No lights on ONT

I only subscribe to FiOS internet 50/25.

Internet was working well all morning. After cleaning out the garage, and accidentally powering off the surge protector the PSU is plugged into, I have no internet. The BBU beeped for a second and then the whole system powered off.

I switched the surge protector back on - PSU light is green / BBU has no lights / ONT has no lights.

I unplugged, waited, and plugged back in - PSU light is green / BBU has a dimming green light on system status / ONT has no lights.

Called tech support. They said "no connection due to no power" - DUH! They had me cycle everything again and hold the Alarm Silent button once for 15 seconds once for 30 seconds. Nothing changed. Technician is scheduled for tomorrow morning. I'll post the result and the models of the PSU/BBU/ONT after the service.

Technician came. Said my generation 1 BBU/PSU needed to be replaced. It just finally quit working.
Brand new one installed. Problem fixed.

• No Lights on ONT but cable boxes work (sort of)

So beginning yesterday we have no lights on our ONT. It is plugged into the wall in a working outlet. If you wish the emergency battery button, it comes to life for about 30a seconds, we have cable again, but then poof, everything turns off again (phone, internet, and tv).
Strangely the cable boxes still get the correct time and will show the channel you turn except with a message that thee is no signal.
I called Verizon tech support that could not even begin to give me help and now I have to wait 3 days waiting for a technician to come out as we sit dead in the water.
Any suggestions, thoughts? We did have a power outage the day before but it lasted all of 30 minutes so I cant believe it is a dead backup battery (the battery itself is only 4the months old).

If you're certain the power outlet is working and there are no loose cables, it sounds like the power supply failed. A technician visit is most likely the best way to get this fixed.
Good Luck.

• Frequent FAIL light on my FiOS ONT

I just got FiOS a month ago or so. I frequently get a blinking red FAIL light on my ONT, and when that happens I have no TV, no phone, and no internet. To"fix" it I have to disconnect my battery backup unit, power off the ONT, wait a few seconds, then reconnect the battery and power the ONT on again. About two minutes later, everything's fine.
Normally (?) this seems to happen once every few days, but it seems like when I use my washer and dryer, it happens like once an hour or more. The ONT is in my basement, fairly close to the washer and dryer.
So, I thought maybe the washer and dryer are causing voltage fluctuations for the house current - they have big electrical motors that turn on and off. So I put a line filter on the ONT - no improvement. Then, I just unplugged the house current from the ONT and let it run off the battery backup - but it still fails frequently when the washer and dryer are on. So, I think this means the house current is not the problem.
Could the ONT be getting some sort of RF interference? This seems really weird!
By the way, the ONT is the 612A model. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just wanted to update - a week or so after I posted, I did in fact call for service. A Verizon guy came out, did some testing, and then ended up replacing the entire ONT box. It's been almost a couple months now, and ZERO outages. Everything's been working perfectly since then.
So, I'm pretty sure the cause of the dropouts was some sort of electrical interference, but nothing else has changed except the ONT. So evidently it was too vulnerable to interference.
Anyway, everything's ok now.
Glad to hear all is better. I love my FIOS internet.

• ONT VID red light - optical power too low

When technician installed FiOS two months ago, he told me the red light might be due to the construction work (new community, lot of houses are being built here) where "the box" is. And it should go away after the construction if not I was told to call Verizon. That is what I did this morning but they refuse to send someone to look at it because they don't see anything wrong from their computer. What gives?! I mean I don't have any service issue right now but I'm afraid I might have service interruption in the future, and if I do, I don't want to wait several days without cable and internet for technician to fix it.

We have not received a response in reference to your issue. Please repost if you are still experiencing a problem.

• Sleep Light ont work

Hello every one! Since I ever got my iBook 5 months ago, I have noticed theres no sleep light... one day, when I was in a hurry, I closed the lid a bit too hard, and the sleep light turned for a half of a second, then it was gone... any suggestions?

The sleep light board plugs into the logic board. If extra pressure made it turn on briefly, it sounds like the connection might be loose. it would take a fair amount of disassembly to check the connection and plug the connector in securely. If the iBook was taken apart for servicing at some point, it's possible that the sleep light wasn't reconnected properly and is loose in its socket.
You can look at the instructions for removing the logic board at ifixit and get an idea of what would be involved in getting to the sleep light. You don't want to actually remove the logic board--just look at the pictures and towards the end you will see where the sleep light plugs in. As I recall, it is a black and red twisted wire cable.

You will have to decide for yourself if it's worth the effort.

• Can electrical surges go through the FIOS ONT Box

On Sept 8th something hit my Fios line and caused loss of equipment. There were no storms or electrical outages on Sept 8th. I was at my computer online when I got a message saying that my Ethernet was disconnected. Seconds later my system shut down. At first I had thought that I had a power failure but the lights never went out. Two computer systems that were on line are totally gone. On the third computer system the onboard Ethernet port is fried. My plasma TV HDMI port 1 is no longer useable. The cordless phones which I had just purchased two weeks ago are also fried. When this happened I lost the phone service, internet, and TV. I opened the ONT box and found that all the lights were out. I then plugged in a phone to check to see if I had a dial tone at the ONT. There was no power and no dial tone. I attempted to contact FIOS repairs using my cell phone. After being on hold for 3 1/2 hours I gave up. I called my daughter to login on line and chat with a Verizon tech. After an hour wait time she got through. The earliest available appointment to come to my home was for Sunday Sept 11th. Which meant that all my services would be down for 4 days. Yesterday, Sept 10th I noticed that some of the lights that were out on the router were back on. I tried the phones but they were still out. Then I tried the TV's. I managed to get 2 of three TV's working. The High Def TV would not come on. I disconnected the HDMI cable and attached a coaxial cable and the picture came on.Went out to the ONT box and most of the lights came back on. The internet light on the router was now lit but no activity on the Ethernet. I installed a wireless card on the machine that was still running and managed to get that online. All of my systems are plugged into surge arrestors. That includes the TV's, Router, computers and cordless phones. The Verizon tech had just left my home minutes ago. The Ethernet ports on the router were fried. The router was replaced. The DVR box that was connected to my Plasma was replaced due to the HDMI ports being fried. HDMI port 1 on my plasma was also no longer working. Switched over to HDMI port 2 and the picture came back on. Anything that was attached to the 2 computer systems were also fried. The 3rd system was offline when this had happened and the only thing that was effected was the Ethernet pot being fried. The tech said that no surge could come through the fiber optic network. If that statement is true then why were none of the surge suppressors tripped. And why would I suffer all this damage. It seems to me that the surge had come through and hit the FIOS box and anything that was connected was fried. Is this possible? I need some answers to explain just what caused this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no electrical connection between the Verizon Central Office and the ONT. It is strictly optical, so there is no conductor for the surge to travel down from the Central Office. So the ONT cannot be electrically damaged from the Optical end of the connection.
However the ONT could be damaged from Coax or Ethernet end, or the ONT power supply could be 'fried' by a surge in the local power line. The Scenario is that if the surge voltage is high enough, it breaks the isolation normally provided by the power supplies in the equipment, and can propagate down the Coax and/or Ethernet cable and/or HDMI cable from either end. . In that case the ONT can effectively be 'fried' by having the surge propagate through the Coax or Ethernet (if you have Ethernet on the ONT instead of MoCA) to the ONT. It doesn't take a whole lot of energy to fry Coax or Ethernet ports on the devices.
The typical scenario is either some sort of accident drops a high tension line onto much lower voltage transmission line (this sometime happens when a vehicle collides with, and takes down a telephone pole, or large branch falls on a line). The other scenario is a direct lightning strike on the local distribution line. Either way, equipment that is supposed to see only 120VAC can in fact seen voltages in the thousand or tens of thousands of volts until the electric company's switching equipment either clear the fault, or shut down the line(s).. In either situation, considerable damage can be inflicted on just about anything electronic that was connected at the time. The energy delivered by a lightning bolt vastly exceeds the surge protection provided by any consumer surge protector.
From where you sit, whether it is the optical end that was damaged, or the ethernet/coax end of the ONT, the ONT will no longer provide service for you.
Also my experience with home use surge arresters is they cannot handle anywhere enough energy to be especially useful.
They also assume that the surge isn't 'common mode'. BTW, I am an Electrical Engineer with education in high voltage transmisson system and insulation.

• Quantum Gateway G1100 wifi blinking light

About 3 weeks ago we had FIOS installed. (50/50 internet + TV PACKAGE)
I noticed the last few weeks that the wifi icon on the router blinks white, then fast red. The wifi usually works and we havent' seen any major issues but according to the manual the light should stay solid white. (The blinking means reconnecting etc.)
When I contacted FIOS support they suugested to reset the ONT battery, but no battery is installed as apparently it wasn't needed if you are not using phone etc. Is something going on with this router or is this a normal occurance?
Cheers

ponsholm wrote:
What do you mean associating/disassociating? You mean a wifi device that disconnects abruptly?
In a sense. Many devices, such as smartphones will often cycle the wireless radio off while they are on battery and not actively doing anything. If the light is trying to indicate this type of activity, it may just be normal to see happen.
Just some thoughts to ponder with. Otherwise, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a firmware problem, or if this is just truly a cosmetic thing.

• How do I open the door to my Optical Network Terminal (ONT) to replace the backup battery

I have an ONT that looks like this: http://www.verizon.com/cs/groups/public/documents/adacct/bbux400-open.jpg How do I open the door to it to replace the battery? Thanks Ben
Solved!

My ONT BBU (Battery Backup Unit) looks just like yours. The door is where it says ONT 314 and Verizon.
On mine, I can just grip the edge of the lower right and corner of the door, under the lights and buttons where it says SOHO, and pull the door open.
That exposes the battery.

• ONT ethernet vs. Coax? which is better?

Hi,
I'm currently using coax from the ONT to my router, but I was thinking of switching it to the ethernet port and using an ethernet cable from the ONT to my MI4244WR routers' WAN port for internet, and using the coax throughout the house for just FiOS TV. My TV menu takes an extra long time to load, and also so do the widgets. I would like to split data and fios TV traffic to see if seperate media helps the situation.
Has anyone had any experience with this, and if so, was it positive?
Also, is there anything special that I need to do to get it to work?
Thanks!
Ken

I'd leave your current configuration alone. The fact is the traffic is already split. The FIOS optical cable that runs to your house carries 3 different frequencies/colors/wavelengths of light. One is for Internet, one is for TV, and one is for phone. The ONT separates these out and puts the proper one on the proper type of cable. The setup you currently have is precisely what most FIOS users have (including me) and I don't see any reason to change it.

• Quantum Gateway Breaking my MOCA at ONT

So I got a new Quantum Gateway router on Friday. Tried to install it and it wouldn't connect to the internet. I called support and they stated that there was an outage and new routers couldnt be activated. The tech said however, disconnect your current router to release the IP address lease. So at the end of the night, i unplugged coax and went to sleep.
The next morning I thought i would try the new router, no luck and then back to my old router and no luck.
I call support and he tries to hit reset like 10 times from his side. Nothing happens and the WAN green light on the gateway wouldn't light. He says he cannot do anything and i need a tech who would come on Monday. which would mean another day without internet. I am annoyed at this point, because nothing had changed in my house to cause issues with cable.
I go down to my ONT and the MOCA light is red. Being frustrated, I finally decide to pull the power from the ONT and put it back in. Sure enough, MOCA light goes green and voila my old router works.
I think cool, I will try the new router. I have the same problem again, a red internet light on front and no green WAN on back. And now my old router wont work anymore again. So off I got to the garage again, and pull power. Plug it back in and MOCA is back to green and the old router works.
Makes me wonder what the new router could possibly do to bust up my MOCA connection at the ONT.
Any thoughts? At this point, i will wait for the tech on Monday, but I think this is wacky.

You did not release the DHCP lease before changing routers. It is linked to the router MAC address.
You can reconnect the first router and go into it's settings to release the lease and immediately turn it off so it does not reconnect. Then change routers the new router will pick up a new lease or you can simply turn off the new router for at least a few hours, Sometimes requires overnight, the lease on the old router should expire and the new router should pick up a new lease. Also you could call Verizon and they can release the lease for you if you tell them you need to break the lease. You probably had an inexperienced tech. When they are no help call back later and hope for a different one. Weekends and nights you usually get offshore support. Normal weekday business hours you usually get better results with a tech in the US.

• Battery Backup light comes on for no apparent reason

Every so often the light on the battery backup unit (BBU) that indicates the unit is using battery power comes on even though there was no power failure and there is AC power to the unit. The first time this happened I called FIOS tech support and they indicated that if the light was on, the unit was operating off of battery power even if AC power was available, and that I would need to reset the unit. They then took me through the procedure for resetting the unit:
1) Open the case to the BBU.
2) Unplug the battery.
3) Unplug the AC power.
4) Wait at least 3 minutes.
5) Plug the battery back in.
6) Plug in the AC power.
This seems to do the trick and I assume it also resets the ONT.
I have 2 questions:
1) Why would the unit decide to operate off of battery power when there was AC power available and there had been no loss of AC power to begin with?
2) Is it true that if the battery light is on the unit is operating off of battery power even in the presence of AC power?
Any thoughts on these question would be appreciated.

• ONT: Ethernet port & DGL-4500 router

Hello everyone,
Currently I have only FIOS Internet and do not have any plans to get TV service, so this will make the setup substantially more flexible.
Right now I have my ActionTec configured as a bridge and connected to a Coaxial cable. From the ActionTec, I connect to my DGL-4500. This is my main router. I've had to use the ActionTec as a bridge due to the coaxial cable.
I would prefer to ditch the ActionTec completely and connect my DGL-4500 directly to the ONT via that Ethernet Port. However, there's 2 problems: First, the ethernet port on the ONT has a bunch of clear goo in it, and it's extremely hard to get out. What the heck is this? Secondly, the light is competely turned off, even after plugging it into my router.
The light being off, according to my investigation, is deliberate. This is because you cannot have the MocA and the Ethernet enabled simultaneously. If this is true, I would have to get technical support to enable it remotely, right? I always hate having to call verizon, so if this can be avoided that would be ideal.
The first thing I want to know is if I would benefit by ditching the ActionTec as a bridge and connecting my DGL-4500 router directly. Is there any extra overhead? If the router does no processing and literally acts as a Layer 2 switch, then it shouldn't be too bad. However, I'm worried that it is processing traffic.
Secondly, how easy is it to get the ethernet port enabled? What would you guys recommend for my setup?

• Router drops 2nd night in a row, internet light is amber! Also I need a tech to upgrade to 50/20??

I called yesterday to troubleshoot my internet, it turns out that the ont needed to be reset. I decided while I was on the phone, to inquire about upgrading my service. I told them I wanted 50/20 so they started to provision my line only to find out I would need a tech to roll out to perform the upgrade. At that point, I decided to just upgrade to 35/35 because I didnt want to deal with the hassle of having a a tech roll out to my house. Why is it that I would need a tech to upgrade to 50./20?? Kinda **bleep** about that.. because that high upload for a residential service with no static ip is retarded.
Also this morning I wake up to see my internet light is amber but my power/wan coax/lan coax lights are green?? Whats the deal??
Im starting to regret making the switch to fios..

Hi,
Let me tell you something, my friend contacted fios tech support via chat because he had problems with
internet connection and speed, the fios live tech contacted some kind of network group and they fix the problem,
Just make sure you checked everything on your side,in your case you already checked your router, but do not
forget cables and splitter (if you have),
if you unplug and reconnect your cables and the splitter is ok, will be time to contact fios tech support.
Good Luck!

• Lose Internet when Extending Coax from ONT to MI424 Rev. I Router

I need to move my MI424 Rev i router. It's now connected to the ONT with maybe 8 ft of coax and no splitters. I need to add at least 50 ft of RG6 and move it. However, whenever I add more than about 10 ft, I lose the internet connection. Neither the WAN Coax or WAN Ethernet lights will come on. But if I use only a short 6 ft length, it does reconnect and works fine.
Has anybody experienced this? I'm thinking the router must be defective, but maybe I'm missing something. I know I could switch to a CAT5 connection to the ONT, but I'd prefer using the RG6 since I already have spare coax wired in place. I'd also like to be sure there's no problem with the router's coax connection. Thanks a lot.

This sounds odd to me. I think the long length of coax could be the reason. Maybe a signal amplifier or splitter on the line would help?
I have coax coming from the ont going up to my attic to a splitter then there's about 45-50 feet of coax going to my 2nd bedroom where my router is then another 5 feet of coax to the router from the wall outlet and I see no issues at all.
Could be a bad router, but sounds like the signal after so much length is degrading.

• ZyXel Prestige 861 Modem - vDSL Lights Flashing/Blinking Green

Hi All,
The internet used to work, but now it's just flashing/blinking green. Hence the internet has gone down, and I can't figure where is the problem.
I live in a apartment (23 Floors), and the modem is setup this way:
Telephone Cable => Modem => Ethernet Cable => Router
I changed the telephone cable a few times, and even switched to a different jack that used to work (I moved the modem from the living room to the bedroom 2 years ago).
But it is still flashing/blinking green on the vDSL lights.
Also it seems like nobody had any issues with their Verizon services, could it be a hardware issue that the 5 year old ZyXel Presitage 861 modem has broken down?
Is it possible to switch to another modem, for example, Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem?
Thanks all

Well, I thought in the meantime while the network is down (tech is arriving tomorrow), why don't I try to debug the problem myself?
I've tested that the phone line itself works, but I don't know about the jack.
The ONT works too (The Verizon Phone Support said that ONT looks fine), so... It's some physical connection between the basement and my apartment (located 23rd floors high). I've tried all the jacks in my house, which they used to work when I was deciding the best place to put my modem and wireless router).
So it's either the modem, or the physical wiring is broken. So why not try a quick fix?
Anyways, if it's somewhere of the wiring, and also extremely difficult to fix it, I guess I need to find another apartment.
