No longer able to write to hard drive

I've got a 3TB 7200 SATA 6GB/S drive, running on Mac OS 10.8.5., that has worked quite nicely until yesterday. I tried saving a file I had been working on, and I got a dialog saying I did not have permission to save, something that has never happened before.  I tried several other files and the issue seems to be only with this one drive.
I checked the Get Info area, under "Sharing and Permissions, it said "You can only read," then underneath had my name and said under "Privilege"  Read & Write.  Unchecking the lock and trying to make changes had no effect.
Now, a day later, checking the Get Info area again, "Sharing and Permissions" says "You can read and write" again.  And I am able to save a file back to the drive.  The computer has been on continuously, was not shut down and restarted.
Any ideas of what might be happening?  Is this drive about to fail and should I be filing a claim to replace it (less than a year old)?

Have exactly the same problem using external drive and network attached storage as now none of the artwork shows up,  just the black square with the music note. I am convinced that the artwork is there as I updated my Sonos system which is directed to the NAS and all the artwork still shows up on Sonos.
Through 'finder' on the Mac I accessed the original music files stored on the Mac and have found over 100 missing cover artworks from about 4,000 tracks which were there before the itunes update.  When i click on one of with the black square and music note it automatically opens itunes and still shows the 'missing art'. It might be an idea to check your original music and see if all the artwork shows.

  • No longer able to access external hard drive

Since upgrading my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion I can no longer mount either of my NAS (iomega and buffalo) I've tried connecting via finder, connecting via IP address. Nothing works it just times out or shows connection failed.
I can connect fine on my old MacBook running Lion and was able to connect with my Pro before the upgrade.
Neither NAS has firmware updates available and the only change is the upgrade to Mountain Lion. Any suggestions how I connect to my back-up drives now?

OK, I tried that with a couple of music folders. So far so good.
Does this mean I have to select all my music files and add them to the new library file created on the external drive? I'm not sure how or when this problem began. I've had this external drive arrangement working for two years. I suspect it happened with the iTunes 7.5 upgrade but it wasn't noticed until today.
So do I go ahead and recreate the Library file by adding all the music folders into it? I realize I'm going to lose playlists, but that isn't a big deal.

  • My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive

    Hello,
I need you help with this one. My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive. In the System Profiler (under FireWire) the drive is listed as:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Connection Speed: Unknown
Can anyone help me to correct this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!
    Nat

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!
    Thanks,
    Nat

  • Wrt610n problem, can't seem to write to hard drive

so i set up the router and have set up all the shares along with the user properties with admin status. I have mapped the network drive on Vista and am able to see the hard drive and play everything off it. But i cant seem to write to it, everytime i try to it says i need permission. i know i have connected via admin status with my user name not the admin user name since i cant seem to with vista.
    suggestions? TIA

    Hello there!
With your concern, are you connecting a USB thumb drive or HDD to the router? What's the difference?
With USB Thumb Drive attached to your router, it only reads it as NTFS and you have Read-Only permission to this. That means, only opening files. With HDD or hard disk drive, make sure it is formatted to Fat/Fat32 for read-write permission. Also, make sure the user you created on the router's storage settings is set to read-write permission as well. Take note that before you proceed with reformatting your hard drive, you have to create a backup first.
So far, this are the options you have to check. Also, test if you can read-write once the hard drive is connected directly to the computer.
    Keep posted!
     for heads up! <<<call_me_jam_>>>

  • Laptop no longer can mount my external hard drive

After updating to Mavericks, my laptop no longer can mount my external hard drive. What on earth is going on here and how can I fix this?

The drive is spinning and I was using it the night before I updated my macbook. It is viewable in disk utility but not in finder, and attempts to mount it are thwarted. The problem is literally coincident with updating the mavericks. When I click verify it didn't appear to have any problems but I will retry when I am back at home and report the findings.
It is a Toshiba 1GB external hard drive and has adequate power. Lights are on, etc.
I have not checked on another computer as do not have one available, but that will be my next step.

  • My MacBook pro motherboard needs replacing (expensive!!), would I be able to remove the hard drive and have it put into my partners MacBook air?

My MacBook pro would not boot up, took to genius bar and tech tried everything to boot up, but no luck, he says it looks like main board has gone, It would cost £750!! He said if I wanted to purchase a new mac, they could transfer my hard drive to the new mac. My partner has a MacBook air, which they hardly use, so I was wondering if the techs would be able to transfer my hard drive from the pro to the MacBook air? Any advise would be appreciated

Not the Hard Drive itself! In the MacBook (Pro) you have 2.5" hard drives, and in the MacBook Air there are 1.8" (the older once) or special form factors SSDs (MacBook Air 2011). So the hard drive quite bigger in your MBP.
But the data could be transferred to the MacBook Air with an external enclosure, if the hard drive in the MacBook Air is big enough.

Doesn't sound like any hard drive failure to me - more a Finder preference.
Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> Hard disks
The startup disk is sometimes treated differently from other disks (such as external and network disks) and I'm guessing this is a simple preference setting, although I might be wrong.

What you can do is to extract the hard drive from your old computer, put it in an enclosure and connect it to your newer computer, so you can restore your data.
It's not too difficult to do it yourself, but if you think you will do something wrong, take it to a store where you can get your data restored

  • G4 PowerMac no longer boots from External FireWire Hard Drive

What would cause a G4 PM to no longer boot from an Ext. FW HD that was working fine yesterday and in fact still mounts fine on the desktop..... but when I go into system pref's and attempt to select the ext. HD (and it does show up as an option to boot from since it has an OS in Mac OS Extended Format, Journaled) but after selecting said drive the system simply defaults to the main HD instead and not the external HD I selected within system pref's.???
(I've run apple's disc utilities / First Aid ..... it simply says no repairs were necessary).
The HD in question is a Maxtor 120GB 7200 ATA133 in the following ADS enclosure:
Same enclosure works fine with a pionner 110D S-Drive.
Any Suggestions (short of installing the Maxtor hard drive internally which I may have to try anyway)?

  • Computer no longer recognizes mount point of hard drive

    Hello all,
I have a perplexing problem here. When I was running a Verify Disk in Disk Utilities I got a "Keys Out of Order" error, and I cannot repair with either Disk Utility or using fsck.
I ran a Hardware Test and nothing was wrong, so I decided to back everything up, wipe the drive, and re-install the OS. Problem is, DIsk Utility will not let me wipe my hard drive. The mount point shows up as just "/" instead of, for example, /Volumes/My Awesome Computer. I assume this is a symptom of my "Keys out of order" error, since I can see my boot camp partition just fine and can choose to erase it if I want to.
I guess my question is, how can I wipe my Apple partition if the option is not even available to me to begin with? I tried booting up from my installation disks and doing an Archive and Install from there already, but my disks don't even recognize my Apple partition, so I can't even begin to re-install the OS from them.
My only remaining idea is to re-partition my hard drive into another Apple partition, install there, and then unpartition, but I'm not sure if that'll work. Does anyone have any clues or advice?

Update: I tried re-partitioning my drive, but that failed to initiate. I got this error: filesystem verify or repair failed.
It's the same error that I get when I tried to repair my HD with Disk Utility. So, I cannot make new partitions, and my hard drive mount point remains unrecognized by my install CDs. Yet...I can log in and use it just fine. The only manifested problem I've had with this Keys Out of Order error is that I can no longer see my Apple partition from Boot Camp, but I'm worried this problem may get just worse and worse. Help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Laptop no longer recognizing songs in external hard drive.  Only ones in internal hd.  Says file cannot be found and exclamation pt. to left of song.

My laptop no longer recognizes my songs in the external hard drive.  It still plays the ones stored on my internal hd fine.  It's just started doing this.
The song's names still appear in the music library, but when I try to play the song, anexclamation pt. comes up to the left of the title, and it says the file cannot be located.
OS is Windows 7 Home Premium
    Thanks.

Thank you Tal, sounds like a nice resolution of the username difference problem, i will try this as soon as i get home, but are you sure this will not duplicate all the exhisting songs in my library? Most of my songs were renamed/rated and have a "number of times played" number, which does matter in most of my smart-playlists...
    Thank you in advance.
When I tried my suggestion, I had around 3 three separate folders on my computer which had music in them. The music in these folders was dragged and dropped into iTunes when I was adding it onto my iPhone.
I had foolishly moved some of the music from the other folders and into the music/iTunes folder iTunes then showed the exclamation mark beside these tracks and showed the not found or words to that affect window/popup. I then placed the folders (that contain the music) back to their location which there were at when I originally dragged and dropped them into iTunes, after this the exclamation mark and the not found window naturally did not appear anymore.
    I then done the following:
    iTunes 9:
Choose File > Library > Organize Library.
    A message will pop up.
Place a check next to "Consolidate files" and click OK.
After I had done this, all the folders that contained the music that were in the 3 separate folders, were then placed in one folder, which in my case was,
    C:\Users\MY USERNAME\Music\iTunes\My iPhone\iTunes Media\Music
Sometimes (depending on the device) it can be (your username)/music/iTunes/iTunes music

  • Encoding on terminal to read/write ntfs hard drive help!

I encoded in Terminal the codes that were posted online regarding the enabling of read/write for ntfs hard drive but something went wrong during the process. Would it be possible to undo it? Would there be any code to disable it so I could at least read it? It won't even read my hard drive anymore. I think I have accidentally delete the Volumes part where it was supposed to appear.

Difficult to say without knowing what you did more precisely. Use the terminal history command as follows:
         history > ~/Desktop/MyNightmare.txt
to save what you got up to in a file on your desktop. Copy and paste the lines that will show us what you did. Check for, and redact as necessary, any personal information such as user names, passwords, etc. before posting.
Also, I assume that you tried to edit your /etc/fstab file so please post the results of these terminal commands
         ls -la /etc/fstab
         cat /etc/fstab
    too.

  • Installed Leopard and can no longer connect to my shared hard drive

I had a sweet set up with a Drobo (fancy external hard drive) connected to my Airport Extreme base station. Before I upgraded to Leopard, my MacBook Pro would discover the Drobo disk and run scheduled backups without me having to do anything.
Since I installed Leopard, I can see the Drobo disk in the Finder under SHARED > Airport but I cannot access it. It won't accept my password to connect to it. What's really weird/dumb is that I can use Airport Utility to reset the password and change whatever settings I like... but when it comes to actually using the disk, I'm locked out.
    Anyone know what's going on?

    Podcast Update:
Jason O’Grady on today’s PowerPage podcast said that in the beta builds of leopard time machine supported airport extreme’s airport disk feature. They only dropped it in the release version of leopard. He’s confident this functionality will return.
But on today’s MacBreak Weekly podcast, Leo Laporte said as much as he loves his drobo it’s LOUD when it’s working. I wonder if one of his drives is failing. He also said he prefers a backup program called ChronoSync. I’ve never used it.
