[no longer relevant] Selfhosted Dropbox alternative

I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, but I haven't been able to find it.
In any case, I'm really tired of DropBox, not least due to it's limitations in regards to storage. Of course you can just pay up, but I find it way too expensive for a product that really isn't that great, especially on a Linux platform.
Further it so happens that I have my own VPS, that is of course not my own as in that I own it, but as in I control it.
So the solution it obvious, but I haven't been able to find much on the subject.
In any case I would very much like to hear your recommendations, especially if you know of a solution that don't require me to set up a webserver first, as I find  the two subject unrelated.
Best regards.

Thanks for the reply.
I've changed the thread title to better explain the issue.
The links so far did offer one interesting option, unison, though a few issues was pointed out, the thread was also a couple of years old, so I'll investigate further and hope it is useful.
I would however like to point out that I'm not interested in a fancy GUI or anything like that. I simply want a folder on my computer(s) that is automatically and on the fly synced with the server.

unison is basically bidirectional rsync.
@zacariaz
I recommend unison. It may not work on the fly, but you don't really need it to in a single-user setup. Configure a script to run it when you log in and then again when you log out. Use the VPS as your central repo and sync everything with that via ssh. If you only work on one system at a time and sync at the beginning and end of each session then you can fully automate conflict resolution. See e.g. "-prefer newer".
The only thing that it doesn't handle are hardlinks. Hardlinks on one system will be created as separate files on another. If the target directory is on a single device then you can recreate the hardlinks with some scripting and "hardlink" (provided by the "hardlink" package in [community]). My current method is to use "find" to determine existing hardlinks on both systems (via ssh on the remote system), then pass the list to a script after the sync to link the target files on both systems (again, using ssh to run the command on the remote system).
The trouble with unison is first of all that you need to use the same version across all clients, which quite frankly is too much of a bother.
Furthermore I use multiple systems at the same time quite often, so that is also a problem.
The rsync solution is interesting as it's highly configurable, however I fear that it's too complicated for me.
The thing is that I have clients that have an excess of storage and some that don't. Those that do can just do a complete sync, but in other cases another solution may be preferably.
Well, guess I'll have to think about it.
Thanks for now and best regards.

  • (SOLVED) Dropbox alternative

I would like to know if Arch has an alternative to dropbox that I can load up using pacman.
    Thanks

I noticed that you said you want an alternative to dropbox that you can "load up using pacman" - is that because you think dropbox doesn't exist for Arch? It is actually in the AUR at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?O … _Search=Go and needs to be built first.
Assuming you havent been using Arch very long (this is your first post I note) there is pacman which is, I guess, the main installer for Arch. In addition to this there is the AUR located at http://aur.archlinux.org/ which holds numerous packages for all sorts of things. On top of all this there are also numerous helpers, documented at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_Helpers#packer which assist in building the packages from the AUR - sorting out the dependencies etc. for you and so on. Personally I user packer, which is almost the same as using pacman in a way except it builds the package for you.
Packer has to be built first but it isn't too difficult to do, and the same process applies to pretty much any package. The entire process is documented elsewhere, as is pretty much everything about Arch, but a very simple outline of how to build packer is like this:
    1) Download the Tarball, there is a link on the page labelled Tarball, for packer from here http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33378
    2) Save the file somewhere convenient and extract the file which creates a new folder called "packer".
    3) From the command line change directory into the new packer folder.
    4) type "makepkg" without the quotes and the system builds an installer for you. Assuming that it went through with no errors you can now install packer...
    5) if you look at the files in the folder you now have one which looks like "packer-20111216-1-any.pkg.tar.xz" - it may not be exactly the same but the important bit is that it has ".pkg.tar.xz" at the end.
    6) Assuming you use sudo type in the following, changing the filename for yours of course:
    sudo pacman -U packer-20111216-1-any.pkg.tar.xz
If you don't use sudo then it's slightly different:
    su
    sudo pacman -U packer-20111216-1-any.pkg.tar.xz
The system may prompt for various things: say Yes to install and No to the prompts that ask something like "do you want to edit .....". Hopefully packer will now install with no errors. You can then use it to install most things in the AUR in the same way as with pacman for example:
    sudo packer -S dropbox thunar-dropbox nautilus-dropbox
Would install dropbox along with the thunar and nautilus dropbox extensions. Some packages from the AUR will require other dependencies to be installed first, which can be built individually, but packer handles this for you as do other helpers of course.
Hope this helps and you don't think I am taking you for a fool by explaining it too simply. The best way of learning Arch is, as most people on here will tell you, to read the documentation, but it can be bewildering at first to get the system up and running.

  • Feedburner no longer supported by Tumblr, alternatives?

I have a podcast at http://okay-saturday.tumblr.com and was using feedburner to get my podcast up onto iTunes. Yesterday I got an e-mail saying Tumblr no longer supported syndication through feedburner, so I quickly tried to look for an alternative. I found feedpress and redirected my feed to that, and only realized after I set everything up that they don't automatically add enclosure tags like feedburner did (at least I don't think so, anyway), so my podcast no longer has episodes on iTunes. This is the feed now (and on top of that it's only showing 10 posts at a time) http://feedpress.me/OkaySaturday
I really don't care about statistics or anything. Most people seem to actually download our podcast through Tumblr and not even on iTunes, I just want the podcast to be available on iTunes as an option for those who like to listen to it that way. As I'm pretty sure Tumblr doesn't allow you to edit the XML of your blog so I can't add the enclosure tags myself, is there any other RSS feed service that does this? Thanks!

Since my last message I was able to restore everything to my feedburner feed...which DOES still work with Tumblr. Now I'm kind of confused about what Tumblr meant in that e-mail to me. Here's the e-mail they sent:
    Feedburn notice
Just writing to let you know that we no longer support syndication through Feedburner. Regular old RSS still works just fine, though.
Want to update your RSS feed preferences? Go to settings
I find the whole thing very strange because I also don't understand how Tumblr could not work with feedburner anymore either. There's a feedburner option in settings, maybe that's what they mean. All you do is type your feedburner URL in the box and it does everthing else for you. Maybe it just means this option will be gone soon and you'll manually have to direct your Tumblr feed to feedburner in the html of the blog (or maybe I'm just confused and don't fully understand how RSS feeds work).
Ether way everthing is still there, and it seems crazy to me too but Tumblr really doesn't have an option anywhere for enclosure tags. Thanks for your response though, if somehow feedurner does stop working with Tumblr I'll try moving to blogger instead!

  • Dropbox Alternative [SOLVED]

I am sure you know or at least have heard of dropbox. I am essentially limited by the limited size I get on server (for free). So its not exactly an alternative that I am looking for. But here is what I want to do:
    1. Set up a ftp / file server on my archbox.
    2. Be able to access the shared files and download/upload stuff from anywhere using maybe a web browser (also OS independent access).
What are my best options for this and what exactly should I be looking at/for.
    Thanks.

Not only do I have all my backups in one place, accessible from anywhere, but I also have a nice timeline of backups as well. Of course, these files are only 200-300k each, so size really isn't an issue for me, but 8GB is quite a bit.
I use a script w/ mailx-heirloom to e-mail my backups to my Gmail account and I use the Gmail filters and labels to automatically put all the backups in one place.
It's great for small text files, but no so good for multimedia. IIRC Google Docs allow you to upload bigger files, but they offer less space on the server.

  • I can no longer save from Dropbox to my iPhone's camera roll

In the past, I have uploaded video files from my PC into Dropbox, downloaded them from Dropbox onto my iPhone, then saved them to my iPhone camera roll.
I am now trying to do this for the first time since I upgraded the iPhone to iOS 7.1. It is not working. I've uploaded several large files to Dropbox, and downloaded them to the iPhone. The downloads are completed and in the Dropbox app on the phone. I go to each file and mark it as a favorite (star). I then go into favorites, choose one of these files, and press the icon (a curving arrow pointing down into a box-like shape) that should enable me to save to the camera roll. But instead of being given that option, two things pop up: some text about using AirDrop ("Share instantly with people nearby. If they do not appear automatically...") and also an icon of another app I have installed on the iPhone, called "Xfinity Connect" (an e-mail client app from my ISP, Xfinity) accompanied by the text, "Open in Connect".
The "Save to camera roll" option is absent.
The only other option given is "Cancel".
I did try clicking the "Open in Connect" option - all that does is launch an e-mail message in that Xfinity app with the file I'm trying to save as an attachment.
Any idea how to get DropBox to work as it did before the iOS 7.1 upgrade, and give me the option of saving video files to my camera roll?
If it makes any difference, these are large files, in the hundreds of megabytes. They are in AVCHD format.

Thanks for the judgmental response, Dave. My favorite part was where you told me how to manage the space on my computer. My second favorite part was when you accused me to stealing music.
I have only synced my iPhone with one computer and its iTunes library. I download music legally to that computer, from mixtape sites, Bandcamp, Amazon and---GASP---other none iTunes sites, load it onto my iPhone, then delete some of it, because I don't listen to music on my computer. I listen to it on a device I purchased to play it. That device is called an iPhone. It's supposed to play mp3s.
    Have I blown your mind?
But if I am hearing you right, you are telling me the iPhone is literally the only mp3 player in existence that doesn't and shouldn't have the basic functionality to have new mp3s loaded to it from a single authorized computer. That I should be happy now that I cannot load new music onto it, and I should just live with the music that I have already loaded, since I can't load anymore.
And that I should be happy that this basic functionality that, until the most recent software update, I have always had has magically disappeared.
How foolish it was of me to be upset about this! Thank you for showing me the light, Dave.

  • Bug report - classic report lov defn retained when no longer relevant

    Hi,
In January I spotted a case where, attributes were retained after a selection was changed, and related fields are hidden in the dev environment.
    http://www.grassroots-oracle.com/2013/01/dynamic-action-hidden-false-actions.html
Anthony Rayner asked me on twitter for other examples and I just found one.
Classic report - column display as "Select list (query based lov)"
    Add LOV sql.
Change back to "Standard report column" or "display as text...", save.
Change to "select list..." -> lov definition re-appears.
I actually founds this after setting the column to standard report column, then copying the page - the LOV was present in the new page!

Thanks for following up on this. I have filed bug #16482841 for this, which will be looked in the next major release.

  • Why did they remove the code validator in DWCS5??!!!

I just noticed that some had to create an extension to reinstall the page validator for CS5. Why on earth did they remove this feature???

Adobe is always reviewing Dreamweaver to identify underpowered or little used features which are no longer relevant, or better alternatives exist, in today's market.
Occasionally their research and conclusions seem to be off course with the majority of users. Radical action, such as dropping the feature, may taken too early.
They made a call by dropping the in-built DW validator in CS5 but, apparently, it's still wanted. I never use it personally but plenty still do apparently. It may yet find itself living on borrowed time though.
The antiquated Timelines feature in earlier versions was another example of a feature which was pulled prematurely (back in MM days) and quickly reinstated via a patch following a concerted user campaign. It was eventually dropped in later versions when the time was right.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice. In fact, Dropbox is no longer in the list of apps in settings? This is odd.. Could Apple have restricted this app?
    Thanks!

The App is not restricted. It works fine for me on iOS 6.1.3.
Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

  • Alternative reconciliation account

    Hi,
we have a following requirement from the client:
The business process is the following:
approx.10.000 Retail beer customers in dist. channel X and Y. We would like to invoice a so-called rent fee with sundry invoicing for the equipments they use. (In the future we will create other kind of sundry invoices for them too.) Depending on the category of the equipment we will invoice 3 different amounts per equipment.
These customers will issue towards us an invoice with the same amount as a marketing contribution.
Incoming and outgoing invoices have to be settled against each other. This is not a onetime action. We must repeat this process year by year.
    Business process:
    1.     Outgoing invoices have to be created for customers about the annual rent fee
    2.             Mass creation of sales orders and invoices using LSMW.
    3.     Customer issues an incoming invoice in the same value about marketing cost contribution ( with LSMW for FB01 transaction ).
    4.     Outgoing and incoming invoices have to be settled (zero settlement)
    4.     If customer doesnu2019t issues invoice, he has to be dunned
    My questions are:
    1) our client has asked to Make settings for u201CPosting with alternative reconciliation accountu201D: allow for G/L account ABC to post with alternative reconciliation account Nr. DEF.
we can not change the recon. account to alternative recon. account here, when the customer invoices are get created from VF01, so what is the purpose of alternative recon. account here ?
    2) How to carry out Automatic Zero settlement of incoming and outgoing invoices using automatic payment program?
    Thanks,
    Vidya

    Answer 1
    =======
During document entry, you use the reconciliation account to define the G\L account in which the transaction figures are to be updated. You determine which G\L account is to be used using:
    The special G\L indicator or
The reconciliation account which is defined in the master record (default) and, if relevant, any additional alternative reconciliation accounts which you can define per reconciliation account in Customizing
Define accordingly for customers and vendors
    Answer 2
    =======
The is no automatic scheduling of Payment Run in F110
However, you can schedule the proposals in F110S. Make you use of this.
Create a variant and schedule them in background.

  • You can't open the application "TeacherWorks" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

When I try to open an application I get this message: You can’t open the application “TeacherWorks” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. I updated my MacBook Pro to Mavericks a month ago. So I do not know what is going on. I am not good with computeres, so please if you will try to help me, please be very simple.
    Thank you

There isn't really a simple answer to your dilemma.
You have discovered that there is older software that will no longer work on OS X Mavericks.
Your version of TeacherWorks was programmed to run on much older non-Intel, PowerPC style Macs that were discontinued around 2005-2006.
If your Mac was running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard previously, Snow Leopard had a special emulator software, called Rosetta,  that emulated older PowerPC hardware to allow this software to function.
This Rosetta emulator software got deleted/obsoleted from OS X with the introduction of OS X 10.7 Lion.
So, this software will no longer function.
The alternatives is to see if there are newer updates of this software that needs to be downloaded and installed.
OR if this software no longer exists or is no longer being updated, then you need to search for and seek out alternatives that are similar in features to this software.
There is a way to get your existing TeacherWorks software to work on Mavericks, but it gets involves using a special virtualization software like Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion or the free, open source virtualization software called virtual box to install OS X Snow. Leopard Server within the virtualization software.
You purchase, download and install this virtualization software.
And you need to call Apple at 1-800-MYAPPLE to see if you can still purchase copies of OS X Snow Leopard Server.
Once you have OS X Snow Leopard Server installed and you launch it, you can, once more, install your existing TeacherWorks software.
This is the only way to run this type of older software in OS X Mavericks.
If this is too complicated for you, if you made a backup of your previous system setup and data, all you have to so is revert to your previous system,
If you have no backup of your system or data, you need to backup, at least, your important data by either burning CDs/DVDs, copy this data to high capacity USB Flash Drives or backup to an externally connected hard drive.
Then, you need to do a complete clean install of your previous OS X version from disc, redormat the hard drive which will completely wipe your hard drive of data! and reinstall your previous OS, all of your applications and then restore all of your data.
There is no other way to do this if you have no viable backup.

  • Cannot delete/change old iCloud id as email no longer exists

My old email account was deactivated last year and since then I have been unable to change this on my iCloud account as my id&password are no longer relevant. Please help!

If the old ID is yours, and if it is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • CHANGE OVER FROM TAXINJ TO TAXINN

    HI ALL ,
TAXINJ and TAXINN cannot co exist in the same system.
If you are talking about technical Upgrade, then I don't think this would be feasible since old Txn would have got posted with TAXINJ procedure with rates as defined in Tax codes and now after migration to TAXINN in same box, the system would pick value from Condition records.
Just check this basic point of feasibility before we go ahead and look for changes.
In SuN the change is for existing implementation, here at present they have R/3 4.7, and  are now in the process of technical upgrade to ECC 6.00; TAXINN is required to be implemented in the upgraded version.
At present they are using around 129 pricing procedures, 25 sales org,220 tax codes in TAXINJ. Suzlon has 21 company codes, 219 plants and 1300 end users the whole nature of group activities results in use of all possible types of indirect taxes in India like VAT, CST, Excise, Service Tax etc...
i have tried to search on sap help, service market place and others but could not come across any document for the change over. However i will try again.
what are the things i need to take care before any implications busisneww point of view, what will be the status of  open sales order and purchase orders, and  splitting delivery docs. which are under process, what will be the cutoverstrategy.
need ur help and guidance, thanks in advance.

    Hi
    Vasu Sri,
I got this document from some body might help u a bit.
Condition-Based Excise Determination in MM (New)
As of SAP R/3 Enterprise Core 4.70 (SAP_APPL 470), the system can calculate excise duties
and sales tax in Materials Management (MM) using the standard condition technique.
SAP has enhanced the existing tax procedure, TAXINJ, so that it now supports formula-based
and condition-based excise determination. The R/3 System also comes with a new tax procedure,
TAXINN, which only handles condition-based excise determination.
Which Tax Procedure Must I Use?
Existing customers must continue to work using the same tax procedure.
If you switch to a new tax procedure, you cannot display any documents that you have already
posted using the old tax procedure.
If you have worked with formula-based excise determination in previous releases and wish to
continue, you do not have to do anything. However, if you wish to start using the
condition-based excise determination method, proceed as specified below.
We recommend that new customers use the condition-based excise determination and tax
    procedure TAXINN.
<b>How Do the New Functions Work?</b>
First, customize the system in the activities listed below. Then, for each material, create one
condition record for each form of excise duty and sales tax that applies, and enter the tax code
for purchasing documents (see below) in every condition record.
When you come to create a purchase order, enter the tax code in each line item. The tax code
tells the system whether to look in the condition types for formula-based or condition-based
    excise determination
To set up the new excise determination method, carry out the following activities:

    What to do
    Check Calculation Procedure
Existing customers: Adjust your tax procedure to
match the changes to TAXINJ. Steps 560-583 are new, as are 593-598.
New customers: Create a copy of TAXINN.
    Select Tax Calculation Procedure
New customers only: Assign the copy of
    TAXINN to India.
    Maintain Excise Defaults
New customers only: Enter the condition type

    16.2 Condition-Based Tax Calculation (New)
    Verwendung
As of SAP R/3 Enterprise Core 4.70 (SAP_APPL 470), a new method for calculating taxes
in Brazil is available, which makes use of the standard condition technique. Tax rates, tax laws,
and special indicators that influence whether tax line items are included in the nota fiscal are all
stored in the system as condition records. An additional tax calculation procedure, TAXBRC, is
delivered for this new method, in addition to the existing one for Brazil, TAXBRJ.
    Auswirkungen auf den Datenbestand
You can continue to calculate taxes using the former method: when the system processes the tax
procedure assigned to the country (TAXBRJ), it calculates the taxes externally by calling
function module J_1BCALCULATE_TAXES. We do, however, recommend that you assign the
new procedure TAXBRC and use the condition-based tax calculation functions, as it enables you
to flexibly adapt the tax calculation logic to cover new legal requirements or special customer
    needs.
You will need to migrate your existing tax rate table entries to condition records, which you
can do directly from the Tax Manager's Workplace described below. You can check all tables
and subsequently convert the entries, whereby the system generates condition records. After the
initial migration, each time you create or change a tax rate table entry, the system automatically
generates a condition record as needed.
    Auswirkungen auf das Customizing
If you want to employ the new condition-based tax calculation, you need to activate it and
carry out all related Customizing activities, under Financial Accounting -> Financial
Accounting Global Settings -> Tax on Sales/Purchases -> Basic Settings -> Brazil
-> Condition-Based Tax Calculation, all of which are new:

In addition, you need to assign the new tax calculation procedure TAXBRC to the country in

A new Customizing tool called the Tax Manager's Workplace is available that enables you to

Access Tax Manager's Workplace, or alternatively by entering transaction J1BTAX. You can
use the Tax Manager's Workplace regardless if you use condition-based tax calculation; it
simply brings all tax activities to a single transaction (only the Migration, Nota-Fiscal Mapping,
and Condition Mapping options under the Condition Setup pulldown menu are relevant only for
    condition-based tax calculation).
16.3 Changes to Structures for Country Version India
    Verwendung
As of SAP R/3 4.7, Country Version India is no longer delivered as an add-on, but forms part
    of the standard system.
SAP has discontinued the Country Version India Implementation Guide (IMG) and has added its
activities have been added to the standard Reference IMG as follows:
Activities relating to withholding tax are now located in Customizing for Financial
Accounting (FI), under Financial Accounting Global Settings -> Withholding Tax.
Activities relating to excise duty and excise invoices are in Customizing for Logistics -
General, under Tax on Goods Movements -> India.
As far as the activities under Preparatory Activities are concerned, two of them (Activate
Country Version India for Accounting Interface and Activate Processes) are no longer
relevant and have been removed from the IMG entirely. The activity Execute Country
Installation Program is already included in the standard IMG under the name Localize Sample
Organizational Units. And the other two activities (Activate Country Version India for Specific
Fiscal Years and Activate Business Transaction Events) have been added to the standard IMG.
For information about other changes to the IMG relating to changes in the functions in Country
Version India, see the other release notes.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.8: Unable to use Nokia N9 as a Bluetooth modem

    Hi,
I'm unable to use my Nokia N9 mobile phone as a bluetooth modem. Phone and Gnome get paired OK, and I have even managed to get my phone recognized as a modem. However, Networkmanager complains that it can't find the modem.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Here are some log files:
