No longer able to access external hard drive

Since upgrading my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion I can no longer mount either of my NAS (iomega and buffalo) I've tried connecting via finder, connecting via IP address. Nothing works it just times out or shows connection failed.
I can connect fine on my old MacBook running Lion and was able to connect with my Pro before the upgrade.
Neither NAS has firmware updates available and the only change is the upgrade to Mountain Lion. Any suggestions how I connect to my back-up drives now?
OSX 10.8.2
Buffalo Linkstation Live LS-CHLv2 2TB
Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive Cloud Edition

OK, I tried that with a couple of music folders. So far so good.
Does this mean I have to select all my music files and add them to the new library file created on the external drive? I'm not sure how or when this problem began. I've had this external drive arrangement working for two years. I suspect it happened with the iTunes 7.5 upgrade but it wasn't noticed until today.
So do I go ahead and recreate the Library file by adding all the music folders into it? I realize I'm going to lose playlists, but that isn't a big deal.

  • My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive

    Hello,
I need you help with this one. My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive. In the System Profiler (under FireWire) the drive is listed as:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Connection Speed: Unknown
Can anyone help me to correct this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!
    Nat

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!
    Thanks,
    Nat

  • Laptop no longer can mount my external hard drive

After updating to Mavericks, my laptop no longer can mount my external hard drive. What on earth is going on here and how can I fix this?

The drive is spinning and I was using it the night before I updated my macbook. It is viewable in disk utility but not in finder, and attempts to mount it are thwarted. The problem is literally coincident with updating the mavericks. When I click verify it didn't appear to have any problems but I will retry when I am back at home and report the findings.
It is a Toshiba 1GB external hard drive and has adequate power. Lights are on, etc.
I have not checked on another computer as do not have one available, but that will be my next step.

  • How do I access external hard drive connected to AirPort Extreme via iPad

    Hello,
How do I access external hard drive connected to AirPort Extreme via iPad / windows laptop.
I donot have a Mac and I use windows laptop.

For your iPad, you will need an app, like FileBrowser, to access the external drive.
For your Windows laptop, you would access the drive like any other network share. The basic format is: \\<servername>\<sharename>, where, in this case, the servername is the base station name and the sharename is the name of the external drive.

  • Best way to access external hard drives wirelessly using AX?

I have an iBook G4 with an airport card and an iMac G3 with a D-link USB wireless adapter. Both work very well with my AX in networking, printing, using airtunes and accessing the internet. I can even see my external hard drive when it's plugged into either machine and mount that drive to the other computer over the network--however the file transfer is extremely slow of course.
Here's what I'd like to do: I plan on getting another external hard drive and would like to be able to connect both computers to either drive wirelessly with good file transfer/access. From what I understand both Linksys and D-link make network storage devices that allow you to do this, but I'm wondering if I then also need a wireless bridge for the iMac?
Can someone give me a run down as to how this all works and what the easiest way to go about doing this is?
    Thanks!

These will allow you to do what you want to do.
Wireless-G Media Storage Link Router with SpeedBooster
All-in-one Internet-sharing Router, Access Point, and Network Storage Link! this is an all-in-one device.
Buffalo Technology Link Station though this will also need an ethernet wireless bridge as well as would this Netgear Storage Device.
This D-Link wireless storage device seems to meet your needs specifically. With this device you still need a wireless router such as the AX.

  • Access external hard drive connected to Airport Extreme USB via Windows & Mac

I have an Airport Extreme and I would like to connect an external hard drive to it via USB so that I can backup pictures, music, documents etc. I need to be able to see the external hard drive from my windows PC. I eventually will be buying a Mac so I would like to be able to also get to my pictures and documents via the MAC as well.
I currenlty have an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV so getting to the external drive from these devices would be a huge bonus also if that is possible.
I recently bought an ioSafe Solo External Hard Drive and I had to return it because it was only formatted for the PC. When I plugged it into my Airport Extreme, I could see the drive via the Airport Disk Utility but I could not see it from my PC and I could not map a drive to it. When I contacted ioSafe support, they said that what I was trying to do was not possible since I did not have a MAC available to me to reformat the drive.
I hope that I am not trying to accomplish the impossible because I will always need to live in a MAC/PC world.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

You must know people with Macs.. it is 2min work to plug a USB drive into a Mac Laptop and format it Mac OS extended with a quick format.. And that is better IMHO than buying a utility or buying a pre-formatted drive which are often more expensive for no very good or obvious reason.
Another option is a Linux boot disk.. Linux distributions have very similar command line tools to the Mac OS. (some are identical) and HFS+ has been available for ages in Linux.

  • Laptop no longer recognizing songs in external hard drive.  Only ones in internal hd.  Says file cannot be found and exclamation pt. to left of song.

My laptop no longer recognizes my songs in the external hard drive.  It still plays the ones stored on my internal hd fine.  It's just started doing this.
The song's names still appear in the music library, but when I try to play the song, anexclamation pt. comes up to the left of the title, and it says the file cannot be located.
OS is Windows 7 Home Premium
    Thanks.

Thank you Tal, sounds like a nice resolution of the username difference problem, i will try this as soon as i get home, but are you sure this will not duplicate all the exhisting songs in my library? Most of my songs were renamed/rated and have a "number of times played" number, which does matter in most of my smart-playlists...
    Thank you in advance.
When I tried my suggestion, I had around 3 three separate folders on my computer which had music in them. The music in these folders was dragged and dropped into iTunes when I was adding it onto my iPhone.
I had foolishly moved some of the music from the other folders and into the music/iTunes folder iTunes then showed the exclamation mark beside these tracks and showed the not found or words to that affect window/popup. I then placed the folders (that contain the music) back to their location which there were at when I originally dragged and dropped them into iTunes, after this the exclamation mark and the not found window naturally did not appear anymore.
    I then done the following:
    iTunes 9:
Choose File > Library > Organize Library.
    A message will pop up.
Place a check next to "Consolidate files" and click OK.
After I had done this, all the folders that contained the music that were in the 3 separate folders, were then placed in one folder, which in my case was,
    C:\Users\MY USERNAME\Music\iTunes\My iPhone\iTunes Media\Music
Sometimes (depending on the device) it can be (your username)/music/iTunes/iTunes music

  • Accessing External Hard Drive through Airport Extreme

I have recently purchased a My Book 500 GB hardrive. I was hoping to utilize the airport feature of accessing the hard drive through both the MacBook Pro and Macbok in my home by hoking it up to the airport express by USB. First I connected the hardrive to both computers and installed it. Next I hooked it up to the airport extreme. Neither the MacBook Pro or the Macbook will recognize the hard drive unless it is directly hooked up to the computers themselves. Any ideas on how to be able to access the My Book hard drive wirelessly??

in airport utility, click on manual setup, click on disks, click on file sharing, on airport disks guests access choose read and write, click update. wait for base station to restart and then you should be good once you go to it under shared in the finder window (left side) and click connect as.. put in pword and there ya go.
at least this what worked for me. i just had this same problem a few minutes ago.

  • Airport extreme base station cant access external hard drive

Just bought the new Airport extreme base station and I cant access the external hard drive. Any suggestions would be great. Everything worked great on the 5th generation airport extreme. But wanted to have the new speeds. But seems not to be worth it if I cant access my external hard drive. Please Help
Thank you in advance for any help.

I saw it in the finder menu but when I clicked on it nothing would happen. Then I went to my airport utility to see if that the extreme saw it.  It was in the disk section. But I can't access it. Today it completely disappeared from the utility but my laptop is still online. This thing is crazy.

  • Why am I not able to open external hard drive (FreeAgent GoFlex Desk) window??

I am simply trying to open a Finder window of the external hard drive itself so that I may copy over my Iphoto Library to it.  However, I am unable to do so!  There is no window to open.  When I connect my Free Agent GoFlex Desk external hard drive, Time Machine automatically begins and I see this green icon and the words, "Time Machine Backups" under Devices in Finder.  That all works fine and as far as I know the backups works just great.  But I am unable to open the external drive in a Finder window!  In my research, I've found the simple recommendation to:  "In the Finder, the external drive will show as an orange drive icone in the left pane."  But I don't see that, I only see the green icon as mentioned above.  What is going on?  Why can't I see this drive and open a window??  Thank you in advance!

You already have. Disregard the icon's color and follow the rest of the instructions. Note that Time Machine will eventually use all the free space on the location it's backing up to, so you should create a separate partition for other data.

  • "Open with..." accesses external hard drive?

Whenever I right click on a file and choose "Open With" to choose the program that I want to open the file with, it spins up my external hard drive as if to look for the programs on it or something. This caauses quite a delay as it won't display the list of programs until the hard drive is at full speed. any ideas?

Have you unmounted the ext hd and rebooted? Does the mac start up normally? If you can save/copy what you have on the ext hd I would reformat & try.
What make is the ext hd & is it mac compatible?
As no other tekky answers have shown up it may be an AppleCare call...L

  • Can't access external hard drive

I've been using a LaCie external drive with my iBook G4 for a couple of years. Suddenly, the icon no longer shows up on my desktop even though it's still recognized by the System Profiler. I have not been able to access any files in the external HD. I tried trashing all my preferences and rebooting, but that didn't resolve the problem. I also tried switching the FireWire cable but same result. Any suggestions?

  • Trouble accessing external hard drive

I hope I am in the right forum, but here is my problem. We have a Maxtor Central Axis network storage server (external backup hard drive) that is mac compatible. I only have access to the drive under one of our mac user accounts. Both my wife and I use the computer under separate user accounts. We spoke with Maxtor support and they say it is a mac security issue. We connect to the Maxtor through our Belkin wireless router that is directly connected via an ethernet cable. I can connect to both my wife's and my accounts set up on the Maxtor, but only when the computer is running under her user account. I cannot access either user account on the Maxtor under my user account. However, when I try to "connect to the server" from the go menu, the IP address shows up, but it will not connect. This happens even when we disconnect from the server of my wife's user account. Help me please!!!
    Thanks,
    Mike

Does the drive show up if you open Disk Utiltiy and have it scan for devices?
Do you have other Firewire devices attached? Does the Firewire bus show up under System Profiler? If your eMachas ever suffered a power glitch, it's possible the Firewire bus is latched up and not responding. Reset the Firewire bus triple fuses by removing all peripherals other than the keyboard and mouse, then removing the power cord from the side of the eMac (to remove the trickle current drawn by modern electronics even when nominally off) and waiting 15+ minutes. Then reattach the power cord restart. Check Apple’s System Profiler and confirm that the Firewire bus is recognized. Reattach peripherals one at a time, checking System Profiler after each to confirm the addition is recognized.
Also, be aware those drives come out of the box formatted as NTFS for use on Windows PCs; while Mac OS X can read NTFS volumes, it can't write to them. To use the drive with both computers, you'd need to format as FAT32 (which can be tricky with Windows volumes over 2 GB), or format as Mac HFS+ / OS Extended and purchase MacDrive for use on the PC.
If you need to reformat the drive, I'd suggest partitioning it into Mac and Windows partitions as well as one or more shared data partitions, and make the Mac partition the first partition. You can then clone the eMac HD to the external using SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner, and have a bootable external HD for emergencies.
