 48 hrs to rectify: OnyX-ed (see below), repaired the disk, tried prebinding, rebuilt the LaunchServices, installed a iPhoto.pkg after extracting it with Pacifist, then again applied the iPhoto 7.01 update after, it goes on ....
    1. I have looked inside the .nib files and all seems to be properly formed with pre-linked code that provides the preferences functionality, blah etc.
    2. Inspecting a working iPhoto 08 com.apple.iPhoto.plist on an Intel Mac Mini installation (iPhoto 08 runs fine on this, and with preferences!) I have compared it to the rogue com.apple.iPhoto.plist on the G5 iMac. Using a Pref Setter (Free), better still the ADC Property List Editor, I have managed to manually change and save the iPhoto .plist settings. I have now been able to turn on event sharing (between G5 iMac and my Mac Mini), add the necessary database containers strings to get the whole shebang working - to a fashion as some of the .plist is rewritten when changing to another iPhoto Library (Run iPhoto with alt key pressed), resulting in another hack. I can now exchange photo's between the two and publish to .mac
    3. I feel the cross-platform functionality of the iPhoto is not the problem. I think the absence of preference dialog is due to the corruption of installation script(s) - perhaps at a time when the volume directory had errors detected. (Suggest using the Utility Disk Doctor before installing iLife to ensure all is ok). This coupled with iLife being installed as an upgrade.
    For what it's worth ....
I suspect there is a malformed path existing somewhere within a .plist string which no longer points to the coding sitting behind the dialog. When the preference menu-step/key event is evoked (Apple +,) nothing happens, other than a short delay and return to the parent process.
Bottom line: there is a .plist hack (which I've started to use) but it's quite complicated for the novice. Guess we're gonna have to wait for Apple to sort this one out. Because of the time factor & sheer frustration, I for one am going back to using iLife 06 on my G5 ... shame

How do I launch my iPhoto photos slideshow?

What version of iPhoto? Is OS X 10.5.4 as you state correct for your OS? what exactly is your problem - what is not working when you try to launch the slideshow?

  • Very recently, my computer stopped opening quicktime when I click on a video clip in iphoto, Its quicktime X, and it works to play videos if I open quicktime and then search for the video. How do I go back to quicktime automatically launching from iphoto?

Very recently, my computer stopped opening quicktime when I click on a video clip in iphoto. I have quicktime X, and it still works to play videos if I open quicktime and then search for the video. How do I go back to quicktime automatically launching from iphoto?

Well since I do not have iPhoto 7 I can only guess what may be: As far I can remember up to iPhoto 8, iPhoto insisted on Quick Time Player 7. As I can see you have Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) and there Quick Time X is the standard playaer. Basically Quick Time 7 is not part of Snow Leopard.
Can you please check if Quick Time 7 is installed under Applications->Utilitis (in 10.6 Quick Time 7 if presenet is installed not under Applications - there Quick Time X is - but under Application/Utilities).
If not: insert your Snow Leopard installation DVD.
Once the installer opens, double-click on the Optional Installs folder
    Double-click the Optional Installs.mpkg package
    Click continue.
Select the option for QuickTime 7 then click Continue to start the installation.
If it is there you may try to move the iPhoto prefernce file to another folder and let iPhoto create a new one.
Please keep the old file until you are sure that iPhoto works how it should.
The iPhoto preference file can be found under your home folder then Library then Preferences and there
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
As alraedy mentioned do not delet this file, since if something goes wrong you can put it back.

  • IMovie '11 slow to load at every launch (large iPhoto library to blame?)

I'm running 10.6.7 on a late 2010 13" macbook pro.  I have a very large iphoto library (over 200GB) that is full of movies made with various digital cameras.  I do have a casio AVI video codec installed into quicktime as a plugin, fyi, but all the movies and clips open fine within iPhoto when I double click them.
The first time I opened up iMovie it said that it needed to scan the iphoto library and then create thumbnails.  This took several hours, but finally completed.  When it finished, I could see all of my movies as events in the iPhoto Videos section of the Event Library within iMovie.
The problem I'm having is that every time I launch iMovie it takes 5 minutes or more to actually open up.  The program launches and then I get the spinning beach ball.  Opening activity monitor and shows iMovie as "unresponsive" and there is massive disk read activity for a long time.  It seems like it's scanning my drive and looking at a LOT of the files. Gigabytes of data is read.  After a while, it finally settles down and I can see all the events.  All of my clips appear to play fine within iMovie. But it makes using the program somewhat an awful experience as everytime I open iMovie I have to wait such a long time.
I tried trashing the preference file for iMovie and it asked me to recreate all the iPhoto library thumbnails.  But I was back to square one aftewards, the same thing... long, long startup time.
Any thoughts or helpful ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

iMovie remembers which you worked with last time you used it. If this is your iPhoto Library it will load all the thumbnails from iPhoto.
To manage your movie clips yourself you can make "events" for them.
    1) Make a new event from the File menu.
    2) Drag in the clips from iPhoto to that event.
    3) Wait until iMovie has made thumbnails for these clips only.
When you quit iMovie it will remember that you worked with this event the last time and it will only load those thumbnails. Much faster. And you can create a new event for the next batch of raw footage.
The downside of this is that you get some videos duplicated so you have them in both iPhoto and iMovie on your disk.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now in Iphoto when I click on a movie, nothing happens. It used to launch the movie.

  • Disable auto launch of iphoto when iphone is connected to mac

Hey everyone, anyone know how to prevent iphoto from launching when I connect my iphone? Thank you.
    Ken

Of course, as anyone who has needed to Restore their iPhone, discovered that their backup was corrupt (happens quite often), and thus lost the pics they snapped with the iPhone, can tell you - you may be better off letting iPhoto launch, importing then deleting the pics from the iPhone, and syncing them back via iTunes so they're not lost for good. Just my 2¢.

  • STOP auto-launch of iPhoto when Mem card connected

How do I stop iPhoto from launching when I plug in my cellphone?
This is really a pain, because every time I try to eject the cellphone (memory card), iPhoto crashes, then re-launches and re-mounts the memory card, again and again and again.
    STOP iPhoto, Stop !

    **** WHOOPS !!! ****
Now when I try to eject the cellphone, it says "<item> in use and cannot be ejected"
You have to quit iPhoto first, then eject it.
THEN, after a while, you get an Error Dialog message on screen which says "Try quitting application and try again" -- BUT IT DOES NOT SAY WHICH APPLICATION TO QUIT (G'dam Apple stupidity)
What other Apps "MIGHT BE" using the cellphone memory card to prevent it's ejection ? (iPhoto is NOT running).
Now, when I eject the volume, it disappears for a while, then the Error "In Use" message appears, and the volume re-mounts.
    Arrrggghhh..

  • How do I turn off auto-launch of iPhoto when the iPhone is connected

I hate it that whenever I connect my iPhone to my MBP iPhoto automatically launches. Any help is appreciated.
    Jacob

To do that follow these steps
    Go into Applications
    Open Image Capture
Next to the blue apple to left hand corner, click on image capture
    Go into Preferences
At the top of the window that opens, change option: When A Camera is connected, Open:
Change the drop down menu to no application
That should prevent iphoto from opening when phone is connected.

  • Plist has to be trashed at every launch of iPhoto

Good morning. I've cross posted this query to the iPhoto discussion.
We are having a problem with iPhoto which started after we upgraded our server O.S. from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9.
Each time our students launch iPhoto their library fails to load until their plist is trashed. At the next launch iPhoto loads the user's photos correctly. At the end of a session they quit iPhoto and, at the next launch, the problem occurs again.
This problem seems restricted to students using iPhoto for the first time. In many cases the images they are using came from Photo Booth, but by no means all of them. Users with iPhoto libraries created prior to the server O.S. upgrade appear to work normally.
Our server is a G4 xServe. Workstations are G4 eMacs and Intel iMacs, running 10.4.9. iPhoto is V. 6.0.6.
We would welcome any suggestions please.

    Brian:
Is the server turned off at night and are the students leaving iPhoto open at night?
You might have them make backup copies of the Library6.iPhoto database file for each of their libraries. Then if the library displays the same behavior on the next launch, replace that file with the backup and launch again. They can make it pretty easy by using the Automator application that I created. They will, however, have to be running Tiger on the machines and modify the application to located and backup the database file on the server that holds the library folder.
You can download it from Toad's Cellar.
    Do you Twango?

  • Auto-launch of iphoto

I'm sure I'm overlooking something stupid, but how do you stop iphoto from automatically launching when the iPhone starts to sync?

I posted this other option on another thread:
I find it doesn't open iPhoto if your phone doesn't contain any photos that you took on the iPhone that are still in the "camera roll". I download the photos to iPhoto into a folder I named "From iPhone" which I have checked off to sync with the iPhone (if I do want them to be on the iPhone) then I delete them from the iPhone from the "camera roll" section of photos or from the camera app. Until I take a new photo from the iPhone, iPhoto doesn't open, the photos are still on the phone and in iPhoto and iPhoto will still open when I've taken new pictures via iPhone or my camera.
You could also set iPhoto to delete photos from camera after downloading but I don't want iPhoto to automatically do that with my photos from my regular camera ... I'm afraid I'll forget to uncheck the box so I use the above method.
A P.S. to this, if you've take pictures to use as contact photos, you can remove the photo itself after you've applied it to the contact and it will still work even if it's not on your iPhone at all.

  • Help for Canceling Auto Launch of iPhoto

I am a photographer who uses the Canon Software exclusively but everytime I insert a media card into the card reader iPhoto launches. It is inconvenient because I have to wait for iPhoto to load and then I close it. Then I open my Canon software. Is there a way to cancel iPhoto from automatically launching everytime I insert a media card?

    Leslie,
Can you change this behavior if you open Image Capture>Preferences>General>When a camera is connected, open: (Make your choice)?
    ;~)

  • Photocast URL forces launch of iPhoto 6

When I published a photocast and sent the "invite" email, Macintosh users with iPhoto 6 installed seem not to have the option to use the URL for the RSS feed in any application except iPhoto.
For example, when you copy the URL from the email and paste it into the nav bar in Safari (which can handle RSS) it does NOT go to the feed in Safari, it instead launches iPhoto 6 and sets up the Photocast in iPhoto. Strange, and NOT what I want it to do. Am I doing something wrong? How is this even possible? A URL is just text!?

    Dave,
Yes, thanks, that works. The "invitation" email generated by iPhoto '06 provides a URL that is incorrect to the extent that it appears to be valid only for other Mac users who want to view the photocast in iPhoto '06.
There is a detailed technical explanation from SandyS1 in another thread, "Photocast.mac.com rejects ALL non-Apple RSS readers", that explains what is happening and has info useful to PC users, Mac users without '06, or anyone who wants to view Photocasts via an RSS feed reader.

  • Slideshow fails to launch in iPhoto and Aperture

I used to run slideshows in iPhoto and Aperture without problems and really liked the scrapbook theme in Aperture (thanks Apple!). Then I made the mistake of re-installing Leopard and now everytime I click "start slideshow", the screen goes black for a few seconds and then goes back to where it was before. Does anyone know what the reason could be. Otherwise both iPhoto and Aperture seem to work just fine.

    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    2. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
