No more Mac Pro, Apple you're killing me

I waited 6 years where I work to get a Mac. We finally did and my work life put me on cloud 9. Have been a Mac user my whole life.  I do audio production for TV and work on about 5 projects a day. I work on news stories, 5 minute documentary testimonies, 30 min weekly shows, and even 2 hour productions. I have Nuendo, Final Cut and Premiere open ALL DAY. My Mac Pro just keeps on chugging along all day, no worries. The big highlight of my life is I wrote over 90 Applescripts and use 20 EVERYDAY. These Mac feature really allows me to go home without a headache or carpal tunnel.
With Apple killing the Mac Pro, my workplace will be forced to go back to using PC's............I am seriously thinking about changing my career.  My output will decrease. Stress will go up because I wont have automation to mount servers, rename files and move files. Servers will become 144.33.65.1 instead of "VideoTape".  I thought the death of Steve was bad, this is even worse. I've been a loyal Mac advacate since 1988. Just got my 1st iPhone. I have converted so many people to the Mac. I love my 17" Macbook Pro, I do Lightwave 3D, Motion, FCP, and so many other things on it. My work life is headed for the toilet. Crash........Crash........Crash.............wait.........I have to manually retype all the file names in this production.  My stomach is churning just thinking out it.
Ouch. Thanks Apple.

I'm in the video industry, so I share your concerns.
However, Apple has not yet done or said anythng. All that's happened is Apple Insider has reported on a rumour to (succesfully) stir the pot and get some page views. No-one knows anything.
In a few years when you can get a thunderbolt 4 slot PCI box, hook it up to a macbook pro, and you have the functional equivalent of a mac pro, then maybe it goes away. But I don't think that day is today.
Well, I hope not.

  • Mac Pro Apple TV connection...

Why doesnt my Mac Pro have the apple TV icon activated on the top of screen? I am unable to mirror my Mac Pro through my Apple TV.. Friends were over the other day and suggested I update the operating system.. So I have update to OS Mountain Lion 10.2.. (latest).. But still no joy... However  if I open Itunes I can play my music through the apple TV...

Is your macbook pro early 2011 or newer?  If not it won't support mirror and you would need a third party app such as www.airparrot.com

  • Migration to Mac Pro , can you do it from a hard drive?

I guess if it is not an SATA drive it's a no go but what about and external case?

You have both the choice of installing it into an external FireWire enclosure or installing it into the 2nd optical drive bay as Hatter mentions. Unless you're intending to keep it inside your Mac Pro it'll be better to put it into an external enclosure?
By the way, you can always leave it in the Mac it came out of and connect to that computer via FireWire Target Disk Mode…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
… else simple simple network sharing.
If you're intending to use the Migration Assistant then the need to boot from it is not required.

  • Radeon HD 3870 coming to a Mac Pro near you?

    http://www.macrumors.com/2008/04/29/ati-radeon-hd-3870-video-card-for-the-mac-pr o-in-may/
could be a more viable option than the 8800 card for pro apps that use core graphics, also these cards are pretty energy efficient so a couple of these installed should not put too much strain on the system

What are you using these cards for? Do you need more than two monitors? If you are using Final Cut Studio at all, go with the single 4870 video card. Final Cut only supports two monitors, and often has issues if more than one video card is installed, especially if they are the exact same make and model.
If you really (really) need to run 3-4 displays (my only guess as to why you would need three GT120s) you could try the Radeon 3870 (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435928/) as they only require one auxiliary power tap each and take up a single PCIe slot. That would give you four DVI outputs, while using up only two slots, with the only downside being they are a bit noisy. There are some quiet cooling options you might be able to find that could help that. The 4870 is still your best option though, if you are at all concerned about performance, noise, reliability, and compatibility.

I just bought a new iPhone, I don't know new phone's ID and password. how can I find them? Because I can't dwonload anything.

You don't. Can you get into the iPhone at all or is it asking for a 4 digit passcode when you turn it on?
Edit: Reread your subject. So to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Settings and Content. After that set it up on your computer as a new iPhone and it will transfer you Apple ID

Can some-one let me know how to get mobile internet with teltra working on mac pro.
Teltra could help me as they can't fix it and asked me to contact apple. The mobile device is working on all other computer (windows) but not Mac Pro

By contact Apple they mean AppleCare over the phone. This is the user forums, so no one from Apple will be able to assist you. AppleCare's phone number is (800)-APL-CARE (800-275-2273) for the United States.

  • How do i connect my Fujitsu Tablet + mac Pro to Apple Cinema Display 23'?

    Dear Mac users
thanks in advance for your help.
    I currently own:
    • Fujitsu T 4220 (tablet) – Mobile Intel 965 Express – 60 Hertz – goes up to 1680*1050 (guess SXGA) – (it has the following other supported resolutions: 1400*1050, 1280*1024, 1280*768, 1280*720, 1024*768, and 800*600)
    • Mac Pro
    • Apple Cinema Display 23’
What I would like to do is, please refer to the jpeg posted on http://www.flickr.com/photos/34831802@N06/3234336204/, connect – at the same time – my tablet pc and my Mac Pro to the 23' Apple Cinema Display and switch (when I need) from tablet to MacPro using the same 23’ ACD. Top would be to be able to switch for one to the other while they’re both switched on. Usually on 2 pc’s with vga I’d use a switch A → B (in the jpeg it would be I → E) with a selector.
Have been reading different posts such as: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8000641&#8000641 or http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6530475&#6530475 or

+ others on the net and have (hopefully) understood that:
    a) from Vga to Dvi I need a converter such as Geffen’s or similar
    b) the problem with ACD 23’ is that it has only 3 resolutions: 1024*640, 1280*800 or 1920*1200
In the attached image I guessed a connection in order to connect – at the same time – both the machines to the 23’ ACD:
    1) my fujitsu tablet (i in the image) has to be connected, with a Vga cable (h), to the Vga → Dvi converter (g).
    2) from the Vga → Dvi converter (g) I need to connecto to the Dvi switch (c)
    3) easier is connecting the Mac Pro (e), since I only need a Dvi cable (d) to connecto to the Dvi switch (c)
    4) the Dvi switch (c) will then be connected to the 23’ ACD with a Dvi cable
    Now, my questions are:
    a) is the solution described above (Vga cable (h) to the Vga → Dvi converter (g)) a good solution or should I use, instead, a docking statione that comes with a Fujitsu Port Replicator (FPCPR65) which has a 1 x DVI-D port?
    b) Given the 3 resolution accepted by the 23’ ACD (1024*640, 1280*800 or 1920*1200), I do not understand if I can use my tablet through a Vga to Dvi Converter and at which resolution (my tablet has the following other supported resolutions: 1680*1050, 1400*1050, 1280*1024, 1280*768, 1280*720, 1024*768, and 800*600).
    c) Is there a way, also using an external video card or converter, to bring my resolution from 1680*1050 to 1920*1200? (the 16:10 ratio is in fact the same = WXGA (1280x800), WXGA+ (1440x900), WSXGA+ (1680x1050), WUXGA (1920x1200)
    d) Talking about Vga → Dvi converter (g), am aware of the gefen product. Can you please list some others that might be good as well?
    e) And how about the DVI switch? Any will work? Any particular suggestion?
Thank you very much for your help.
If you have any other suggestion, please let me know.
    Regards,
    Emil

    Noone to help me?
    No ideas?
    Thanks,

  • New Mac Pro and Apple Cinema Display

Warning, for those of you upgrading to the new Mac Pro and you plan on using your old Cinema Display, you will not get the maximum resolution out of the display. In fact, you only get 1650 x 800--which of course is way under utilizing install resources and on top of that not a great picture. Even using recommended set up (mini display to DVI adaptor) does not help. You need a Thunderbolt Display for best video performance. Unless someone out there knows a way to do this--be prepared also to buy a new display.

Turbostar, it is the Apple 30 inch cinema display. Yes it works but the max resolution is 1650 X 800 which while acceptable does not get me 2560 x 1600 which my D500 GBUs would deliver. The new Pro is optimized for a Thunderbolt display, I am using the correct  connection protocols as recommended by Apple on their web page for this system. There is a specific note in Apple support noted that Cinema displays will only  provide xxxx resolution on the new Mac Pro's. Corsair.

  • Can you marry a thunderbolt display to a early 2008 mac pro?

can  you marry a thunderbolt display to an early 2008 mac pro?

You will need a DUAL-LINK DVI cable for that display.
    <http://www.amazon.com/DVI-D-Male-Dual-Link-Cable/dp/B003QNDEGA>
Your video card is designed to run two 30" displays, but is getting old.  Cards that age do fail due to bad capacitors, bad solder, of stuck fans.

  • Mac Pros extra two internal sata ports broken since Leopard 10.5??

I have a Mac Pro and according to xlr8yourmac.com and the newertech website, there are four sata ports for your hard drives PLUS an additional two more sata ports directly on the motherboard. Through a complicated and difficult disassembly, it is possible to dissect your mac pro and install their cable which they sell for about $30, and get at the rear of your mac pro housing connectors for these two internal sata ports. In short, it's nothing more than an extension cable that fits into a neat housing at the back of the mac pro. You can then plug up to two esata drives into those jacks and they are basically hooked into the macpro motherboard. I ordered this cable and it worked splendidly since 10.4.8 and for 10.4.9 without any issue (that I could tell). I was even able to raid them together etc etc. (edit to be clear I mean I had two Lacie 500Gb drives with esata, firewire 800, 400 and USB 2 on them).
When I installed 10.5 it was all broken!! What a disaster. I can't use these drives on the firewire bus (which by the way they work fine on) because I am already tieing up that with other devices and drives. I need these extra two buses, plus they were **** fast before- I guess it's the same bus as the internal drives get.
I have contacted Lacie - no luck - and also newertech, and did so again today, but so far no luck, and apple, no luck and even submitted a feedback request back when we were on 10.5.1 (just released at that time), and no luck. I hoped 10.5.2 would restore this functionality.
I was told Apple do not normally go out of their way to kill unintended functionality but could this be the case on this occasion?

www.xlr8yourmac.com its over my head but...
A Copy of the April 23rd, 2007 news page post is below (in reply to eSATA Extender cables (w/PCI slot bracket) from Newer Tech for use with the 2 unused ports on the Mac Pro motherboard.)
" this may be of some interest for your readers.
From the Intel 631xESB/632xESB I/O Controller Hub data sheet:
    "Hot-Plug Operation
Dynamic Hot-Plug (for example, surprise removal) is not supported by the SATA host controller. However, using the PCS register configuration bits and power management flows, a device can be powered down by software, and the port can then be powered off, allowing removal and insertion of a new device. "
(I asked if he knew of any way to do that in OS X.)
the SATA controller does support AHCI mode, which enables hot plugging (same as with the raid southbridges ICH6R - ICH8R which support hot plugging with raid drivers from Intel without Intel assuring this).
But it does not support AHCI if the PATA port is used as in the Mac Pro. And without AHCI there is no way to do hot plugging.
Using a SATA DVD drive may not mean AHCI is used automatically. The controller has to be switched from IDE to AHCI mode. Maybe the Mac Pro does it on startup or some EFI specialist can finds out how to do that.
BTW Tiger can handle an ICH8R in AHCI mode on all SATA ports without a problem.
    Kind regards,
    Martin S. "
Info/Tips on using Spare SATA Ports with Windows: (from Jan 15th, 2008 news page) This may have come up in the past and I'd forgotten it (don't own a Mac Pro yet) but in reply to a post yesterday (1/15/2008) on the Pioneer SATA Blu-Ray reader/Superdrive combo drive, a reader mentioned the spare SATA ports are not usable in Windows XP at least with the standard drivers with Bootcamp. (Most readers have used the ports in OS X although I've not searched drive db reports for anyone that mentioned using Bootcamp/Windows also. BTW - The spare ports are bootable for OS X use, as noted in this article - although drives are not shown/usable when booted from Windows with standard drivers.)
(Update) Here's a reader mail w/tips on using the spare ports with Windows via a replacement chipset driver install and grub bootloader edit:
" after finding this thread in the onmac forums I finally was able to get my pioneer sata drive to work under bootcamp. Basically you have to do the following:
    - Install Win XP and ubuntu linux with a pata dvd drive in XP, change the ide 2680 driver to the intel ahci driver found here (downloadcenter.intel.com) S5000 Based Server AHCI SATA Storage Driver for Windows.
    - Boot into ubuntu and change the stage1 file of the grub bootloader to this:
    http://www.olofsson.info/grub/stage1
This keeps the mac pro in ahci mode when booting a foreign OS
Now you can boot windows using the linux partition, this will start grub and keep the mac pro in the correct mode
I also installed Refit to make things a little easier but as far as i know using Alt key when booting should work too.
if anyone tries this and has any questions feel free to ask
    -Forrest"

  • Multiple graphics cards on 2008 mac pro, won't work

Hi, I have a 2008 Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon with 14 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM. I have used a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Graphics card connected to 2 x BenQ E2400HD screens. Now, I want 4 screens so I bought a NVidia Geforce 8800 GT graphics card as I found these to be compatible with my setup on Ebay (only place I could find it). Got it in a brand new condition in a Apple graphics card box so should be all good. Put it in PCI-E slot 2. Now when I started my Mac after installing I could hear a loud fan noise (fan going on max speed) and tracked it to the new graphics card. When I open the system profiler it shows up as a display. The screen connected to the graphics card with a DVDI-cable does not show an image and the screen indicates that it does not have an input. Any ideas what's wrong here? Is my graphics card broken?

More than likely you got wrong verion.
1,1 and 2,1 Mac Pros are EFI32, and for Nvidia cards need proper version.
If your machine is a 3,1 or later you need an EFI64 version.
    Contact the seller and clarify.
If you install "ATY_Init" and are running 10.6.8 you will find the card will work once machine boots all the way.
You could then flash the card into proper version if you were especially clever with things like that.
But your seller should help you.
You need to know "Model Identifier"

  • My Mac Pro display setup for photography

I am a photographer and a recent refugee from Windows. I’m using my new Mac Pro to manage and process about 100K images and other digital assets. I’m especially pleased with my system’s display configuration. Here is what I’ve got:
I’m driving my displays with the NVIDIA GT 120. My main image viewing display is a 21” Eizo Color Edge LCD (CE210W). It has a wide color gamut and is more than adequate for my needs. I wanted a second display but was leery of the Apple Cinema units – a lot of comments on this forum and other places seemed to indicate a lack of quality control. Nevertheless, I got the 24” Apple Cinema Display and it is working perfectly.
I calibrated both units with the i1 Display 2 monitor calibration hardware. I ran the i1 Match software for calibrating the Apple display and the Eizo-supplied software for calibrating the Eizo (it stores calibration settings in the monitor’s hardware).
Opinions about monitor calibration settings are like belly buttons – everybody has one. Here are mine:
    white point – 6500 K; gamma – 2.2; luminance – 120 CD sq. m.
With both monitors calibrated using these settings, my standard reference image looks practically identical on both units. That is reassuring.
I do not doubt that some people are having problems with the Apple Cinema display. But mine is working perfectly… so far. It is an essential component of a very nice system.
BTW, if you want to hook a 24” Cinema Display to a Mac Pro then you will probably need a display cable extension (Apple picked a curious way to cut costs). I got my cable extension at MonoPrice.com for $6.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. Back up all data before you go.

  • Is it possible to install a HD4870x2 (2GB) in a Mac Pro 2009 8-Core 2.66GHz

    Hi All,
Im very new to Mac, in fact this is my first machine (I'm a total Noob). I managed to purchase a Mac Pro 4.1 2009 8-Core running Mavericks
To be honest I would like to spec it up on a budget, i was looking at a PowerColour HD4870 x 2 on ebay (221425916818), but apparently PC are supported on version Mac Pro Version 3.0 and above (is this true?)
I have a couple of concerns with it.
    1. Is it supported on the Mac Platform?
    2. the card had 1x6 pin and 1x8 pin PCI-e Power Cables, I've seen the cables on ebay (6-6 and 6-8) , will they be OK to power the card?
    3. Are there any sideffects or will devalue the machine using a PC card?
Any help or advice would be appreciated..
Currently it has the standard GT120 512MB
Compared to GTX460 1GB it performs pretty well.

    Regards, Abdul

    Thanks for the reply,
The honest truth of the matter is I bought this Mac with two things in mind, firstly too experiment with Ram configurations and secondly to see if there is market on selling them on after respecing the machines.
I run an ebay store in the UK, got the Mac Pro upgrades you could ask.
    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Home-Inspirations-Leicester
Its definately helped me in terms of the memory, I found out that each CPU is capable of handing 10 Ranks/Loads, this would allow you to install Quad Ranked dimms in slots (1+2)+(5+6) and dual ranked dimms in slots (3+4)+(6+7). When you install more then 10 ranks of memory per CPU the ram speed drops to 800Mhz instaed of running at the standard 1066Mhz
I had this issue with a customer when I sent out 8 Quad ranked dimms, he complained the system was running at 800Mhz, When I checked the forums no-one had a definanitive answer, now I have bought the machine I kinda figured it out by trial an error.
To be honest, I think I will just for the firware update to the 5.1, install a stock apple HD5770, add 2 x X5650 cpus, turning into a 12 core machine, maybe add 96GB of ram to it, and then add that 500GB SSD as boot drive.
Its important to know what my customers have, and what is possible (in terms of ram upgrades) on these machines.

  • New imac vs mac pro

Apologies if this is going over old ground.
I'm finally ready to upgrade/replace for Power Mac G5. It's been a loyal and reliable servant (apart from a blown graphics card this year) for 7 years, but it's time to retire.
I mainly use FCP & DVDSP with HD footage and increasingly Motion to produce short promos and corporate videos.
Although, my G5 does the job - it's now very slow rendering HD footage and Motion is almost a non-starter. Running concurrent applications is a painful and nosy experience.
So to new investment. With the obvious upgrading limitations of an imac, how long will it last before needing another upgrade? I'd be happy with 4 years
Or is the added expandability of a Mac Pro worth the extra cash?
I dare say either will blow me away at first.

    ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    One 18x SuperDrive
    £2041 incl vat
(Obviously also need a good monitor)
Ae there benchmark tests available to compare these two machines?
What say others in a similar position? Which would you go for?

New iMac has Thunderbolt, so you'll be able to edit from super fast Thuderbolt drives then they start shipping in about 3 more months.  For now you're stuck with FW800 drives which really aren't ideal for HD work.  But don't expect Thunderbolt drives to be cheap, not nearly as cheap as internal SATA drives for a tower.
Mac Pro allows you to install better, more powerful grahics cards that will let Motion, Color (and soon FCP X) run better, and you can get more CPU cores (which will impact FCP X, and the next version of FCStudio in beta testing).  You'll also be able to add much less expesive internal drives (2TB for not much), which will be fast enough for working with FCS apps.
Either way, you want the most number of CPU cores, fastest CPUs, 8GB RAM, and two 7200rpm drives.  You need a second drive as your scratch drive for sure.  Best graphics card you can afford.
While I was at NAB, a few companies said they were looking into developing a Thuderbolt PCI card for the current Mac Pro towers.  But I'm sure those will be some time before we see them.
Hint, don't get RAM and drives from Apple, go to OtherWorldComputing (.com) and get them much cheaper.  Super easy to install, and they'll give you clear directions for doing so.  Top notch customer support, also.
