No matter what i do i cant extend my network??

Okay so i brought an Apple Express basestation brandnew from Apple about 4 months ago that I am using as my basestation. I have been able to acess my internet etc all without an issue via various devices in the house such as my 10.6.8 iMac, 10.5.? Mac Mini, and my iPad, as well as other devices like the PS3, my Acer phone and an Asus Vista desktop (the latter with a wireless card)
I brought another express second hand but only about a year old to extend the range of the network and no matter what setting I use it will not extend the range. I have ensured that the express I am using as the main gateway have the extend this network box checked. I have also tried setting up the secondary express to "join my existing network" (which does everything you would expect this setting to do) and also "extend my current network" which is where issues arise such as it slipping in and out of visibility on the Airport Utility.
I even tried setting it up using the WDS system and that yeilded no results at all, this was the only time that none of the computers/devices would connect.
The only reasons that I can think of that would make it not work are these questions:
Does the gateway to the modem have to be an airport extreme/time capsule, or is the express fine for this?
Does the secondary express have to have to be hardwired to the gateway express? Which obvioulsy isnt going to happen
Do you have any other ideas? Would swapping the two expresses around so the one that i want to be the secondary is actually the primary gateway and viseversa or is that a wasted exercise? I am familiar with all of those posters that comment here a lot and thank you for your tips. Have tried all of the stuff you have mentioned time and time again! I spent about 3 hours trying and retrying various configurations last night and again this morning after switching off every device in the household over night.
the original express runs seamlessly, and if i bring the devices closer to the original they work perfectly. the secondary one is just like a washed out bridge, its there and does part of what you need, but not completely usefull without all of it!

Ok, here's another set of step-by-step instructions for configuring an extended network. Please give them a try to be sure you didn't miss anything.
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

Just open System Preferences>Users & Groups and unlock the preference pane with your root password.
Set the New Account to be an Administrator and fill in the rest of the data and then click "Create User".
I would suggest using this user to be YOU with admin capabilities. I wouldn't use the root user - too much damage could occur if you're not sure what you're doing. If you have files, etc., that you want to move to this account, simply but them in the Shared folder - or if you 'rescued' some old files and the like from your 'trashed' MBP, you can put them in your NEW admin account folders.

Express cant extend wireless network

I have a Airport Exteme which I use as my wireless base-station. For two years I used an Express to extend the network wirelessly. It worked fine but this week it died so I gought a new one.
However I can not wirelessely extend the wireless network using this new Airport Express. It works fine using an ethernet cable but this isnt covnenent. The issue is when I get to the screen that says "Select the Apple wireless device you want to extend. If you are not sure click Identify. If your Apple wireless device is not on the list click Scan Again". The list is empty no matter how many times I hit rescan.
Am I missing something?

I have a new Motorola dsl modem/wireless router...replaced after a lightning strike. I have a Time Capsule and Airport Express. They can join the network, but not extend the network which is something that must happen in my home. Would you (anyone) disable the wireless setup in the Motorola and use the Time Capsule as the main base station, then using one or more airport expresses as the extenders OR install a Linksys range expander and use the time capsule and airport express for print servers, Xbox gaming etc?
My goal is to extend the range of my wireless in the most sensible way and apparently I can't use what I have.

Would you (anyone) disable the wireless setup in the Motorola and use the Time Capsule as the main base station, then using one or more airport expresses as the extenders OR install a Linksys range expander and use the time capsule and airport express for print servers, Xbox gaming etc?
If you don't already have the Linksys Range Extender, I would suggest going with the first option that you bring up.
In this scenario, you would do the following:
o Disable the wireless radio on the Motorola Gateway (combination modem/router) but leave its primary router functions (NAT & DHCP) enabled.
o Connect the Time Capsule (TC) directly to the Motorola Gateway by Ethernet.
o Reconfigure the TC as a bridge. This will allow the Motorola to provide the NAT & DHCP services for the entire network so that wired or wireless clients connected to any of the routers will get Internet access.
o Reconfigure the TC and AirPort Express Base Station (AX) into a "dynamic" WDS. (Note: I am assuming that your AX is the newer 802.11n version.
In this overall configuration, both the TC & AX retain their functionality for providing an extended wireless network, as well as, provide for the sharing of hard drives and/or printers to the network clients.

iPhone 5S V 8.1.2, working exactly as outlined on many forums. I mean its perfect both systems, its all ON and dialed. Worse Airdrop was working and I NEED it bad now, but no matter how many times I reboot the iphone or the computer I cant get it back.
Also the microphone i the text messages is gone but oddly its appearing only in some of my text contacts and then can disappear again, soooooo frustrating!!!

Thanks for the question. Can you provide additional details as to why recovery mode is not working for you? Alternatively, you can use iCloud and Find my iPhone to erase your device:

If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer
If you see one of following alerts, you need to erase the device:
"iTunes could not connect to the [device] because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the [device] before it can be used with iTunes."
"You haven't chosen to have [device] trust this computer"
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
5. iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

Help with extending a network using AirPort Express

I am UK based and have BT Infinity Internet connection. I have a BT NTE which provides an ethernet connection for my home network. I have an AirPort Express 2nd Gen setup to provide initial router etc with the local LAN port connected to a 24 port gigabit switch. I have structured cabling providing ethernet ports in each room.
PC's etc are configured as fixed IP in the rooms they are in and connect via ethernet, however, my wifi (because of the construction of the house) is very poor especially upstairs and at the back of the house.
I have setup a second AirPort Express at the back of the house connected via the ethernet port, assigned a static IP, configured bridge mode, and setup Extended Network. However, my internal network is now very flacky, wifi keeps dropping out, Internet access for all devices is up and down, in short, it's unusable. However, If I use the second AirPort Express in Join a Network mode it appears to be more stable!
So Q1 - What is the difference between Extend a Network (via ethernet) and Join a Network (via ethernet) and what are the benefits of both? (which one should I be using?)
and Q2 - assuming Q1 is Extend a Network is the correct way to go, can someone please explain in complete detail the exact process and configuration for this to work effectively? If I can extend correctly I am looking at adding a third AirPort Express in the garage so I have wifi access in the garden and in the garage.

I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2. But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work. What does happen is my internet gets blocked somehow when the Express is online and looks like it's set up perfect and 'green' - but no internet connection for anything even though the Extreme is green and the modem is good. Once I disconnect the Express, everything is good again.
I've tried LAN, WAN, though a switch, direct connect, Extreme set to Extend the network, the Express set to be an extension. Most of the time I get an error trying to update the Express. But when it seems to be set up perfect, the entire house can't get to the internet. Just when it looks right, it is so wrong.
If anyone can give me exact steps (e.g., "...from the Base Station menu, select the Restore Default Setting option" vice "...just restore the defaults..."), I would greatly appreciate it. I'm left to the conclusion that the Express is faulty. I've been using Airport Utility 6.2 from Mountain Lion on one computer and Airport Utility 5.6.1 from Snow Leopard on another computer (the latter give more control while the former just want you to 'forget' the Express).

I finally got it working. I was trying to set it up ethernet. My biggest mistake was when the new Express came on, I did not select 'Continue' - I went straight to manual thinking that I would get the most setup options in manual mode. So everything I initially tried always resulted in 'wireless'. Even when I would update or restore default settings, the Express would not completely restart. Or sometimes I would get an error. So most of the time I had to unplug it. So when it came back up, none of my changes were retained. But there were a lot of times when everything was green and appeared to be fine. But anytime the ethernet cable was plugged in, no more internet.
So here's the weird part. When I finally tried 'continue' (vice manual), I would get 4 options. One would be 'ethernet' extended. So I would select it, it gave me green lights, all looked good, and still the same problem. This is when I got frustrated. I thought I had exhausted all possible combinations.
But somehow when trying continue again after another restore, I only got 3 options. One was the same ethernet extended option (can't remember what the missing 4th one was). And this time it worked - it gave me the big green circle with the checkmark saying it was successful. I don't know what I did different, but I know now that it won't work if 4 options come up to choose from. It will work if only 3 options come up. And success if only verified by the big checkmark. Had anyone anywhere said the checkmark declaring success is validation, then maybe I wouldn't have gone down so many rabbit holes thinking it should have been successful.
As for which Airport Utility I prefer, 6.2 looks nice, but it would just ignore the Express and would want me to 'forget' it and would not let me edit it. Airport Utility 5.6.1 was the one that I ended up using the most and finally had success with. It still strikes me as odd that there is no manually way to pick ethernet, it can only be choosen following a 'restore defaults', and only from the 3-option list (the 4-option list had the same ethernet choice, but it no worky).

Using Airport 5.6.1
1) Restore Defaults from Base Station menu
2) Following restart, Select Continue
3) Of the 3 option presented, select 'ethernet.... extend network...'
- if 4 options are present, may not work
4) Wait for the green circle with the big white checkmark.
5) Connected Express to the switch where a cable went to other end of house - works.
Dead-zone went from 2mbps to 24mbps.
I probably spent 4 hours chasing my tail in anger. The correct way took about 5 minutes total.

Update: While I didn't answer the question above, I did manage to fix my problem. Here is the background: My old Nook was a Nook Color, which, while it was greatly loved and semi-intelligent, it wasn't a tablet. When I connected it to my computer, it was recognized as a device and showed up in Digital Editions. My library uses Overdrive to handle the borrowing and download/reading functions. When you borrow a book, you downloaded it to your computer, opened it in Digital Editions, and then did a "drag and drop" into your Nook. I had assumed that when I got my new Samsung Galaxy Tab Nook, it would work the same way. I had not adjusted my thinking to realize that the Tab is a true computer with an operating system (Android) such as that on my laptop. I was trying to fix the problem with the DRM authorization using every other ePub reader that I could find (installing the app and then attempting to open the book) and nothing worked. I finally got a message that clicked saying "You do not have rights to open this book" rather than the unhelpful message that I got from Digital Editions saying "Error! Check Authorization". I looked at my library's website and caught the notification that Overdrive has an app. I downloaded and installed it, connected to my library, logged in using my library card number and everything was there. Now, instead of downloading to my laptop and then moving the book to my Nook, I directly connect to my library's website and download the book to my Galaxy Tab. I could read directly in my browser (provided I was connected to the internet) but downloading ensures that I can read the book in any situation.
This absolutely does not fix the problem in the question above, nor does it answer why my old method worked for exactly two and a half books and then stopped working, but at least I learned something and I have a solution that means my Galaxy Tab can be used for the primary function of my old Nook, that of packing library books with me no matter where I am in a lightweight, easily read format.
