No levels in voiceover tool

I hooked up a Tascam mixer (with a microphone attached) to my Imac using the USB port. When I open the voice-over tool in FCP 3, the mixer is listed in the source dropdown list - but no sound appears to be coming through to the level. In system preferences the mixer also appears, and the levels indicate there is indeed audio coming through.
Imac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sorry I'm new to this so not familiar with the terms.
I tried fiddling with all the sliders and knobs and nothing made a difference.
The mic is connected to the mixer with an XLR plug into "Mic input A". I put the "line out" pot at its maximum, as well as the master slider, nothing. (Here is what the mixer looks like, maybe I'm using the wrong terms)

The mixer is connected to my iMac with a USB cable, there is a USB port on the side of the mixer where the plu goes into.

  • Voiceover tool audio levels low

I am using the voiceover tool with a new USB mic. (a recommended mic. from B&H) When I record the audio, the levels are really low. I can adjust the levels up in the timeline but they are still lower that I would like them to be. How to I change the incoming audio levels. I have the "gain" at 150.
    Thanks.

yes, thanks, it is at the max level and also what the instructions for my mic. recommended. I am recording at -42 and I can only raise it to -24 after it has been recorded. My mic. is Sonic Distribution USB 1000A.

  • Voiceover tool unable to detect mic

Thought I would try voiceover tool for the first time. Have a Sony PDX10 camcorder with mic attached, firewire cable into G5. I selected DV audio as the input in the voiceover drop down window, 48KHz selected, selected in and out points, but no audio shows on the meter or when I hit record. Went to log and capture, selected capture audio only and was able to capture audio so I presume cables are ok. I need to see the video playing as I capture audio so log and capture no good in this respect. What am I doing wrong here, suggestions welcome.

The image shows a database/panic error and no sign of an actual number indicating space available in the database.  Then there's this:
    hnpclecd:ecdadm 62> cat SYBSPACE.LOG
    SCRIPT SYBSPACE
    =================
auto extend feature is not set
    Msg 3606, Level 16, State 0:
    Server 'ECD', Line 41:
    Arithmetic overflow occurred.
    ======================================================
    I'm guessing ...
The SYBSPACE script is suppose to generate some numbers indicating space usage for the database in question.
But the SYBSPACE script runs into an error so it fails to generate the space usage numbers that SUM is looking for.
SUM is proceeding as if the lack of space usage numbers is an indication of no free space in the database, as opposed to aborting the entire process because of the SYBSPACE error.
Fix the code that's generating the error in the SYBSPACE script and you'll probably find that SUM is then able to accurately assess the state of your database.
The code that's generating the error (3606, arithmetic overflow) definitely needs to be fixed by SAP (ie, open a tech support case with SAP) but in the meantime if you've got access to the SYBSPACE script, and you understand T-SQL, you could probably fix the SYBSPACE script so that you can continue with your SUM operation.

  • FCP VoiceOver Tool

This question was almost answered but in the end didn't get answered.
I use the VoiceOver tool for voiceovers in television news packages which I edit with Final Cut Pro.
My microphone preamp goes into the mic jack. I see the peak meter correctly move when I'm recording my voice, but cannot hear my voice as it is being recorded. Page 144 of the FCP manual (Vol. 3) discusses uses headphones to hear oneself while recording. Specifically, it says, "VOLUME: Use this slider to adjust the level of the audio that plays through the headphone port while the Voice Over tool is recording...."
My headphones are connected to the output jack of my MacPro and the settings on the audio/video is on built-in output but I cannot hear myself as I should. I have tried to change the sound settings in System Preferences and there is no change. I can hear the resulting audio file that has been recorded, and can hear the audio portion of my FCP project through the headphones. I can also hear the cue beeps prior to the segment being recorded. But I cannot hear myself while recording the voiceover.
I know that can purchase a pre-amp which has a headphone jack, but think I should at least have the option of having it work on my system before resorting to this workaround, which, logically, should not need a workaround if it is stated as a functioning feature of FCP.

    Hey Ivars
As per your recent thread on the COW FCP forum, I fear there is no answer to this issue that will be to your satisfaction. This is simply not how the Voice Over Tool currently works in FCP, it doesn't provide incoming voice to the headphones output mix, rather the volume slider controls only the level of the timeline audio. The reason for the volume control being there at all is to allow control of headphones volume with specific regard to their use with the VO Tool. This means you don't have to change your audio output volume at a more global application or OS level.
For what its worth, albeit sanctioned by Apple, these forums are just user to user, there is no official Apple presence other than the hosts that police the forum to ensure that the Terms of Use are adhered to. I'd strongly suggest you add your voice to those others who have also asked for this feature\ to be implemented within the VO Tool. (For anyone not following and who would also like to ask for the feature: there should be a facility to hear the recorded audio together with timeline audio during Voice Over Tool operation and there should be a facility to control the mix of that audio).
The Apple feedback page for FCP is found at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html
Feedback is seen and read there by those that need to see and read them .. no guarantee that it'll be implemented but if you make your case clearly and politely then at least you know it'll be considered.
In the meantime, the same advice offered before holds true. A small outboard mixer or an alternative mic preamp that already directly supports the needed feature is the order of the day, the latter being my own preference.

  • Final Cut, MOTU Ultralite and voiceover tool

I've got an Ultralite firewire unit that works perfectly fine with Ableton and the system in general. I've got my System audio set to the Ultralite and it works fine. (I get great microphone levels in the system audio preferences.) However, its dead in FCP. I've got the source and inputs in the voiceover tool set properly -- it even works when I try the built in mic on the laptop, but goes dead when I switch to the MOTU. Last detail... audio playback thru the MOTU is fine; its just recording is dead.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Alright I'm not 100% sure about this, but I believe that FCP uses what is set in Audio MIDI Setup.
To check go to Applications > Utilities > Audio Midi Setup
There you will see the Default Input settings. Make sure that the Ultralite is set there, and also Audio Input in the bottom left
    Then open FCP and check

  • FCPX voiceover tool not working

A similar question was asked earlier this year, and appears to have been answered. Unfortunately I can not follow what steps I need to take.
When I open the voiceover tool in FCPX the dialog box shows no "Destination" and the drop-down does not respond. Attempting to record a voiceover appears to produce nothing.
In my last FCPX project this worked perfectly (completed in April). I have not knowingly changed any settings.
Anybody any idea what has gone wrong and what I can do about it?
    Thanks.

Deleting preferences is completely harmless. It does not delete the application or any of your content.
Most often when FCP X exhibits some strange behavior, corrupt preferences are responsible.
The free program Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion allows you to backup your preferences if you like (so in case this turns out not to be the cause, you can restore those preferences again with the same program).
But really all you may have to do is go to the preferences window in FCP X and set a few things back the way you like them. There aren't all that many preferences to set, anyway.
Just download it, check the box for FCP X and click "Trash". Don't worry, it is perfectly safe.

  • Voiceover tool doesnt rcognize text on java applet

Voiceover tool doesnt recognize the texts on the java applet.

absolutely now way of doing this straight forwardly. But some workouts could be :
    1. whatever text u want to display, try displaying it inside a textarea (and not simply as label). This will automatically adjust the textarea as well as the text inside it on resizing.
    2. develop a custom class (say DynamicLabel) which will keep track of the resizing event of the applet or frame and adjust the text in multiple lines accordingly. But then u have to write custom code to adjust the text in multiple lines.

  • Saving audio recorded with Voiceover tool

    Hi all,
When I record narration directly into the Timeline using the Voiceover tool, then save the project, close and open FCE again, it shows up as a disconnected file. I tried Reconnect Media, but of course there is no file to connect to, as it doesn't exist outside of the Timeline.
I've tried dragging the file into the Browser from the Timeline, but same thing happens on reopening - disconnected file.
I suppose I can go back to recording in Sound Studio and importing, but I like the idea of doing it all in FCE.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Yep, did that. I hadn't tried searching for it though, in the mistaken belief that it had just vanished 'cos of something I was doing wrong. Now I know where to look for it.
    Thank you,
    Andrew

  • FCE Unexpected quit upon selecting audio interface in voiceover tool

FCE runs fine. I've just installed a Tascam US-122mkII USB audio interface which is also running fine in all other programs. It outputs sounds perfectly and inputs fine from the attached external microphone.
When I go to the Voiceover tool in FCE, the US-122mkII is displayed in the dropdown list, but five seconds after I choose it, FCE quits.
I'm running the latest version of the Tascam driver and teh internets seem to agree that this driver is pretty solid. I've reinstalled the driver just in case, updated firmware, deleted preferences...and now I'm out of ideas.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Did you search aboout this issue in tascam.com web support?
There is a mac OS X 10.6 driver update:

  • Voiceover tool problems

I have been using the voiceover tool a lot to dub dialogue and I'm finding it simply stops working 60% of the time.
I am using a Lexicon Omega USB audio input that is recognised in the audio input drop-down, and works every time in STP, but when I use it in FCP it stops registering sound, sometimes halfway through recording.
The only remedy I've found is to switch to 'built-in audio' in the audio input drop-down, then back to the Omega. Even this only works 50% of the time.
Am I th eonly one having this sort of problem with voiceover?
G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Lexicon Omega USB audio input w/ Shure XLR microphone

You might want to check out an application called ScreenFlow.
    http://varasoftware.com/products/screenflow/
The narration, recording and export features (including chapters) may be well worth the $99 and save you time AND headaches.

  • Can't adjust video levels in capture tool

I'm using a Blackmagic Multibridge Pro as my I/O but when I try to digitize, the video input levels are hot. i want to adjust them in the capture tool but it's grayed out. I'm capturing from a Beta SP deck with a component signal. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

page 243 in the FCP6 manual states that "video levels can only be adjusted for analog video interfaces" it says nothing else. i'd rather adjust the levels from the source anyway whatever medium I am working in anyway. you might else well stick with that.

  • Version Numbers Vs. Patch Levels For Web Tools

I have noticed that version numbers for Web Tools such as 620, 621, 622, 624, 625, 627, and 628 correspond somehow to the patch level (6, 8, 10, etc.). What is the difference between the version numbers and patch levels, and which ones match up with which?

    Hi Michael,
Prior to p10, the last digit of the version corresponds to the patch level.
From p10 going forward, the last set of digits represents the patch.
    Patch 10 is 2007.0.630.10
    Patch 11 will be 2007.0.631.11
The version will only change if there are upgrade scripts that need to run for the patch.

  • Why can't I alter the Gain control in the voiceover tool?

Whether I use my USB mic or normal mic plugged into Line In, I cannot increase the value of the Gain control slider.
    Any ideas?

    The problem is solved!
After reading how someone else lost this functionality after upgrading to ML, I booted into Snow Leopard (10.6.8) which I have installed on a Firewire hard drive, launched FCP X 10.0.7 and surprise, surprise  .  .  .  .
.  .  .  .  the Input Device Gain slider was working perfectly.
If anyone else using Mountain Lion 10.8.2 could check this out and let me know their results, I would be most obliged.
P.S. Some eagle-eyed reader may notice that my original screenshot showed the Record Audio tool set to "Built-in Input" and this screenshot shows the "Built-in Microphone" selected.
You can forget about that as I tested every setting several times in both ML and SL and the results were the same. It is just unfortunate that the screenshots show different settings.

  • MXL Mic Mate using analog condenser mic recording in FCP6 Voiceover tool...

Hmm. I cannot select any sample rate higher than 1600khz... what is the deal? I am running 10.4.11 and the 6.0.4 version of FCP... anyone seen this bug before? I CAN record in Soundtrack @ 48k and also using other USB Mic's... Other mic's plugged into the Mic Mate also do not register in FCP as being able to go over 16k though. So this leads me to believe that FCP isn't letting me record at a higher sample rate since the same setup with Soundtrack is successful.
    -Micah

Well, it seemed to be a USB power issue. The "mic mate" supplies phantom power to any mic over USB so that you can record without a preamp or using the deck/camera trick. Turns any analog mic into a USB mic, I know, not the professional best choice but I gotta work with what they give me. Basically once I left everything off the USB ports, including the cinema display hub, it worked like a charm to change the sample rates. Possibly the cable run 10 meters or so? Not sure, once I got FCP to accept 48k it stuck, even after I plugged back in the USB essentials, I cannot change it again... But hey it is what I needed anyways... Is there anyway in Mac world to increase the USB power? And yes, I know about line and mic inputs... But also, thank you for responding, I know there is a massive flood of un-knowledgeable people on here... I wish I had time to help others as well. Possibly in the future.
