No Longer Able to Successfully Backup Hyper-V Virtual Machines from Host Without Shutting Them Down First

Hi all,
Prior to the new year, I was able to backup my VMs (two of them) using Windows Server Backup on their host server (running Server 2012) without shutting them down, no problem.  Something has obviously changed, and this no longer works.
When I try to back up my VMs now, the process basically seems to timeout during the 'Creating Shadow Copy of Volumes' phase.  The error log file points to the 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' as the culprit (Status [5]; Unexpected Error), and the specific
message I receive from WSB is:  Component was skipped from volume shadow copy.  The writer experienced a transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error may not reoccur.
I've seen only a handful of useful articles online about this particular error, but nothing I've tried has worked for me yet, like:
- Making sure the integration services are installed and enabled
- Making sure Windows Server Backup is installed on both VMs
- Making sure there is enough disk space in the VM for the backup to complete
The most compelling piece of information is that this process worked just fine before the new year started and now I can't make it work at all unless I turn off my VMs and then run the backup.  It just seems like there's some small thing I'm missing
(a service needs to be updated or turned off or on, etc), but I can't seem to find that information anywhere...
Any help is appreciated.  Thanks...

Hi aalbert140110
you may want to try using our VssDiag freeware to inspect your Windows and Hyper-V logs:
http://backupchain.com/VssDiag.html
All you need to do is enter the date/time when the backup failed and it will collect whatever it finds
Hope this helps!

  • Cant create replica and Hyper V virtual machine management service slow shutting down

    Hi,
I cant create replica and Hyper V, I go through the process and all looks good it even starts to create the hard disk but it stops at 4096K and the wizard just keeps going.
The management console is also slow or wont load virtual machines - stuck on loading virtual machines
The Hyper V virtual machine management service slow shutting down over 30 minutes on re boot of Hyper V core 2012 R2
    Any ideas ?

    Hi Sir,
I assume that you have a standalone hyper-v server 2012R2 and you are using hyper-v manager to manage the hyper-v host .
Which system you are using to manage hyper-v host , win8 or win8.1 or other ?
Have you created VMs on the HOST ?
I would suggest  you to create vhd or someother operation on hyper-v host directly  to check the result .

  • Modify the headless options of the BIOS on a Hyper-V Virtual Machine

    Hi everyone,
I am attempting to do something which is (surprisingly) complex using a Hyper-V virtual machine.  Using VMware Workstation I have been able to boot from the network using VMware autodeploy.  This loads ESXi 5.5 as the operating system.  This
works great, but I would like to try to accomplish he same feat using Hyper-V, and I've succeeded.  This creates is a nested ESXi 5.5 host.
The process was long and painful, but I have gotten to the point that I am able to successfully boot a Hyper-V virtual machine off the network (legacy network card as the boot device) then load the OS.  The only problem is that in order to get it to
boot I need to hit shift + o during the ESXi boot startup, and enter the following line:
    ignoreHeadless=TRUE
The problem is that I can't do this manually every time.  To understand how to fix this, I first needed to understand what exactly "ignoreHeadless=TRUE" was doing.  My understanding is that this has to do with the display, specifically:
"Some systems which have a video display device can be configured to report themselves as headless via the configuration, usually in the system BIOS."
I believe this is my issue, by default a Windows Hyper-V virtual machine reports itself as headless, therefore you need to ignore this configuration on startup or ESXi thinks there is a display error.
My question is, can I fix this from the virtual machine side?  Can I modify the virtual machine so that it does NOT report itself as headless?

    Hi,
The Hyper-V is the full virtualization technology, and it must installed on bare-metal computer, personal experience, if you are using the WDS with Hyper-V environment to
deploy the Windows system, the performance will lower than the physical computer and you must choose the corresponding method if you have the different environment.

  • Error Creating VM on 2011 iMac - The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service encountered an unexpected error: The remote procedure call failed. (0x800706BE).

I am running Hyper-V in Windows 8.1 on a late 2011 27 inch iMac. Whenever I try to create a virtual machine I get the error below and Windows warns that it will restart in 1 minute. I tried a clean install of Windows, but my PC still crashes ever

  • Create Protection Group Hyper-V Virtual Machines Not Listed

    Hello,
We are in the process of testing DPM 2012 R2 and we are trying to backup our Hyper-V virtual machines on both cluster hosts and stand-alone Hyper-V hosts.  We have deployed the DPM agent to all cluster hosts and the stand-alone hosts, but when we go
to create a protection group, we do not see Hyper-V Virtual Machines listed under "HyperV".  We are expecting Virtual Machines to show up as shown in Step 7 of this guide: http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2013/11/07/dpm-2012-r2-quickstart-deployment-guide.aspx.
We have DPM 2012 R2 UR4 installed and Hyper-V role is enabled on the DPM server.
Is there something extra we need to do or something we are doing wrong?
    Thank you.

    Gleb,
Thank you for your help.  For our cluster, we realized we weren't seeing any VM's under the Cluster Node because an agent was not installed on our of the Hyper-V hosts in the cluster.  As for the stand-alone Hyper-V host and the cluster node listing
within the "Create New Protection Group" wizard, it looks like MOST of the VM's have the "Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot" option, but no longer show as "Online" or "Offline".  I believe this is due to the
way the Hyper-V backups are done w/ DPM which was changed either in R2 or one of the Update Rollups.

  • Hyper-v virtual machine management in status stopping

    Hello,
I had a problem with one vm showing status backing up.
I read on TechNet that restarting the hyper-v virtual machine management service would solve the problem.
I have tried to shutdown the service but it now says status stopping...
How long time does it take to shutdown the service? Is there anything I can do to hurry it up?
ps. I have production vm running on the host that I can't take down...
    Regards
    Roger

    Hi Roger,
I also tested in my lab to disable  that service forcibly ,then I found that it will leads the VMs to unexpected shutdown .
Based on this ,it seems that restarting the host is necessary .

  • How to connect USB external Harddisk to Hyper-v virtual machine

    Hi,
We are running hyper-v server 2008 R2, we have external USB harddisk connected in hyper-v Manager, we are not able connect this USB to virtual machine.. is this option is available in hyper-v? if no is there any document from microsoft stating the same?
    Regards
    Asha

    Hi,
Unfortunately, USB is not supported on a Hyper-V virtual machine. You can perform the following suggestions:
    1. Offline the USB hard disk on the Hyper-V host machine and connect it to the virtual machine as a pass-through disk(if the USB hard disk is support)
For more information, you can refer to:
    Configuring Pass-through Disks in Hyper-V
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2008/10/24/configuring-pass-through-disks-in-hyper-v.aspx
    2. You can also use some USB over Ethernet application.

  • Restored Hyper-V Virtual Machine Snapshots by error

    Hi Everyone,
We are facing a disaster !!, One of our team restored an old  Hyper-V Virtual Machine Snapshot by error which erased our recent databases. So i'am wondering is there a miracle to restore that data. Like we can flashback to 3 hour later.
    Help is very appreciated !!
    Yasser Emad

    Hi Yasser,
Unless a snapshot was taken just before reverting back to the old snapshot, or a backup exists, I'm afraid I don't believe there is.
Is this a checkpoint from failover cluster manager or SCVMM?
    Kind Regards

  • Windows 8 Hyper-V - Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine

I have Hyper-v running on Dell Precision T3600 with Windows 8 OS.  I am trying to start a VM (called Windows8VM) to install Windows 8 in the hyper-v virtual machine, but I keep getting the following message:

    Nick :(

Okay,  I turned off hyper-v, went to bios and enabled Intel TXT(LT-SX) Configuration.  Made sure that both Virtualization and VT for Direct I/0 are on.  Next, I turned on Hyper-V and I create a brand new Virtual Machine call Windows8 and had
the DVD point to Windows8 ISO file on hard drive.  When I clicked on start, it stayed in the Starting status mode for about 5 minutes.  Then of course it failed.  I looked at the Hyper-V-VMMS log and here is what it output:

  • Move Virtual Machine from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Hyper-V Server 2012 fails with Error 2901

I have six Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1 servers and two Hyper-V 2012 servers. I am running SCVMM 2012 SP1. I am trying to use "move virtual machine" from within SCVMM to move VMs from a 2008 host to a 2012 host. I have tried different VMs on different hosts
and they all fail with this error:
    ==========
    Error (2901)
The operation did not complete successfully because of a parameter or call sequence that is not valid.
    The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)
    Recommended Action
Ensure that the parameters are valid, and then try the operation again.
    ==========
I have successfully created a VM on one of the 2012 hosts and moved it to the other 2012 hosts.  I can move VMs from 2008 host to 2008 host.  I just cannot move VMs from 2008 host to 2012 host.
    Does SCVMM 2012 SP1 not support moving VMs from Hyper-V 2008 to Hyper-V 2012?

    Hello Kevin,
Have you got an resolution yet ? Do you have latest update roll up pack applied to SCVMM 2012 SP1?
With SCVMM 2012 SP1  " Running VMs (Live Migartion) and VMs which are in Saved state or having checkpoints can not be migrated from 2008R2 host to 2012 Host "
above was fixed in SCVMM 2012 Update Roll up 1
Apart this please check the approx. size of data (VHDs) which will get transferred over the network , If you have large files chances are more to get such errors.
    Thanks

  • How to attach a usb disk to a Hyper-V virtual machine

I am using Virtual Machine Connection with Server 2008 R2 and runing Win 7 on VM. I follow all steps and choose a Physical hard disk: and choose the disk i would to add n prob. But after that i cannot see him active in the VM Win 7. If i go back to Disk Management
in Server 2008 is standing there as offline (and i cannot put it online here says ACESS DENIED) so please give some tips how to fix this.
    Thanks in advance
    Joao

Reading the above responses, that's fine for a current RDP session, but what I want to do is to setup a few VM's and test/separate out various devices.
I wanted one VM that just did TV recordings for when I'm out, another that handled the security cameras I plan on installing, be they web cams or IP cameras.
Yet another VM that had the only connection to the printer/scanner that was connected to the cloud.
Realistically, I wanted to have various VM's that handled other devices as well as usb drives, but this seems to fail, just because I cannot add a device permanently.
This in some ways seems to be a security risk, the VM cannot get access to potential virus's on a usb device but the server can !!
The point of VM's for me is I can install all devices on separate VM's as required, back up these VM's frequently. If and only if the server dies and I loose the drive, I would only have to re-install the server and then attach back the VM's backup.
Maybe I'm missing the point of usb not being able to attach permanently?
    Thanks for any solution
    Mike
Use Tape Redirector a free product from my company. It does add iSCSI to any storage device (including USB) and you'd be able to use it over iSCSI from any physical or virtual machine from any place inside your network. See:

    Hope this helped :)

  • Backing Up Hyper-V Virtual Machines with dynamic vhdx disks attached

    Hi folks.
Can i  make an online backup
for a virtual machine that has a hard drive
    attached  dynamic vhdx running on
    windows server 2012 r2?
    Regards

I think we should try to duplicate this using diskshadow.exe to create a persistent snapshot and manually copy a VM.
    1) On the hyper-V host open an administrative command prompt.
    2) Run diskshadow.exe - and after it starts enter the following commands as written except for the drive letters used:
       Diskshadow> Set Verbose on
       Diskshadow> Set context Persistent
Diskshadow> Add Volume X: ALIAS xvol    (Where
X: is the drive letter of the volume containing the Hyper-V guests you want to make a snapshot for)
       Diskshadow> Begin backup
       Diskshadow> create
       Diskshadow>end backup
       DiskShadow> Expose %xvol% S:              (Where S: is a free drive letter)
    3) Now Go into explorer and copy out VM's from the S: Drive which is the live shadow copy and see if that duplicates your problem.
When you are done, delete the shadow copy in diskshadow using the following command.
       DiskShadow>Delete shadows exposed S:

  • Windows 10 Technical Preview - There is NO "Hyper-v Virtual Machine Management" service???

    hi all,
There's no such Windows Topic as "WTP Virtualization", so I post this thread here, a somewhat "VIRTULIZATION" related.
I installed WTP (not server) x64 enterprise 9879, and added "Hyper-v Management" feature (management only, without Hyper-v core) in Control Panel. Then I found that there was no "Hyper-v
Virtual Machine Management" in Services panel, and there was no such file "c:\windows\system32\vmms.exe". Therefore I cannot connect to Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-v through WTP Hyper-v Manager.
I confirm the reason is what I state above. Firewall rules are properly configured on both Hyper-v server and WTP. I also used hvxxxx.wsf to configre anondcom to be "allow". When
I connect WS 2012 R2 through WTP, Hyper-v manager on WTP says "Please confirm VMMS server is running".
Is it a bug, or lack of implementation, or restriction of preview edition?
    Any suggestion is appreciated! Thanks!
