No more whine

i finally sent my first generation macbook pro into applecare to get the whine fixed.
the whine had always been there. it wasn't particularly loud but if i ever needed to work in silence it bugged the **** out of me. when i was running Tiger, I solved it by having Photobooth run in the background. But with Leopard the Photobooth fix wasn't working so I buckled and called Applecare.
It took 2 days and my Macbook Pro returned - no longer sounding like it's dying a painful death.
Anyone on the fence about sending their MBP into applecare to get de-whined, do so immediately. You'll thank yourself afterwords.

I had mine in repair a few times. The local Apple Service Partner exchanged the logic board, the display (2x) and it didn't solve anything. All he told me to do is to tell him if I find out a solution. nokidding
I've been contacting Apple a few times. All they told me was to bring it to my local Service Partner.
I wrote to Apple again today, because now I have another problem. My AC Adapter burnt and I can't work. I am in Kraków at the moment for a few months and the local dealer (iSpot - Apple IMC Poland) wanted to contact Apple and find a solution to help. I went there again yesterday to check for the third time, if they got an answer from Apple, but they still hadn't contacted Apple. I don't know why they wrote down my serial number, phone number and email adress, if they weren't to contact Apple in the first place.
I am so dissatisfied with Apple and the support I am getting. I bought AppleCare. Don't know what I paid money for.
I am glad you got the problem solved. Apple doesn't seem to care much about the european customers. My experience. I don't expect Apple to answer my mail today. The last two mails were never answered.
There are e few more stories (swollen battery, Mighty Mouse not working). I just hope to get my problems solved one day.

  • Apple Support - more whine information

My 2.16 MBP has the whine. The mirror widget fix has kept me sane so far, but I'm just not happy that this problem persists so I called Apple Care.
They acknowledged the whine issue, but they were quite contradictory because on one hand they said the whine was 'normal' then on the other they said Apple were currently working on a fix. This is just crazy talk. It's either a problem, or is isn't! It's clear to me that it's a problem.
Anyway, they asked me which side of the laptop the noise was eminating from. They said if it came from under the F10-F12 keys, then it was a real problem and I should send it back. However, if the noise came from the left-hand side of the machine, then this was normal! They wouldn't/couldn't explain what the difference was. Can anyone on here explain the difference?
Unfortunatley, the noise is coming from the left-hand side of my machine so they won't accept it as a problem. I don't have the screen noise issue, but occasionally the screen brightness does dim before going back to normal. Is this another problem I should be concerned about? It's most certainly annoying!
Also, my MBP also gets hot but I'm not sure how to measure the exact temperature. Is there an application I can launch which tells me this?
Answers to any of these questions and any other thoughts appreciated.
    Cheers!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks for that.
Given that the whine is associated with the left-hand side, it seems Apple isn't acknowledging it as a problem. Not good.
Is the left-hand side where the CPU is by any chance? I think I will try calling Apple Care again and will do so until they take it back or refund my money. Wish me luck

  • I think i fixed the whine

for some reason my MBP *running off battery* doesnt seem to whine when my tv is on and im aboue 4 -5 feet away
i turned off the volume on my tv and its still gone for some reason...
im still tryin to decide why

I've discovered what causes the whine (at least in my MBP 1.83 GHz)(and it was mentioned in one of the other whining, errr, whine-related forums). The whine stops when I deactivate the second core on my processor (install the CHUD tools from the first disc of your OS X discs to do this). If it really annoys you, do this when you're not doing anything processor intensive.
Personally, the whine doesn't bother me. The Dell I'm working on now has a similar whine and I just ignore it. I find it funny how people act like this whine is ruining their life. "Ever since I got my MBP and it whined, my wife left me, my kids left me, my dog left me, I can't drive, I can't sleep, I can't even eat!" I do understand the frustration of buying a $2000+ notebook and having this issue but still; I hear more whine from the forums than I do my computer! Hopefully the issue is resolved so the electronic whine from the billboards will die down. I mean no offense but still, come on!

  • KDE4 - good for use?

Hey, I have waited for KDE 4 to hit the reps since the beginning but now, because of all the whinning and fuss people are making, I wonder if I should wait or upgrade.
The thing is, of all the searches I made about kde4 on this forum I only found one issue: nvidia drivers have problems with KDE4.
Are these nvidia issues reason enough to wait? Are there more issues that might have missed my searches?
I appreciate all the input people who tried/are using KDE4.1 have to offer but please, no more whinning. I simply want honest and construtive opinions about if a nvidia user should upgrade and if there are more issues I might not be aware of.
    Thanks in advance.
PS - I read somewhere to use a livecd to try KDE4.1 for myself but the thing is I can't find any Arch livecd and I don't know how to make one. x_x

Probably it will depend on what you are using. In my case, and ignoring nuisances that show up in
several places (kopete, no gdmsetup, panel difficult to configure ...) I was stuck with several things, mainly:
No migration path from Kmail3 to Kmail4. I dont feel like reconfiguring all the filters and such stuff.
I have 2 monitors and didnt find a way to make kde to use both of them.
I dont have sound on KDE (other WMs dont have the problem). There are some (confusing) solutions
on the forum but they only worked partially for me.
Perhaps I didnt try hard enough, but afer 2 full days fighting I had to be productive again and gave up.
I suggest you copy your full system to a free partition (f.e. with cp -av / ...), add an entry in menu.lst
whith the right boot device and do your tests there.
Will try again later this year.

  • Added memory, getting noise.

Just added another 1Gb of RAM, for a total of 2Gb, and now I've noticed more "whine" or fan noise in the upper left. Didn't seem to be that loud before when I only had 1Gb.
Anyone else have this issue, when adding more RAM?

i've been watching the boards a lot over the last month and I can not recall anyone report the whine problem by ADDING ram. Maybe its just a coincidence. There have been a lot of other issues related to third-party, non apple, ram though. Apparently MacBook is very sensitive to Ram quality.
Does the sound go away if you remove the RAM?
    Good luck.

    Hi Team,
Kindly tell me, why does the BB passport is'nt responding sometimes while opening some apps and while making or attending calls. It just stucked 5 times in one month further more, whin I am trying to restart the phone it still not responding to the restart button. Can you tell me why does this happens and how can I find a solution for this problem.Expecting a responce soon.

I don't know why it's happening... but have you rebooted or restarted this Passport anytime recently?
Restart: Press and hold the upper edge power button about 20-30 seconds, ignore the 3-2-1 timer and hold until the screen goes black and you see the red LED.
    or
Reboot: On the side edge volume keys, press and hold down both of the Up and Down volume keys for about 20 seconds, ignoring the initial screenshot message... the screen will go black and reboot.

  • New firmware v1.1

Says it fixes bugs and adds support for additional Nike + iPod voice kits.
Most important bug fix for me: after updating, the buzz and whine stopped!

I just received my new iPod Nano, and it had the high-pitched whining noise in a big way. The frequency of the noise is way up there, around 15 kHz, the kind of noise that'll drive you nuts after a while if you can hear those frequencies. Just ask my dog!
Anyway, I'd purchased the 8GB Nano from MacConnection and already arranged to return it for a refund because of the noise coming from the Nano (NOT from the earbuds, but from the unit, itself).
However, I didn't return it immediately. Instead, I looked around and found this forum and the advice about the v 1.1 firmware update. I thought I'd give it a try.
I ran the updater through iTunes, and guess what? My iPod is cured! No more whine, and I'm rocking again. Nice work, Apple!

  • The Whiner is away, how do I get a good one?

After hours on the phone with techincal and sales support, they have agreed to refund me for my machine. I finally admitted that 2500 dollars was just too much to have to deal with the inconvenience of mirror widgets and battery draining programs.
They will be placing my money back in my card as soon as my package arrives in California. I will then walk down to my local Apple store (35 minutes away) and purchase a new Macbook. According to all you people out there who claim only a small minority of macbooks whine, I shouldn' get another whiner should I? My first 2 whined, we'll see about the 3rd.
It sounds like week 12's and 11's are pretty good machines. How would one go about getting a Macbook from these weeks or one that doesn't whine?

I am not sure what all the fuss is about the whine. I can't believe some people (many people) on this forum have excahnged their machines twice, even three times in hopes of some elusive "perfect machine".
I have the CPU whine, but it goes away when I plug the machine in. If I am on battery, I just launch "Quiet MBP" and the machine is dead silent. I also have a sticky "H" key and the occasional kernal panic (this seems to be under control now).
I have not seriously thought of returning my MBP because it is a wonderful machine. I guess I am way less picky than I thought--of course I have had to work through a lot of network/computer problems in the past, so maybe I am just more tolerant. But seriously, you could go through 10 of these machines and not get the one you want. There is no such thing as perfect when you think of the extrordinarily complex tasks this (and all computers in genreral) are undertaking on a second to second basis.
P.S. I also have the tilted eject key--who cares!

  • Infamous WHINE & lack of Processor Performance settings?

I have owned all of the Al books from the 1ghz 17" to the 1.67 17". I noticed the whine first on the 15" 1.25 AlBook 2 yrs ago. During that time we were able to throttle the Processor settings ourselves via the Energy Saver setting in System Preferences. As of the release of the 1.67 AlBooks that option is no longer available. When the Processor Setting was set to Automatic, the AlBooks ALAWYS had the WHINE & HISS from under the keyboard in the same spot the MacBook Pro's demonstrate today.
I called Apple Tech support this afternoon and spoke to a tier 2 "guy". I asked about Speedstep / Processor throttling and that option being taken away from us - his reply was that the new processors control that now and are able to go from reduced settings to highest in a fraction of a second never noticed by the user. WRONG ANSWER. What he's telling me is the Processor is ALWAYS set to AUTOMATIC and we can't do anything about that. While his answer may be true, these units have the same whine & hiss as the previous AlBooks when set to Automatic. THIS IS A PROBLEM.
I do want that option BACK on my portable!!! It was nice knowing that if I was only wanting to watch a DVD on battery power that I could ensure low power consumption by going to the Energy Saver and setting the processor performance to "Reduced" or to always have it set to Highest if so desired. I have never been able to set the processor performance to Automatic and NOT hear the whine & hiss.
I have the 2.0ghz MacBook Pro w/ 2g RAM. I do not hear the whine whie the unit is plugged in - but on batter power it's very very loud. I could be wrong, but past experiences have proven that the automatic setting which WE ALL HAVE BY DEFAULT on our MacBook Pro's will produce this unwanted noise. This is an amazing laptop. But I am feeling a bit gimped having those settings taken away.

    MacBook Pro & Dual 2.7 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Since when does people saying something is so make it so? I'm curious; exactly how many people does it take to repeat some random statement before it automatically becomes fact?
And no, what I said was not meant as a flame. I just wanted to explain why it is hard to take the post seriously. Apparently you took what I said in the opposite way I'd intended. That being said, I did not mean it that way, so sorry for any offense.
Of course a support forum is going to be filled with posts about problems. What would you say is more likely to compel you to make a thread in a support forum, a problem (of any sort), or no real reason at all, just for kicks? Granted , when a product first comes out, there will be a few "I love my MBP!" type threads, but those go away after awhile. The complaints remain, because, let's face it, life is full of problems, and computers have more than their share as a whole.
The reason it's important that this is your first post is that is isn't very hard to imagine people registering to stir up controversy, goof around, or incite even more inflammatory responses (read: troll), when ANY new product is released. My post wasn't accusing you of any of this, merely trying to explain (beforehand) some responses you may get later on.
My only advice is that if you are unsatisfied with your machine, exchange it for a new one. If a noisy screen/processor/speaker is enough to make you reconsider your purchase entirely, then perhaps it would be wiser to wait until this particular issue has been ironed out on Apple's end (certainly not a terrible idea).
I do understand where you are coming from with the processor settings, by the way, and I do miss those settings at times, mostly because I'm a control freak. However, I am assuming that the MBP uses Intel's speed-step technology, and I don't know of a way to manipulate that, so it looks like that little feature is gone. It very well could be at the root of the noise issues, but at this point, that is only speculation.

  • I got my MBP back from AppleCare, LCD whine fixed!

Hello, I just got my computer back from AppleCare to get the screen whine repaired. It quiet as ever and I'm very happy. I've had no issues with CPU whine, ever.
    -Jacob

Congrads! It's always nice to hear something positive from Apple. They don't have time to do it right the first time but they have plenty of time to it over again. Either way, its stories such as yours that keeps me from canceling my MBP order which scheduled for 30 March shipment. If it takes longer I will be happy to wait. Reason: I'm praying for a serial number: W8610xxx or grater, meaning manufacturing date of: "86" = 2006 / "10>" meaning week ten or greater in the production cycle. I would be even happier if shows week "11" or "12" in the suffix since Apple has identified units with serial numbers of: W869xx… or below that are more susceptible of having a defective “inverter” w/noise that emits from the upper right corner of the keyboard. This valuable information comes from another Discussion Member who got lucky with an honest and knowledgeable tech support dude at Apple.

  • Work-around The Whine: why does this work? And is it BAD?

Hello everybody, sorry to bring up The Whine again, but I was wondering if anyone can figure out why the following trick works to eliminate the noise.
Also, could doing this regularly (all the time, basically) potentially be bad for the system in any way?
This is the work-around I've been using:
    1. Open Photobooth, then Force Quit that application (you must Force Quit rather than simply quit)
    2. Put the Macbook to sleep, waiting a few seconds until the indicator light starts pulsing.
    3. Wake up the computer.
Voila. That always does the trick, eliminating the whine until either the next time I boot up or the next time I open and quit Photobooth in the normal way.
I suppose force quitting may keep the processor slightly busy somehow?
    Don't know...

    John P.,
You say that all the notebooks that you know of make
some kind of noise. How many notebooks is that? Not
trying to be a jerk or anything but it better be like
dozens and dozens to make this claim. I have heard
the exact opposite of this claim from users that have
owned a few notebooks as well.
    Hi Jerome,
    No problem... I'll clarify..
5 notebooks personally, so when I say "all notebooks that I know of", it's a true claim because that is exactly what I'm saying.
If this noise is caused by capacitor that is at some
miniature threshold then why does the noise go away
when said remedies are employed? Does the capacitor
get bigger? Doesn't make sense but I appreiate that
you want to reassure original poster.
Actually I may have misspoken--it may be called a "voltage regulator" and it sits directly West of the CPU and controller chip. They do make noise and from what I have been told and remember, they can dampen it w/ a capacitor but that's about it. It's just the nature of the beast for that type of component, I'm told.
What "I" think it may be is the power fluctuations, or lack thereof, in the Intel chip causing it--when you put a load on it, there's a power fluctuation because your CPU usage is going up/down a little bit, but when you're not doing anything it's very little it causes it to make a little noise. No big deal, but just as long as it's not blaring in your ear when you're trying to use your computer. My ZV6000 does the same thing, but it doesn't matter when you've got a load or not--seems to do it more when I have Cool 'n' Quiet enabled.
This is not right. I am sorry.
If this noise is normal then I'll take no MacBook.
You know it is being fixed apparently on the MacBook
    Pros by motherboard replacement.
I never said anything about pro. I don't own one, nor have I used one. I can't say how profound in comparison to the Macbook (non pro) it is.
I'm sure if Apple thought it was a big enough problem, they would act either more quickly about it, but it's not stopping me from checking my e-mail or going on the Web.

  • H67MA-E35 (B3) emitting high-pitched whine/chirp

I am getting a high-pitched whine or chip coming from the bottom left area of the CPU/Heatsink. It isn't the fan, as I have stopped the fan and it still makes the noise. I was also able to correlate the vcore voltage with the noise. The noise is only present while the vcore is below 1.000v. After throttling over 1.000v it goes away. I am using a i5-2500k. I am not overclocked anything and made very few changes to the Bios (just boot order and things like that).
Is this a problem with the socket, northbridge, or some other part on the board? Or is this a problem with the power supply not supplying the right kind of voltage? Or is the computer throttling too low? Like how a car doesn't run properly if idling too low?
    Thanks in advance,

No, this is a very common issue with chokes since a choke is very similar to a buzzer or speaker coil so if it's a bit loose, it can vibrate and emit high-pitched sounds.  It will not damage anything by itself so if you can get it to stop using settings that are otherwise safe then there is no need to worry about it.
    - D
I believe this is more common with iron chokes.  The ferrite chokes used on this motherboard are far less likely to buzz.  I did look at the board photos and it looks like the CPU PSU is standard FET transistors.  Hmmmm.

  • Macbook pro c2d whine?

hi i recently got a new macbook pro c2d the 2.16 ghz version. anyway it ben about a week now and iv noticed a slight whine coming from one side of the machine (right side) and the other is normal. is this ok or should i take it to be serviced i also hear the left fan alot more than the right and it makes the most noise. i notice the whine when i put my ear up to the speaker and theres also a rattle that sometimes is there but this is only when i lift the machine up and position it certain ways. anyway my question is can the develop to become worse or is it ok the way it is. thanks for any help you can provide.
    Daniel

The processor whine is normal, a ticking sound might be a bad fan or something, but the whine is ok.

  • Windows Under Boot Camp & No Whine

    Hello,
My first post and first Mac. Not sure if this has been posted yet but apologies if it has. My Week 11 MBP has the Processor Whine which can be gotten rid of using the methods we all know about. When I am in Windows though there is no whine at all. So I have to assume that the problem can be fixed with a software update. Any thoughts?
    Bboy

Personally, I think the software fix is a band-aid for a larger hardware problem, probably involving the power management circuitry. I think the reason Photo Booth and QuietMBP and Windows XP all work to silence the noise is because they draw more power by using more CPU, and it's the extra power draw that kills the noise. Nothing scientific, mind you, just a hunch.
What if your speakers made an annoying hum that went away whenever you started playing music through them in iTunes? Would you still think it's a software problem? I think it's a similar situation here - where software can cover up the issue but not really fix it...

  • Is CPU "whine" a sign of bad things to come, or just annoying?

I bought a MacBook Pro for my wife in April. It's been good -- especially after the firmware update cranked up the fans and knocked down the temps a bit -- but it has the CPU whine/buzz/high-pitched noise under the keyboard. Like the MBPs of other folks, it goes away completely if you open Photo Booth etc.
My question is, is this just an annoyance or should we worry about shortened lifespan of the MBP or other problems? My wife is loathe to give up the machine if it's not necessary, despite the aggravating sound.
I asked Apple Care this question and the rep said it shouldn't be a problem -- as far as she knows. I didn't find that as definitive as I'd like. What do you guys think?

There are different power saving modes, they are labeled C0 (full power) through C4 (deep sleep). By disabling C4 the CPU only can enter C3 (sleep) and therefore consumes a little bit more power. I don't know if this increased power consumption is significant, but I guess you will barely notice it.
