No longer backing up to Time Capsule

My TC is no longer backing up my iMac. When I open System Preferences the Time Machine is on and has the following data:
Available 30.7 MB of 463.8 GB
Oldest Backup: March 28,2008
Latest Backup March 23, 2009
The back up bar has been spinning for days.
I thought Time Machine would dump older backups and continue to backup current data. How do I get my TM to continue backing up?
Please explain in simple terms. I am a home user and not familiar with a lot of technical vocabulary.
Thanks you

Is there a way I can erase what is store in Time Machine and start over?
Yes. To erase the TC HDD, open AirPort Utility. Under Disks, select Erase. All contents of the TC HDD will be lost. If you are using the TC HDD for other file storage, move them elsewhere.

  • Time machine is no longer backing up to time capsule

Time Machine has stopped backing up to my time capsule. I think that it started sometime around when I upgraded to Mavericks. Whenever I try to backup my computer is says backup failed. I am still able to access all of my data including backups, pictures, videos etc through finder so the only issue seems to be time machine. I am also having the same problems with my macbook air which is running Mountain Lion.
I have tried reselecting the time capsule and even restored it to factory settings and set it up from scratch but I am still having the same issues.
Could someone please help. I am not sure what else to try.

    Are you using wireless?
Can you take a screenshot of the actual error message and post it..
Have you tried some of the pondini solutions.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
A1 load the widget so you get actual data on errors from the TM log.
A4 do a reset of TM
I would not be surprised that Mavericks has made it go bad.
Have you used SMB compatible names, ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric? Use that for everything, ie TC name and wireless name/s
What Mac is this.. and what model TC??

  • Mac no longer backing up to Time Capsule after upgrading to Lion

Apologies if this has been asked before but everyone else seems to be having a different problem with their backups in Lion!
Since upgrading to Lion on launch day, I've not run a successful backup to my Time Capsule. I keep getting a "problem connecting to server" error:
This, despite the fact that I can connect to the time Capsule using Finder. I've tried restarting the Time Capsule (both a software restart and a hard restart) but to no avail, and I've also rebooted my MacBook Pro numerous times.
My wife's MacBook, which is also running Lion, has successfully completed wireless backups to the same Time Capsule, as has our Mac mini (also on Lion) which is hard-wired into the TC.
Any ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

The preferences file may be damaged/corrupted.  Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Backing up a time capsules to a remote device across internet?

    Hi
has anyone any experience of backing up the time capsule (backup and NAS) over the Internet to a remote device (either a machine, NAS or another time capsule)?
I'm trying to do a home (cheap) version of colocating the time capsule (primary location my place, secondary location/back up location my parents).
Just wondering if there is any advice since most discussions seem to centre around the archive feature via the USB port which does not help since I need to remember to take it off site!
    Any suggestions would be great
    Thanks

The only thing I've done with a Time Capsule over the Internet is to copy individual files.  It takes a long time.  I'd expect an attempt to copy a lot more would take an unacceptably long time.

  • Wirelessly backing up without Time Capsule?

I read that it's possible to wirelessly back up without Time Capsule as long as the external drive is connected to another Mac. Can anyone  help please?

    1. You can do what you are now doing. You could transfer files via your home network using File Sharing.
    2. Partitioning is done using Disk Utility. See:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
    4. This can be done as you are now doing it. You can share the backup drive from the desktop computer if you have a home network. Select the drive. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Check the box labeled "Shared." Now open Sharing preferences and check the box, "File Sharing." If the shared drive is not in the list then use the Add [+] button and add the drive to the list. On the other computer you should see your desktop now listed in the Finder's sidebar under Servers. Click on the desktop name then click on the Connect As link in the upper right. Log in as a registered user using your admin account on the desktop and enter your admin password on the desktop account. You should now see an array of folders you can access including the shared drive. Double-click on it and it will mount on the Desktop. You can now use it like any other drive. For more help with this process select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "sharing."
Now, you can use a lot of different software for doing backups, syncs, etc. Here are a few:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
All of the above can use a networked drive as a source or destination for backing up or syncing files.

  • Time machine back up on time capsule never stop

time machine back up on time capsule never stop.

You need to do a bit of troubleshooting.. and it isn't an easy one to solve.
TM could be stuck on a corrupted file..
It could be slow due to network issues.. wireless is terrible.. use ethernet if at all possible.
    Is there an error message??
    Look at Pondini.. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You need to load the widget A1.
Verify both the source and backup sparsebundle. A5
Look at some of the reasons he gives for over long backups.
    Look at section D.
I would also need to have more info. Did this just start when you upgraded the TC firmware that was recently released.. if so expect issues.
Are you running Mountain Lion.. expect issues??
To help further we need more info.

  • Time machine has stopped backing up to time capsule. message is that sparse bundle is in use

Time machine suddenly stopped backing up to time capsule returning this message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/xxnymacbooknamexx MacBook.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Complex procedure that will almost always solve this bug:
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

  • When back up to time capsule I get the message no access to backupcopyfiledisc/Volume/data/imac.sparsebundle ( error - 1 )

When back up to time capsule I get the message no access to backupcopyfiledisc/Volume/Data/Terjesumac.sparsebundle ( error-1)

Try #C17 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for known fixes. Works for me as well.

  • Time Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.

TIme Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.  Time Machine shows a message such as "Backing up 4MB of 9.00GB" but nothing happens for hours.

Are you really running 10.6.4 OS?
What model TC and what firmware?
    Wireless or wired?
    How is the TC setup?
If TM can work to neither a TC or external hard disk it is more likely the computer is faulty hard disk..
Do a verify of the disk.
    See A5 here.

  • My 'old' files have been backed up onto time capsule (Leopard), I have upgraded to Lion (thro snow leopard) and now checking back to retosre some old files i can't see or access beyond the date I upgraded to Lion? Help please?

My 'old' files have been backed up onto time capsule (Leopard), I have upgraded to Lion (thro snow leopard) and now checking back to retosre some old files i can't see or access beyond the date I upgraded to Lion? Help please?

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17

  • How can I back up my time capsule contents to a different hard drive?

I want to back up my time capsule to a different hard drive so I have that extra layer of safety

There are a few ways to do this but none good.
Airport utility will do an archive of the disk.. just open to the disk tab and click archive. The target is USB drive connected to the machine. But it can only do full backup.. no incremental.
You can backup over network but not using Time Machine.. Carbon Copy Cloner is a $40 software that is well worth it. Super slow though doing this.
I recommend you backup using CCC direct from the computer to the target.. otherwise you can be backing up the same problem.

  • Can't back up to Time Capsule

Trying to backup my computer but getting this message "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Lisa Liberman's Time Capsul/Stuart Liberman’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."  It is not currently backing up my other computers.  How do I fix it?

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a full minute
Plug the power cord back in to the back of the Time Capsule
This simple reset will solve the problem about 95% of the time. Expect it to occur again, so you will know what to do next time.
If the simple "fix" does not work, there is more information about this issue here:
