No luck w/WinXP (K7N2-Delta-L)

Hello everyone,
I'm going nuts with this d*mn board. No matter what I try - (and I'm trying since Saturday now!) I can't get a working WinXP pro (SP1) installalion. The system just keeps retting. :-(
This is my configuration
- K7N2-Delta-L (tried w/BIOS 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2)
- 2*512 MBytes DDR-333 RAM (Infineon 3MY02C16C, Cl2.5)
- Maxtor Harddisk 120GB (6Y120P0)
- PixelView Ti4200/128MB/VIVO
- DVD-ROM Pioneer 106-S
- PSU TSP-420P4 (28A @3.2V, 42A @5V, 18A @12V)
The following hardware belongs to the computer as well, but was excluded after the first installation failed and thus not part of the last 20 or so tries:
- RealMAgic XCard
- Soundblater Live! Platinum (no Audigy!)
- Promise TX2-100 IDE controller (no RAID)
- DVD-Writer NEC-1100A
- CD-Writer TEAC CD-W524E
On-Board Audio was desabled the whole time; for testing purposes, I also disabled Ethernet. Furthermore, I tried reducing the RAM size to one 512MByte stick. In a desperate move, I also repladed the graphics adapter with a VERY old ATI card (RagePro, I think) for some tests.
Regardless of what I tried, I always got one of the following results:
1. Most of the time, the XP installation never really starts, but hangs at "Setup is starting Windows".
2. The other frequent outcome is a reset at the very same spot.
3. Just once, in one of the early tests, I got the system to install Windows XP by selecting "Standard PC" as HAL during installation (via F5). The system could shut itself down anymore, of course; further more the Promise controller didnt work properly, causing XP to reset whenever I accessed the CD-Writer. I then tried to replace/update the driver - which resulted in a hanging system. After the next reset, the system didn't boot anymore, resetting itself before the login screen comes up - regardless of what I select for booting, e.g. "Start normally", "Safe more", "Safe more with Network", "Last good config". All the same, every time a reset without any notice whatsoever.
That's the status Quo - after three days of failing to even install a stable OS, I've run out of ideas.
Can anybody help me out in any way with this board? I'm at the verge of throwing it into the garbage bin. :-(
Any help greatly appreciated
Heseltine

Hello again,
wow, many suggestions. Thanks very much; let's try a batch reply. :-)

Hes, could you borrow a plane crdrom drive from someone, and try installing with it? I had a new DVDROM drive which had trouble with certain disks. It may just solve your problem
I see what I can do - but AFAIK, no one I know uses plain CD-ROM drives anymore. Plus, I never had any problems installing from DVD-ROMs (or writers) before.

No It isn't a CD problem, I had that very same problem w/ my Win XP and I know it was frustrating, it took me about 5 hours just to get setup going. All I did was that I got pretty fed up and I went through the CMOS and started changing random options that I thought could affect installing Windows. Sure enough, when I went back install Windows it worked. I don't know what I did specifically though , but remember, if you want to do the same thing be familiar w/ the jumpers on the board.
That frustration led me to messing with F5 in WinXP installation  :-). As there is a sh*tload of parameters in the BIOS - some of which I don't know at all - I think it's futile just changing anything at random. The odds that I find just what you found are infinitesimal. :-Z

Try adjusting the RAM timings. When I tried to boot with the XP CD it kept resetting because my RAM was timed too aggressively.
That one I already tried - I went down as far as:
 - FSB to 100 MHz
 - RAM SPD 1:1 (i.e. 100 MHz as well)
 - RAM settings to 9-3-3-3.0
which didn't change anything at all, I'm sad to say.

dont connect any optical devices to a promise card.
it does NOT work no mather what promise says
Well, I tried installing w/o the controller to no avail, but I know that the promise Ultra100 TX2 works fine at least with a Plextor CD writer, as that very configuration is running on a backup/restore PC at work for 15 months now. That's why I was using the Promise controller in the first place.
Anyway, if anyone has further ideas: anything is still very highly appreciated.
Greetings

I installed 6 operating systems on my pc (WinXp Home Edition Turkish/English,WinXP Pro Turkish/English,Win98 Turkish/English) and tested it, but every time i meet the same thing (MS Blue Screen Of Death Sux...).I checked the WinXP`s logs and searched for error code`s meaning from microsoft knowledge database. They are saying nothing about this problem but the problem`s root is coming from a bad device driver. It seems to be a generic problem for all operating systems cuz all of them were restarting themselves randomly, before i close "auto-restart on critical errors" option. After i saw some messages on forums , i searched for my RAM maker`s home page then i learned that my RAM is assembled with VIA KT Series and SIS chips & optimized for them. I think nForce is too picky about rams. But i aint sure about where the hell is this problem coming from. If you guys are sure about that is an unsupported ram problem and knew the list of ram marks&models that supported by MSI K7N2 Delta -L ,please help me about this damn problem. Thanks for your help.
Note : I tried Asus Ati Radeon 9200SE 64mb g.adapter (some peoples told me thats about g.adapter), but problem continued.

If I read correctly in your specs I see only 11 Amps on the +12v Rail. Is this correct?
If so, I'd advise a PSU that has at least 18 amps on the +12v Rail, perhaps as low as 16 with the other rails to match as shown currently in your spec.
11 Amps is just way too underpowered for that rig. I am surprised it even boots.
At what point does the BSOD occur?

  • Can't install OEM version of WinXP on the K7N2 Delta!??!?

I posted on amdmb.com's forums about how I cannot get WinXP to install on my hard drive connected to the k7n2 delta. Wonkanoby, a senior moderator on one of the boards here, and a visiotor on those boards at amdmb.com, stated that OEM versions won't work on this mainboard and you have to have a retail box windows version. Is this true? if so, this is complete crap! If MSI thinks I'm going to spend $150 bucks on a retail boxed version of Xp when I have a perfectly fine working copy right here, they are N U T S!!! This has got to be the most outrageous thing I've ever heard concerning mainboard issues. I hope MSI realizes they will either be working on a bios fix or they're paying me the restocking fee to send this board back to Newegg.

How to Install the OEM Version Windows XP Professional
    Last updated: 6/18/02
    Q.  How Do You Install the Windows XP Pro OEM Version?
    A.  I install it on a new computer (or hard disk drive taken down to "bare metal") from the DOS prompt with a Windows 98 Startup floppy (http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/software/windows/startup/startup.htm). Put a copy of smartdrv.exe on the Startup floppy. You should be able to find a copy on and existing Windows 9x/Me computer at C:windows. It is on the CD’s in D:win98.  Boot to the floppy and use fdisk to partition the drive (the process the same as that at http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/upgrade/fdisk.htm. Format the C: drive. Do not install the system files. If you have more than one partition, they can be formatted during the Windows XP installation or with Windows XP after it is installed. Also, use fdisk to manually make C: active if there is more one partition. Load smartdrv.exe…
    A:>smartdrv.exe
    …and run D:i386winnt.exe, where D: is your CD-ROKM drive.
Do not delete or reformat C: with this method.  Winnt.exe copies the install files to that partition. You can convert it to NTFS and that process is fast.  It should also work if the i386 directory is copied to a scratch hard disk and the hard disk is connected to the secondary IDE interface.
OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer = a company that makes/markets computers (and parts), etc. which include parts made by other companies, and not the “original” manufacturer as OEM implies, just masquerading as one.  Licenses of OEM versions of Windows, etc. software are sold to computer manufactures for installation on new computers.  They are full versions of Windows, not upgrades.  They are widely available on the "grey market" and Internet and cost considerably less than retail full versions.  Just be careful not to purchase a pirated copy.

  • Problems with DMA (WinXP + MSI K7N2-Delta)

    Hi!
I'm having problems with my IDE dvd-burner (NEC-1300) as I can't get it to use DMA in Windows XP. The motherboard is a MSI K7N2-Delta. I've tried using Nvidia's newest driverpack, 2.45, but in vain. The only mode I can use is PIO and it slows slows down the computer.
    Thanks in advance!

On Primary Master I have a 60Gb Seagate Barracuda ATA IV. And the Secondary Master is the NEC-1300 http://www.necd.de/productdetail.php/id/672, which is supposed to be fully capable of UDMA-2 (33) as all the modern drives are (some are even UDMA66). The drive are jumpered as Masters. The wires are ok (UDMA100).
Registry editing suggested in a another message didn't work, neither did deleting the ide-channel.
I found a temporary solution to this: I placed the DVD-RW as Primary Slave and it works. The drive is detected as UDMA33-capable. Why it doesn't work as Secondary Master is beyond my knowledge.

I ended up giving up on it for the time being, just using my SMC NIC. Would be quite interested in finding out what the problem is though.
Anyone else in the same boat?
    Hi,
Your problem is not the same, SiliconMan is trying to connect with a dial-up modem not LAN. Your problem sounds like it may be configuration, do a search on this post, I'm sure you will find people with onboard LAN troubles. It's hard to troubleshoot though since you didn't provide any info about your computer. Good Luck

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR MB Problems, Need Help ASAP!! PLEASE

Ok  I just got this motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta) Yesterday and after getting it setup I began overclocking the Processor (an AMD Athlon XP Barton Mobile 2500+) I was at 11x 215 1.750V Perfectly. I moved to 216 it started to seem unstable so I pushed the VCORE up to 1.775 and tried 217. It couldn't boot so I dropped it back down and decided ok 208 and a 11.5 multi might get me past the 2.4 mark which I was looking for. Well when I changed the Multi. to 11.5 and said save the system just sate as the flashing y for save. I could not change it to n I had already pushed enter So i firgured great and left it alone for a few minutes, nothing so I reset it. Now it refuses to boot/post. It spinds the fans the HD's the Network port is going but I get no picture. I have cleared the CMOS using the jumper I have removed the battery and power for over an hour and I still get nothing. I am assuming this is a BIOS error but I am not sure what to do to fix it. Does anyone here kno maybe, something I have yet to try something I can do? I would hate to RMA it and have to wait on newegg. Hell the thing is a day old. So please any idea's are welcome I have this posted on the Hard Forums as well but I am hopinh this forum may be more popular with getting help as no one is helping over there. Thanks!

    Hi,
Cross: Just in case you are doing something wrong there's a clear CMOS guide here, follow it to the letter (and don't forget to put the FSB jumper to SAFE beforehand - there's a note about it in the guide).
    How To Clear the CMOS
Your system board or CPU maybe not be dead yet - I had a similar problem with one of my boards and I tried everything - to cut a long story short I eventually got it working!!!
Btw, If you can't boot or get into the BIOS put your other CPU in (clear BIOS again after fitting!), so that you can prove whether your motherboard is working correctly!
Good luck!   I'm off ta bed!

  • K7N2 Delta 2

On a K7N2 Delta 2 series motherboard does anyone know how high of a cpu I can put in.right now I am running a Socket A Amd Sempron 2500+.but I cant find the highest cpu it will run on.

Or for a lot less you could buy a mobile chip and run it faster and cooler at lower vcore than an xp3200......got mine going 200Mhz faster just now!! Hard to find new but worth it as they are the cream of the crop selected for their ability to run at 1.35/1.45 volts and therefore make excellent overclockers. Mines standard settings is 133x14 but its running at 218x11 just now!! xp3200 tend to be overpriced just now for some strange reason. I wanted one but didnt fancy paying so much for one. So glad i went for the cheaper and definately faster option. Guaranteed to be a good overclocker as long as its not a 1.65v desktop replacement one. stepping codes are important also so do a bit of research first via google....IQYHA and IQZHA one are the best ones. multiplier is unlocked on them all too.
    good luck!!

  • K7N2 Delta Only 100MHz FSB works

It's the K7N2 Delta ILSR model. I have an AMD 1800 CPU (will be getting AMD 3000 w/ 400 FSB when FedEx feels like visiting me...) As far as I know, the FSB speed should be 133MHz in BIOS. This worked fine on my previous motherboard, but now when I set it, the system will lock up once a slight load gets placed on the CPU (i.e. starting WinXP, loading setup for XP, etc). When I drop the FSB to 100MHz it doesn't lock up, but it doesn't register the CPU speed correctly (and it shouldn't..)
Any ideas on how to fix it? I have another CPU on the way but in the meantime I wanted to use this one.
    It is a 350W PSU, 2x 512MB 400MHz Kingston HyperX RAM, MSI GF4 Ti4200 GPU.
    Thanks for any input.

Yep, made sure the Fan/HS was on right before replacing it.
Oh well. Maybe something happened to the CPU in the brief period of time while I was switching boards, that caused it to not operate right at it's regular speed. I guess I'll know when I get my other CPU. If that does the same thing, I guess it narrows it down some.
Still haven't tested that memory yet though.

  • K7N2 deltas mainboards have a problem with usb devices ??

    Ok here is my problem..
I had installed WinXP Pro with SP1..
I got a 20 GB USB2.0 disk.i connected it on the both front or rear usb ports.
When i tried to transfer files to my usb disk or to my PC, in the middle of the copying, i got "Write Delay Failed" error and lost my usb connection..
I had to plug it out and in again..
Now, i have an DSL modem..Last night, i was disconnected from internet and my modem's lights gone..I plug it again, no lights..restarted my PC, also completely shutdown Windows XP..Again no lights..
Then, formatted PC and installed windows 2000 Pr and SP4, until now, my modem worked fine..But USB 2.0 ports are still no use for my usb disk...
In bios , it's enabled as USB 1.1+2.0..
I think this K7N2 deltas have a problem with usb 2.0 devices and Win XP Pro..
Some guys talking about, removing 9th wire earth, but couldn't understand which wire from where ? From mainboard or from usd device's cable ?
Those cables are fabricated, i think it's impossible ?
My processor is Athlon 2500+, ram Twinmos 512 DDR 400
    Thanks for reply

I'm also having this problem. It's happening with my USB flash disk. I was almost buying another one when I tried it with Windows Vista on the same machine and it worked ok, then I tried Arch Linux (with kernel 2.6.30.5) on another machine and got the same error. After that I tried Ubuntu and it worked ok. Seems that Arch's kernel doesn't like my USB flash disk.
