No logon Servers Win 8.1

Hi all,
I am apart of the I.T. support team at a school and we have just purchased 5 Surface Pro 3's. We have loaded windows 8.1 Enterprise on them and domain joined them, but we can't log in on them on anything else other than local accounts. Whenever another account is tried it goes to log on and then brings up the error "no logon servers available". We think the problem relates to our group policy but we have been unable to find the cause of it.
We are running windows server 2008 R2 hosted on a virtual server. Group policy currently handles pushing our wireless profile, we have also tried to blocking group policy's and adding this manually.

I've tried talking to Carbonite support about this, but they don't seem to be able to provide in depth support about the exact process carbonite goes through to backup hyper-v vm's. According to their support page here - http://support.carbonite.com/articles/Server-Windows-Hyper-V-BackupIt looks like carbonite will use one of two methods for vm backup; child vm snapshot method and saved state method. My question is, for the child vm snapshot method, does it actually take a snapshot in the vm snapshot directory and then create the carbonite compressed backup in the designated directory? I tried running a test backup and watched the snapshot directory but it never seemed to put any files there, or change in size during the whole process. The main reason for the question is, I'm trying to figure out how much free space we'd need to do a...

As I am not particularly tech savvy, am not the one who set up this network drive, I dont want to interfere with it too much. I simply want to be able to get a basic understanding of the issue. We had set up a previous share, since deleted, that allowed
us to have a shared folder to work on documents between the US and Ireland. This new share has been working fine up until yesterday, when we got the above error messages when trying to access the share. Later in the day, it just worked again. Today, I go to

    Hi Tomas,
Did your computer join the domain? How did you access that shared resource?
Please turn off your firewall temporarily and type the correct UNC address to access for test:
    \\servername\sharename \file_path
If it doesn't work, use the IP address of the remote server when you try to connect to the network share.

  • Changing network password...There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request in Windows 8 and 8.1 Enterprise

We currently are running Windows 7 in our enterprise environment. Everything works as expected when the user tries to
change their network password via crtl+alt+del, change a password. We are now testing and trying to deploy Windows 8.1 to a test group and are running into an issue when any AD user tries to change their network password. The user can logon to the
PC just fine when the PC is on the domain, however as soon as they go to change their password they are getting the error "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request". The end result is that the user can not change
their password. We tried this via connected to the dock with a network cable, on corporate wireless, with a Windows 8.1 machine completely patched over with all Microsoft patches, and a Windows 8.1 machine that is not patched and are running into the same
issue. Has anyone ran into this? Is there something that has to be changed on the infrastructure side?

To configure the Password Replication Policy for an RODC, a member of the Domain Admins group is required.
By default, RODC's do not cache any user or computer passwords, neither a user or computer will be able to authenticate. You can however specifiy that their passwords be cached either by including a group or specific user in the Password Replication Policy

  • There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request

I am trying to recover from a catastrophic SBS 2008 disk failure.
This machine was a stand-alone Domain Controller, and as luck would (NOT!) have it, both disks in a RAID1 configuration failed in rapid succession.  Therefore, all I have is server backups to work with.
I have tried many permutations to get this data restored and the domain functional again, but so far, no dice.
I have successfully restored the system disk data from the most recent backup, but when I go to boot the system, I get a reboot loop.  When I tell it not to reboot on error, it gives me:
S c00002e2 Directory Services could not start because of the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning. Error Status: 0xc0000001. Please shutdown this system and
reboot into Directory Services Restore mode, check the event log for more detailed information.
When I reboot into Directory Services Restore Mode, the system quickly says that AD is clean, but doesn't take me to a command prompt, it takes me to the login screen. When I try to log in as Domain admin, it says:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request
And I'm stuck.  Unless I can somehow find out what the local admin credentials are, I can't get in to the system.
I have removed the disk and put it in a Hard drive enclosure, so I can access the files.
At first, I had some complaints about the disk driver, so I found the correct driver version from Intel to circumvent that problem when doing the restore.
I can boot from the installation disk, but I can't use wbadmin from there in the restore mode.
Right now, I'm trying an earlier backup, but something tells me I might have some real trouble here.  This has turned in to quite the mess.
I have also tried reinstalling the OS to a new RAID array, but am loath to try putting the backup on there for fear I will be taken back to square one.
Do I have to start from scratch and recreate the domain and rejoin all the computers to it, or do I have a better alternative?
I have actually restored a SBS 2008 stand-alone DC from backup before, but that was RAID 5, so slightly different. I seem to remember having some driver headaches with that, but I did overcome them by getting into recovery and replacing the driver files
on the disk.  Tried that here, but still no luck.

  • "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request." when trying to access a shared folder in domain environment.

    Hi,
I already have a windows server 2003 working as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) and now I created another windows server 2012 to work as an Additional Domain Controller (ADC).
    - PDC is doing (Active directory domain services + DNS + DHCP)
    - ADC is doing (Active directory domain services + DNS)
For testing purposes, I shutdown the PDC and let the ADC up and running. Now, Whenever I try to access a shared folder on any server in the domain, I got this message "\\x.x.x.x is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."
Actually, the replication of AD objects and DNS records between the PDC and ADC is done successfully.  I also can resolve names using the ADC's DNS. Also, I can ping servers hosting the files I want to access.
    Appreciate your help.

The PDCe is required for a lot of services, to include DFS.
Turn the PDC back on and try again.  If it's still not working, ensure the file server has the correct DNS entries on the NIC.
I think I see what you were trying to test.  The issue is that not all DCs are equal.  Yes, they hold the same information, but some DCs do extra work.  That is why FSMOs exist.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Trying to process cube on server erroring with No Logon servers available

I am trying to deploy my cube on a remote server for the first time.
I used the deployment wizard to build an XMLA script which I successfully ran on the server.
The datasource is set up to use my network credentials to login. This works fine when I run the cube locally.
However after running the XMLA script and I try to process the cube, I get the error :
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
I don't know much about windows security, and am stumped as what to do next.
Not sure if I am doing anything right as this is my first BI project, is there a better way to deploy and update the cube?
    Or recommended settings.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jon

    Hi,
Here are some troubleshooting steps. Take a look into the following screen.
In order for the cube to process, the data warehouse database used in Connection String (This is defined in cube's data source) should have data read access against the target Data Warehouse database. To troubleshoot this click on the Test Connection button.
It should return "Test Connection Succeeded" message. If the message is an error which means current windows log-in does not have access to the Data warehouse database. Normally in production environments there is a dedicated windows account to do
    these kind of work.
1 - Create a windows User Account which has relevant access permissions.
2 - Grant permission to access the Data Warehouse database to that user (Read access would enough)
3 - In SSAS Server Add this account as Server Administrator. To do that follow the following screenshot.
4 - Once this is done browse the data source of the SSAS database (<Your SSAS Database>\Data Sources\<Your Data Source Name>) and click properties (This is also in the very first screenshot)
5 - Click on "Impersonation Info" under Security Settings (This is also in the very first screenshot)
6 - Out of four options in that screen choose "Use a specific Windows user name and password"
7 - Enter the User ID and password you created for this purpose and click OK.
8 - Perform the "Test Connection" procedure (mentioned in the very biging of the post) and you should be good now.
9 - Process the cube and you should be able to process it without any errors.

  • Can I use a VB SCript to enable Num Lock at logon in Win 8.1 with Update 1?

Hope this is the correct place for this - someone directed me to the TechNet Forums from the Windows 8.1 general forum, and then from the 'Windows Forms General' forum to one on Scripting and now to this one on Group Policy this one.  Hope I have now
got to the correct technical forum to answer the question below, which is driving me nuts.
In the good old days of Windows XP, I was able to ensure Num Lock was on at boot up by the use of a small VB Script file, which was this:
    set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    WshShell.SendKeys "{NUMLOCK}"
It is really annoying with Win 8.1 that on Boot Up, AND
every time I want to switch user, Num Lock goes off (even if it was on before switching user).  I want Num Lock to be on at Boot Up AND stay on when switching user.
I have seen the suggested remedies in other forums about changing the appropriate value in the Registry (which does not work until after logon) and changing the BIOS setting (which does not work because Windows overrules the BIOS setting).  The question
is whether the VBScript solution will work with Win 8.1 with Update 1?
If it will, in which folder do I put the Script file in order for it to work for all Users?
And do I have to make the any changes to Group Policy to make it work, and if so what changes, as seems to be the case if the OS was Win 7 (mine is Win 8.1 Update 1, and NOT Win 8 Pro).
Thanks in advance for any help on this one.  Please note, I am NOT an expert user, so please try and explain any shorthand you use that you take for granted but which I won't understand!!
    Neil

Thanks for this reply, RBoyde, but........
... as my orignal message suggested, I have hardly a clue what you are saying and the link doesn't help me understand any better either (as it doesn't seem to help with how to do something with an existing Registry key).
    To be speciific:
    1.  what script do I write?
    2.  where do I save it so it works for all users at logon AND on switching users?
    3.  how do I "run it as a logon script via group policy"????
Perghaps I need to add that this is a single, standalone, home PC, with 2 users, running Win 8.1 Core/Basic.  Also, I cannot find the Group Policy Editor on the PC; when I type either 'gpedit' or 'gpedit.msc' into Run, I get a message saying that the
file canot be found on the PC.  This when logged on as user with administrator powers.  It is not found either from a Command prompt.  And there does not seem to be a GP Snap-in available via the MM Console.
Please clarify for me what looks to be a helpful response - for I am just a 'bear of little brain' (as per Winnie the Pooh).

  • Win7 PC w/ new Active Directory user not able to logon to Win 2K Domain

    Hello Friends,
I'm having an issue where our Windows 2000 domain controller does not seem to be on speaking terms with a newly created user on a Windows 7 pro machine.
    Here's what I know:
User & Computer are both in AD and work! I've logged in with the new user (Donna) on several machines and other users can log into the computer.
DNS appears to be configured properly on the Win7 workstation (pointed to DC)
DNS is running on the DC and doesn't appear to have any issues.
DCDIAG looks good, all passes except BASC, that failed.
Locally, I've added the domain account to the machine in the users control panel
Removing the account and the computer from the domain didn't work (I've also renamed the computer)
I thought about just renaming the current account that is working to the new user, however, I've always had issues after doing so.
    Any thoughts?

  • Error when setting GPO Display information about previous logon during user logon on Wins 7

We recently try to deploy a GPO on our network (All Server 2008 and Windows 7) to show previous logons during
user logon. The setting is located in Computer Configuration| Policies |
Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Logon Options | Display
information about previous logons during user logon = Enabled. Our domain
level is set to Windows Server 2008. I verified that it is Windows Server 2008
    on Domain and Trust.
Here is the article about this setting
Active Directory Domain Services: Last Interactive
    Logon
But after we deploy the setting, we are no longer able to login
to any of our windows 7 machines. All of them got an error message said :
“Security policies on this computer are set to display information about the
last interactive logon. Windows could not retrieve this information. Please
contact your network administrator for assistance.”
    The setting
worked on windows server 2008. I was able to login to DC and revise the setting,
so we can log back in the windows 7 machines.
    Anyone has experience this
issue before? I looked up all of the web and only thing they said is to make
sure the domain functional level must be set to Windows Server 2008, which it
    is.

    Hi,
Have we also applied this setting to domain controllers?  To make this policy work properly, we also need to apply this setting to domain controllers. If not, users will not be able to log on to the system.

  • 2 Win XP logons with same iTunes library - HELP!

My wife and I both have Nanos. We each have separate logons on Win XP. We each have our own iTunes with our own playlists. However, we both use the same folder for our iTunes library. For the first time, I ripped some CDs on her Win XP logon on her iTunes. Now, the tracks show up in her iTunes library but not on mine. Is there a way to make iTunes scan the library folder to make it update my library with the missing tracks?
Many thanks in advance! I have searched the forum threads and iTunes Help to no avail...
    Heston

But, if I add the root folder (D:/Music), then won't iTunes duplicate files that I have already added from that root folder? The folders where the new files were placed are all subfolders of the same root folder, so adding those folders wouldn't seem to make sense. I can, of course, manually launch each new file to add it to the iTunes library, but how laborious! If there is truly no "scan function" (sync) in iTunes, it needs to be added. I have had an iPod since 2002, and just switched from Media Jukebox to iTunes this year. Media Jukebox does what I am talking about above, plus much more, but, alas, it will not play the BS protected iTunes purchased files...

  • Remote Desktop Connection Server 2012 Clients only using on DC as Logon Server.

I am using Server 2012 and have an RDC Server running on a VM.  Originally I had ordered the licensed version as Essentials was provided to me which does not allow for a full domain environment, which is required for the RDC server.  Anyway, I
used Eval versions to get started, not thinking or realizing that the DC would never be able to get Activated since it is an Eval.  So after 4 days I have finally, loaded Server 2012 on a new VM, promoted to DC, Transferred FSMO roles...DNS is up and
replicating across both DC's. The Eval keeps shutting off and was going to demote it and remove, but whenever it is shutdown the Clients receive a "No Logon Servers are available " error.  I start up the old DC and it works.  I doublechecked
all of the roles have been moved, I checked the RDC gateway, everything points to the same Domain information, but when I check an account using 'CMD set' it shows the old DC as the Logon Server.  Is there something I am missing in the RD Gateway or somewhere
else.  Is there a way to force it to use the new DC?   I have tried setting the options in remote desktop connection to use a particular TS Gateway setting and it doesnt seem to work.   Can someone please help me think about this and offer a
suggestion or let me know if you need more info.  I can figure nothing else out at this point.
    Thanks so much in Advance.

it sounds like your clients / rdc servers may still be pointing to the old DC for DNS.
Can you check you have updated DNS on the clients to talk to your new domain controller.
    Regards,
    Denis Cooper
    MCITP EA - MCT
Help keep the forums tidy, if this has helped please mark it as an answer
The new DC is the only DNS server listed on the RDC Server and is the only DNS listed for the clients other than the gateway which have as a secondary.  If I change the static on the old DC I cannot login, as soon as I put it back, I can login and it
shows that DC as the logon server.
I did a simple recursive test on both DNS servers....The new Domain Controller passes, the Old One which I am trying to remove, does not.
I will reply with any other updates as I continue to look into this and thanks for the suggestions.
So I also Pinged the domain from the RDC Server as suggested and it replies back with the old DC IP.
    Not sure why.

  • MSTSC (win 8.1) crashes after entering credentials

    Hello,
I need a bit of help here.
I have 2 windows 8.1 pro English, patched to the latest patches and EMET 4.1 with recommended settings, mallwarebites and System Center Endpoint Protection latest version on it) clients members and domain members.
They cannot connect to other machines (server 2012 R2) within the domain and 1 REMOTE machine running windows 8.1 pro pc (not a domain member) using RDP (mstsc.exe) but they CAN connect to a remote server 2008R2 server in the same remote site (not part
    of the domain)
From those same machines I CAN connect to all machines in the domain and remote using the Remote Desktop Connection Manager v 2.2.
From the REMOTE machines mentioned before I CAN connect to the domain servers (win 2012 R2) using the same credentials
So it seems to be caused by something on these machines but I cannot figure out what it is.

I THINK it started after a patch Tuesday in april but am not sure.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi Jeremy,
tried the first step already but to no avail.
    Regarding the logs:
    Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RDPClient%4Operational
    ON SERVER: eventID 226
RDPClient_SSL: An error was encountered when transitioning from TsSslStateDisconnected to TsSslStateDisconnected in response to 25 (error code 0x8000FFFF).
ONCE at march 31 and about 10 on May 4 but nothing after that.
ON CLIENT: RDPClient_SSL: An error was encountered when transitioning from TsSslStateDisconnected
to TsSslStateDisconnected in response to 25 (error code 0x8000FFFF).
once today and once on may 4. However the last entry after a failed and logged attempt is Server supports SSL = supported. then nothing
    more
    Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager%4Admin
EMPTY ON BOTH SERVER AND CLIENT and last entry May 4
    Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager%4OperationalOn
server and client: An error occurred when transitioning from Initialized in response to EvCreated. (ErrorCode 0xD00002FE) but in both cases that was on april 16 or longer ago. when setting up a new connection that fails, no additional errors are
    logged
    Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager%4Admin
    On Server: 0 events
On Client: ONLY events Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server. Last entry April 4, 2014 and nothing after that.
    Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager%4Operational
    On Server: no errors
On Client: Last entry during an attempt = Server supports SSL = supported.
I tested with a different win 8.1 client with the same user accounts but that works fine. Unless you have some more suggestions, or anyone else for that matter, I will reinstall the laptops and close this matter.
Thanks so far for your support!
    Best regards,
    Panicz
