"No Mac Can Handle" professional Orchestral sample libraries?

Hi,
What I do: Film / TV / Ensemble composer
Sample Libraries I use: As my normal palate; Symphonic Choirs, LA Scoring Strings, Vienna Woodwinds, Project Sam Orchestral Brass, Storm Drum 2. Plus others for colour.  I WILL be expanding this in the future.
What I want: A system that will allow me to work with all these plugins (in Logic Studio), without sticking up 'Failed to process data in time' or any other errors! I need it to WORK, so I can edit and get on with composing! My current system can't even handle Symphonic Choirs, or LA Scoring Strings on their OWN!
I'm using a mix of high quality sound libraries, and I'm doing orchestral scoring, so I need something that can run ALL the sound libraries at once without falling over!
I was thinking of buying this iMac:
2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512MB GDDR5
Someone else suggested I skip that and go for a MacPro.
Since then, on another forum I've been advised that even people running 8 Core systems have them fall over due to CPU usage spiking to 100% when JUST using LA Scoring Strings (Nothing else)!!! Obviously I'm going to be putting my system under alot more strain then that.
Some people have suggested using PC Slaves as this is apparently 'the only way' to do it without it falling over - but obviously I don't want to do that as all my software is geared for mac, and I love the operating ease!
I don't understand how the 'top' composers do it, there doesn't seem to be a system built that can handle this stuff.
HELP ME FELLOW MAC COMPOSERS - you're my only hope! Please specify what sample libraries you are using concurrently (so I can get an idea that we're trying to do the same thing), or how you have managed it!
Any help gratefully appreciated. What do I buy?!

As for your error message, it appears to be an incomplete entry from your logfile of what happened. Open your Console application and see if it has any more details such as USB, Memory, CPU, Firewire, or 80211, or ATAPI, etc... The standards mentioned in your logfile of the crash will give you some indication where the problem is. Is your data backed up? How full is your hard drive? Can you reproduce the error in a second admin account with no system modifications running?

  • Looking for Mac that can handle CPU intensive apps (Music & Video)

Hi everyone, I am looking to get a new mac in the near future but wanted to know which Desktop mac is best for music and video? I was thinking of the new iMac but not sure if they are powerful enough? I need something that can handle CPU intensive stuff. I will be using it mainly for video editing and music producing

    In a nutshell,
Look at the new 27 inch screen iMac models.
    Get the fastest optional CPU,
Decide which optional GPU you'd be comfortable with.
Get the base 8 GBs of RAM and then purchase extra, cheaper RAM through third party Mac RAM sellers.
Then add as much RAM as you think you need. The 27 inch screen models can take up to 32 GBs of RAM.
    Decide on optional storage sizes.
If you need a CD / DVD optical drive, these are no longer built-in and you will need to budget for a good external optical drive.
Budget for 3-year extended AppleCare warranty service.
In case of reliability issues with the first 5 years of operational life, the iMac will be covered with free warranty service for the first three years.
    Good Luck!

  • IMovie project too detailed. Mac can't handle it.

I'm editing a VERY long and complicated iMovie project with a lot of transparent videos on top of another, texts, audio files, high quality video clips, transitions, etc. Basically what has happened is the project is so detailed and complicated that the Mac can't edit it or handle it anymore. I open it up and I try to click on a clip and I get the rainbow wheel, I can't even move my mouse over the project, I just get the rainbow wheel.
The Mac is 2.66 gHz, and intel core dual processor. I need to finish editing this project (which is currently 19 minutes and 46 seconds long), so I need to know if theres anyway to allow my Mac to do this.
My Idea was to link several other Mac's together and network them to make one supercomputer with crazy power. I think you do with it a firewire cable.
Does anyone know a lot about this supercomputer method, how to do it, if software is required etc.? Maybe someone has a different method to solve my problem?
    Much appreciated,
    Jared.

Are you possibly running low on free space on your start up drive?  For a complicated project you should have more than 25GB of free space on your boot drive.
If that's not the problem sometimes a simple restart will help.
Also, sometimes permissions and preferences can get corrupted. Whenever iMovie starts acting funny, a common maintenance procedure is to do the following: Delete preferences by closing iMovie and trashing the file com.apple.iMovie.plist found in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility App on your Mac. Open the DiskUtilities window and select the Mac hard drive icon at the top of the side pane at the left. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. When you have repaired permissions and deleted preferences, restart your computer and launch iMovie. iMovie will replace the .plist file that you deleted.  Then see if you still have the problem.
I don't know what version of iMovie you are using, but when I am working on long or complicated movies in iM6 I often divide the project into 2 or more iMovie projects for editing purposes, and then join them together at the end.
    Good luck with this.

  • Sample libraries for EXS24?

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for add-on sample libraries in EXS24 format.
    Any good ones?

Are the AKAI samples good? If so, how does one obtain them?
Yes, many developers developed libraries for the Akai format back when the Akai samplers were considered top of line hardware. One such company was none-other than Spectrasonics.
    http://www.ilio.com/spectrasonics/samplelibraries/index.htm
    Others included Ilio
    http://www.ilio.com/ilio/index.htm
    And Sonic Reality
    http://www.ilio.com/sonicreality/index.htm
As mentioned, Kirk Hunter still releases his orchestral stuff in native EXS format. But yes, a lot of the Akai library is a good place to start, and the built in Akai to EXS conversion works really well (at least it did back 3 or 4 years ago when I converted my whole Akai Library to EXS).
Also, GIGA 2 or 2.5 libraries can be converted as well. There is more required on the back-end to fix some programming that doesn't come across, but if you have a handle on the EXS, and it's editor, it's all doable.

  • The best DAW for Logic and big sample libraries... no more system overload

I'm planning on going big and getting the Mac Pro Two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 16 GB of RAM and add two additional 1 TB drives, one for samples and one for projects. It's been suggested that I include a RAID 5 and that it will make streaming of the samples faster and also safer and more reliable for backing up data.
With my current setup I constantly have to freeze tracks of sampled instruments or I get system overload.
Do I need RAID or am I better off without it?

    Gabe Garza wrote:

I'm not sure why you consider this a bad thing.
Having to constantly freeze/unfreeze takes time and disrupts workflow. It's a good option to have if you need it, but much nicer if you don't.
    Johnny,
I would strongly advise against diving straight in with 16GB of RAM. There are a lot threads around that discuss how much RAM Logic can even recognize, you should check them out. I don't remember the details very well, but I feel like 16GB was more that it can handle (maybe that was just for ESX...). In any case, don't buy a Mac pre-installed with all that memory; Apple charges way too much for their RAM, and you can find perfectly functional, guaranteed RAM from third-party sellers. I bought my Mac Pro with the base amount of RAM and have added as needed, and I recommend you do the same.
When you play your projects, look at your CPU window.
Look at the Audio and Disk I/O meters.
If Audio is peaking, you need more CPU's
If Disk I/O is peaking, a faster I/O on your hard drive is needed.
I would also recommend doing this. Are you getting "core audio overload" messages, or another type? If you get core audio overload messages while your System Performance meters aren't peaking (or getting close to it), getting a faster machine isn't necessarily the answer. Core audio overloads are kind of tricky--some people with slower machines get them rarely, others with very fast machines get them often. If you haven't read up on this issue, I recommend you do so.
I'm not too savvy on RAID arrays, but I have a few thoughts. How likely are you to need your PCI slots for other cards? The specs for the Mac Pro lists 3 PCI slots, which I believe means 3 empty ones, i.e. doesn't include the one that holds your graphics card. Do you expect to add a second graphics card? PCI based audio interface? Anything else like that? A RAID setup will occupy one of those PCI slots, just keep that in mind. Second, while a RAID 5 array is a pretty secure way to store your data, you ought to have an external backup drive anyway, so maybe it wouldn't be worth it ($700 for a RAID card, yikes!). Lastly, it's likely that any of the most popular 1TB drives (search barefeats.com for some articles on these) will be sufficient to do what you need them too. I don't know how involved your Logic sessions are, but I've never maxed out my disk I/O while using my Western Digital Caviar 640.

  • Logic can't find Ultrabeat samples after swapping hard-drive-HELP!

    Hi!
I have just replaced my 'audio' drive with a larger one. From 280Gb to 1Tb. Woohoo
I named the new drive exactly the same thing as my old drive, Same format (Extended Journaled) Copied the entire folder structure across intact - and as far as I can see - all the paths to all my audio are exactly the same as they were on my old drive... Even the cute icons on the shortcuts in my sidebar are now automatically linking to the correct places in my new drive.
    BUT...
Logic now can't find anything. Well lets be more specific, When I try to load a song there seem to be two types of files it can't locate:
1/ Ultrabeat samples. Ie: the .aif and .wav samples that I have loaded into my own custom Ultrabeat instruments. When loading a song a dialog box appears asking me to find these audio files for it...
Not such a 'show stopper' you may think, but I have anywhere up to 10 Ultrabeat instruments in a song - and, of course, each one has up to 20 samples... Multiply by 50 songs - yeah - you get the point - this is nightmarish
2/ Audio files referenced in the song itself with long file names. Logic seems to be finding audio files in the song with short file names, but then comes up with dialog boxes during song load asking me to find filenames that are TRUNCATED! argh! So instead of the file 'Kik-Reggaeton warm 01' I am asked to locate 'Kik-reggaeton wa#16E59'. Now I have a lot of reggaeton kicks!! Which one does it want? And note also - that in the audio files associated with the song - none of the file names have been truncated! So which one is it looking for????? Corrupted look-up table? Wha?????
    Just to clarify too:
    -Logic 7.2.3 (961.9)
    -PPC G5, 2.5Mb Ram
    -Osx 10.4.11
And the system drive has remain unchanged! I have just swapped out my drive with all my Audio on it. So my /user path and so on remains unchangted.
This is driving me NUTS! I have a beautiful big new drive to play with, am bursting the seams of my current one and have an album to finish... I've looked on every Logic forum and group I can find and there is very little reference to this kind of problem, but I'm sure some-one else must have come across this before... There are some very cool tools in Project manager for resolving this kind of problem - but they only apply to EXS instruments and songs - not Ultrabeat instruments!
    PLEASE HELP!
    Thanks,
    Dan

Well, I just tired the cloning approach, using 'Carbon Copy Clone', and unfortunately...
    The problem remains.
Can anyone help here? Does anyone have a contact within the Logic development team?
Below is the problem again in as concise format as I can make it, can any-one forward this on?
    Thanks for any help...
    THE MAIN QUESTION
Does the Ultrabeat Instrument in Logic 7 store some form of unique Drive Identifier in it's path information for each sample it loads (in relation to user loaded samples - not preset samples.)
    THE PROBLEM
I have an internal 'Audio' Drive (300Gb) in my G5, which I would like to replace with a new drive (1000Gb). But when I copy all my data across (including all my sample libraries) and then run Logic - Ultrabeat no longer can find the samples on the new drive. Of course - since I have hundreds of Ultrabeat instruments each with up to 24 samples referenced, having to find and point to each sample would take a looooong time.
Furthermore, internally Ultrabeat seems to be truncating long file names, so asking me to find "KIK-File name tester f#F15C.wav" and of course I have many such files with the differentiating number at the END of the filename - so I cannot tell which file it wants.
    MORE DETAILS
    -Logic 7.2.3 (961.9)
    -PPC Dual 2Ghz G5, 2.5Mb Ram
    -Osx 10.4.11
I have tried Carbon Clone Copying the data from old drive to new drive. The Drive Names are the same, so as far as I can tell the entire path for the samples should identical... Other applications correctly find files on the new drive. Mac OS resolves paths correctly to the extent that custom Folder Icons display correctly on the new drive.
Ultrabeat asks me to find both samples with short filenames, and long filenames. The long filenames it asks for are truncated in the 'Ultrabeat:Please Locate:filename' window.
Furthermore, some SONG data is not found - any file referenced in a song with a long file name is asked to be found by the truncated name.
    'Audio file "bustarhymes-touch_it#F14C.aif" not found!
Audio with short filenames ARE succesfully found by the song.
This is not so bad because with Project Manager I have some tools to locate samples, but these tools do not apply to the Ultrabeat instrument - which is my main problem.

  • Search  application that can handle regular expressions

I am desperately seeking for my PhD an OSX 10.6 application that can search through all my data. That application need to have *efficient search algorithms* for complex pattern searching.
For example I want to search all my documents having the word cancer inside the file.
Not only search for the filename cancer BUT search inside the documents with all the extensions (pdf, rtf, doc, etc.)
    In Windows I use +Filelocator Pro+.
Is there a Mac OSX application like +Filelocator Pro+ for search?
An application that can handle regular expression support, with any of the following options:
+Export results to Text, command line options, Network drive searching, Boolean searches (e.g. AND, OR, and NOT), Perl compatible regexp option, Built in file viewer, Word, Excel and PDF searching, Open Office, Word Perfect option using IFilters, Unicode support, support for: ZIP, RAR, CAB, 7-Zip, ARJ, Bzip, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, GZIP, HFS, ISO, LZH, MSI, NSIS, RPM, TAR, UDF, WIM, XAR, Z formats, Active Scripting support, Export as Text, CSV, XML, HTML, or XSLT custom format, File attribute searching , Relative date/time searches, Repositionable contents pane, Search within search, Exclude folders list,+ etc

You might try the freeware EasyFind. It allows boolean and wildcard searches. How many of the other features in your "wish list" it offers I haven't checked. If EasyFind doesn't offer sufficient power, take a look at FoxTrot Personal Search or FoxTrot Professional Search.
And of course there's always grep which can be incredibly powerful once you learn all its ins and outs.

  • Can't find Akai samples on Hard drive after EXS 24 Mk II conversion

    Hi,
I've recently acquired a large Akai sound library on CD and have imported them onto my Mac Pro via the converter in the EXS 24 Mk II. They show up fine in the EXS Library, but I can't find them anywhere on the hard disk, and I want to remove them and re install them into smaller subfolders, ie, Violins, Flutes etc, rather than just Orchestra.
Everything I've read says that the samples should be in a folder called Akai samples, located in Library/Application Support/Logic. No such folder is showing.
It doesn't make any difference whether I use the 'save converted instruments to sub folder' option or not, they are nowhere to be seen, outside of the EXS library.
I've tried it on both my machines, both running 10.7.5, Logic 9.1.8. (Logic is running in 32 bit mode during the conversion)
Anyone else had this or know a cure??
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Jonny
    I

Well, I thought that'd cleared it up, but apparently not! The only way I can see the AKAI Samples folder is when using the Reveal in Finder function in the EXS 24. A normal Finder/Spotlight search will not show it, even after re indexing the drive. I can only assume that this is something to do with the fact that the file conversion can only take place through the EXS 24, therefore it doesn't register as existing outside of that... Can this really be? If you go back through the file hierarchy to Library (through the EXS) the Library icon is greyed out too, and double clicking it will not open the library folder. At least I know how to get to it now anyway.

  • What Orchestral samples for EXS?

I am looking for a decent but simple set of orchestral samples to use for EXS to complement the existing set supplied in the LPX download. I do not intend to spend a lot of money on a complicated item of software, I already have EWQSO andfind it is too power hungry and slow to use, which inhibits the creative process. I do not want to use Kontakt, and ralise this probably limits what is available. However it would be intersting to know what others are using for EXS ?

Unfortunately the range of such orchestral Libs for EXS24 is extremely limited and basically non existant.......
Most musicians creating Orchestral Mockups in a DAW use Kontakt and any of the excellent 3rd party Libraries available... (Spitfire Audio, CineSamples, LASS etc) and/or Vienna Symphonic Libraries...
The reality is... If you don't spend the money on the right libs.. and you dont put the effort into learning/using them...  then you probably won't get the results or work flow you wish.....
However, depending on the quality of samples you need, some people use Garritan's low price Orchestral sample library.... when they cannot afford to take the Kontakt/VSL route...
    http://www.garritan.com/products/personal-orchestra-4/
.Note: EWQL Play Libs do tend to be somewhat unstable and power hungry under OS X as you have found... but can be utilized if you resort to bouncing/freezing tracks... when composing.

  • Most Authentic Orchestra Sampler

I am somwhat new to Logic. I'm scoring a film and don't have the time or budget for a real orchestra. However, I would like to invest in a $500-$700 range orchestra sampler. What's the best out there and what are some tips for making it sound real (as in best space designer setting etc.)

Congrats on your film score opportunity!
Yours is a hard question to answer because you haven't mentioned what style your score is going to be. Overall, are you looking for a big sound or an intimate sound? Those kinds of things... And every orchestral library will have its strengths and weaknesses.
If you want to get by on the cheap, get Garritan Personal Orchestra. $249. It's got its own learning curve (stock programs aren't velocity sensitive to volume -- you have to ride the mod wheel to control dynamics) but IMO you're not going to achieve the huge, glorious "Hollywood" string or brass ensembles from that collection.
Haven't tried it, but there's the MOTU symphonic instrument as well.
Another way to go would be get some Akai-based orchestral CD-ROMs (these can be translated into EXS24 format -- without the need for additional conversion software). Same goes for Gigasampler (to a limited extent). Some of these CD-ROMs are relatively inexpensive. So right off the bat you have the Peter Seidlaczek stuff, Kirk Hunter, and other string libraries to choose from.

  • MSI Big Bang-XPower II More MB RAM than the CPU can handle...

I understand reading in a few forum post :" By making more memory available to the system more data can be cached in RAM, so there will be less hard drive activity, and less swapping to memory so your system will perform better." But what happen when motherboard for a desktop that supports( and had install) more RAM than the processor can handle?(aka:processor Max Memory Size).
Please comment in this configuration.as I 'm looking for a MB than offer me the more SATA6 connection i found a few available using LGA2011 socket (MSI Big Bang-XPower II LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6GB/s USB 3.0 XL ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS) than support 128GB. As I understand the processor Intel® Core™ i7-3930K Processor only work with 64GB.
Is there any advantage to have a MB that hold a bigger RAM capacity than the CPU? If so, how can this be translate using in a program like Adobe After Effects, RAM preview? thank

More Memory doe's not make it faster as its Volatile Memory (more RAM but it has to be run at much slower speeds) that is very short term and is just a buffer for active Programs and files it Caches there while its active but in no way improves system speed (as it has to be clocked slower to allow the IMC on the CPU to cope with it)! more memory just allows more Active Large programs and files open at the same time and huge amount of ram will only really be of benefit for things like Video Editing, photo editing and 3D rendering as those take alot of ram to allow all the computations that the CPU does to be held for quick access but only when they are active!
having more RAM then your CPU can Handel is a VERY BAD IDEA as it will just refuse to even post or in very rare cases damage the CPU's IMC leading to a dead CPU!
why MSI have done that is for possible later 2011 CPU's that may allow the 128GB of RAM limit to be used but currently they do not exist currently as X79 is a more professional grade Platform that will probably be around for years to come (may be used for many upgrade cycles and may eventually have a cpu that can use 128GB or ram) and who knows what will happen with Intel CPU's in that time frame! (more of a possible forward compatibility thing as its a very high end platform)
as for after effects it uses RAM for  holding Render Files so in theory more ram will just allow it to render Larger files that are more complex without hitting the Available Ram ceiling that your computer has but it will not render any faster as a result it just gives it more headroom to work in!
so overall more ram = more Active space available & no increase in speed (actually maybe a drop in speed as it needs to run slower causing LAG/Latency) so it all depends what is important to you here to whether more ram is of any benefit or just a hindrance but that is down to your own use case scenario!

My wife and I share a computer for our itunes accounts. How can we copy our music libraries to each others accounts without erasing the original library? We want to merge our songs.

If the music is on the same computer, import the songs to your iTunes library by dragging them into iTunes or choosing File > Add to Library (Mac) or File > Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library (Windows).  If the music is on different computers you can set up Home Sharing to copy the music from one library to the other (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4620).

Yes, add them to iTunes. The fact that they are on an external doesn't stop them from being in iTunes.
If necessary, create a separate library which you just use when you have the external connected.
Alternatively, if you have an iPhone or iPad you could check out an App like Air Video, which displays video that isn't in iTunes on your device. I think you can then use Airplay to get it onto your ATV.

    Dear Discussion Folks,
Thank you all so much for your help. I think I understand now, as a result of your comments and this reply from NVIDIA customer support:
"I understand from your mail that you would like to know if GeForce FX 5200 Ultra supports your monitor that has a recommended digital resolution of 1920 x 1200.Please be informed that as per the NVIDIA records, the maximum digital resolution supported by this graphics card is 1600 x 1200 and the maximum analog resolution supported by this graphics card is 2048 x 1536. Since you have mentioned in your e-mail that the Apple's specs page says that the maximum digital resolution supported by this graphics card is 1920 x 1200, in this case, I request you to contact Apple Support over phone and get confirmed on this. The reason why I am requesting you to contact Apple is because, we at NVIDIA, manufacture only the basic chipsets for the graphics cards and sell them to Apple Computers. The Apple Computers produce the graphics cards using the NVIDIA chipsets."
This reassured me that there's no reason to worry about the appearance of a contradiction between the Apple tech sheet and the NVIDIA tech sheet. I went ahead and ordered this monitor today: the DoubleSIght DS- 265W.
(by the way, sorry about typing 1900x1200 when I meant 1920x1200).
After it arrives in a week or two, I'll update this thread to confirm that its resolution is supported by the GeForce FX 5200 Ultra card.
    Thanks again,

  • My ibook can handle which videoformat?

First of all, please excuse me for any mistakes in my written English, as it is not my main language.
    So here I go:
Now that I've upgraded my ibook tangerine with a 120GB harddrive, I want to store some movies on it in a format that my ibook can handle.
I will use my macbook to rip a few dvd's and convert it to the proper videoformat, but the question is, which videoformat? I suppose that my ibook can't handle divx, xvid and plain dvd's.
My aim is to be able to watch some tv series on my ibook (ripped from my dvd-collection), that's all, it doesn't have to be high quality, just watchable and without, if possible, frame drops.
Can anyone point me to the right direction?
    Thanks in advance!
    iBook Tangerine 300Mhz, 120GB HD, 128Mb Ram   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Macbook (Black), 2.0GHz, 2GB Ram, 80GB HD

I've installed the freeware video player VLC on my daughter's 300mhz tangerine iBook, there is an option to drop frames.
She plays movies right from the harddisk (CD is too slow)
Her first option is to use the old MPEG1 Format (VCD 320x240pixels. The compression and Quality is low, so there are only a few dropped frames and you can watch your movie flawlessly.
On the other hand we tried to play movies in MPEG4 Format (464x368 pixels). For the first 10 seconds you will see nothing but a scrambled screen, but all of the sudden the movie shows up and you will be able to watch the scene (with several dropped frames, but not too bad)
If you use the pause function, you have to wait for 10 more seconds before the film continues, don't use the fast forward key....
Hope this helps. If you'll find a perfect solution in between, I'll be glad to hear from you.
