No library on startup

When I start iTunes, there is no music or anything else showing up. I have pointed it to my iTunes music folder (the music files are there). I can use the "File" menu command to add the folder to the library and then after processing for a moment, everything is there. When I close and start iTunes later, it is blank again. I have tried exporting the library to a named "Library.xml" file and that file then shows up in the iTunes music folder. Then, when I restart, same thing happens and then when I look, the "Libary.xml" file is gone. There never has be a "library.itl" file to open from when I start iTunes while holding down the shift key.
What gives? This is making me crazy. I just want one library to sync with my iPhone, not worried about supporting 2 computers or any of that jazz.
Thanks.

In fact I have:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10167019#10167019 and again find myself getting alternative solutions to Apple's service. Sure miss the days when they were hungry. And I hate to say that. I think we all should eat well! My solution - Jaikoz - about $25+ (conversion from Euro I think), killer app, overrides iTunes and is much easier to edit and sort. You have a great day Chris.

  • Library and Startup items folder

    Hello. I recently installed a driver for an EMI 2/6 (an old Emagic device) into my iBook which put itself in the startup items folder in the Library. It worked once but now it doesnt (Logic cant find the driver.) I was advised to try repairing permissions in the Startup Items folder. I now can only find the Library in the users folder; I cant find the other one and cant find the startup items folder either. Spotlight can find the startup items folder but I cant trace where its gone. Meanwhile I cant work and am missing OS9 badly. Have I messed with something I shouldnt have?

    If iTunes is in the Dock, just control-click on the icon and, if the "Open at Login" is checked, uncheck it. If iTunes is not in your Dock, go to the Accounts system preference, select your account and go to the Login Items tab. If iTunes is listed there, remove it.
    Regards.

    If your Mac is stuck in that screen, press Alt, Command and Esc keys, and force quit the app you are using to install that update (probably, App Store). Then, restart your Mac and try to install the update again, but now without opening Safari before

  • New iPhoto not working at all - blank library on startup

    I just upgraded my iLife package to 09 and must admit that I've never experienced this much trouble in my 15 years as an apple.
    First of all: Upon upgrading and first launch of iPhoto I was met by a complete blank library. I quickly checked all my preferences and while clicking around my Events and Librarys appeared in iPhoto though I'm unable to open any Events and generally nothing's working.
    I've tried trashing my preferences and reinstalling. I've made sure that everything is up to date. Still I met by the same blank screen. Furthermore it seems I cannot quit iPhoto and I have to force-quit the application.
    While looking for a solution I tried "iPhoto Library Manager" - but no luck there either. It was unable yo rebuild the library, what seems to be the obvious solution. As far as I know, there no way to rebuild the new iPhoto 8 (09) Library...???
    Anyone have a solution to my troubles.
    Thx

    Hmm it seems I cannot go back to iPhoto 08 without making a complete restore. I'm not ready to try that and risk trouble in other applications (Adobe packages etz). By the way I upgraded both iLife and iWorks at the same time.
    The rebuild didn't help att all it seems. The problem is the same. Blank iPhoto until I click around in the preferences, then all librarys and events suddenly appear. But they're all completely useless. Still no access to individual pictures inside Events. I can open Events in a new window and look through the photos but that's it...
    I did this upgrade on my MacPro. Luckily my "real" photos are on my MacBookPro, but I don't think I will try upgrading before i find a solution...
    Any ideas are most welcome.

  • HT1347 Windows: Is there a script for adding a folder to an iTunes Library at startup?

    Has anyone ever created a script to have "watched folders" functionality in iTunes?
    Three out of the four users in my household share the same iTunes library folder, which resides on a separate hard drive (along with the iTunes Library of the 4th user). I thought this would be the easiest way for all the music purchased for our family to be shared among us, while not sharing playlists. I thought iTunes would, automatically and routinely, scan and categorize the files in the designated iTunes Media Folder.
    However, now whenever someone adds music through their account, the songs will not show up in another user's library (even though both accounts use the same iTunes Media Folder). The only way to have an up-to-date library, is to go to "File" > "Add Folder to Library..." and add the iTunes Media folder each time a user starts their iTunes instance.
    I'm new to iTunes (moving over from WMP and VLC).
    Just in case anyone cares... I'm using:
    - iTunes 10.7.0.21
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (with Service Pack 1)
    - We have an iPhone and an iPod touch in the household

  • Can I change the default library upon startup?

    When iTunes launches, it always selects the "Music" library, the top setting in the upper-left. I use a "shared" music server exclusively. It would be good to have that as the default, either by reordering the list or specifying this entry as a default. iTunes doesn't seem to provide this option. Is there a way to do this?

    Interesting. Didn't know you could do that. But I don't think this lets me select what iTunes calls 'shared' libraries, that is, remove libraries shared over DAAP protocol from another iTunes server or open source clone, such as mt-daapd. (Or can it?) These servers don't have library files, AFAIK, and are found using rendezvous/bonjour or some sort of discovery service.
    If iTunes doesn't support selecting one of these as a default, it should, or it's only half-supporting this wonderful feature.

  • Open Library on Startup

    When I launch iTunes on my Windows Vista PC, it opens with the Store tab.  It takes a long time to load.  Can I configure iTunes to open in the library view??

    iTunes normally opens with the same view that was active when it was closed. If it doesn't then perhaps it is having problem updating the preferences file C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunePrefs.xml. You could delete this and force iTunes to regenerate it. You may need to reset your preferences for organizing media, preferred import format, or reconnect to your library if it is stored in an alternate location.

  • Always choose iTunes library at startup

    We have 4 itunes libraries on one Windows PC.  Is there a way to setup iTunes so that it always asks the user to choose a library (without pressing shift)?  Otherwsie, it is too easy for one user to open iTunes and not realize that he/she is using another persons library.  We have Windows setup to auto logon, so we're all using the same Windows profile.

  • ITunes ALWAYS Checking Library on Startup

    Hi All,
    Every time I start iTunes it checks the library, which can take 5-10 minutes.
    This only started happening in the last few months, and used to be because iTunes had crashed on exit, but iTunes appears to cleanly exit.
    Could there be something that is triggering this?
    There are around 100 iT.tmp files in the iTunes folder.
    Any advice to stop this appreciated.

  • Loading JNI library on Tomcat startup

    I am trying to load a JNI library on startup of servlet. I have written the following code in my servlet init function:
    public void init(ServletConfig config) throws ServletException {
    super.init(config);
    log.info("Loading native libraries...");
    System.loadLibrary("foo");
    log.info("Native libraries loaded...");
    On Tomcat startup, I see the "Loading native libraries..." message, but I don't see the "Native libraries loaded...". As if the system hung in the System.loadLibrary function.
    Anybody knows how to solve this problem?
    Martin

    The specification specifically forbids the use of native libraries in container objects. So you might want to take that into consideration with whatever you are doing.
    If you do want to do that then I would suggest loading it outside of the container. There is probably some configuration option that allows you to force tomcat to load something on start up.
    You might also want to consider if hot deploys are part of your future. If they are then you might want to put the interface inside of your own custom class loader, so you can probably control the unload of the shared library.
    If you search the J2EE lists you will find that almost everyone states that JNI should not even be loaded into the server. Instead you should create a seperate application and use RMI to access it. Myself I think that is overkill, but I would probably consider exactly what I am interfacing to before making that final decision. If your JNI library blows up it will take down the entire server (which is why the spec forbids it.)

  • Can I have an iTunes Library on an external HD, and have it appear under 'Shared' so I can use two library's at once?

    Hey guys, here's a weird one - I have a large library on my macbook for my DJ music. Now I want to convert all my old albums to AIFF for listening purposes, and not DJing, so I don't want to cram them all into the lappy HD.
    I have a NAS, which shows up as a 'Shared' Library. Can I create a library on an external Thunderbolt portable HD and have it do the same? Or will that only work on Network HD's.
    I know the trick to hold Option and select your library at startup for multiple librarys, however I want to use them both at once.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers!

    Thanks for the reply.
    Basically, I want to plug in an external HD, and have it appear under 'Shared' Libraries, just like what happens when I'm connected to my NAS Server. If this is possible, of course.

  • Aperture Library/Database hacks

    After one week playing around with aperture, i want to share my current insights with 'customizing' (my) aperture's way of dealing with my picture files.
    Warning:
    The following thoughts and arrangements are working for me, they're
    undoubtly NOT supported by apple and the programmers of the aperture
    application!
    Reading a lot of articles in the forum when aperture hit the masses, i've been disappointed about how aperture will fit with me.
    Over the years my growing picture collection moved over from one computer to the other, deploying more storage, and will continue to do so in the future. So the technical equipment has to be independent from the treasure's of my data, to follow state of the art hard- and software development.
    For me, aperture approved to be of such a kind.
    Despite aperture stores away all my digital masters into it's own Library, thus duplicating data during imports, it just brings in some kind of more detailed
    directory hierarchies to my way of organizing my picture library. How does it do?
    How do i store my Library?
    Sorry to be that longish, but to explain my concepts i have to.
    Modern operating systems distinguish private/personal and public/common data for their file storage locations. Hopefully they follow the 'FHS' (Filesystem-Hierarchical-Standard) brought up by linux, to name the diverse locations for classified data.
    I do run mixed os'es within my networks, as no computer should be isolated from a networked environment anymore. But to be honest it's more a single-user situation in reality, then the multi-user aspects i always keep in mind when designing my infrastructure environment for a network.
    My picture library/online-archive is classified 'common' data, so it stores outside my home-directory, and every user allowed to, has access to it. I do not support locales within my filenaming-conventions, users and me are german-spoken, so the 'common' data for my systems is always called
    '/Bibliothek'.
    Furthermore we're dealing with pictures (Bild), movies (Film), music (Musik) and documents (Dokumente) in all common used operting systems (os x, windows), storing private data to the home-directory within appropiate directories and public/common data to the equivalent directories at a common storage.
    /Bibliothek
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv
    /Bibliothek/Filmarchiv
    /Bibliothek/Musikarchiv
    BTW, i customized windows to reflect this filetree within explorer windows, so users click to 'Eigene Bilder' (my pictures) and 'Bildarchiv' (common pictures) there, to change between directories, making it very convenient to work with.
    Especially the 'common' picture files are strongly organized by date, which is reflected at the directory-structure, for example:
    '/Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2004/2004-04-17, make a good description/'
    '/Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2005/2005-12-00, a bunch for the whole period/'
    A descriptive directory name is highly portable between operating systems, applications and last but not least, users!
    For now, aperture seems to be pretty much a single-user solution.
    But it's library can be 'distributed' to accomodate my needs.
    I started to import my data by drag'n'drop, which works best for me. I didn't like the import assistent, which seemed to result in a different structure of my data in aperture's 'all projects' list. By creating a folder in aperture for the year, then drag'n'drop the multi-selected directories from the finder, i got within aperture:
    All Projects + * (<-Aperture)
    <div class="jive-quote">Library (smart-albums, collapsed)
    2005 (folder)
    2005-11-00 (folder, nested)
    2005-11-17, sample bla (project, from directory)
    Images from 2005-11-17, sample bla (album, inherited)
    2005-12-08, take a better name (project)
    Images from 2005-12-08, take a better name
    Using aperture's preferences to switch between libraries i did import to different aperture libraries for the years, resulting in a bunch of directories, each holding an 'Aperture Library.aplibrary' paket there.
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2004/2004.aplibrary
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2005/2005.aplibrary
    Yes, the pakets can be renamed, to better reflect whats in there. Aperture has to be restarted to change from one library to another!
    The total amount of imported data, yet: 130 GB, ~33164 pics.
    I am working with a 15" powerbook, 1,5gb ram, 80 gb hdd on the road and a 200gb external drive at home/office.
    to make me feel comfortable with aperture, i switched to (terminal hacking!):
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/2004/ ->
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2004/2004.aplibrary
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/2005/ ->
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2005/2005.aplibrary
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Texturen/ ->
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/Texturen/Texturen.aplibrary
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/...
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2004/2004.aplibrary
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/2005/2005.aplibrary
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/Texturen/Texturen.aplibrary ->
    /Volumes/HD39.1/Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/Texturen/Texturen Library.aplibrary
    Linking folders to where i believe they are right placed in my systems.
    Now aperture's settings don't have to be changed each time to switch between libraries. Not connecting the external hdd gives me grayedout
    folders within aperture, for data stored on the external drive. Having a folder located on my inetrnal hdd and 'linked' to aperture:
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/local ->
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/working.local.aplibrary
    i can work with aperture normally, even if the external drive is not available.
    the grayedout folders/subfolders/projects are browsable, but all thumbnails are just gray rectangles with its 'version name' underneath. same with smart-albums. available pics have colored thumbnails, unavailable pics are gray, naturally.
    And aperture's database? well, i am very happy with it, really. Compared to my pre-aperture structure all the above mentioned tweaking gave me:
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Aperture.aplib/Library.apdb
    This file is actually the sqlite3 database file. it's size is 111 MB now.
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Local ->
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/Working.local.aplibrary
    I can store pictures there into folders and projects when i am on the road, filling up my local harddisk. Inspecting the paket shows up how aperture differenciated my pre-aperture filestructure:
    /Bibliothek/Bildarchiv/Working.local.aplibrary/2005-12-08, take a better name.approject/2005-12-08 @ 01/49/06 PM - 1.apimportgroup/DSC0168/dsc0168.nef
    All nicely packed into a single unit from the finder, easily browsable from aperture, and searchable by sql queries. Every Master enclosed in its own folder box, hm. Every import of files seperated to one folder, which makes clearly apparent that we will import redundant(duplicate) files for ever.
    Adding two/three levels to my previous filestructure, strange namings all inclusive. As i sort my files with aperture into projects, the files accordingly move around at the filesystem-level. I'll let them go. They are there if i need access to them in case of failure.
    T H E G L I T C H E S
    within my setup the most current sql database is stored at:
    ~me/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Aperture.aplib/Library.apdb
    importing the way i did results in a sqlite3-database file for each library i switched to before linking them together. Right after linking one of those aplibrary pakets as a new folder, aperture will rebuild the current database at startup, which can indepently be invoked with 'option command aperture' anytime the program is started.
    Changes to the metadata of a picture are written to the current database aperture is running on, but can be transfered to any other database file
    when rebuilding the library at startup (which can be a time-consuming thing!)
    Even if the external hd is reconnected before startup, some thumbnails are not properly generated all the time. At the current state i don't have any glue what's the cause for this. All Versions are properly accessable anyway.
    Once again,
    DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK,
    if you try some of the suggestions i've made. Better you know how to handle a terminal before you even think about what i told here. Don't bother me, if something does not work for you - it works for me.
    I can do this because it's my data, i am the only one affected by failure and i still do have my data on my windows system as a backup, for now.
    Do the same before you trash your treasures.
    Why i did made this post? Aperture really lacks support for team-working now. I cannot see how aperture can be really employed to its potential for an environment with more than a single user?. The sqlite3 database is said to handle concurrent users, i read on its homepage. So i still hope, there will be a group-worked aperture someday.

    my reports, just for the logs.
    drwxr-xr-x 2 fo03c fo03c 68 Dec 19 20:15 ArchiveInfo
    -rw-r--r-- 1 fo03c fo03c 362 Dec 19 20:17 DataModelVersion.plist
    -rw-r--r-- 1 fo03c fo03c 173107200 Dec 20 00:26 Library.apdb
    comparing the timestamps, the time needed to recreate 'my' library, is:
    4h 11 min.
    The sql database contains 972 projects with 57952 picture items, as the startup overlay tells me. not that bad, i think. depends on the situation, and how much zen you learned, if you can wait for the 'recreate'.
    but i didn't stop to mature aperture!
    i switched to one of my 'old' libraries (choosing from preferences panel) and set some new
    a) ratings
    b) keywords
    c) deleted a master from that 'old' library.
    after changing back to the 'linked' aperture database file (within my home-directory, as described previously), and restart aperture -
    yes, it crashed! oops.
    yet another try - crash. i realized, i deleted the first pic from the 'current view' aperture tries to load after relaunch. ?! =:-(
    if the database is corrupted again, i would have to reinvest ~4 hours to recreate the database? but how about the preferences?
    apple this is a bug! when i made the preferences file
    ~me/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
    UNAVAILABLE (delete or rename as you like), aperture starts with the import assistent, as at its first time.
    Since then i can start aperture and navigate to the project i deleted the file from (very unpolitly). The corresponding thumbnail shows up with a new 'icon' to lower right corner of the thumbnail. It clearly means: this file is UNAVAILABLE.
    YES =:-) i deleted it!
    the rating and keywording on the 'old' database is gone -
    thus making the precedence of the database against the sidecars obvious, doensn't it?
    selecting the 'orphaned' thumbnail, now leaves aperture with the message 'loading', but it does not crash. Changes in ratings or keywording to the current library (the 'recreated' new one) on different files are persitent across restarts of aperture. btw, aperture restarts with the focus on the orphaned first thumbnail, now marked with the icon 'i am NOT available', but it does not crash anymore, when starting.
    my conclusion:
    someone in the forums pointed towards the difficulties maintaining a database of pictures and the separation of their storage, as users will delete or move files seperated from that database, breaking everything.
    NO, aperture does widely tolerate such doing.
    But why should we do so? =:-)f
    For me: its fun, i will not complain about failure, when i do mature an application like this.

  • Moved Library to external drive and can't get my library!

    Someone please help me! I have moved all my photos to an external drive but do not understand how I can get iPhoto to automatically recognize this and grab my photos into the library on startup. I did the same thing in iTunes and had no issues!
    I'm sure its an easy fix....I just have no clue how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Quit iPhoto. Hold down the Option key as you launch iPhoto. A dialog box will ask you to Choose or Create a library. Select Choose, then navigate to the iPhoto Library folder on your external drive. It should open in exactly the same condition as before you moved it.
    Regards.

  • IPhoto '08: library-sharing woes, library size = zero

    Greetings everyone,
    Just got a new Aluminum iMac, running 10.5 and iPhoto 08, and I am trying to share a 5GB iPhoto library among several users.
    I have placed the library in a shared folder that all users have access to. I launched iPhoto and accessed the library as "User 1", and it worked fine: all photos were displayed, all events/rating/etc. were intact.
    However, all other users are unable to access this library. I quit iPhoto, logged in as "User 2", and launched iPhoto with option key down to select a library on startup. iPhoto can see the directory, but the library is grayed out. Also, if I Get Info on this library while logged in as "User 2", it says *the file size is Zero K* (Get Info says file size = 5GB when logged in as User 1). Same thing happens for all other users on this box.
    *Anyone have any idea how to get other users to be able to access this library* and/or why this library is showing up as Zero K for all users except the first one?
    Thanks in advance!
    sno-man

    sno-man:
    If you manually reset the ownership and permissions of the library located in the Shared folder any new file or file that gets edited by a second user will have that 2nd Users ownership and preferences. It's a difficult situation.
    The best way to share a working/editing library between multiple users on the same or multiple Macs is to put the library on an external FW hard disk whose ownership is set to be ignored .
    A second way is to create a disk image large enough to hold the library and some room for expansion, put it in the shared folder, put the library in it and have it set in each users login items to be mounted automatically when they log in. The disk image will have ownership turned off and all users can open and edit within the library, but not at the same time.
    Also I recommend you follow the tip at the end of my signature as being on a disk image there could be an interruption while a user was using the library and writing to the library's database file. If that happens that file will be damaged and you'll lose all of your organizational effort, i.e. keywords, books, albums, slideshows. The tip describes how to recover easily from such an event.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Images doubled after repairing the library

    Hi there,
    I had some trouble with my library.
    I went through repair permissions - no probem.
    Then i selected "repair library at startup" - this led to a doubling of my image count!
    However, the "double" images seem to be empty, i only see white dot-lines and the same keywords as the preceding image has. All those images are found in a project "restored projects".
    I have reproduced this error a few times now, i have to idea whats going on.
    I have also opened the aperture library package, deleted the .xml file, and it also had no effects.
    Anybody has an idea?
    of course, its newest aperture 3.03 , mac os x 10.6.4 and so on.
    I have some 20.000 images in my library

    alexander -- I'm sorry to hear about your problems; your frustration that Aperture is not working well for you is understandable.  Complaining about that -- or anything -- on this discussion board won't help.  We are an unaffiliated group of Aperture enthusiast who volunteer our time and expertise to help people like you make the most of Aperture.  We have no connection to Apple, Inc.  Speaking for myself, I find your attitude off-putting.
    Have you tried exporting all the containers in your Library via "Export→Project as New Library"?  You should do this, of course, after (once again) weeding out the problem images.
    Trouble-shooting is a painstaking process of elimination.  Eventually you'll either resolve the issue or determine that it is unresolvable.  You are not there yet.
    {Added}  What are the five settings you are using for Previews (as shown on "Aperture→Preferences→Previews")?  It may be worth addressing the very long processing on closing Aperture issue separately.  When was the last time you force-quit Aperture?
