No longer plays AVI files

Since the update QT no longer plays my AVI files. The app hangs up and has to be force quit. It also winds up my computer like a jet plane, which even Photoshop does not do. I already paid for the patch to play my mpeg2 files, what do I need to do to get my AVI files back?

What are the codecs for the files that aren't playing properly?
(open the movie in quicktime - press Command + I to get the "movie inspector" window - there should be a section called "format" with details of the compression codec used and the pixel sizes and stuff.
I have noticed the latest version of quicktime (7.4.1) has lost some of its backwards compatability - i have a load of old tutorial videos that were AVIs using the msvideo1 CRAM codec - they opened fine in quicktime under Tiger (still do in fact on our Tiger machine) - but now on Leopard quicktime can no longer decode the video so you get a big white screen.
Yet another reason to avoid Leopard? - there are so many things that USED to work fine and no longer do...... smb access, quicktime, exchange access via safari.......
Sad really - as I said in posts elsewhere - can it be long before we no longer have "software updates" and switch to be truly microsoft and call them "service packs"!
Robert
P.S. In the end i managed to get my video working by using ffmpeg (great app if you have a little knowledge of what you're doing to re-encode the video - nothing else I could find anywhere would play it!)

  • Please help! Playing .avi files in QT Pro

I have installed Perian, been to the Apple Store, and searched high and low for the answer, but cannot figure out how to play .avi files in QuickTime Pro. It's only some .avi files (not all), I can hear the background noise, but the screen is black. Please tell me how to remedy this.
    Thank you,
    Thom

'avi is simply a container that can contain any number of different video codecs. Most, but not all, can be played on a Mac.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.2.1 and 4, QT 7.4.x, 7.5.x and 7.6 and OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.6.
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
Note that Adobe requires you to uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, as mentioned here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1
using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.

  • How can i make quicktime play avi. files?

pls..how can i make quicktime play avi. files? because i have some avi files on my ipod or data cd but i can't play them on my laptop. pls help me..
and also, im trying to make a music video but i dont how to select different clips from a movie.

    Hello,
You can get from Microsoft, the flip4mac free player. Since Windows Media Player for Mac is no longer supported, this is the way to go.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
In my opinion, it is by far the best solution for playing .avi or .wmv files, because you get all the advantages of Quicktime.

  • In Lion, Safari 5.1 no longer plays .m3u files

In Lion, Safari 5.1 no longer plays .m3u files - it just downloads them, and dragging the file back into the browser doesn't do anything. This functionality used to work in 10.6 - the .m3u file would play directly in the browser. The .m3u files still do play directly in Firefox 5, so it doesn't seem to be an issue with the Quicktime plugin, as both browsers should be using the same one.

I just experienced this (trying to listen to audio previews at Amazon.com). If you are running the Click2Flash extension, set it to allow Flash on the domain. That allowed previews to play in Safari for me instead of downloading .m3u's.

  • WMV3Server plays avi files containing WMV3/9 video and MP3 audio

    WMV3Server
To play avi files with WMV3/9 video and MP3 audio encoding on Mac OS X as of 2005-01-24 you will need:
Mac OS X 10.2 or later
    WMV3Server
Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X
An .avi file containing WMV3 video and MP3 audio.
    Instructions:
Launch the WMV3Server java application and click the "Open" button.
A standard open-dialog window appears. Either navigate to the avi video file or drag the file into the open window to have the window switch to the folder that contains the avi video file. Select the file and click the "Open" button or press return on the keyboard. The open-dialog window should close.
Next, click the "Start" button. The movie will be cached and WMV3Server will display "Server Started"
Open Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X. Pull down the "File" menu on the menu bar at the top of the screen and select "Open URL..." Enter the following address:
    mmst://localhost:1755/
Windows Media Player should connect, buffer and play.
The download page (in Japanese) for WMV3Server is here:
    http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Bay/8128/
    The download link is:
    http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Bay/8128/WMV3Server-0.4.zip

Update: By playing around with the settings in the Default Applications preference pane (a free download) I somehow got the files to open automatically in QuickTime Player (with Flip4Mac WMV 2.0.1 installed) and they now play (instead of showing white video as they had previously. Unfortunately, I don't recall what I changed.

So true. I insall Perian, Flip4Mac (because they work so well with Quicktime) and always have MPEG Streamclip on hand and anything I can't play now, well I really don't worry about. Have never tried MPlayerX but looks like it may be worth a punt.

  • My quicktime can't play avi file

HI everyone does someone know why my latest quicktime can't play avi file?

Let me tell you what are you doing wrong...
you just followed the wrong road try this one instead and you will love it.
*1st of all*: Dont pay attention to QuickTime, no matter what movie you want to view
just download and install VLC Media Player and your worries about formats, video codecs, audio codecs, multi zone dvd reproduction will be over in a sec!
just "open as" > VLC Media Player and you will see everything and if you have a subtitle file, just drag it into the movie

  • HT2305 just downloaded quicktime player, tried to play avi file and all I had was a black screen. HELP!

I'm just after attempting to play an avi file with Quicktime player on windows7 and all I got was a blank screen. Is there any particular reason that this is happening, or is quicktime incapable of playing avi files without going pro?

The QuickTime Player doesn't have the right codec for that specific AVI. Purchasing QuickTime Pro will make no difference; it doesn't contain any additional codecs.

  • How do I get quicktime 10 to play avi files

Bought a macbook pro a few months back, and it doesn't seem to play avi files. How can I fix this.

Install Perian. If that doesn't work, you probably can't play those specific AVIs on a Mac.
Neither the QuickTime Player nor MPEG Streamclip can convert a file that it can't play.

  • My mac wont play .avi files

My macbook stopped playing .avi files that I download from the internet a few months ago.  I assumed they were just broken links, but now its past coincidence.  I have perian, and had DivX.  I removed DivX (heard the 2 clash) but still nothing works.
I thought I would get rid of Perian and try divX, but when I "removed perian" it just said "removed" and didnt actually uninstall.
I also have a bunch of other stuff that I don't use (to my knowledge), wondered if any of it was important:
    Flip4Mac
    Growl
    MacFUSE

If the AVI files are "links" that feed off streaming content, it's possible they have all been removed on the respective streaming severs by the original source, depending on their age.
With that said, Flip4Mac is the Microsoft supported plugin to allow playback of Windows Media Content inside QuickTime. You can check your version & update if needed here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media-player/wmcompo nents
It's also possible they may be Divx encoded files. Requiring the Divx decoder plugin:
    http://divx.com
Growl & MacFUSE are generally not related to Media Files. ( Google their names )
Also, Give VLC player a try. There isn't much of anything it won't play ( actually, try this first. ):

  • Playing AVI files on iPhone 3GS .. ??

Heya guys .. maybe a silly question but i hope you can help.
I have a bunch of AVI movie files on my imac and want to be able to play them in my iphone. In the imac i use VLC player to play back the files. Is there an ap for iphone that will allow it to play AVI files .. as they are at the moment, itunes wont even import them into the library.
    Cheers
    Darren

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert the AVI to MPEG-4 and import that into iTunes. An AVI can contain audio and video of any format, and some formats can't be played or converted in Mac OS X.
