NO more Shift + X in FCP 5?

Just installed it and am editing away. I love Shift+ X but it's not working. Did they get rid of it?
Shift + V works...

Shift-X is "Ripple Cut" ... it works for me
have you customized your keyboard? Option-H will bring up the keyboard layout window... click in the search bar and press Shift-X and see what you get

    Hi -
Turn off "snapping" by typing the letter "n".
Or go to the menu View and toggle Snapping.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't open FCP 10.0.3 files on laptop with Mavericks 10.9.2

Hi, has anyone come across the following problem? I have been working on an event in a film class using 10.0.3. That computer runs on Lion Os I think. I have copied those files onto my Macbook Air, which I recently updated to Mavericks 10.9.2. I then tried to open copied files on that laptop using FCP 10.0.3 and I am told "file cannot be opened". Why? Is this because of my OS? If I were to upgrade to a more recent version of FCP will that solve the problem? Although I then can't continue to work on those files in class for obvious reasons.

You don't open projects in FCP X.
    Depending on your versions:
-for 10.0.x, the projects and events need to be in the appropriate folders, and FCP X will see them.
-for 10.1.x, things are very different; you use Libraries, which can be opened and closed, copied or moved as needed. Libraries contain events, and projects, as well as clips, always exist inside events.
There are very good reasons to update to 10.1.1, especially two: it is WAY better, and old versions do not work well in Mavericks.
BUT you need to understand the new library model - and, from your post, I gather, even the old model too.
Before you do anything, you may be well served to follow some online tutorials.
About upgrading, the free videos from Ripple Training are excellent: http://www.rippletraining.com/fcpx-features.html
About FCP X in general, a great tutorial (using 10.1) is from Izzy Video: http://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial/

  • Picts vs Tiffs for FCP 5?

I'm doing a project where I'm using graphic overlays that super over my video. Based on a suggestion from one of the FCP threads, I followed the directions from a site <http://fcpbook.com/Photoshop1.html> that suggested using PICTs. I am very familiar with using PICT files as I've used them with our Avid Media Composer. Then again, I was under the impression Tiff files may be a more successful option with FCP.
So I moved forward with making the PICT files (with alpha channels) as the site instructed and when I imported them into FCP, I began to get crashes. Since the system was rock solid before I started importing and using PICT files, I can only surmise this was the culprit. So the question is: is it true FCP prefers working with Tiffs over PICTs? Especially when they are alpha channel (32 bits/pixel)?
    Thanks so much!
PowerMac G5 (Machine Model 7,3 CPU Type: 2.2) FCP 5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   XServe RAID (714 capacity, 600 gigs avail), 1 Gig RAM

Are the files by any chance CMYK? If so, that's the problem. Resave in photoshop as RGB.
Also, there's no point in keeping the dpi (within photoshop) as anything besides 72dpi. there are also limitations in the pixel dimensions allowed. I think the maximum is 4,000 x 4,000 but I'm not sure.
If you're working in photoshop, you may be better off using psd (photoshop files). They will maintain their transparency. Although each psd will import as a layered sequence rather an individual clip, it's easy enough to simply drag all the layers to the browser to create individual clips. The only trick with this is to render (or rasterize) any effects in photoshop before saving.

  • Cannot open projects in FCP - "General Error"

Well, just upgraded to OS 10.4.10, and FCP to 5.1 on my 867 quicksilver. several external lacie hard drives. 1.5 GB ram. after the archive and install of the OS, I could not open projects in FCP 4.5 due "General Error". I upgraded to FCP 5.1 and experience same issue.
at the time of OS upgrade, i also changed my second internal drive for a larger one, and put the original one, with its original name, in an external firewire housing. It appears on my desktop and is included in the FCP system preferences, so i assume that is not a problem.
    any ideas?

I updates to 5.1.4, and issue turned into "project file unreadable or from more recent version of FCP" when file is actually from older version. THIS problem was solved by disconnecting all external drives, opening 4.5 project and updating to 5.1.4, reconnecting and setting external drives in FCP system pref, and then reconnecting media.
I have had this problem also happen with a project i already successfully opened in 5.1.4 ...turns out i had opened it with some network drives on my desktop and then removed them. I put one back, it opened successfully, I got rid of the network drive and resaved and now it opens fine. In other words the message "project unreadable or from a later version of Final Cut" really indicates there is some drive rooting problem, not a problem with project file or what generation it is.
hope that helps anyone out there. sure is a relief to be working again.

  • I´m editing a video with photos, suddenly FCP X displays the spinning ball a few seconds every time I play the Timeline

I´m in a project that is primarily composed of photos, lots of them. When I reached 10 minutes of work the spinning ball started to appear after an edit and when I try to play the timeline to see the results or preview my edit. I checked the source material and I realized that I made a begginner mistake: I had a lot of photos with too high resolution (4000x3000 for example), so I resized all photos to a more manageable size for FCP, 1024x768, and then I saw the light! FCP began to work normally again. Later I added more photos to the events folders, and when I finished the import, FCP returned to the same thing I described before. Someone has a Tip? I am working with too many photos? the video is planned to last 20 minutes, maybe I will assemble it with 400 photos, but in the events I have lots of photos, 2600 aprox, some of it referenced and others copied in the events folders. Maybe I have a lot of photos in the events folders?

I´ve have done that but does not work. I have 12 GB of RAM in a Core i3 3.2 Ghz iMac, thanks

  • All OS X is really buggy - mouse lag, bluetooth dropouts, FCP X beachballs - iOS issues with iTunes = CRAP

I have had so many issues of late with both OS X Mavericks and iOS 8, that I am looking to change.  Bluetooth dropouts that infuriate me despite swapping to brand new batteries, cleaning terminals, adding alfoil to hold the batteries more snuggly, etc; to FCP X constantly beach-balling (and I have 32GB RAM running with OS X running from an SSD); to itunes refusing to play any of my content on my new iPhone 6+.  I have erased the phone twice and reloaded content after setting it up as a "new phone".
Is this April, and I have missed something?
Come on Apple, you have become an absolute JOKE.  iCloud not working, iOS 8 not working, Bluetooth dropouts, I can't verify my new iPhone with iCloud Keychain for some unknown reason (wants me to reset and retry all the time).
If I wanted this cr@p, I would have stayed with W7....
Anyone else having issues with the new OSs?

  • SYNC  Loss when converting FCP 6.1 Video thru compressor for DVDSP 4

This is an intermittent problem; video is perfect when viewing in FCP or on tape; but there is an intermittent loss when the MPEG-2 ecode is done... any suggestions to correct?
    KGD

So we take it that it's a bug which strenghens the
usual warning: never update your software in the
middle of a big project. Acually the more I look at
FCP 6, the more I wonder if it's worth upgrading...
I have another six months to go on this project, and I love smoothcam, but still....
I'm going to try 6.0.1. If I don't get any satisfaction with that, I am going to go back to 5.1.4, which was working fine. Actually, FCP 6 solved what for me was a huge problem with version 5.1, which involved management of media and clips. Previous to version 6, if I moved a sequence from one nested bin to another one nested in a different bin, FCP silently and without any warning broke ALL links to the master clips in that sequence. FCP 6 has fixed this problem. But created others.....
I will report back to this thread after I try 6.0.1.

  • ----- GENERAL ERROR when opening PROJECT on different FCP ?? -----

Any reason why I'm getting 'general error (41)' when trying to open a client's rough cut of a project?
    I'm running fcp 5.0 on a dual G5....
Had no trouble importing digitized source material and animations from their G-RAID drive, but when I tried to open their project and review a rough cut, I get the error message.
Is it that they have a more current version of fcp?
    Anyone?
    Thanks,
    Mark

You need to be running the same or later version of FCP that your client's are running... that is the problem. You can get to 5.0.4 for free simply by running software update and downloading it. It's better software than what you're running now in any event.
If they are running FCP 5.1 or later you need to "crossgrade" to the current version of FCP. It's a bargain actually....
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
It's 2 years ahead of what you're running now... new features, and bug fixes all over the place.

  • Unreal Render Time in FCP

Can anyone offer a clue as to why my G-5 has decided it needs 23 hours or more to render my FCP projects lately? It wasn't doing that on longer projects just a week ago. I tried Disk Repair and that did nothing.
Thanks in advance on any advice you can give.
    LindaBorek

What is happening to you is that your disk is getting full and part of that long time noted is the OS looking for little pieces of real estate to put the files it is creating. The system disk is also being used by the OS, which is constantly reading from and writing to it.
Your biggest risk here is freezing up your system to such an extent that you'll even have a hard time booting the machine. Run, don't walk to the nearest drive seller and get a second internal. Install, format and move your capture scratch and render folders to it.
If you can open a can of peas, you can install a second drive. Just be sure to spend the extra 10 bucks and get a wrist strap grounding thingie-- it connects you to the machine and prevents any static from frying the machine. If the store is friendly, they may even give you a disposable one.
Somewhere on the apple site are directions for installing-- just search the support page.
Barring an immediate internal, get a firewire 800 and do as above.
An immediate thing you could try is to open the render manager and trash EVERY render file on your drive, then re-render your sequence. You can build up quite a stash of render files associated with old projects, old sequences etc-- these are as big as the files you started with, so they add up fast.

  • FCP 5.1 Poor Performance

To make a long story short, I recently wiped out my machine and did a clean install of everything including the new Universal Verison of FC Studio. Before this I had FCPHD, including all software updates.
The new one doesn't seem to be performing as well. Has anyone else noticed this? It seems everytime I move a clip on teh timeline I have to wait for it to "perpare video for disply," and it seems as if RT isn't as effective as it was with the old version. I seem to be doing a lot more waiting on it to process little chages before I can continue to work. The old version was a million bucks, itr worked like a dream. Infact, I noticed last night at a certain point when I just dropped a clip with no effects or anything on it into the timeline, the red "needs renedering" bar was at the top right away and was there for a few second before turning to green, and meanwhile it can't process things as quickly.
The only differences in my new setup that I can thnk of are:
    FCP 5.1 from FCPHD
    Updates to OS
Working off of Startup Volume (which is empty except for OS and apps - plenty of room), VS used to work off of seperate volume.
Latest version of CHUD now which doesn't support NAP
Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Well, the size of the App alone has more than doubled since FCP 4.5 (and that's 5.0.4 - non-universal binary)...
There's a lot of new stuff to support HDV and other good things, and the OS takes up more space these days as well. If you wanna, keep 4.5 around - I have it and use it on occasion - mostly when I need to edit a client project that must stay in 4.5...

  • FCP refuses to Boot

I have tried repairing permissions and the terminal mode suggestion: sudo update_prebinding -root / -force -debug with restart
also reinstalling the software from scratch, but FCP 5.0 still refuses to boot.
(I had just shifted a legacy FCP Documents folder to the second drive and restarted FCP when the problem appeared)
    Please help.
    PowerMac G5 1.8 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   3Gb RAM + 2 HD

"Legacy folder" What's in that legacy folder?
FCP Documents contains Capture scratch, Render Autosave and Cache files. After shifting the legacy version from the boot drive to the Media Drive I deleted the original from my boot drive. The media drive then had two FCP docs folders with different names. Is this a problem?
Is that second drive formatted properly?
Yes. There were no problems downloading or uploading earlier. I sought advice about splitting FCP folders between two disks on this forum a few days back (16-Sep-2006 21:41) as I was concerned about possible problems. This aspect of setting up a second drive is not well covered in the manuals.
How far along in the start up process do you get?
I get the FCP Application page, then the menu, then a spinning wheel, then caput.
    Any error messages?
    No
Does this happen when you try to open a project or
    the application?
    Both
What version of FCP are you running?
I had 5.0.4 but after reinstalling from disk it is 5.0

  • FCP 4 xml export

I tried to get help on a blog but my last question wasn't answered.
    This is the thread:
I’m trying to export an XML file from FCP 4 to Premiere CS5. After I name the file and save it to my external hard drive, I am only able to get about 50% of the way through the export process before FCP quits and asks if I want to send a report.
I read on a blog that the file can be exported, but only with Apple XML Interchange Format version 4 (or better); my only option is Version 1.
How can I export this file, since it fails to work with version 1?
    Reply:
XML was in infancy when FCP4 was released so it is not surprising that it isn't working. Plus you will need to see if you can open it in a more recent version of FCP before re-exporting in the correct XML format.
EDL is probably the only way you will be able to move this project. What is the codec of your media? Or are you planning on recapture in CS5?
I wanted to open the timeline in Premiere to do more editing.
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC at Most Quality
    Frame Rate: 29.97

Best bet is to get the old FCP project to open in Final Cut 7 and then it should open directly into CS5.5. There is no surety that a FCP4 project can be opened by FCP7 however. Apple are terrible at backwards and forwards compatibility.
What you are trying to do can only be done via EDl as far as I know and then relink media if it is in a format that CS5 can read.
So do I have to purchase FCP 7 in order to import the timeline into Premiere?
My last question wasn't answered. So do I have to have FCP 7 in order to get my timeline into Premiere?

Or find someone who has it and will do it for you. Yes, you need v6 or 7.
This is the Final Cut Pro X forum BTW.

  • FCP 6 Freezing

    My setup is MacPro 2.66GHz/1GB/Decklink Extreem/Sonnet 2.4T SATA/Apple 20-inch display x2/
    Problem start after upgrade 4GB RAM(Crucial 4x1GB).
Problem is always freezing the FCP, then i removed the upgraded RAM no problem comming.
After that I have checked with 2GB (2x1GB Crucial) RAM no problem found.
I can't upgrade more than 2GB RAM FCP getting stuck.
    Pls Help.

It sounds like you have a bad stick or two of RAM. I'd recommend contacting Crucial for replacement(s).

  • Preview Work Before Rendering. FCP 5

    Hi
I just wanted to know how to preview my work before spending a rather lot of time rendering.
    Thanks

Quickview has some user settings. I'm not at my FCP machine at the moment so can't tell you where or what they are, sorry. Quickview is one of the more underused tools in FCP.
My post should have been more clear; these are three additional ways to preview renders.
    A. You can use the QuickView feature from the toolbox.
    B. On the timeline, you can set in and out points around just a portion of your render.
    C. On the timeline, you can start any render and stop it at any point. You can then play the part that has rendered.
