No more date in the Apple menu bar with OSX 10.5.6

What is for me a glaring omission from both windows and Mac is the option to show the current date. The trick described at http://cybernetnews.com/2008/05/22/cybernotes-add-the-date-to-mac-menubar-clock/ however worked perfect. Until now... Unfortunately, it looks like with OSX 10.5.6 this no longer works. The behaviour when you have the date components in the time configured is odd: at first the top-right system menus seems to behave normal, eg when you click the airport option. But when you move the mouse down to select a menu item, the menu closes quickly on you and leaves the air tunes menu marked blue. Similar things happen with Time Machine and other system menus; rendering the top-right menu practically useless. Switching back (via Preferences to -in my case- Dutch system setting) will remove the date from the clock and restore the menu to normal behaviour.
Does anybody know a nice little date utility for in the menu bar that works with 10.5.6 ? Thanks !

I have no issues using the trick described in that method. Something is likely wrong with your system. It's also possible that the issue is specific to the Dutch localization.
either way, try resetting your time display preferences
enter the following terminal command
rm ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
then log out/in. Your time display will be reset to the default. change it again using the method in that link.

    Try to edit the size of the page using the sides of the page, or if you are desperate, force quit using command-Q. In full screen put your cursor on the top of the page, and the menu bar will appear. If it doesn't keep "pushing" it up until it does. Hope this helps!

  • Lost most of the Apple Menu items with 10.8.5

    I have only
    About This Mac
    Force Quit...
    Sleep
    Log Out (User)...
    The Finder starts up as Simple Finder, I have to select Run Full FInder to get the full Finder back but it does not reactivate the Apple Menu items.
    After restarting the computer the Finder again opens as Simple Finder.
    Root has access to the normal Apple Menu items.
    Please someone give me some advice
    Thanks

    Part of your problem, at least, is that you're in single-application mode.
    Back up all data.
    I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    defaults delete com.apple.dock single-app && killall Dock
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign ("$"). You can then quit Terminal. Test.

  • My apple menu bar is missing-how do I get it back??

    My husband has a MacBook Pro (I'd provide iOS info here, but since the apple menu is not there I can't access the "About" option!), and the apple menu bar at the top of the screen disappeared while he was using the computer.  He was trying to access iTunes (which he said was acting a little "weird") and shortly thereafter the menu disappeared.  We've checked System Preferences and can't figure out how to get the menu back.  The launch pad at the bottom of the screen was not affected.  Any help would be appreciated…thanks!

    Did you try rebooting the machine?

  • Displaying iTunes radio information in Apple Menu Bar

    I know that you can get software and plug-ins which show song information etc in the Apple Menu Bar so you don't have to keep switching back to iTunes to see what is being played - but can this be done for radio broadcast information? The software I've seen - Barquee, Quick Tunes, My Tunes etc - only appears to work for stuff being played on CD or from your iTunes Library? I want to be able to see the song title and artist information that appears in the iTunes menu bar. Is a problem caused by scrolling information?
    Any suggestions gratefully received so I can listen to Aural Moon without having to constantly switch between applications!

    Streams do not always contain the appropriate tag information for display by these utilities, so it may be out of your control to display.
    I use "youcontrol" from You Software. Its "ticker" display works well, but I can't test with Aural Moon to see if it works with their stream.

  • Apple Menu Bar once clicked would also open other menu bars

    Hello! I would like to receive some advice about this particular problem. The Mac is 4 months old. Description of the problem: Once the Mac starts and I click the apple menu bar, the drop down menu would open and so are the other menu bars i.e. the file, edit, view, help etc. The menu bars will drop one after another non-stop. This problem also affects when opening files in Finder. The chosen file, once clicked will not open but it will revert back to the documents main folder. I hope you can help me with this. Thank you very much.

    Hi! Thanks a lot! I tried your suggestions but the problem persists. Further description: It happens only when the computer is set to automatic log-in mode. I observed that if I hit any keys from the keyboard just before doing anything else after start-up, the "problem" disappears.

    Could be a third party app preventing you from being able to login.
    Mac App Store: Sign in sheet does not appear, or does not accept typed text
    If it's not a third party issue, follow the instructions here.
    Quit the MAS if it's open.
    Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left then open the Library folder then the Caches folder.
    Move the com.apple.appstore and the com.apple.storeagent files from the Caches folder to the Trash
    From the same Library folder open the Preferences folder.
    Move these files Preferences folder to the Trash: com.apple.appstore.plist and com.apple.storeagent.plist
    Same Library folder open the Cookies folder. Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch the MAS.

    Ive bought Apple TV and upgrade my macbook air Os X ver 10.8.2 but i could not see the airplay on the top menu bar . please help! thank you.

    The ability to use AirPlay is BOTH an OS requirement(Mountain Lion) AND has hardware requirements.  You need to check and see if your 2010 Air will support Airplay.

  • Apple Menu Bar Icons Gone on the Right

    I am having some problems with my Apple Menu Bar on the right hand side (no clock, no volume, no eject except for Sophos). I was very pleased to see Michael Conniff's solution here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5550238&#5550238). Unfortunately, it didn't work for me... I even logged in as a different (admin) user and still nothing in the menu bar, except for Sophos.
    It wasn't just a matter of switching them on in System Preferences. I also tried the coreservices/Menu Extra trick (which used to work for the eject menu) but it doesn't want to play.
    I have a G4 Dual 800, running 10.4.11. I think it only just started over a week ago and the only thing I did was to do a Software Update.
    Any solutions anyone please?

    Hi BDAqua, thanks for the reply. I did exactly what you said; unfortunately I only got to the installing Combo update bit, when I got a message saying the installation had failed after about 10 minutes into it, then the machine won't restart - it just went into a restart mode every time I tried to shutdown. I did several hard restarts, I got stuck every time as soon as the the Mac OS X screen came on. I have never had a problem like this before and could only suggest the OS got corrupted at some point.
    I am starting from the 10.4.3 DVD and reinstalling a fresh copy of the OS, hopefully it will be alright after the 10.4.11 update.
    Don't get me wrong BDAqua, I am not complaining, it is just one of those things; I do appreciate you took the time in replying and suggesting a solution to help, thanks.

  • Is there any way to disable the mouse-over function of the Spry Menu Bar (CS5)? Click-open preferred

    Hello,
    I'm using the standard CS5 Spry Menu Bar (Horizontal) in Dreamweaver. I have it set up exactly the way I want with CSS. However, I've very little experience with Javascript, consequently I'd like to ask anyone here for some help in modifying this aspect of the Spry Menu Bar. I'd like it to 'click-open' and not open when the mouse is over it. I've tried to change the delay variables in the code to something that has a longer duration in milliseconds; unfortunately, this tends to cause some bugs such as the menu re-opening once the mouse is no longer near it and other such bugs.
    The ideal solution for me would be to have it open when it's clicked on once. The reason I need this is because the menu appears over some buttons - there's no way around this for me, it's the layout I absolutely must have. Although the buttons don't overlap with the menu, they are very close and it is annoying when your hand slips a little and the menu pops up over it all.
    I'd appreciate any help at all, thank you.
    PS:- The Javascript containing the delay variables I tried to modify.
    Spry.Widget.MenuBar.prototype.init = function(element, opts)
        this.element = this.getElement(element);
        // represents the current (sub)menu we are operating on
        this.currMenu = null;
        this.showDelay = 250;
        this.hideDelay = 600;
        if(typeof document.getElementById == 'undefined' || (navigator.vendor == 'Apple Computer, Inc.' && typeof window.XMLHttpRequest == 'undefined') || (Spry.is.ie && typeof document.uniqueID == 'undefined'))
            // bail on older unsupported browsers
            return;
        // Fix IE6 CSS images flicker
        if (Spry.is.ie && Spry.is.version < 7){
            try {
                document.execCommand("BackgroundImageCache", false, true);
            } catch(err) {}

    Hello,
    Thank you so much for replying so quickly and moreover, solving my problem. I must apologise for not doing more research about this issue by searching these forums more thoroughly. I found a similar post here:-
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/139937#139937
    Your solution goes one step further and eliminates the need to search through the Javascript for the relevant code.
    Thank you again, you've helped me a great deal.
    Best wishes,
    foreverdusty.

  • Date and time in menu bar

    Hi everyone,
    I'm having a very silly problem that is driving me crazy. I found similar problems on this forum but not exactly the answer to them.
    The "Show date and time in menu bar" checkbox System Preferences will not remain checked. I have checked it 50 times but every time I close it and go back it's unchecked.
    Based on some suggestions on the forum I check the SystemUIServer in Activity Monitor and it's hanging (i.e. Not Responding). I tried force quitting and restarting but it doesn't get it going. Somehow I think these two problems are related.
    I also tried deleting the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file under ~/Library/Preferences and logging out and back in to go back to system defaults on the menu bar but that didn't work either.
    Alot of people solved similar problems by installing OS X 10.5.2 but I'm already running 10.5.2! I'm running out of ideas here.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Excuse me, my interface is in Dutch and I literally translated the name.
    Desktop and Screen saver I believe, select the menu for the screen saver.
    There is a box you can tick, it will display the time when the screen saver is running.
    It could be displayed like 3553 instead of the correct time.
    If that is the case check in another user account, or make a new user account in Apple menu>System preferences>Accounts. Does the problem occur in the new account as well?

  • Date and Time on Menu Bar

    Up until now the date and time has been displayed on the menu bar as...
    Tuesday, November 28, 2006 8:09 AM
    Now, for some reason, it's being displayed as...
    Tue 8:09 AM
    Here's what I've tried in trying to restore the format...
    1) System Preferences > Menu Bar Clock > Show Date and Time in Menu Bar
    2) Deleted the following preference files:
    com.apple.MenuBarClock.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    Does anyone know how I can restore the format?
    Thanks!
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   128 MB, 700 MHz PowerPC G4

    It looks like there can be as little
    as 6 or so characters between the two sets of
    icons
    That sounds low, especially in
    the Finder, even at the lower screen resolutions. I
    just played with stepping down resolutions on this
    Mac, and various right-side icons (the CoreServices
    eject.menu, Display, Classic, and sound icons, plus
    those from MenuMeters) disappeared
    before the date and time (shown as "Tue 28 Nov, 04:00
    PM" were affected (right-side menu items are
    truncated from left to right).
    In my case, just the date disappeared. So instead of seeing...
    Tue November 28, 2006 5:43 PM
    ...I was seeing...
    Tue 5:43 PM
    The icons to the left (on the right side icons) were still there and unaffected.
    What Display
    resolution do you normally use?
    It's set at 1024 X 768.
    Does the time&date
    format go back to the expected form if you increase
    resolution to maximum as a test? If the format
    affected by starting up in Safe Mode?
    After trying the remedy you reference in your previous post, the format is back to where it was so I won't be able to test it. But I guess you suspect that the Date and Time was truncated because there wasn't enough space between the left side and right side icons, is this right? It would seem like a logical explanation...
