No more special folder icon after moved My Documents to network

Hi,
I am on W7 Pro SP1 64bit in workgroup mode. Recently I moved (or folder redirection) the Documents (aka My Documents), My Pictures and few others user folders (those user folders in \Users\<User_Name>\<folder_name>) to a network share hosted
by a non-Windows NAS. At the same time, Offline Files ("Always Available Offline") feature was turned on for those folders. Everything works fine but I no longer get the unique folder icon for each of these said folders. These folders used to be like this...
but now they become like this...
i went to Properties but "Choose Folder Icon" button is not available...
when i unhide hidden and system protected files, i could see the desktop.ini is there.
anyone know how can i restore the folder icons?
any help is highly appreciated! TQVM in advance!
TQ! Jacko

Hi,
As you can see, these icons indicate that these folders are offline files, based on my research, this is by design so as to we can know what files are offline files.
Have a nice day.

  • Flashing folder icon after Mac mini has been sitting for a few hours

I leave my Mac mini running at time when I leave the office to let it install an update or just cause I forget to close it all down. When I come in the next morning, I have a flashing folder icon waiting for me.
Every single post on the forums talk about this issue at startup. This isn't the case for me; It didn't get shut down. A simple reboot solves it but still an annoying occurrence.

  • IMac Bondi Blue flashes folder icon after OS X freeze

I have a problem with one of my iMacs. Just this morning, I used my iMac Bondi Blue with 256 megs of RAM, 20GB HD, and and with OS X Panther 10.3.9 installed. I was copying some files off of a thumbdrive, then all of a sudden, the mouse cursor turned into a "pinwheel" saying that it was busy, but I couldn't click, or open anything. The mouse could move, but it was not doing anything. I waited for about three minutes and turned it off buy unplugging it and plugging it back in. I turned it on, and all I got when I did was the folder icon with the Finder on it switching to a question mark. Any ideas?

Use your OS CD. Boot from it and see if the Disk Utility can find the hard drive.
What you describe is pretty typical of a hard drive failure. The read/write arm seizes up and the drive ist kaput, just like that!
If you can see the drive with the utility, you may need to reinstall the OS (Archive and Install).

  • Persistent Flashing Question Mark Folder Icon, after Repair & Rebuild-THX!

    Hello All,
Thank you in advance for any insights.
For the past week, one/two days after a force re-boot, my Quicksilver Mac (OSX 10.4.11 and OS 9 Classic) starts up with the dreaded flashing question mark folder.
The start up disk has always been on "Mac OS X, 10.4.11 on main stuff" ("main stuff" is the name of the hard drive.)
The first time, I ran DiskWarrior and rebuilt the hard drive, which is kind of new as it was replaced in April 2009. Then I ran OnyX and got a clean bill of health. The Mac was shut down at the end of the day as is my habit via turning off the power strip.
If it helps, here's part of the DiskWarrior report:
    • 13 files had a directory entry with an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired.
    • 340 files had a damaged extended attribute that was repaired.
    • 3 folders had a directory entry with an incorrect custom icon flag that was repaired.
    • Incorrect values in the Volume Information were repaired.
    Disk Information:
    Files: 370,719
    Folders: 85,161
    Free Space: 92.55 GB
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Block Size: 4 K
    Disk Sectors: 268,171,472
    Media: WDC WD5000AAKB-00H8A0
The next day, the flashing question mark folder reappeared. This time I used the original system installer CD (labeled Power Mac G4 OS X Install). Disk Utility made its repairs. And this time, the computer was put to sleep instead.
In the morning, it woke up, the wireless optical mouse worked for a few seconds, the hard drive is humming along then all of a sudden the arrow (mouse) froze and none of the keys on the keyboard functioned.
After some research, I deleted the energy saver preference (powermanager.list?) and ran Disk Utility again. And again, I shut down b/c I wasn't going to use the Mac for a day or two.
This afternoon, the pesky icon reappeared at start up. At first Disk Utility didn't see the hard drive then I restarted and the hard drive was selectable though not mounted. It was repaired and verified yet once again. Btw, when I did hard drive test, the message says something to the effect that it appears to be working properly.
My question is, might anyone know what's wrong? I've been backing up after every use and I have a laptop. But I love working on the desktop and if this issue can be fixed, that would be perfect.
As an aside, I've read that I should do a clean install. Would doing a clean install mean I need to re-install OS 9 as well as all other all other software programs-Adobe Creative Suite, Quickbooks, Verizon DSL, printer drivers etc.?
One final question, can I continue to boot up from the CD, repair then restart or will I damage the computer? Once it restart, everything seems to work normally and well.
Many, many thanks for reading and any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Sam

Disk damage can also affect the startup sequence, but I think what you have already done should have repaired any disk damage, or given you more information.
Once you have ruled out Disk damage, you get the flashing question mark when your Mac cannot find:
    • the preferred operating System
    • of the preferred version
    • on the preferred startup drive.
All these items are stored in the parameter RAM, backed up by a 3.6 volt, non-recharging 1/2-AA size battery that lasts three years or so, unless you turn off all power at night.
If you cannot remember when you last changed that battery, now is a good time. Be sure to reset the PMU/PRAM after installing the new battery.

  • Special folder icons

    Hi!
A cosmetic question: I've been playing around with some of my special folders (namely Pictures, Movies and Music) which I moved outside the Home folder replacing them with symbolic links. Now everything is still working fine, but Finder doesn't show their special icons anymore (just the plain folder ones).
Any hints on how to put back the original special icons? (I've tried creating new folders with the proper names inside my Home but they keep the plain icon).

Finder assigns custom icons to folders with the appropriate names inside the home folder of the current startup drive. You may have to at least restart the Finder if you have been changing things about to see the icons, or perhaps logout/in.
The icns files that are used for these and other items live here:
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources"
Control click on CoreTypes.bundle and select "Show Package Contents" to burrow down into the Resources folder. The icns files can be opened in Preview, make sure the focus is on the full size graphic and not the drawer, and you can copy the icon and paste it in the GetInfo box for whatever you want.

  • Wrong video icons after moving from camera roll to a album!

I take all the photos and videos from my camera roll and organize them into folders on my phone. After I take the videos out of the camera roll folder and put them in another folder the icon is totally different than the video. Is there a fix to this or has anyone else ran into this?

    Me too.
I unchecked the sync buttons so they were deleted from the phone, then re-checked them and added them back. All ok after that

  • No more App Store Icon after last update?

After I updated to IOS5, I got a few new Icons on my 4th Gen Ipod Touch.  However, there is no 'App Store' app anymore.  How do I access the App Store now?
I tried through Safari but it says it cannot open the page.
    Tks

Yes, I have it again - I had two updates on Monday and even though I have run them, the icon still shows a "2".

  • Best Practice after moving office and upgrading network

    Happy Friday all,
I wanted to know what the best practice is after some pretty dramatic changes on the network. We have just moved office, replaced switches, changed Internet service and got rid of lots of stuff we didn't need any more.
What is the best way forward to clean up the spiceworks inventory etc.
Is it possible to just delete everything and start again.
Short of a brand new installation (which I am leaning towards) are there any alternatives?
    Thanks in advance,
    Craig

  • Remove Folder icon on detailed navigation

Could anyone tell me how to more the folder icon from the detailed navigation so that I can have my detailed navigation look like it does on the left of this page?
I would also like to know how to get the "+" and "-" icons to display instead of bullets.
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Hi Patrick,
Download the par file named com.sap.portal.navigation.detailedtree.par from the pcd directory and import it in Netweaver developer studio. You will find two gif files in the /dist/images folder. Rename your image files as the files in that folder. Then copy your images to that folder. Then rebuild the par file and rename it to com.sap.portal.navigation.detailedtree.par and upload it to the server. Restart the server and your tree should have changed.

  • When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?

When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?
All of a sudden I noticed that most of the folders on my computer were no longer using the folder icon, but the generic document icon. I had to manually change back the icon being used by opening Get Info for each folder and copying and pasting the generic folder icon from some folders that remained unchanged. Now whenever I create a New Folder (right click -> "New Folder"), the icon that shows up is the generic document icon (white page with top right corner turned down). And I have to manually change it so it shows up as a folder in Finder or on my desktop. I don't know why or how this switch happened. All of the folders now on my computer look ok, but I need to change the default so when I create a New Folder it uses the correct icon.
I have also Forced Relaunch of my Finder and rebooted the system. I downloaded Candybar but am not sure what will fix anything, so I haven't proceeded.
Anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.

    Anyone?

  • Can't restore iPod after seeing the "Exclamation point folder icon"

My iPod showed me the "Exclamation point folder icon" out of the blue... i tried resetting, restoring (upgraded to 7.1 in the process) but when i connect the ipod to my computer it still shows me the icon, then the Apple sign, then "Do not disconnect" (while charging) and then the ipod itself starts clicking...
any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! very furstrated over here...

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.
    2. Do a search on Google and some topics on this discussion forum about “Sad iPod”

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • After moving the library, itunes shows less songs than music folder in finder does

         hi all.
after moving my library manually, i have this situation:
    1220 songs in music folder;
    1091 songs in itunes.
all the songs in itunes are regularly matched with the original file in the finder.
now. how to find the 29 files which are not in itunes? i don't care why this happened !!
    thanks to all in advance

in my itunes media folder there are not audio files! they are stored in music folder of the macintosh hd, as you can see from these screenshots. do you have any suggestion?

  • IPod won't sync anymore after moving itunes folder

I just got a laptop and want to be able to transfer all my music from iTunes and iPod from the desktop to the new computer. I wasn't ready to do it completely but read that I needed to move the iTunes folder to a shared folder so that I could access it with my laptop via my network. I did not realize what the results would be however! When I docked my iPod to the desktop this morning, I noticed that my iPod was empty after it had updated. All 4000+ songs/podcasts gone! Ack! I noticed that iTunes seems to be ok, all the songs are there, except they all have an exclamation point next to them. Re-docking and trying to sync does not work. The music won't transfer. I put the folder back into the my documents folder but nothing changed. Even system restore didn't help. I am desperate. I am even willing to forget the idea of putting everything on the laptop if I can just get things to how they were. When I clicked on the exclamation point in iTunes it said the original file could not be found. I would hate to have to load each cd in again. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

First I'll explain whats happened. when you moved the folder to a shared folder, then tried to update the iPod it wiped it out because iTUnes had no songs in it. All music shared over a network will not update to iPod, the songs have to be on the PCs harddrive.
What you need to do first is place the folder on the "Old" PC back to its default location in the "My MUisc" folder. It gets confusing because theres 2 iTUnes folders, one is named "iTUnes" the other is inside this one named "iTunes Music". So the "iTUnes" folder needs to be in the "My Music FOlder and the "iTUnes Music" one needs to be in the "Itunes" folder.
Once you have placed it back open iTUnes and make sure all the ! marks beside the songs are gone. DON'T UPDATE YOUR IPOD!!!! Since its already blank, you can use the whole iPOd harddrive to transfer the songs over. Hold down the shift and Ctrl keys. While holding them down connect the iPod let iTUnes open, and when it list the ipod, let go of the keys. this will stop an auto update from happening.
Now rightclick ipod in iTUnes, hit options, select "Manual Update". Now your iPod will be set to transfer. go here and follow the directions for moving the whole iTUnes library and songs to your new laptop. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Once everything is transfered over you can rightclick the ipod and set it back to auto update or whatever you had it on and uncheck "Enable Disk Use"
I also see you have a toshiba laptop, iPOd has issues with some toshibas so this artical may also be of help if you have troble getting the laptop to see your iPod http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300836
