No longer able to access data on external hard drive via smb or cifs

Hi there,
I connected my external hard drive (Maxtor One-TouchII-01) via USB to my router (It's a German Fritz!Box).
Before the update to Mavericks I established the conncetion using the command "smb://...". The HD is formatted as FAT32, because I need to connect to the HD from my workplace, where there are only Windows PCs.
After updating to Mavericks I can't read the data stored on the external HD any more. I still can connect to the HD with the same smb-command line, however, read-access to the folders on the HD is denied, because I don't have sufficient rights to view the content. So far I haven't been able to change this. The  folder "properties" are set to "you have restricted access" (I don't know the exact words of the message in English as I translated it from German).
The strange thing is, my synch-tool can sitll read and write data on the external HD as soon as I have established the connection.
I already tried to connect to the HD using the root user, but it didn't work either. There still is this small red "no entry" sign on the folder icon.
Trying to connect via the protocol "cifs" causes the same problem.
Another thing I don't understand is that since the update I can't use the former name of my HD with the smb-command  which was "smb://fritz!nas". Now it only works with "smb://fritz.box". Maybe this has something do with the problem?
I'd appreciate any kind of help, because after searching the internet for months I still haven't found a solution.
Thank you very much
canella

Excellent, well done. I have to say that talktalk were useless, they repeatedly sent me instructions for setting up an emil account and did not seem able to understand that it was the login that would not work. Thank you.

  • Install data from external hard drive?

Hi, we have our old macbook data saved on external hard drive (old laptop had water damage but able to retrieve data). I now have new macbook, how do I install data from external hard drive to new macbook? Is it super easy? I didn't want to set up new laptop until I could understand how to install all our old data. Thanks

Do you have the appropriate cable to connect the external drive to to new Macbook?
If you do, the rest is easy. Connect the drive and start up the new Mac. The first steps in the setup will be to enter information about yourself, etc. etc. As you proceed you will be asked if you want to bring in data from another place. Just follow the directions, and the Mac Setup Assistant will do everything for you.
The critical part is making sure the external is corectly connected to the new computer.

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

  • Recover data from external hard drive that was Windows format and connected on a Macbook Pro. Did I lose everything? What happened?

Hi there this is my first question here!
I connected my external hard drive originally formatted on PC on my new Macbook. The first time I connected it I could see all my files but today I connected it and after I couldn't see any file nor even on my pc appears as NO NAME with a different name and nothing on it. I think was reformatted, any help to recover all my data?
It's really important stuff for me

If the Apple Store couldn't get files off of the drive, it is unlikely that you will be able to. If you have backups, those would be the best way to go. You could also try booting up the computer and holding down T to boot into Target Disk Mode. Plug the broken computer into another one with FireWire and see if it works to recover data from external hard drive. If you can see it, try booting up the broken computer while holding down Option. Choose Recovery HD from the menu, then choose to Reinstall OS X.
It is unlikely that this will work, because I'm pretty sure that the Apple Store would have tried this. You could try using expensive software to get files off the drive, but it would be risky and the results might not be any good.

how do you set a security password to control access to an external hard drive?

The only way to reliably protect data, especially on an external hard drive, is to encrypt it.  Permissions don't have to be respected.  One way to encrypt data is to create an encrypted sparse bundle disk image with Disk Utility.  See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
(Be sure to use the 256-bit encryption.)
Alternately, you could use some whole-disk encryption, though I have no experience with any of the software for doing that.  You could try the following:

I don't know that I would recommend the product being advertised inappropriately by keynesis.

Last time when I was in Rio, I took part in the famous Carnival there with my boyfriend and we took a lot of interesting photos there. About one week ago, one of my friends asked me to show her the photos. However, it turned out to be inaccessible and the PC can not read the data on the drive. And the PC suggested me to format the external hard drive for reusing it again.

There's Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. The cleanest way to do it is Setup Assistant, but you only get that option once when you fire up a fresh install of OSX. If you're past that, you could reinstall OSX by booting with Command-R, or you could use Migration Assistant.

  • How do i deny access to an External Hard Drive while using user switching

    Hello,
I have a QuickSilver running Tiger (Leopard upgrade coming when RAM arrives) and have 4 users ( fast user switching enabled). I would like to deny all access to the external hard drives except for the my account on the box.
I have already have gone into the info Sharing & Permissions and only allowed myself to have access, others have "no access" however when I switch user (using fast user switching) they assume ownership of the drives and have access.
Just so you understand the overall direction I would like to go. I'm a photographer and my images are loaded on various external hard drives which is plugged in to the desktop. Family uses the desktop and do not want them to access my work on the external hard drive, however I do need to connect via my laptop to edit images via ethernet which I would obviously enter the admin username and password for the desktop when challenged.
    Any ideas???
    dsh
P.S. I also changed the permissions via unix to 700 but guess what it doesn't matter! It still assumed the other users ownership upon switch. Does anyone have a proven solution?

When you Get Info on the Drives, who is the owner of the Drives? What exactly are the permissions? Do all of the other users use an admin account? You might have to chmod the root user of the drive to your admin account, change the user to no-access, and everyone to no-access.
how does one "chmod the root user of the drive to your admin account"?
can that be done with terminal inside an administrator account, or does root need to be enabled and logged into?

  • If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?

If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?  And would it ask me if I want to initialize (thus erasing it) or eject the hard drive like the OSX 9 did?

I was trying to follow this thread because I was curious about the OS 9 installation - until I realized you have another thread going about the very same subject, albeit with a different subject line.
FWIW: it is best not to double post - things get far too confusing after a while.

Have old MacBook Pro running tiger 10.4 want to save date to external hard drive and buy newer MacBook and still use same drive. Any suggestions, most  WD drives say nothing about os tiger 10.4. The OS compatibility  is much newer on the data.  Totally confused. Not a computer person.

I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures.  Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great.  It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself.  OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component.  If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside  -  went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures).  My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.
10 years ago Seagate was one of the best drives. Now they rate poorly in reviews.

  • To index data in external hard drives

I'm using Time Capsule 500GB and Seagate external hard. My iMac and these two hard drives are connected wirelessly. I want to index data in those drives by using Spotlight but I can only index information in my iMac's internal hard. What should I do to index data in external hard drives?

I resolved this problem. Just go to Time Capsule in Finder and search in the upper right corner of Finder! It was more easier than I expected.

  • How do I transfer time capsul data to external hard drive to free up space?

How do I transfer time capsule data to external hard drive to free up space?

The fastest method is straight copy and paste..
Plug a suitable hard disk into your computer.. format it Mac OS extended journaled (if not already).
Select the folders/files you want to move.. copy and paste them to the external drive..
Double check that the files are copied because the next step will delete the files forever.. there is no trash on the TC.
Delete the files on the TC.
You can also do a full archive of the TC disk to a USB plugged into it by USB.. it must be formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. It must be big enough to hold all data on the TC disk.. best idea is to buy the same size or bigger.. so if you use 2TB TC buy a 2TB or bigger external drive.
    In airport utility select archive.
That will copy everything on the TC disk to the USB drive.. you could then Erase the disk of the TC.. this is super fast if you choose quick erase.. just a few minutes. But the archive will take many hours.. say for 2TB about 12-24hours.. and you cannot use the disk in the TC during that time.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.
