Hi Thomas,
OK. Both the modem and the router may need ports to be opened.
This can be done in several ways depending if your devices have the options.
ALl Router will come with the option to Port Forward. (so do some modems)
Data arrives on one port like say port 80 and web browsing.
The router uses Port Forwarding to send the data to a specific IP (Computer) and a specific port although the same one is often used.
Port Triggering is where data is expected to start on one port and more ports maybe needed and are opened when the data arrives on the trigger. The ports here tend to stay the same as well. It does however allow multiple comuters to use the ports.
In terms of set up UPnP is easiest. IF your device has it it is normally an On or Off setting.
Now when it comes to a Modem and a router then iChat can get fussy if there is two DHCP servers adn two lots of Network Address Translation (NAT). Port Forwarding and Port Triggering are both forms of NAT.
A DSL modem may well route as well and do this by issuing IPs by DHCP as default. The router could be as well.
Use this site as a reference in the first instance.
If your Devices are listed click on them.
Then choose iChat in the list of games and appications.
The following page will tell you the default User ID and Password as well as the IP to type in to a web browser to gain access to the set up pages.
Somethimes in the pics you can see where the UPnP setting is. (if you have it). Sometimes it is on the set uo pages but not shown in the pics as they concentrate on Port Forwarding.
You need to set up your LAN with no more than one DHCP server and only one lot of NAT if you have to use it.
Setting Static Addresses can get around the DHCP problem.
Tell us what devices you have ?

  • Adobe PDF Writer (v5.0) won't install; can't find LPT1 port

    I've searched extensively for an answer on this question, and the most common answer is no answer or use a newer PDF creator.
    The department I support uses database software that was never programmed to support any PDF creator past PDF Writer, so all users of this software have Acrobat Professional 5.0.5 installed using the "Custom" option to include the PDF Writer.
    All workstations run XP, sp3.  I have never seen this problem on any other machine.  I have installed version 5 on other machines with newer installations of Acrobat (7,8, and 9) with no functionality issues.  The machine that won't install the PDF Writer had V8 installed.  I have removed Acrobat V8 to try to get the V5 installation to run.  I have tried running the V5 installation first without PDF Writer, and then adding in the PDF Writer.
    In all cases, as soon as you click "Install" after checking "PDF Writer", the error "Acrobat PDF Writer requires a LPT1: printer port.  Setup could not find this required port.  The PDF Writer component will not be installed.  To install PDF Writer, add a LPT1: port and run setup again" always appears, and the installation tries to continue without the PDF Writer.
    This computer has a fully-functioning LPT1 port (as well as LPT2 and LPT3) which is not in use by any other printers (according to the printer properties display).  XP shows the port under Device Manager as functioning properly, although I have both disabled/re-enabled the port, as well as uninstalling it and rebooting, at which point it re-installs properly.
    All high-priority Windows XP updates are current and again, on similar machines, similarly imaged, I have never had this problem using the same media.  I have tried installing a printer on this port and adding drivers.  All machine users have Administrator privileges (unfortunately)
    Due to the large quantity of data and software on this user's machine (and the fact that otherwise it runs great), I would REALLY rather not re-image the machine.
    Any help or ideas will be GREATLY appreciated.

    Hey, good idea, and I hadn't done it, but nothing is remaining from any previous Acrobat installs (according to the Cleanup Utility).  I do pretty good registry cleanup on these machines as I work on them for other reasons/updates.
    Other ideas?

  • Sign Applet to write on LPT1 port - permission error

    Hi,
    I have this simple applet
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class TestJavaXp extends Applet{
         public void putJavaArray(String arrayAsAString) {
         int i = 0;
         String s = "Stampa questo testo";

              FileWriter out = new FileWriter("LPT1");
              out.write(s);
              out.flush();
              out.close();
             catch (IOException e) {
              e.printStackTrace();
    }I signed the applet but I receive this error:
    uncaught exception: Error calling method on NPObject!
    *[plugin exception: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.ioFilePermission LPT1 write)]*
    It works perfectly only if I grant permissions in the java.policies file.
    Why?
    I've no problem signing applets that write files on disk, I've troubles only with LPT1 port but I need it.
    I tried different browsers.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.

  • How to use thunderbolt port with disks and DVI-display

    Hello,
    today I use a 15" MacBookPro and have attached 1TB LaCie with FW800  (for time machine) and DVI-Display using Mini-port.
    Need to add more external disk space and look for Lacie 2 TB with thunderbolt connection (for storing mass of pictures in Raid1 version)
    Is it possible to connect the new disk, the other disk with an Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter and the DVI-Display to one thunderbolt port?
    What are the options I have, to get all three to work at the same time?

    No, or at least not without additional hardware. You have too many end-points for one Thunderbolt chain.
    You also have the problem that the Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter is not yet for sale.
    If the new disk you get has two Thunderbolt ports (which not all do), you could daisy-chain the Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter behind it, but that adapter has to be at the end of the chain. The Mini-port->DVI adapter likewise needs to be at the end of a chain.
    So, you can probably get all three connected at one time by connecting the "1TB LaCie with FW800  (for time machine)" to your FW800 port, while connecting the Thunderbolt->FW800 adapter (when available) to the second port of the new disk. I say "probably" because nobody has the TB-FW adapter yet to try it.
    As for doing it on one Thunderbolt port with additional hardware, you might look into third-party docking stations being released in the next few months. The announced prices are in the low-to-middle hundreds. I won't mention brand names, as this is an Apple forum, but they aren't too hard to find by web search.
    The highest-priced solution would be the Apple Thunderbolt Display, which gives you a FW800 port for your 1TB drive, a pass-thru Thunderbolt port for your new disk, and of course a 2560x1440 display (plus ethernet and usb2 ports you may not need). It's available now, in the uppermost hundreds. There are some refurbs in the online Apple Store at the moment at 15% off.

    - Try restoring the iPod, first from backup and then try to factory settings/new iPod to rule out a software problem.
    - Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, foreign material and broken or cracked plastic.
    - Could you have damaged something when you took the iPod apart and replaced the Home button?

  • Cant use DVI-D port with DVI-D cable from Pav 500-100a to HP W2207 monitor

    I have a new Pav 500-100a factory standard with no mods.  A HP w2207 monitor.
    Currently connect fine with VGA to the DVI-D port with the adapter that came with the pc.  I've setup Windows, updated to 8.1, put in my files from my old PC and all was well except video isnt that good.
    I got a DVD cable form work but its a DVI-I cable.  It took 5 mins before windows comes up and then whenever the background picture changed in the theme it hung for a few seconds.  I read that I need a DVD-D cable which i purchasd today.
    The packet says its a CL-DVI2M - DVI M/M 24+1 CABLE 2M.  The tech in the shop says its a good calbe and will work fine.
    When connected and I power up I get teh hp logo and rolling dots then it goes blank.
    I reconnect teh VGA cable and its all fine - using the VGA to DVI adapter.
    I ran msconfig and turned of safe boot - restarts and comes up fine in safe mode.  I set the resolution to 1280x800 and restarted and reconnected the DVI cable - blank again.
    If I put the VGA cable back in it boots fine.  The monitor has been factory reset and seens the DVI connection but Windows remains blank. Also tried booting first with no cable - connect teh DVI and the monitor remains in sleep - power reset teh monitor and still blank also shows no DVO conenction.
    I fI power up with DVI connected I can get to BIOS, and i see the HP logo and dots as Win 8 starts.
    I dont know what else I can try.  I have no other usable video card with DVI
    Any ideas out there?
    Pls help - Steve
    Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi Steve,
    Only connect one active video cable to the monitor and do not use any adapters.
    Use a flashlight and examine the DVI connector on the monitor.  Which DVI type is it?
    Some of the older HP monitors have DVI issues so you might want to check with HP Support and see if you have one of those models.
    An older post a long time back indicated that audio also had to be feed to the monitor (claimed by a poster).  If this is indeed true then it's a monitor design flaw. So, you could use a native HDMI cable and test out that claim.

  • How can i output a voltage on PCI-6229 port with visual basic 6 ?

    Hello,
    PCI-6229 card is using DAQmx, that not support VB 6 officially.
    However, members of this forum found out a way to write/read on digital port with vb6 and DAQmx.
    This was working well for me indeed.
    Then, i wanted to output a voltage on AO. I followed the same procedure they used for DI/DO but in vain.
    Apparently, the function DAQmxCreateAOVoltageChan()* causes trouble.
    Using the .exe of the program, i get this error :

    Thank you for any ideas that can sort this out.

  • I need lots of USB ports with New Mac Pro, now what?

    because I'm in the audio business I needs lot of USB ports with my Mac Pro. On my current 2008 machine, that's not really an issue, with 5 ports on teh MP itself and I installed some USB hubs over PCIe that give me a total of 13 port. I'm not really sure what is the best way to get that amount on the new MP.
    Oh, and I really like the stability of my current set up. Before I went with an external USB Hub that always gave me headaches with ports not being recognized.

    The only two things I found so far are:
    a/ going back to the external USB hubs, which I find very frustrating to work with, because instable with connection and I would need to add some interface to go from USB to TB (which are also rather expensive at the moment)
    b/ use some external PCIe enclosures that are really expensive.
    So I havent really found the right solution for my situation. Which makes me hesitant to migrate to new MP at the moment.

    No hdmi port with this laptop?

    Only some laptops HDMI ports - of current models, the MacBook Pros do and the Macbook Airs don't. You can get adaptors from Thunderbolt (or Displayport on an older laptop, the plug is physically the same) to HDMI: for example this one.

  • 802.1x per host authentication under one port with multi-host access by hub

    Dear,
    While multi-host connect to one port by hub, it seems that in multi-host mode, after one host passed the authentication, the port change state to up, and the other hosts do not need to authenticate any more. And in single host mode, only one host could access to the network under one port.
    In the situation with multi-host access to one port by hub, is it possible that we could control per user access by authentication for each?
    We did some test on 3550, it seems that the 3550 doesnot support what we need. And what about 4506?
    Thanks!

    Multiauthentication Mode
    Available in Cisco IOS Release 12.2(33)SXI and later releases, multiauthentication (multiauth) mode allows one 802.1X/MAB client on the voice VLAN and multiple authenticated 802.1X/MAB/webauth clients on the data VLAN. When a hub or access point is connected to an 802.1X port (as shown in Figure 60-5), multiauth mode provides enhanced security over the multiple-hosts mode by requiring authentication of each connected client. For non-802.1X devices, MAB or web-based authentication can be used as the fallback method for individual host authentications, which allows different hosts to be authenticated through different methods on a single port.
    Multiauth also supports MDA functionality on the voice VLAN by assigning authenticated devices to either a data or voice VLAN depending on the data that the VSAs received from the authentication server.
    Release 12.2(33)SXJ and later releases support the assignment of a RADIUS server-supplied VLAN in multiauth mode, by using the existing commands and when these conditions occur:
    •The host is the first host authorized on the port, and the RADIUS server supplies VLAN information.
    •Subsequent hosts are authorized with a VLAN that matches the operational VLAN.
    •A host is authorized on the port with no VLAN assignment, and subsequent hosts either have no VLAN assignment, or their VLAN information matches the operational VLAN.
    •The first host authorized on the port has a group VLAN assignment, and subsequent hosts either have no VLAN assignment, or their group VLAN matches the group VLAN on the port. Subsequent hosts must use the same VLAN from the VLAN group as the first host. If a VLAN list is used, all hosts are subject to the conditions specified in the VLAN list.
    •After a VLAN is assigned to a host on the port, subsequent hosts must have matching VLAN information or be denied access to the port.
    •The behavior of the critical-auth VLAN is not changed for multiauth mode. When a host tries to authenticate and the server is not reachable, all authorized hosts are reinitialized in the configured VLAN.
    NOTE :
    •Only one voice VLAN is supported on a multiauth port.
    •You cannot configure a guest VLAN or an auth-fail VLAN in multiauth mode.

  • Is it possible to control the parallel port with Lookout 5.0

    I want a simple demo setup on a PC, so I can control the 8 data bits of the parallel port. Example, to use START p/b that would toggle bit 0 and data returned on bit 1.

    It is possible to send bytes to the parallel port using the ASCII object within Lookout. However, it is presently not possible to control the state of the individual bits on the parallel port with Lookout.
    If you need to control the individual bits on a parallel port, consider using LabVIEW. It is much more powerful when programming serial and parallel ports.

    Hi,
    Was the card previously working in that machine? If it was and you have a G5 tower you could try the card in there. Here is a list of Apple fibre cards and cables which show what's compatible with what. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1769
    The card should appear in the System Profiler under Fibre Channel and PCI Cards.

  • Airport Extreme Simultaneous Dual-Band port forwarding broken if only TCP ports with firmware 7.6.1

    When configuring my Airport Extreme Simultaneous Dual-Band router, port forwarding is broken if you only specify TCP ports to forward. This is with firmware 7.6.1. What happens is that after you hit the Update button, when the router comes back and you open the port forwarding entry, the IP is still there but the port numbers are missing.
    I tried all different port numbers and ranges and nothing would stick if i only specified TCP ports. If i added UDP ports with the TCP ports then it would save them. And if you add a new entry with only UDP it saves them too.
    Now this is with adding a new port forwarding. I already have existing ports being forwarded that only have TCP. They are still working. I believe i added them with a previous version of the firmware.
    Any one else see this issue? Any ideas?
    Maybe i should perform a hard reset and reload a saved config.
    Peace,

    I haven't seen the issue but you could just downgrade to an earlier firmware:
