No mouse, keyboard, USB after installing 10.9 on MacPro

This morning I installed os 10.9 on my early 08 mac pro. The update from 10.8 went smoothly until the system rebooted and the login box appeared.
I can't move the mouse or type anything.
I'm using a standard usb apple keyboard and mouse plugged into the back.  No, hubs or anything else.
USB devices don't seem to get power from any port, my iPhone wont charge and the LED on mouse is dark.
Luckily I had screen sharing turned on and could log-in from my laptop.
The system seems to run normally otherwise.
USB works fine if I boot back into OS 10.8
some other things I've tried:
resting the SMC and PRAM
booting with the shift key down
booting from the recovery partition - no mouse or keybord in the
This is in the system log when the mac pro boots:
USBF:  241. 35  The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
Any ideas?

Okay - I fixed it.  10.9 Dosn't like my old airport card.
I took it out and things run okay.
This is it

  • Unable to wake screen using magic mouse or trackpad after installing magic mouse

    Dear Everyone,
I am using mbp 15 inch early 2011 with 2 GHZ intel i7 processor and a  4gb ram. I would like to tell you that i have installed the mac os x lion and quite happy with the improvement. however, there are same changes which i am not sure whether it is that my mac that causeing theproblem or the bug from the lion itself. i am unable to wake my mbp screen using my magic mouse or trackpad after installing lion. i believe that my mbp has not really enter sleep mode as i dont see the sleep indicator at the bottom right corner flickering. i also believe that it is only the screen that goes to sleep while the hard disk is not. Normally a single swing  of the magic mouse or a single swipe of the trackpad will normally wake the screen. in order to wake the screen now is only to click on the magic mouse or trackpad. furthermore, scrolliing page using magic mouse also become unusual after installing the lion. does any of u happen to come across these problems as well? Is there any other way to downgrade to snow leopard back? (i ask this in case that this issue really cannot be fixed). Please help me on this issue. Thank you very much for taking your time to read and reply this thread.
    Moonbasher (henry)

First, Lion does not wake on mouse or trackpad movement, only clicks or keyboard presses.  This is presumably to avoid waking the computer from display or full sleep accidentally, and is just how Lion works.  It's going to take some getting used to, personally, but I've noticed my mac hasn't woken up on it's own.  Apparently moving about my apartment moves the mouse enough that Snow Leopard used to wake the iMac.  This is not a glitch, and unfortunately, a downgrade is a complicated matter, involving erasing the HD entirely, and restoring from a backup created in Snow Leopard and not used with Lion at all, or manually importing important bits of data, as libraries upgraded by new versions of Mail, iCal, etc will not be compatible with the old versions.
In terms of your mouse scrolling, describe it in a bit more detail; Lion introduces "natural" scrolling, where instead of the mouse wheel moving the "window" over the contents, it moves the contents through the window, like scrolling on an iPhone or iPad.  In other words, think of your finger on the mouse as pressing on the page you're looking at and dragging it upward through the field of view.  I remember long ago thinking my very first scrolling mouse was backwards, and then adjusting to "down is down, up is up".  If this is the behavior you're experiencing, this also is the way Lion works.  This, however, can be changed in the mouse or trackpad preference pane in system preferences.  Simply deselect "natural" scrolling.
In a more general sense, its usually not a good idea to do a major software upgrade on your primary machine unless you're willing to deal with some zero-day glitches.  It sounds like the issues you're having aren't actually glitches, and you should be happy for that, but in the future, you might want to wait a few weeks for other users with more experience with major OS launches to find those bugs and point them out to the community for Apple to fix.  In terms of an OS launch, I think this has been absolutely one of the best.  I'm seeing very few major glitches resulting in lost data, few things that would really destroy my personal workflows, and compatiblity issues with other products seems to be well documented or negligible.  It's also a bit hasty to assume that mere hours after launch Apple would have any ability to fix ACTUAL problems with the OS.  My recommendation would be to get used to the change; having to click the mouse at least means you'll never accidentally wake your machine bumping against your desk.

    Hi applecore_eater,
When Leopard came out, machines were shipping with Tiger for 3-5 months after it's release. So the fact that you bought a machine with Leopard still installed is not uncommon, especially considering we're not even a month into release. Matter of fact, I'd be surprised to see a lot of machines (unless CTO) that are coming with Snow Leopard.
The battery issue is not specific to Snow Leopard or the MacBook Air. I've deployed SL to about 15-20 MacBook Airs and all of them have been perfectly fine (batteries).

  • Please HELP!! MacBook stuck on "Select your Keyboard" screen after installing Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive!

Hello, I just recently replaced my internal hard drive in my MacBook [from a 250gb to a blank/empty 750gb]. I managed to get OS X Snow Leopard installed with the DVD. Setup seems to run fine at first, I get the screen in space with the welcome message different languages while music plays. Then I'm asked to select my country, then here is my problem- the next screen asks me to "Select Your Keyboard", I select & click "Continue" button, then my Mac is just showing the spinning beachball & it stayed that way all night =( I don't know how to fix this. Anyone experience this or have any solutions for me? I'd appreciate any help! Thank you! [I've been googling since yesterday with no luck on finding an answer].

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.
    That said, the two comments:

would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.

  • Trouble using my mouse in Outlook after installing AA9 Pro

I installed Acrobat 9 Pro on my 64 bit Wondows machine running Vista. Now when I open Microsoft Outlook 2003 I can type, read and send messages but for some reason when I am writing a message I can't use my mouse to insert the curser into text that is already written. I have to use the arrow keys to scroll through the message to fix spelling mistakes and such. I also find that when I work in Outlook and than open a Word document at the same time, my mouse doesn't work in Word 2003 either. Once I quit Outlook, Word will function properly. I also will get an error messaqe after quitting Outlook that asks me if I want to save changes to PDFMCustom. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing and get the same problem. Both programs are updated with the latest versions.
    Any ideas?

It's got nothing to do with disabling Acrobat 9, this is the bit that worked for me, it involves changing a 3 to a 2. Read below.

  • Keyboard FAILURE after install...thanks Apple.

Installed an "upgrade" Leopard on my 1.8ghz Core Duo Macbook Laptop and after install the laptop keyboard would no longer work. No matter what I did, rebooted, safe mode, single user mode, nothing... No keys would register. Keyboard shows up fine in SysInfo, just wont type...
If I boot to the Leopard DVD, the keyboard works fine.
Thanks Apple for releasing this POS and making Vista actually look like a stable OS.
This is the last time I get burned like this.... no more.

    Hello all...
Just an FYI. I had the same problem with my MacBook. I installed Leopard and the keyboard stopped working. It was because of SideTrack. I was able to hook up with a firewire to my computer to my roommate's Mac and reboot while holding "T". My computer appeared on his desktop and then I went in and removed the SideTrack files. Works fine now.
Sounds like they'll have a Leopard update soon,

  • MOVED: MSI Z77A-GD65: All mouse & keyboards (usb) are acting up

It is supported, Froggy just meant you'd possibly require an update. Since you have the latest now that's not the problem.
Have you tried mouse and Keyboard in other usb ports. Sure it is keyboard/mouse and not the system beeing generally laggy. Have you run a virus check?
    Ok, thanks for replying.
I've tried all ports, and changing to a different USB connectors on the motherboard.
I do have Security Essentials installed, and it's not an virus issue.
Also I just recalled that during the installation of Windows 7 Pro the keyboard and mouse was also stuttering a bit.
This was after I've cleaned the HDD and so did a full clean install.
I've tried using the MSI LiveUpdate tool to update all my drivers, but no luck there either.
As I mentioned, never had this problem before and after having this issue for 2 days now I notice that it almost looks like the keyboard and mouse are "reconnecting". Both mouse and keyboard light flashes for a second, and then it works but happends again randomly.
Just weird that the other devices aren't affected, like my 4G modem that I use for internet. No problems there.
... But when I'm in BIOS there is no problem whatsoever with the keyboard and mouse.

  • Jerky mouse, poor responses after installing OS 10.5.7

I installed OS 10.5.7 on my 20" iMac dual core Intel (3Gb RAM) about three weeks ago. Since then, I've noticed that the computer does many things poorly: Jerky mouse behavior, especially in Photoshop CS3 (but to a lesser extent in other programs), very slow to display the I/O directories when downloading an image from a reputable Web page (Stock.Xchng, MorgueFile, others), slow to open Applications Manager and other apps.
The worst offender is the Photoshop Jerky Mouse, which makes it almost impossible to do anything in PS. I have a hardwired MightyMouse, and it's brand new as of last week, but the same thing happened with the old mouse. This behavior seems to be the very worst after I've been downloading files from the Internet (almost always with Safari, but once in a while with Firefox). Sometimes, I purge the browser cache, and even dump the cookies, trying to figure out what might be lurking in the browser that affects PS.
Also, I have a second monitor, an Environ 19", which doesn't seem to produce any of it's own problems.
I have run the Disk Utilities a lot and turned off the iMac for long stretches (hours, overnight, and also 10 minutes here and there). Things seem to go fine when I start, but if I have any internet work, especially that involves downloading, I start to get the slow screen draws and the almost inevitable Photoshop Jerky Mouse behavior. (I've also tossed the PS Prefs.)
So: Is 10.5.7 dodgy? Is it a poor match for the Adobe Creative Suite 3 apps and for IDCS4 (a separate purchase from the full CS3 group)?
    Thank you.

I too am having similar problems. It occurs in the finder, in Illustrator, Photoshop, Safari, Mail, everywhere. Sometimes the mouse simply will not click, even after repeated tries. Trying to post this message I had to click several times on the link before it worked. Usually if I hold it down for several seconds it will register a click. It is particularly aggravating to click and drag on the desktop to select and move files only to have the selection be completely different than intended. This same issue in Illustrator is infuriating.
Yes, I have tried several different USB mice.
Yes, I have checked batteries (in the mice that need them).
Yes, I have updated to the latest software.
I do have a Wacom Intuos 2 Tablet and have had different issues with it. I have tried 6.1.1-2, 6.1.0-7 and 6.08-2. It doesn't matter which one I load, or if I remove them completely and reboot, the problems with my primary mouse remain. And, on top of that, the mouse for the Intuos 2 will just simply drop my left click after a random amount of time. In Illustrator I was trying to align a point to another and after getting it close it would simply drop the point. I tested this by looking at the light on the tablet, it turns green when clicked and orange when not. It was always green, not even a flicker of orange. I also tested this in the finder by resizing the bottom right of a window. While staring at the light on the tablet to be sure it was staying solid green, the finder just drops the click and stops resizing the window.
I remember back in the earlier Mac days and even Windows (what little experience I have with that) clicking a dozen or more times while the computer was too busy to process the request that the clicks all registered perfectly in space and were held in a cue until the processor could catch up. My point being that the clicks were precisely where you intended even though they had been cached and buffered. It seems that there is no longer any buffer cue for clicks. Precision has suffered.
I was experiencing similar effects under 10.5.7 but to a lesser degree. I just assumed that my mouse was going bad. But after upgrading to 10.5.8 and testing with several mice, it is clear that there is something wrong under the hood.

  • Problems with external/usb after installing new hard drive

After having a new hard drive installed (from Mac 10.5.2 to 10.6.8) I have experienced 2 problems so far:
    1. I am getting no response (from anything connected from my usb port) ie. mouse.  But plugging in the mouse directly into the mac works fine.
    2. After a few minutes, the sound from my production speakers (connected: macbook->usb cord->sound card-> production speakers) starts to skip and then no sound at all, however my soundcard is still working as I see the light is on.
Can anyone let me know how this can be fixed?  I never had these problems before getting the new hard drive.

    try doing a PRAM/NVRAM reset.......
that might sort out your issues.......
good luck.....hope it works for you...

  • Keyboard problems after installing Leopard

    Hi,
I have the new iMac 20'' obviously with the latest keyboard, after having installed Leopard, without upgrading, but installing the new OS deleting all old files, buttons from F1 to F19 are not the same as berfore.
Fiirst of all I can't control the volume any more, nor the iTunes "pause" "forward exc", nor brightness, nor dashboard...
Also F8 is used for Spaces, but F8 is for pause/play in iTunes.
Can anyone help me? It's so annoying!
    Ciao

Hmmm. You might want to check your Keyboard settings in System Preferences. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse and then check under the "Keyboard" tab. Under the "Keyboard" tab, check to see if the checkbox labeled "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is checked. If it is, you have to hit the fn key and the appropriate F key to get the brightness, volume, etc. functions to work. Just uncheck the box if you don't want to hit the fn key in order to do these things.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mouse is crazy after installing Mavericks on a 2007 iMac

After upgrading to OSX Mavericks on a 2007 iMac, the mouse went out of control. I´ve been using a logitech wireless mouse that got stuck. I´ve changed to original iMac mouse but can´t control the device, that keep clicking by itself, toggling between screens. I´ve already made a recovery installation of OS with no results. System preference options also are helpless. I don´t know what to do to regain control over the mouse and the computer. Any suggestions?

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be applicable.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor in response to user input, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • I am having awful problems with mouse and trackpad after installing Lion

I have tried 3 different brands of mice and it happens with each one. the mouse clicks and sticks spontaniously and wont let go and hitting esc or trying to click somewhere else doesn't have any effect - it wont let go. And it doesn't seem to matter which program. At forst i thought it was just pwer point but it still happens if I command/tab over to mail or finder. and then I get the stupid wheel of death. power point (or whatever program I'm in) locks up. and then I lose recent edits.
I have a Mac book pro. I have use and external keyboard and monitor when I'm at my office.
When the problem has happened I have tried using the trackpad - but it's like it's dead. No click effect. No help!
I AM REALLY TRYING TO NOT GET ANGRY - BUT I AM READY TO SCRAP LION!!!!!!!!!!!
    HELP!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip re MagicPrefs! Great app!
Is anyone having trouble with Mac losing the connection to Magic Mouse after the Mac goes to sleep? I am running Mac Mini late 2009 with dual-core 2.0 GHz and 4 GB RAM. Never had any issues under Snow Leopard, only after the upgrade to Lion. Battery is OK (tried fresh ones with no luck).
Turning the mouse off then on does not help, but ocasionally I have been able to get the mouse back by simply using Command+Tab. It does not seem to matter which app is active.
